After my four visits at Function Performance Center (FPC) in 2018, I can truly say with sadness that this clinic has deviated from the patient-centered standard practice and gone to the profit-driven model. After receiving spinal fusion surgery in 2014, I have worked with some great PTs at some premier PT clinics in the US (Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Body Gears PT, etc.) and achieved life-changing results. By comparison, I think Derek Steveson at FPC is the most questionable PT I have ever met. I found Derek through Dr. Anikar Chhabra at Mayo Clinic, Phoenix campus. At that time I developed knee pain from frequent hiking and swimming. At the beginning of my first visit to Derek, the receptionist asked me to verify my insurance information on paper. I noticed a section with a handwritten entry that said "Custom Shoe Orthotics: not covered by insurance". Instantly, alarm bells went off in my mind. Later, I was taken to the treatment room. Before he even examined my feet, Derek seemed visibly disturbed and complained that my "cheap" health insurance wouldn't cover custom orthotics. He also told me to buy new shoes, and specifically to go to a shoe shop called "Sole Sports" with a 10% discount. "SCAM...RUN" I immediately thought. I decided not to see Derek again. Fast forward 10 months. I saved some extra money and thought "Maybe I should give Derek and his custom shoe orthotics a try. After all, he is recommended by a Mayo doctor." So, I paid and got his custom orthotics. Also, I bought Mizuno Wave Inspire 14 shoes from Amazon to pair with the insert. After a few days of trying them out, I noticed that my foot still overpronated the same way as it did without the insert. So, I went back to Derek... and suddenly, he became very defensive! In front of all the patients and staff, he scolded me with a loud voice for not continuing PT with him. (As stated above, I was scared of being scammed after the first visit.) To test the inserts, he asked me to do over 15 single leg squats on the orthotics that didn't fit my feet--without shoes. Ouch, that made my knees hurt! He also blamed me for not going to his designated shoe shop, Sole Sports, and said my Mizuno Wave Inspire shoes were terrible. (Truth be told, the Mayo doctor, Dr. Anikar Chhabra, told me that I didn't actually need custom orthotics to begin with; also, I did visit Sole Sports--their sales guy observed my gait and told me I didn't need a shoe insert at all!) After agreeing to send my shoe inserts back to the lab for adjustment, he made sure that everyone could hear I was a difficult patient who didn't follow instructions. I left the clinic feeling completely shocked and humiliated. At the time of this writing, I'm feeling very sad that in this great country where the medical excellency is admired worldover, there are corners where medical professionals are not striving to meet or raise the standard, but instead go low for the sake of profits. read more

I drive from south Tempe and would happily drive from Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale or Phoenix due to their expertise. This is a great physical therapy center. Sara and Derek are very knowledgeable and they take the time to understand what you are trying to accomplish. Sara has done wonders for me and the teams of interns are always helpful. The office staff is very helpful and they always work with me to find a time that fits my schedule. I have been coming to Functional Performance Center (FPC) off and on for many years for various needs. Derek or one of the other therapists (Sara and Brook) are the BEST. They will do a thorough history and exam and listen to what you what your goals are. They then work with you to achieve those goals. The office staff is amazing also. Your calls are answered by live people. Along with your in-clinic therapy you are provided with exercises you can do at home or on the go (with no special equipment) to help keep you in tiptop condition. So if you need a physical therapist or if your not getting results with your current therapist I recommend you call FPC. There is a wide variety of times to pick from and they are easy to get to. (101 and Broadway). A lady I met today comes all the way down from New River to see these folks. Wow! That just tells you what she thinks of FPC. read more

Went in for a pulled leg muscle. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. They have a large therapy room with a lot of sports specific equipment. They were thorough in examining my leg and even noticed my ankle hadn't healed right from a break 15 years ago. I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of PT. read more

If you have torn muscles or in my case need help with mobility you need to call functional perfornance. The office staff will make you feel welcomed and will review insurance options. They are professional and a pleasure to deal with. My physical therapist is sara and she is amazing .she is patient , listens and will research methods to help you. I went to the clinic to prepare for a meniscus operation...had a great experience and my recuperation was very easy and shorter because of my preparation. I then did physical therapy with Derek Steveson and my knee has responded with skiing, hiking and tennis. I have a tear in my other knee...and because of my program, I have not had to have the surgery. I highly recommend the good Doctor! read more

Shelly is a good therapist, very professional. I totally recommend her. On the other hand, Derek (who is the owner) does not take enough time to find out about his patients' condition and give them an appropriate treatment. I got a bad injury while receiving PT under his supervision, and his excuse was that he had a lot of patients at that time and that me coming to PT at that hour was not the best idea... why did they schedule me and all those other patients in the first place if the therapist can't deal with that? All I got from him was an apology and an even worse injury. read more

Functional Performance is a clean and well equipped physical therapy clinic in Tempe. The staff are friendly, but they are overloaded with patients and give you very little attention. The owner is pretty arrogant and is very flirtatious with some of the female clients. He barely listened to me when I came in and had me continue doing exercises that I told him were causing me pain until I ended up with a bad injury from the physical therapy. Months later I am still injured and never received so much as an apology. I would never recommend Functional Performance to anyone. read more

Functional Performance Center is an amazing place. There is a reason their clients range from professional athletes to senior citizens... they know what they are doing. I was physically unable to walk after my injury, and despite my doctors prognosis, I am able to run today. Physical Therapy is NOT as easy as taking a pill. You get out of it what you put into it. That includes giving constant feedback to your therapist as you continue your therapy, so they can monitor your progress. I was asked every session about my pains/progress and my tasks were always adjusted accordingly. Without this team I would be considered handicapped today. I have recommended the FPC to my friends, and they were also very satisfied with this business. I will continue to recommend them to anyone of any age looking for physical therapy. Their staff is professional, friendly, and talented. Best place in the Valley for PT, hands down. read more
