Patient Experience and Concerns at Fuller Hospital Introduction This letter has been sent to contact us because patients are unable to express their concerns to administrators, as they are never informed. Initial Experience and Lack of Understanding I was at your facility for help with depression and anxiety. I only met Dr. Haz once and was told I do not know anything about my genetic condition. Hypophosphatasia, which my son and I are the only two individuals diagnosed with in Rhode Island. Dr. Haz looked up the condition hyperphosphatemia instead, which is a completely different medical issue. Concerns During Stay During my stay, I observed significant concern for patient safety as it takes two days or more to get medication approved. Staff failed to follow my primary care provider's instructions regarding medication, and nearly ruined my enzyme replacement medication, which costs $144,000 per month. I was given the wrong Keppra medication, and other wards would enter to take medication, snacks, and nutrition replacement drinks. Staff were also unable to keep track of food allergies or comply with dietary restrictions. Night Shift Conduct and Ward Environment The night shift treated the ward like a slumber party, yelling down the halls and asking patients if they wanted chips and salsa. Bullying was allowed, and inappropriate language was used openly. There was a lack of respect for religious beliefs and practices among both shifts. Personal Belongings and Medical Emergencies Staff stole $20 worth of hair oil from me, and I was sent to the emergency room due to a seizure. My PCP remains unaware of which hospital or treatment was provided. My PCP only learned of my admission after my husband called, following my report that my medication was being mishandled. Staff claimed I was lying about having spinal cord issues, despite documentation from my PCP, orthopedist, and physical therapist. Provider Conduct and Lack of Follow-Up The conduct of Dr. Haz's employees was unprofessional; Dr. Haz was present until 10 a.m. but left at 9:30 a.m. after a disagreement with a patient, leaving no one available for further consultations. I requested a new provider due to his rude behavior and abandonment of staff, but was told only to speak with the staff, which did not address the larger issue. A request to speak with the unit manager was ignored, and my hair oil was not returned upon discharge. Food Allergies and Dietary Concerns The hospital failed to accommodate my documented food allergies. I have severe allergies to beef, chipotle, strawberries, caramel, coconut, and lactose intolerance. Despite informing three staff members on my first day, my first meal included beef gravy, which caused illness within minutes. My allergy information was not acknowledged or recorded properly, even though I made it a point to notify everyone. Lack of Support for Mental Health Needs During my time at the facility, I received no help from depression or anxiety. I left feeling numb, and my PCP had to arrange intensive outpatient services, as Fuller Hospital provided no relevant mental health support. There were no meetings with a psychiatrist or therapist; instead, group meetings focused solely on alcohol and drug addiction, ignoring issues of depression and anxiety. Inconsistent Policies and Patient Safety Some patients were allowed to keep personal items in their rooms, while others, including myself, were not permitted to do so. My roommate was allowed a hairbrush, colored pencils, and food, but I was not allowed to keep paperwork or a hairbrush. She was also breaking a non-contact order without any intervention from staff. Conclusion and Appeal for Action I am uncertain whether sending this letter to you and the Departments of Health in Massachusetts and Rhode Island will help address these serious issues. This hospital should not be called a hospital, but rather a circus that is not properly governed. Staff encourages kids to punch walls to deal with their emotions, but without doctor approval cannot offer first aid. They get 30 minutes outside in a courtyard joined by adults from other wards.' HVAC Is on overdrive so kids wear sweats in 90 degree weather.' The doctor in charge is charitably a moron but more likely a grifter. She was quick to diagnose and dismissed contrary evidence from prior neuropsych testing. Her "guy" for Neuropsychs (who is old enough to have interacted with the Boston Strangler when he was a medical student) does not trouble himself with diagnostics that are approved by current literature. But she can diagnose big for insurance reimbursement. My biggest issue with this place is rhat we tried to work with them on appropriate discharge timing. A piece of this was titrating up my child's medication. We asked for safe titration rates, release as soon as reasonable. What we did not know was that the medication was titrated well Ahead of the communicated scheduled and my kid would be out once insurance said so. My kid was discharged with zero notice when insurance ran out and ended up in hospital for several days with an adverse reaction to the rapid titration. Every clinician we have seen subsequently (which are many) has questioned the diagnosis and criticized the medical approach at Fuller. This is an insurance scam with a negligent medical director. If I could give this place negative stars I would. I wouldn't leave a stray rabid cat with mange at this facility let alone a human. If your "care" team(and I would never associate care with this facility) consists of Ashley and Nick, run don't walk with your loved one away from this facility. The lack of meeting the most basic of care and concern for humans is mind boggling and their "treatment" was completely egregious. Lucky for us we took meticulous notes and have the staff members names who noted that these two are notorious for poor standard of care. The bottom line is all the staff was egregious because none of them spoke up even though they all agreed what was happening with our loved one was horrific. My experience at Fuller's Adult Partial Hospitalization Program was extremely positive. My two weeks were a much needed transition from my two plus weeks in a hospital for an anxiety disorder to everyday life. Jillian Bradley, the nurse practitioner, is top notch. She made herself available whenever I had a question or concern and promptly took care of it. I didn't have to worry about my prescriptions, because Jillian made sure they were accurate and refilled on time. The group facilitators, Kevin, Yael, and Kristy, put me at ease and kept the conversations on an even keel. I highly recommend the program. read more

This place was extremely abusive. I have to now correct a lot of the emotions and negativity ENFORCED on me the entire duration of my stay there, which never should have happened. Especially a staff member, Glen, who rather than help me with my mental health kept saying I am there because of my parents and that my parents think I am crap. Mind you this is a staff member, where we have to live, and if we move a muscle we can still get an assault charge as in the real world. I'm giving this place one star because of the impossibility of trying to call in and talk to a patient, or anyone for that matter. My nephew has been inpatient there for a few weeks now and when I call the operator sometimes I let it ring 15 times and nobody answers or they hang up. When they connect me to the unit it just rings and rings! Ridiculous! I'd finally get a hold of somebody and they told me nobody was on that unit during weekends?? What does that mean? I was hospitalized at this hospital several years ago and I'm still processing the trauma I experienced from my stay. A staff member physically yanked on my arm and twisted it when I was standing up. They told me that I had some dust on my sleeve that needed to be wiped away. I felt like the staff member invented this scenario to touch me. I saw a young woman/patient be dragged to her room without any warning. This woman refused to have blood work done which was her right to refuse medical care. Multiple staff jumped on her and gave her rug burn by dragging her across the floor. Unfortunately I have been hospitalized before in NH hospitals. The staff would give the patients warnings before touching them and they would use a counting system. This hospital would not warn the patients before physically restraining them. One of the staff members got angry at the patients. She started yelling swears and throwing oranges at us. It was extremely unprofessional and the experience made me feel like some of the staff should have been hospitalized themselves. I remember that the hospital would write classes on a dry erase board each day and not actually have the classes. It felt like a facade to me for state funding. The staff wouldn't unlock our bathrooms for us when we needed to use them. Because the hospital was understaffed there was always a long wait time. I saw one patient pee in the community kitchen sink and other patients peed in cups. I couldn't blame the patients for doing this. I felt like I was treated with so much disrespect from the staff during my stay. I felt like I was in prison or treated like a dog at times. I'm an educated person and I had a professional job outside of being hospitalized. I've also been hospitalized at other hospitals so I could compare my experience. I had an emotional breakdown after three days of being in this hospital and I wanted to leave desperately. At other hospitals I felt safe, taken care of and like I was on vacation from my worldly problems. There was a homeless man who I believe had schizophrenia in my unit. He enjoyed answering the payphone in our unit when a family member would call. One of the nurses would call our payphone and she would mess with this patient for laughs. She would trigger him on purpose then laugh about it. There were a few nights where I didn't get any sleep because a nurse kept shining a flashlight in my eyes during checks. I complained about this to my doctor and they corrected it. This hospital discharged me without giving me any discharge papers. When my psychiatrist called the hospital to find out which meds I had been prescribed they didn't have any medical records for me. My psychiatrist wasn't happy, but I was so grateful to not be in that hospital anymore. I felt like most of the staff at this hospital were extremely unprofessional. The only exception I remember was a main chef who worked in the kitchen who was a nice person. He would print out poems for the patients who were leaving the hospital. I feel like this hospital could be involved in lawsuits because of their conduct towards patients and for understaffing. If you'd prefer your loved one to stay in a facility where multiple patient deaths haven't occurred, steer clear from Fuller Hospital. South Coast Today covers a patient murdering another patient in 1997. Crowe & Harris law firm covers a patient being neglected who ended up dying in 2007. The Boston Globe covers a patient having blunt-force injuries that a state panel determined as abuse when staff could not explain properly how she had so many injuries. She died in 2010. - I definitely posted a review before & can't see it now. I mentioned a lot of issues on my review on Google. There was more on Facebook, but Fuller Hospital has since taken Facebook reviews down. I went down a list of a lot of UHS-owned hospitals & only one actually still had reviews open. I find it interesting their former CEO, Rachel Legend, was so persistent about how police would never request footage to see where my missing belongings went (hundreds of dollars worth, but the sentimental value is worth a million times more to me). I've suspected for a while they were maybe stolen or did not want to pay for belongings that were proven to be lost by them. I was completely unsurprised to see The Sun Chronicle cover Fuller Hospital destroying surveillance footage in 2019. I also read an employee review on Indeed where a staff member was told to stay away from the cameras in case they got assaulted. - Staff were also in general cruel. I had an anxiety attack one of my first days. I didn't hurt myself or anyone else, & one grabbed my arm, I think she said something along the lines of I should come with her. This event was very triggering, a big reminder of something that should stay in the past, & I shouted, "DON'T FUCKING TOUCH ME!!" & then she had two other staff along with her grab me & take me to my room...further reminding me of said past experience. After that, I was in a bad mental state & started hurting myself. That very likely would have never occurred if not for the actions of the staff. I know one patient got assaulted (I did not witness it myself, I am pretty sure a friend of mine did). Some days later, the patient who did the assault caused a fight. The patient who was assaulted said something along the lines of, "Why is he still here?? He causes fights ALL the time. He assaulted me, & I told every staff on unit that day, & they did NOTHING!" The staff replied sounding completely uninterested, saying, "I didn't know that." No trace of empathy. After that, when the same patient made some really creepy comments to me...of course I didn't say anything to staff :) Why would I? It would've ended the same way things did for her. They would've done f*cking nothing. I would've NATURALLY become irate, & that would've only worked against me. You learn who your enemies are very quickly here. Mine were definitely mainly the staff (as well as the former CEO who went so far as to call patient deaths "conspiracy theories"). There were a few exceptions for the staff. read more

Facility was full of ants and staff were aware of the situation. staff stated to visitors that they were short staffed and cleaning was a low priority. Ants were on all my family members clothes and belongings when we left the facility. Staff also were giving my family member a medicine that they were allergic despite being notified multiple times to not give the medicine. My family member ended up in the hospital with anaphylaxis and still hasn't been seen by a psychiatrist more then 30 days after being discharged from this facility. If you cherish your family choose another place. If you're trying to get rid of a family member for good send them here. if I didn't advocate for my family member he would be dead right now. Ironically when you go to report this place to JCAHO they don't show up on the website! As a healthcare worker myself (RN) I wrongfully trusted this facility and it's staff to care and treat my family member. The DON is not reachable and the CEO is only worried about his profits. If I could give zero stars I would. This is a horrible facility to work in never mind be a patient at. I am a former employee and I have never worked or seen an environment like this. Between the dirtiness of constant bedbug outbreaks to mold all over the facility with no ventilation this place needs to be condemned. This facility administration are just bodies collecting a paycheck. I have only encountered a handful of staff that actually care about these patients. This hospital is run by uncertified, uneducated people who are called mental health staff only needing a highschool diploma. Benefits are also falsely advertised. HR can not seem to get anything accomplished besides the new hire paperwork because the turnover rate is so high. They are completing orientations every 2 weeks. Now if that isn't a red flag. I read many reviews and was very skeptical to send my daughter to this facility. I have to be honest, it was very accommodating to her needs during her two week stay. If a release is signed by the patient, The communication between staff and family is excellent. I would like to give a big shout out to the staff members I was in contact with! All of the Unit 5 staff members were wonderful! The case manger and intern were absolutely amazing! They went above and beyond for our daughter ! They were so empathetic and took time out of their busy days to talk with us and listen to our concerns! I feel any patient will get a lot out of this program if they are open to getting the help they need! I'm a former employee and I wouldn't recommend this place. I often felt bad for the Patients. I used to enjoy engaging with them regardless of what unit I was placed on. I was kind and enjoyed talking to them and getting to know them personally. Granted I've met some really amazing staff there who also enjoyed engaging and genuinely cared for patients. However, upper management make it unbearable to work under a therapeutic and calm environment. Patients and staff are just numbers and that's the unfortunate truth. Stressed out nurses and staff on doubles scurry around with sadness in their eyes due to being overwhelmed, over worked and over stressed. Our adult daughter just spent a month in Fuller. She has severe Bipolar 1 disorder. She has had 24+ hospitalizations over 22+ years. We are very active in her treatment and found Fuller to be very good in caring for her. They listened when I discussed her success with certain medications. The case manager was there for her, listened and worked with her. Her psychiatrist listened to me and to her. She is now the best we've seen her in many years. Since our local behavioral health units are all closing we will definitely be looking at Fuller if she needs any additional care. Our daughter also feels that the environment..... a cafeteria, gym and outside courtyard were excellent. Thank you. read more

I got sent to B wing or something and there's NOTHING to do besides color, play uno and other card games, one of the patients tried getting me to sell drugs FOR him super boring the only good things were phone calls, the decent food and they held groups for anxiety, self care etc, and got to go outside and play basketball as well. Someone on my second day was yelling "I wanna go home" people were talking to themselves there and also some girl kicked the wall and the people there were waltzing in my room at random times while people are TRYING to sleep again dont. I was terrified going into this program due to trauma from pembroke but quickly found out that the staff at fuller hospital program for the youth actually care about you and will do everything they can to help you with your mental health. HORRIBLE experience here. Some of the staff were kind and seemed to genuinely care but overall, I feel that my mental health deteriorated in here rather than improved. You only see your psychiatrist and case worker for maybe 5-6 minutes maximum, and you have no access to either on weekends. Staying in here my mental health again didn't improve, however I learned that I was great at uno and word searches because there isn't much else to keep you occupied. On the bright side I also lost weight in here because the food was atrocious. Stay away from this institution if you can because it's comparable to a very high security preschool. read more

I think they have an excellent program here. I would recommend it to anyone with a child who suffers from mental illness and has a disability. It's a relaxed ,learning environment. The children are not on lock down . The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Decent food and activities . This is a very dark place, perhaps the worst of the Arbor system, which is quite difficult to achieve. We found the social worker to be completely unresponsive. Was wrongly sectioned and sent here. Worst experience of my life! The doctor I had claimed I had severe postpartum depression and ptsd. He told this to my fiancee and parents. Upon discharge I was told I was bipolar. Which was never disclosed to me or anyone else until I questioned the charge nurse upon discharge what my final diagnosis was. I am not bipolar, and my career is over now because of this doctor's diagnosis. During my stay I had experienced renal problems. The first night, they brought me to the ER were I was treated for a UTI. The next morning, I asked the med nurse for my antibiotics, they apparently "didn't have an order" and missed several doses of the antibiotic. I got sicker. I was discharged and the very next day was admitted to the hospital for a massive kidney infection and am still there. The place is disgusting and not clean for a medical facility. Some of the staff is nice, otherwise they treat most of there residents like caged animals. You meet with a therapist once and the social workers basically ignore you. To put it simply, I am not only mentally scarred from being sent here, but have also lost my one career path that I had longed to achieve. I'm barely 25... I had to post after seeing these reviews. My daughter has had not one, but two hospitalizations at Fuller over the last two years. The experience has been fantastic (if you can say that when your kid is sick) from the physician to the social worker who found my daughter a 30 day program. This has been a long road for my husband and I but Fuller has done more than any other hospital (and we've been in a lot unfortunately). I understand some people here saying they were held against their will, but honestly my daughter would probably said the same when she was in the throws of her mental illness. Do not go to Fuller hospital psyc. unit. It is filthy! My room had no heat at all. The room where they held so called classes smelled so strongly of mold that I could not go in. You can not use the bathroom without asking because they are locked. Food is disgusting. The patient phone receiver was broken so you can hardly hear. The doctor refused to tell me when I would be discharged. Nurses ignored the patients. Patients wre allowed to scream and behave violently. One patient went after another patient and the solution was to make the victim stay in his room and allow the attacker to continue to pace the hallway. Male patients were entering female patient rooms randomly just walking in and the staff did nothing to stop this. Staff was useless. Patients are just sitting around bored all day. As a former staff I felt bad for the clients. The workers on the floor were great and I saw them treat clients respectfully. However, the social workers blew off everyone and patients were lucky IF they saw a doctor once a week for ten minutes. Their ideas of therapy groups were a joke. And most people from the nursing supervisors up ignored all concerns of clients and mental health workers who were on the floor 40+ hours a week. read more

This is the worst hospital ever! It's not a hospital, it's a prison! They try to manipulate the patients by making them join groups. And if don't join them, they punish you for it by taking away your treats. And if that wasn't awful enough, they also punish you by making you stay there longer! If you disrupt the group they throw you into a room, and put you in solitary confinement. if you cry, they threaten you by making you stay there longer. They treat you like a 4-year old, by rewarding you with candy, and taking away your dessert. A social worker who works there was threatening to hit me! The people who work here are very stupid and unprofessional. They don't deserve to be in the medical field. I had a splitting headache, and the nurse just gave me water for it. I had trouble sleeping and they didn't give anything for it. The people who work there are stupid and unprofessional. They shouldn't even be working here! Also they strap you to a board, and refuse to let you off until you stop crying. I was also called a crybaby by one of the workers. They don't seem to know what depression is.They also invade your privacy, by listening to your phone calls, and if you ask to use the phone they make you go last! It's just a way to make the patients stop talking. They make people stay there way too long, and for stupid reasons. If you plan on sending your loved one here, he'll be traumatized for life.
