I went looking for an Asian Market near the rental I was staying at in Phoenix and came across this little gem. It's in a little mall type building and is very unassuming. When I arrived at 9 AM (when they were opening) a man was sweeping the sidewalk. I noted that the place looked worn but clean. I was greeted by a nice elderly man at the counter. I believe his wife may have been handling the other counter. I found so many Vietnamese, Japanese and Thai foods that I normally eat and like. One item that I hardly used to see was the sticky rice wrapped around a banana and steamed in banana leaves. I found that at this little unassuming store. I took my time browsing through the aisles and was amazed at how many items I could eat that were gluten free and dairy free. Because a lot of Asian food uses shoyu, soy sauce, that contains gluten, I have had to restrict my diet of Asian food. But this store opened up a whole new world for me. I am so happy I found this place. Some of the Asian veggies are a bit pricey but it was definitely less expensive than the big Asian Markets like HMart. The mochi I bought was also less expensive than the big markets, made and shipped directly from Japan. I will definitely go back to this store when I run out of all the items I just bought there. It is handicapped accessible. The only problem is getting the door open without assistance. I am not handicapped but I saw how the elderly man at the counter maneuvered his wheelchair into the store. Gem of an Asian market in Phoenix. Their produce section is great. They do ring everything up by hand at checkout. My bill was higher than I expected and upon reviewing the receipt in my car, I realized I was overcharged $40 for an item. I went back in immediately and asked about it and got a giggle Oopsies and was handed $40 from the register. I'd like to hope it was a simple mistake but in the back of my mind I have a nagging feeling they were swindling me. It's kept me from returning. Biggest fear when moving here would be the lack of southeast asian food/ grocery access but I'm so glad this store exists! Has all of my pho ingredients, spiciest Thai chilis, cilantro and green onions for a great price and quality! Also I love that they have individual noodle packets for sale, now I can get one pack of Buldak without committing to one flavor!! The interior may be on the smaller side, but it's truly the quality and accessibility of their products that is so grand! read more

I was overwhelmed with the selection at this market. There was a ton of fresh produce that was priced fairly and better than most super markets. I went here as I was making a Cambodian dish that required some ingredients they don't have in regular supermarkets. After reading the reviews, i did look up each of the items I was looking for in Vietnamese and or pictures of, and had a list on my phone which definitely helped me find what I was looking for. I didn't really ask for any assistance but check out was quick and easy. Not the prettiest looking shop but can't complain when they had everything I needed and a ton more! I cannot believe I have lived this close, and have never been to this market. I was going to a Market further way not realizing this one was less than half a mile away. They were super friendly when I walked in. And the store is much much larger than you would think. I wanted to purchase, rice, paper, tapioca, and spices and whatever else I seen that looked good. They had everything I needed, and even some things I didn't know I needed but bought anyway. They have so many items. I really need to write down the names and research recipes. It's a whole New World a Flavor that I would like to learn how to cook. I definitely recommend this market and I'm happy they are so close. I will continue to go there. I was looking for certain things I needed so I was on a mission. I love browsing through the aisles, but they are a little tight. I did find the candy, noodles, and canned item. The smell of the meats or the seafood from the counter was very strong. The lighting when you get closer to the back of the store gets a little dark. I don't think I even got a murmur from anyone there. It could be a lack of English speaking skills, but people could still smile and not look so angry or bothered to ring up your sale! I will share their selection of spices and Indian products in what I thought was mainly Chinese was impressive. I also bought fresh fish and it was reasonably priced and amazing when cooked. If you're looking for a good Asian market, do yourself a favor...Make the drive to Mekong or anywhere else. You'll thank me afterwards. C's class is having a feast this Friday. Two of the items on the sign up - 1c chopped leeks. 1c chopped onion. Sweet. I call chop and dice like a mutha... Sign me up for both! I have onion on hand always but leeks on the other hand that's a negative. S_routs unfortunately, they only had organic ($$$) and the majority of the leeks were the green part.. Which you toss (unless you making soup). So I get the idea to see if there was an Asian market close by. And I find this place. Not close but not all the way in Mesa. Now I was thinking this market would be like Mekong, Ranch 99, or LeeLees. Clean, bright, etc. That's a big ol nope! This place is completely run down. Dark, dirty, and cramped. The produce section is a joke. Produce sitting on tables and in milk crates. And there wasn't a leek in sight. I walked over to look at the meat section and made a beeline for the door. I will say that the gentleman that greeted me was very friendly. So stars for that. It's like this market was an after thought. Here's a few abandoned stores in this really small strip mall. Let's knock down some walls and plop a market in here. I honestly left after maybe 5 minutes. Even if they had leeks, I would have been worried about contacting a foodborne illness. This is an Asian grocery store you'd find back in the '80s. Smallish, with dim lighting, with a bit of a... medicinal smell to it? Or cured/preserved food-like? Some sort of slight funk. But hey, I don't really mind, it's the type of place I grew up shopping at with my mom way back when. The selection is decent for the space they have, with kitchen items, frozen selections, canned goods and fresh produce. They did have some exotic looking fruit that I had never seen before which was very intriguing to me. They had a variety of goods from different locations; examples include various sauces from Southeast Asian countries, to an aisle along the wall for African foods like fufu flour and cassava. Prices varied. A bottle of premium oyster sauce was much more expensive than at the AZ International Market but prices for other goods were the same or maybe a tad cheaper. read more

Anyone who dines at the popular Pho Thanh, which is in the same shopping complex, knows that parking here can be tricky during busy times (noon and early evening). The store itself is much bigger than it seems from the outside, and there is quite a wide variety of Asian food and merchandise within, though selections tend to be more limited compared to Lee Lee or Ranch Super L. You'll find most of what you'll need here in terms of Asian produce, packaged/bottled/canned foods - not all, though. For instance, I can't find Tiparos, the very popular brand of fish sauce which is now found even in regular supermarkets, although this place does have other brands including a vegetarian (!!!) fish sauce. I also wish they'd put better lighting in the store and make the floors a bit, um, cleaner. read more

I must say the size of this store really surprised me. Kinda like Alice in Wonderland where you open one teeny tiny door and find a world you never knew existed. One Yelper said this store reminds them of Lee Lee's and I cannot say I don't agree. To add to that sentiment in many ways I must say this store is like walking into grandma's house. In a strange way it feels like home when you walk in... Ya' see you've got your uncle sittin' on the front stoop tryin' to bum a dollar off a you when you enter. Then there's your aunties, who pay you no mind, when you walk in gossiping away. As you make your way to the "kitchen" you hear the familiar, "scrrraaaape scrrraaaape" of grandma cleaning the scales off the fish grandpa your brought back from his latest fishing trip. Taking into account the variety of foods offered (even a few things I've never seen at Lee Lee's), the friendliness of the staff, prices and neighborhood (don't think I'd visit this place after dark) I'd say this is a solid 3 right now. I will definitely go back again when I need more Asian fare in the future. read more

First off the good...The market is definitely bigger than it looks. You will find a lot more than expected. It is also conveniently located to many things. Now the unfortunate part of this place is that it does not look sanitary. The shelves are stocked but who knows how long they've been there. I have not tried their prepared food, but worry about how clean everything is. I definitely do not think this place would pass a health inspection. If the my emptied it out more and gave it a good scrub, I'd be happier. That being said if I need a last minute item, it's still there...as long as said item can be washed, cooked to oblivion, or has an extensive shelf life. read more

Mochi mochi mochi! A mochi source near my neighborhood, not all the way out at Cofco or, worse yet, in Chandler. This is a hole-in-the-wall market, bigger than a bodega but not at all on a supermercado scale. It has a lot of noodles. Honestly, it has more noodles than seems logically possible. There is an aisle of Indian sauces, which is excellent, because no matter how much I like the Indian market in Tempe, it's a haul. There is an aisle of Mexican beans and other Goya products, which I thought a little pricey but I didn't take a full look for anything exotic. There are shrimp crackers. There are completely inexplicable boxed pastries, as well as packaged moon pies (the Chinese kind, not the North Carolina kind). There is an aisle of rice cookers and little blue bowls. This is not your spot for frozen wonders -- I think the cold section might be only refrigerated, and I'm not sure I even understood much of what it was. In general, you'll want to be able to sort of cook, at least on the level of rehydrating your noodles, reheating your Beef Balls (actual product), and heating them in a helpful jar of sauce. The lighting runs dim, but I wouldn't have said it's dirty or smelly; I've been to far, far grungier places in small towns back East. The staff don't necessarily speak English (or, at least, not to you), so you'll want to be confident in the thing you're doing (or so devil-may-care that you will regard it as a pleasant surprise if a mystery can turns out to be tripe in bitter melon sauce, which I can't guarantee is an actual product, but I can't guarantee it isn't, either). Also: the truly daring can get pastries filled with durian creme. I'm going with four stars because the place is jammed with useful ingredients, and it is a frequent source of frustration to me that regular supermarkets have "Asian" sections consisting of three cans of Chun King products and a couple of Thai boxed dinners, with no Indian food at all. So I'm looking mostly for "exotic" ingredients and emergency mochi; if the butcher counter inspires terror, I've probably already bought meat elsewhere in a form that doesn't dispute my belief that hamburger grows on trees in little plastic-wrapped packages. read more

Yowza this place is fish fresh. And you will smell like it for the rest of the day if you spend more than seven nanoseconds inside. It's bigger than you would think from the outside with rows and rows of cookware, canned..everything, and noodles. Oh the noodles! I love buying all sorts of them and experiementing with for weeks until I run out. Ramem noodles from Asian markets are the only ones worth eating. There's nothing too spectacular about Tan Phat, it's a little run-down, quite disorganized, and the staff won't greet you... or say hi when you come to the register... or let's face it-- they won't say anything to you at all. However, it's a great resource for trying new types of food and cooking, and a super convenient location. read more

When shopping is an adventure and a destination, you must be heading to Tan Phat. This is a funky Asian market that has been there for me whenever I need water chestnuts (for wrapping in bacon, and they carry five different brands! Who knew so many companies were in the business of the water chestnut?) or kitchen supplies for Asian themed dinners. One of the first things that hits you upon entering in the smell of seafood. After acclimating to that, you'll find a huge selection of canned goods, dried seafood and mushrooms, a decent selection of fresh produce and an ample amount of "novelty" edibles (you know, those intriguingly package foodstuffs that you just can't find outside of Asian markets). The employees are usually polite. You may have to walk through every aisle to find what you need, but that's part of the adventure. read more

Not all Asian markets are made equal. Tan Phat is no exception. And we have not been impressed by this store...sadly, too, as it's so close to home. Here's the run down. The organization of the store is fine. At one end they have large refrigerators (maybe freezers?) and kitchen tools/dining supplies. At the other they have produce. Along the back wall they have a variety of fresh meats. I'll admit, we've bought very little here, though partly because we were unable to FIND what we were looking for. Everything in between seems to be organized by categories, some very specific some very broad: there's an aisle for rice noodles, almost exclusively, and another for Indian products. While the store is pretty large (two or three times the size of our favorite little Viet store back in Utah), the selection seems to be pretty sparse. The shelves have a lot of the same taking up a lot of the space. We have tried to find flat broad wheat noodles (which seem to be hard to find in Phoenix, to be fair) and Hon-dashi, both to no avail. We also were unable to find anything but soft tofu on one visit. I think the biggest hang up for me, just before the lack of merchandise, is the difficulty we've had in communicating with the staff. While I'm by no means an ardent believer of "In Murica we speak English!" I feel that if you're going to open a business that does draw a diverse clientele (I've seen others of various backgrounds, who also don't speak Vietnamese) it's important to expand your vocabulary enough to meet the needs and answer the questions of patrons. This does not appear to be a priority for this business, and, as such, we're willing to make the drive to LF Market on Bell Rd instead. I've also noticed others mention the cleanliness of the store and, well, I don't really care, to be honest. I've noticed lots of stores similar to Tan Phat are comparably dingy. It's not a priority for me, though. I actually kind of like that feel over the sterilized feeling in most American grocery stores. Now, if you speak Vietnamese, and your wants are within their stock, by all means, come here. We still do, sometimes, but it's certainly _not_ our go-to store. read more

Giving this place one star for carrying daifuku mochi (adzuki bean), albeit the processed, boxed kind. Other than that, this market was dirty, disorganized, poorly-lit, prices were poorly marked, and it was not customer-friendly in any way. Zero service. While the staff at other small specialty Asian markets (not Lee Lee) will ask if you need help, here that didn't happen. There was a TINY hand-written note on the cash register stating a $10 minimum for credit card use. Thank goodness I saw that before I looked dumb trying to use mine for a single box of mochi. I won't be back. Lee Lee carries fresh mochi, if you can catch it in stock. New Tokyo has a better brand of packaged mochi (plus frozen types). Cost Plus is closer and much more enjoyable to shop at, and their packaged mochi is only a little worse tasting than the brand this market carries. read more

Smells odd in there. Would not purchase any meat/fish there. Most condiments didn't seem to have best by shelf dates on them, so I couldn't tell how fresh or old they were. The vegetable section was great. Very fresh. Seems many people and the next door restaurant purchase the vegetables, so they rotate often and do not get old or spoil. They have bitter melon and it was very good. Okra was very fresh. And they have 3 sizes of bok choy and it was very fresh and tasty. Recommend it. But you have to be wise to what is fresh and what may not be fresh. read more

We've been going here for years, to obtain products hard to find elsewhere. They have good produce, decent meat, a good variety of Chinese medicines and ointments (more expensive to buy in the US than in China, so if traveling in China, stock up), and many other products that are healthy and exotic.The place is bigger than it appears on the outside. Asian medicine found in the US is almost always Chinese, and other Asian nationalities will sell this in their stores. We use Western prescription medicine whenever needed, obviously, but if it's something over the counter you can buy, the Chinese have much better products than the West does. Again, this store is Vietnamese but carries Chinese medicines. My only caveat is that it's often difficult to find someone who knows English for asking questions.........for this, go to the back near the bathroom and produce, sometimes a staff there speaks English, the people at the register don't. This is a Vietnamese shopping plaza, but many Westerners shop here too. read more

Ok, my original plan was to go for the mochi. And they did have mochi, even some made in-house. But I discovered so much more, which is why they have 3.5 (4) stars. First off, it's bigger than it looks from the outside. And there were a lot of things that I didn't think I could find to cook at home so that I might enjoy it without the cost of going out. That being said, there is a lack of customer service. The most I was spoken to was the lady telling me my total. And it is kind of dim in there. I think this is why it might look kind of dirty but it did look a little dirty to me too. I guess I would say that I gave it 3 stars just because there was so much that I will be going back for later, when I have the right recipes and such. I didn't find the mochi ice cream I was hoping for, so no star for that. It's also a bit pricey but that's pretty expected. I gave it half a star for taking EBT too. The only reason it's at 4 is because I'm in a good mood from my mochi and I'm rounding up. read more

Very good variety of several different asian regions. Obviously not as big as Lee Lee's in Chandler, but obviously the best in the area. Even the homeless guy that lives around there is polite! lol J/K But it's pretty much a nice sized asian market when looking for your ingredients for asian cooking that you can't find at the grocery store. A fairly good selection for a market this small. I'm not sure that I'm brave enough to purchase "fresh" fish, poultry or meat here however. Not dirty dirty, but not clean either. Produce is abysmal. You also will not receive any help here. You can ask for assistance, but the most I have ever gotten was an index finger pointing to "NUMBER 9!" (meaning the aisle number). Good, fresh, selection of Asian and other ethnic fruits and vegetables. Been craving the pork dumplings that are made there.... large well seasoned pork dumplings with a half hard-boiled egg in the one that I got. (not sure if there is egg in everyone) Large selection of noodles, canned vegetables, fruits, coconut milk, fish sauce, hot sauces and more. There is a refrigerated section in and fresh produce in the north side of the store, good size meat counter on the west and frozen foods in the north part. I will be back for the dumplings soon. Hope that I can freeze them and keep a supply in my freezer. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is the difficulty of finding someone that speaks English to help me find an item that I was looking for. read more

Its great place to buy fresh vegetables. We can find all fresh Indian vegetables. Note that, they will get vegetables stock on Wednesday and will be over by evening. Vegetables are very fresh and available in reasonable price. They baked fresh bread and its awesome. I never tried non veg and other items. They do have lot of noodles. I must be spoiled and realize that this is not a big grocery store. I tend to think the store is a good place in a pinch for Asian ingredients. Mostly, Chinese and Vietnamese products for those looking for Japanese products might have to go elsewhere. In a pinch it is great, hopefully with local support this store can improve. read more
