Friendly staff, you just came in, ordered your food and then waited in your car. I ordered the 4 chicken wing dinner with a side of Mac & cheese with rice & gravy. The chicken was juicy but lacked flavor. It was disappointing, the rice & gravy had no salt or flavor. It was bland. The mac & cheese was the best I would give it 4 out of 5 for that item but for almost $20 for a meal and based on recommendations. I felt disappointed and I could have gotten food elsewhere. Now I am willing to give this place another chance and try another item another time. Waited for about an hour to get the wrong order. (3 plates..... completely wrong order. They had given my order to someone else because they gave out two orders with the number 46.) Then to be told "oh that's not your order....but you can keep it" and then (on good faith) gave us a voucher for 3 free plates. Returned 5 days later to collect on the voucher (that I misplaced) but the cashier recognized us and asked for the paper. We told her I lost it so she said we could only get 2 plates. It's not about trying to get "free" food. It's about the principal and the big debacle that we went through five days ago. I don't even have the time span or the breath to want to put it all into words just know it was an ordeal. If you're not a "man" of your word, speaks volumes. My friend comes often enough to wear. I personally wasn't a fan of the ribs I ordered. Thr ribs tasted as if they were baked and not smoked, I can't place fault because I don't recall thr menu stating smoked. I have recommended Funderburk's to family, friends, even colleagues. They honestly have the best soul food in Greensboro, and I've lived here for over 20 years. My go to is their fried fish, yams, macaroni and cheese, and hush puppies. The food is always hot and fresh. However, my last visit wasn't too pleasant. I typically order online and park curbside to receive my order. I'm not sure of her name, but a worker brought me my food with the worst attitude. She asked me my name very aggressively, and I told her. She then handed me my food in disgust. When I said thank you, she gave me an aggressive "mhm", rolled her eyes, and stomped off. I'm not sure what happened, and it took me a second to process it, but I've neverrrr experienced this from the employees. Everyone has always been so nice and I frequent this place! I went inside and ordered two whitening fish specials and one chicken tender meal. I was asked for the make and color of my car and they would bring my food out to me. That was around that was around 4:30pm on a Wednesday. A lady bought my food out to my car and forgot to give me tartar sauce for my fish. Greeted by such a warm and loving welcome, our party of 2 ordered the 4 wings meal and a serving of the Salmon cakes, each with a coleslaw and mac n cheese sides. I have really come to love this little place, located in the most unremarkable, most deserted shopping center in Gboro. This is solid soul food, served up by friendly, gracious people, led by Mr Funderburk, his restaurant's best ambassador! And the word is spreading, the traffic seems to grow each week. 3.5ish stars. I'm pretty picky when it comes to my soul food. While it didn't completely blow me away, the food was pretty solid and the customer service was outstanding which goes a long way in my book. The only complaint I have is the macaroni and cheese was more like cheese on top of noodles and the cornbread was pretty bad. It was hard and crumbly and didn't taste like anything. Maybe I came on an off day as another reviewer mentioned so I will give those another shot. My fried whiting fish special was great! The batter is seasoned perfectly. I preferred it over the fried chicken that my husband got. The greens were good, hot sauce made them better. Yams didn't disappoint at all - sweet, buttery goodness. The potato salad was ok but probably won't order again. I know a lot of people are comparing Funderburks with Stephanie's. I don't love this location but I will stop in here before going to Stephanie's any day. The food and the service is better. read more

We both had the Mac & Cheese and the potato salad. Both were excellent but overshadowed by the perfectly crispy fried chicken. The strawberry cake and lemon meringue pie were enticing but neither of us had left room for it. Having arrived by 5:00 PM, we just were ahead of a flood of regular patron. The fried fish was selling off the shelf. Think we will try that next. There were plenty of seats for dining. It looked like one out of three patrons was takeout. Service was friendly and efficient. You are called for pickup when your order is ready. The place and bathrooms were clean. The smells of great food wafted from the kitchen. Prices were very reasonable. This will be a regular place for us but next time we will try it around 3:00 PM. It has been a long dry spell here in Greensboro and finally I found a place that sells REAL Southern Fried chicken. Now for the food.....the chicken was completely golden brown and looked fantastic, but there was absolutely NO flavor, and plenty of grease. I literally stopped at Dollar General to buy seasoning just to eat the food. The mac-n-cheese was full of grease and also flavorless, the potato salad was ok. Dessert first is a thing. Im only telling you about it now, because I need you to remember to get it. Even if you keep it wrapped up.and save it for later, do yourself a favor and get it first. You'll read why in a minute. But--Before I reached the front door, I had already decided to order potato salad and collard greens. It's common in certain culinary circles to use potato salad as a barometer of culinary prowess. Not only is Funderburk's potato salad excellent, a simple sprinkle of paprika on top is an additional seal of approval on the presentation side of things. The rest of the menu is simple: fried chicken, meatloaf, whiting fish and hot dogs are some of the featured meat options. Each meat can be ordered a la carte or as part of a dinner with any two sides and choice of bread. The fried chicken had a light, crispy and crunchy crust while the meat is silky and juicy. I saved the chicken skin, arguably the best part of fried chicken, until last, dipping it in hot sauce and crunching on it while alternating bites of collard greens. The collard greens were prepared well with big fat ribs of the greens, chopped up within with a little hint of spice. I prefer my greens with a little twang from vinegar, and though these greens had none, there was Texas Pete everything on the table to spice up the joint. The cornbread, made with white cornmeal, has a subtle sweetness and crumbled into my collards upon the first bite, but the potlikker soaked into the crumbly bits. So good. Walk up, place your orders at the counter directly in front of the entrance and the menu is displayed on a flat screen TV high above the counter, on the wall. No meal can be complete without dessert. Do not miss dessert here. I repeat: Do not miss dessert. Several flavors of cake are offered each day. Each piece I have had has been incredibly moist and the frosting, impeccably smooth and creamy, almost like pudding. Strawberry, lemon and orange sherbet are my favorite flavors. Visited two days in a row...guess you can say...I LIKE IT A LOT! On day 1, I came during lunch and the line was near the back of the store. I actually got out of line only to get back in line after deciding to wait it out. My complaint, which has nothing to do with the food, is the layout of the restaurant. When you enter, you are greeted by the line of customers before you. It is a little chaotic because you have to make your way to the back of the line (thank God everyone uses their manners still because you will hear a lot of 'excuse me' while dining here). In addition, there is only one trash can and guess where it is strategically placed...directly beside the line. So, I had to move forward to allow people to drop their trash in the receptacle; then move backwards because here came another person from another direction. I surely burned calories while waiting from doing the 'get out of the way of the trash can dance'. Nonetheless, once I made it to the counter, the server (young girl) was extremely pleasant and helpful. She recommended the biscuits over the cornbread (I learned why on day 2...very dry...just like your Grand mom would make them). I ordered the whiting special and chose macaroni and cheese and fried okra with the fish and fried okra, fried hard. I also ordered the lemonade. I ordered a to-go fish plate for my husband as well (he did not have the time to stay for lunch since the line was so long). We squeezed (literally) into our seats at one of the longer rectangle tables they have (they have two and they offer very minimal space to get in and out). I felt sorry for my husband so we finally moved to a recently vacated two-seater table nearest the bathrooms. The food came and we had to go to the counter to get it. Again, lots of 'excuse me' and 'pardon me' because just like the trash can; the counter is obstructed by waiting patrons. Now, to the food...absolutely delicious. The fish is breaded to perfection and seasoned perfectly; the macaroni was cheesy and just right (I only added pepper to mine) and the fried okra was so freaking tasty. My husband left with his food but he called on his way back to work to rave about the little tastes he had. We were both very satisfied. After posting a picture of my food on Facebook, one of my colleagues begged me to take her the following day; so I did. I ordered the same meal and it was just as tasty. The only difference was that the lemonade was a little different. The day prior it was yellow and this day, it was more of an orange color. Still tasty nonetheless. Overall, great soul food establishment with great customer and very tasty food. I hope they expand to one of the vacant spaces in the strip mall (or even move to a new location) so they can fix their issues with logistics. Definitely worth the 'issues', however. Oh, one other thing, the hours are VERY limited. I hate they close at 6 pm. I would love to bring my kids for dinner but by the time I get off, grab them, it is 6 pm. They just kept running out of things while I waited, in the middle of lunch on a Sunday! 2) the fish and shrimp were so salty! It gave me a headache! This was my first time here and I must say it was amazing. I saw the reviews about how small the place was but it didnt register until I walked in and was like ohhh that's what they meant by small. The place can only seat about 50 people at a time but the tables are really close together. Food wise I have to start with the yelloe cake with chocolate frosting by saying O M G. That was the most delicious, moist, melt in your mouth cake I have ever had from a restaurant and it was worth the 2.50. The fish was really crispy on the outside and hot and flakey on the inside. The mac and cheese needed some salt and pepper but I'm sure they make it like that for a reason but it was still delicious. The yams could have been a little sweeter to me but overall they were still very good. I am the type that loves sugar so maybe to everyone else they would be spot on. The Arnold Palmer (tea and lemonade mix) was delicious my oldest daughter tried to drink all of hers and mine too. My oldest had the kids fish and fries so she was happy. My youngest has the kids chicken nuggets but she was not happy because they didnt have honey mustard but she ate the chicken nuggets anyway.
