It's rare that I walk out of there without something that I love and usually I have to decide between several items because I know I have limited room in my closet! They also give you more cash back/store credit for the clothes you sell to them than a lot of their surrounding competitors. Also, I don't feel like I'm in a thrift store when I'm shopping in there. I feel like they have personally picked out the best of the best to offer their patrons. I got a pair of shoes here that looked in decent condition but I was really hesitant because they were asking for $14 when the original price is $23.70. Overall, the shoe was cute so I'll just save myself $10 and get it right away. I just thought these consignment stores would be a little cheaper for the items they are turning out. I had no problems with the girls working there so customer service was okay. My friend ended up getting a dress for $10 but it was originally from Forever 21. I just usually find 2nd hand stores to have better deals. read more

Good selection on men's clothes. Everything was so funky and run about $10-15. Went back and got myself a cool pair of summer shorts for $18. My friend got a really hip shirt with fabric that feels amazing for $48; these look they they're made new because there are lots of the same kind on a separate rack. read more

I really dug funky monkey. I stopped in here because my friend's GF wanted to come in. Funny how things work out as I was the one walking out having spent money. The t-shirts were what I was mostly looking at. There was a cool variety of shirts running from NO themes to Sly and the Family Stone vintage shirts. I almost pulled the trigger on a 92 Bulls Champions Shirt, but settled for a NO shirt that was a bit nonsensical. This was a fun place to stop in and grab a shirt. Went into this store while killing some time on Magazine street and was one of the best decisions of the day! The store had a variety of unique clothing such as vintage band tees, costumes, wigs, vintage jewelry, unique sunglasses, bohemian two piece jump suits, and even Elton John shoes. Ended up purchasing a pair of sturdy sunglasses for $12, manatee socks, and a custom made New Orleans t-shirt. (The shirt design was pressed before me in seconds.) Only complaint would be that some of the clothing is overpriced, but you have to remember that the clothing is all very unique. Definitely would recommend if in the area! read more

I have ben a faithful customer of this shop for many years. I first found it when I was visiting from CA. For the last ten years I have lived in PA and made many trips to this much loved shop. From living in Santa Cruz (a stuck in the 60s-70s hippie lifestyle coastal area) to rural PA was a culture shock...especially the availability of vintage clothes and accesssories. Being in this shop is almost like being "home" again. I also shop online from this fine vendor and can always count on impeccable service and quality. She always lets me know when she gets something that might suit my fancy in my size, she is quick to send me pics and lets me know of her new found goodies! I have also purchased several of her hand made costumes and hats which are original, creative and top quality. I don't generally review retail shops, but my experience here today was enough to make me never want to give them my money again. I went in because I saw a cute flapper headband in the window and I wanted to get it for my niece I'm visiting in San Francisco tomorrow morning. They wouldn't sell it to me. It had a price tag that they were able to look at to tell me the price, but they wouldn't sell it to me. The brilliant reason... They don't want to take anything out of the display window for 3 more days because they don't want to have to replace anything. First of all, how lazy can you be?? Second, it's not like I was asking for a dress off a mannequin. It was a simple flapper headband that they could have replaced with countless others in less than a minute. They tried to tell me to pick a different one, but that was the one I wanted. If a store doesn't want to sell items that they have for sale, then I don't want to shop there. Plain and simple. Why put things with price tags in a display window if you don't want to sell them? I've lived in the neighborhood for years and shop in the store from time to time. Never again. If you don't want to work in retail and do your job... Get another job. The weeks leading up to Xmas should be an expected time to sell. I guess they don't need to make any money here. I'm sure they do fine with the tourist traffic, but as a local, I don't recommend shopping here. In response to owner... I appreciate the response but I also told them I was leaving town the following morning to see my family for the holidays in California and I wanted it as a gift for my niece. I've been shopping at Funky Monkey for years, since before the change of ownership. It's still my favorite shop for used/vintage sequin dresses and accessories. If you manage to visit when a new jewelry shipment has arrived, prepare to shop! I've found some of the best 70s costume jewelry. My current favorites are a gold, 70s poison ring and a huge owl ring that I bought right before NYE. I'm quite shocked by so many negative reviews as I've never had a horrible experience. It's a small shop that gets overly crowded on weekends. Perhaps, that has something to do with the unhappy thoughts. read more

Hey! They were actually nice to me. What's up with that? I went in here because I mentioned to my son that I wanted a Holden Caulfield hat and he told me that I could find one here. At first, I balked because of my previous encounters with snotty employees. Rudeness is *never cool, no matter what kind of haircut you have. Found what I was looking for ($26.00) and the staff was helpful and *gasp* friendly so they deserve a shout-out. Oh, and they have quite a large-ish selection of Gunne Sax if that's your thing. I have a few and the store's buyer told me that they paid fairly for such items since they "appreciate them". There are some really great finds in this store. In fact most of the cool stuff in my closet comes from this store. HOWEVER, the staff is creepy! Lol I have been shopping here consistently for the last three and a half years and I still feel like I'm being watched (and have even on several occasions caught the girl behind the register staring at me like a weirdo as I careened through the front aisles). They should really get a better anti-theft system to avoid such uncanny methods. Also I've noticed they do not appear for assistance unless to ask if you want to "start a room" (probably because they're nervous about you holding so much of their merch!) and I'm also not a fan of the way they make you leave your bag and all valuables to a stranger at the front when they don't even have a tag or sign system for recovering it. It's a shame that their atmosphere and staff do not yet reflect the coolness of their clothes. read more

I came in here after trying a number of other thrift shops on Magazine without any luck, and walked out with a dress, blouse, necklace and handbag I am all really excited about. The selection to me seemed a lot more interesting than the other stores I visited, although of course who knows if I would have felt the same with another day's selection. The prices did seem a little bit high for the area; however, I'm from New York, and none of the items I got would seem overpriced in a thrift shop there. As for the staff, I didn't notice any rude behavior, but again, maybe as a New Yorker I have lower standards for niceness! The sales guy was pleasant enough when I asked to see some jewelry. New Orleanians like to get in costume for just about any reason and Funky Monkey always delivers. They have a wide range of wigs, costumes, funky accessories and just generally cool stuff, some new, some vintage. I often procrastinate on putting my costume together and Funky Monkey is always there to deliver the costume goods, even at the very last minute when everything may be picked over. We've shopped at Funky Monkey before -- my husband scored a leopard bowtie and hat for Mardi Gras -- but I am reviewing mainly because of the tremendous service I got this week. My husband ordered me a vintage iron-on transfer to replicate a T-shirt my mom had when I was a kid. I didn't want to screw it up, so I wanted professionals to put it on a shirt. The ladies at Funky Monkey warned me that old transfers sometimes just don't work, but I assured them they would certainly do a better job than I would, so they agreed to try. One staffer so gently and carefully worked on heating my transfer, pressing it several times and checking to see if it was adhering to a shirt I bought. She took her time and clearly knew the right tricks, including massaging the still-warm shirt with another shirt to get the image to stick. It turned out perfectly and I'm so grateful. Some other reviewers have complained about the service -- my experience could not have been more opposite. read more

Best vintage store! They have a fantastic selection of vintage styles. Tops. Pants. Coats. Dresses. It's 2.5 rooms of pure treasure. I bought 10 pieces. And I'm not the only one who loves this place because store was packed with shoppers. Great vintage and they had some cool resale stuff that still had original tags. My boyfriend got a printed t-shirt and the guy who printed was nice and helpful. They had a handful of cute items and I totally would have bought a skirt from here if they hadn't insisted that I leave my purse at the counter before going into the fitting room. I think it's a bogus policy that is hostile and suspicious of the customer. If you don't trust me not to steal, why should I trust you with my bag while I'm trying on clothes? This is just not a customer-oriented practice and it makes shoppers feel like you're watching them and like they don't even want you in the store in the first place. And, I only had ONE large item to try on and a teeny tiny bag! I couldn't have stolen anything bigger than an altoid. It was bad judgment for them to insist. I used to love this store until a recent visit. I had called earlier this week and was told they closed at 7. I work two jobs so it is hard for me to get anywhere on weekdays. I showed up to the store at 10 minutes until 7 on a Friday because I wanted to buy a wig I had previously seen there for a parade the next day. When I showed up, they were already closed. Not only that, but the people that work there stared at me from inside and shook their head no. I mouthed that I just wanted to buy one thing but they would not even open the door and talk to me, they just kept shaking their no even though they were supposed to be open until 7. Not good business practice to close early and then act rude about it. read more

I took the train to NOLA for a one-week visit and didn't pack much other than shorts. So I needed to find a skirt or dress that I could wear to church; Funky Monkey fit the bill perfectly! I bought two skirts and an "ethnic" dress that were in fine condition and reasonably priced. I was excited to see a "vintage" Ship 'n Shore dress that I probably owned myself at one time. The only drawback is that they open at 11:00 on Saturday, which is curious and inconvenient. Oh yes, one more--they were a bit obnoxious about checking ALL handbags, including my tiny fanny back containing cash and credit cards. read more

Been there more than a few times and have managed to find a couple treasures at good prices. They've got a nice selection for both men and women and manage to mix in some new retro-style lingerie as well. I've experienced the sales people as being either politely indifferent or helpful but never overly friendly. The little shop is usually crowded, half with folks who actually wear vintage/thrift clothes and the other half with folks who squeal about how they would never wear something secondhand no matter how cute it is. I'd find it hard to be chipper at work too, if half the patrons mocked the kind of clothes I wear. Overall, one of the better vintage shops I've been to. read more
