I'm very confused by all the people who gave the fur Traders only one star. Excellent service and beautiful merchandise. I've loved this store since it opened. What I noticed in particular about the store is the quality of the product. So while it's not cheap, it's not supposed to be cheap. It's supposed to be luxurious. And it is! One star for the fur trader brand slippers. Rubber soles literally fell apart, upper was fine. I went in yesterday to seek getting them resoled and was treated as though I wanted something for free! Was told I had to buy a new pair--in an incredibly rude manner I might add--should I want wearable slippers. Not my first encounter with the tall, rude blonde manager. (Audrey?) went in at Christmas time and she was incredibly short and rude when I mentioned gift wrapping after another sales associate said she would help me. She said something along the lines of "we're too busy" after I spent nearly $500 on 7 pairs of slippers. After inquiring further, she said "well, I can't guarantee how quickly well have them wrapped" after I had already told her I would give them time while I shopped elsewhere. Horrible, horrible, horrible. The sales staff is very pushy, which is very annoying. No room to breathe and just browse. The prices are outrageous and quality does not measure up with the pricing. One woman yelled at me for trying on a hat. My husband found a pair of sandals he liked and wanted to wear out of the store. I stayed in the store and was trying on sandals and would complete the transaction. When he went to step outside to put his other shoes in our car RIGHT in front of the store they said he couldn't go out even though I said I was still right there to pay! I called them about a pair of Ugg boots, they had my size and quoted me a price of $165, on the internet they had them for $200. I said great and gave them my credit card number and mailing address. About 15 minutes later they call me back and say that they can't give them to me for $165 they scan for $200. The owner Marjie talked to me and kept saying that the salesgirl was new and gave me the wrong price but I think as far as customer service goes, she should have honored the price and she would have had me as a customer and I would have gone back. Now I will never buy anything from them and I will tell everyone else I know not to shop there either!! BUYER BEWARE! These people will sell you anything they can. I bought shoes here a number of times, but no more. They will quote one price, but then charge you another higher price. They will sell you something with a flaw and refuse to exchange it even within 24 hours. On the last and final occasion I was in there, I went in early in the morning to return a damaged item less than 24 hours after I purchased it. No one else was in the store. They were rude, aggressive and were quite successful in intimidating me. I remain shocked that I was subjected to this treatment. I did get my refund, but only after I called my credit card company. read more

On the plus side, they have some pretty neat stuff, and the staff are friendly. On the minus side, the warranty on their "house branded" stuff is nonexistent. I bought a wallet/credit card case from Fur Traders, and after several months the zipper blew out. Several emails with management indicated that "they have no way of knowing whether I was mis-using the zipper" and therefore they cannot warranty it. I can't begin to think of how I might misuse a credit card case zipper, nor why I would want to. Needless to say, I won't be back. read more

So I think there are three Fur Trader stores along the same street. I guess they couldn't fit everything into one location. I like their boot and slipper collection (fur of course) and their purses. I also like their accessories like fur collars that you can attach to any jacket you already own and so forth. Friendly staff. read more

I cannot stand their customer service practice. I would shop at this store more often if it weren't for the way they hover and stalk me every time I am there. They have a neat selection of shoes and other stuff but something has got to change about the way they treat their customers. I am made to feel so awkward and uncomfortable every time. That is the exact opposite of how you want someone to feel when they are in your store. My most recent visit, I literally had an employee nervously pacing back and forth behind me while I was looking at a pair of shoes. It's not the employees fault either, they are forced to work this way. Great stores that have been around for many years, Our family has been shopping the Fur Trader stores for 3 generations. Prices, quality have always been good, Animal Rights Zealots tend to write negative statements, so take them with a grain of salt.. Went to Nevada City the other day for some Christmas shopping. Found a bunch of really nice items at the Fur Traders. Had a good time with the helpful folks in both the stores I went to. I found some killer deals on beautiful gifts. Bought a cool leather jacket for myself that I couldn't pass up. I would definetly recommend Fur Traders as a good place for unique shopping ideas. I had never been to The Fur Traders, though having lived in NC for a number of years. Mistake! The fluffy merchandise was so appealing from the outside, but the incredibly pushy selling really puts you off wanting to browse longer. I literally got accosted by 3 different sales people at once pushing all manner of things. If you had toned it down A LOT, I would have stayed for at least an hour and likely have bought A LOT. read more

VERY VERY POOR customer service. I bought a russian fur hat and I paid cash for it. I got short change back and then had to request twice for a receipt. Why NO receipt? Are cash purchases handled differently??? After leaving the store, my wife took it out of the bag to try it on and noticed one of the straps had fallen off. The next day I returned to the store to exchange it. They have no refund policy but they have a 30 day exchange policy. They refused to exhange it saying that it was considered used and that this way they protect their customers. "Nobody would want to wear a hat that has been on somebody elses head". So my assumption is, ALL of their hats ARE USED because people are trying them on in the store. The best they would do was repair it. But, my fear is that the orriginal stitching could still fray as it did with the strap. So they have No exchange policy because they consider their hats used once you exit the store. Watch out! Be careful ! Triple check prices and crédit card debits! Inexistant customers service I end up paying 1278$ for a jacket traged at 164$ before tax. The Fur Traders refused to a nul the transaction.....hiding behind their " no refund" policy!!! Again: BUYER BEWARE! The people who run this place have no concept of customer service and behave in a sleazy manner. I placed an order online for some slippers, heard nothing for 8 days - no order status, no shipping confirmation. I contacted them via email saying I wanted to cancel if it had not already shipped - no response for 2 days. Called them next on 6/1and told them I wanted to cancel if not already shipped. I was told someone would call me with the status. No call. The next day I get an email saying the order shipped the day before. Now I'm waiting to talk to the manager about their No Return policy. BUYER BEWARE. I grew up in Nevada County and spent many a day browsing Fur Traders. One day I couldn't resist a $400 sheepskin rug. Brought it home and that night the hair started falling out in chunks. It had dry rot. The next day I brought it back (purchased on Visa) and they refused to give me a refund even though it was defective. The seams were literally pulling through the hide because it was so rotten. They would only offer an exchange, flat REFUSED to put me in contact with the owner and when I finally realized I was out $400 and could either walk away with a new rug or nothing I picked the only other rug that was close to what I had wanted. It was $10 more that the one I brought back. It was the ONLY other rug in the store that was similar to the one I bought.....THEY CHARGED ME THE EXTRA $10 FOR IT. Visa said that since they "technically" offered a replacement there was nothing Visa could do. I have NEVER spent another dime in that store since and neither has my family. Up to then my mom had spent a good $4000 in there over the years. Now she won't set foot in there either. RUDE, DISHONEST, OUT TO MAKE A BUCK AND SELL GARBAGE....I hope the $400 was worth it for the owner-who-remained-nameless. read more

I tried working for The Fur Trader but didn't make it past the two week probationary period. For people complaining about the employees being pushy, you literally have to be if you are going to work there. It's what gets them sales so every employee is taught from the start to follow the customer, and the employees get paid commission for higher priced items. They take turns for each customer that comes in the door. They're there to help you, so don't be too offended, they're literally just doing their job so they don't get fired like I did (feel free to ask for some space!). As for the prices, I agree, they're over-priced. Some of the items are made by the staff or locally made though-ask for these items if that is a big issue for you. They also do repairs on leather and fur items. I personally also had some problems with the store manager and am not surprised by some reviews on here, but rest assured there are some friendly and nice employees as well! I've only ever been able to purchase smaller items from their stores and have never had a problem with the quality of my item or the transaction itself. However I also know what I'm looking for. These stores have a great variety of shoes that are both good-looking and comfortable, but otherwise a lot of their stuff is for tourists and people with a lot of money in their pocket. If you've got money to spare and then some, give them a look. read more

This is the last time that I will ever shop at their stores in Nevada city. My sister wanted to buy me a new pair of slippers for Christmas.The management is only concerned with selling the most that they can. They do not care about the customer at ALL!!!! I have purchased many pairs of slippers and shoes from them in the past but this is the last time that I will ever go to either of their stores again. They state their return policy or exchange policy. DON T believe it!!!! They will not exchange anything even if you buy it with a mark on it (with no discount on it) even if all you want to do is get a size smaller. I never write a review as I really don t ask for much in products but this store has so many negative things that I can say about it that it would take me all day to write a review. BUYER BEWARE!!!! I have lived in Nevada City for over 30 years, and I have been shopping there and also just browsing at times for also that long! I, along with my daughters have always been treated great by everyone at FurTraders, always! And.... one does not need to spend a fortune there to be treated nice! You all do a wonderful job being helpful and not pushy! It's always a pleasure to shop at your stores, keep up the good work! They also make and sew a lot of their beautiful items on site, which they have done for years! All three stores are very nice, also the folks that work there! read more

My parents brought me to the Fur Traders store 30 yaers ago for my first pair of sheepskin slippers. Now they bring my kids ( their grand kids ) for the same quality slippers. Its a Mom & Pop local business that makes a lot of their products. Friendly knowledgeable people and fun to do business with. There are 3 stores with different leathers and fur designs. A favorite shopping place for quality goods. It smells delightful too . read more

Really disappointing. I bought a $130 pair of shoes as a gift and was informed of their policy of exchange only. HOWEVER, they did not have the next size up and could not or would not order it, so we ended up with a store credit that is not good at all three stores, which is something they did not mention when they gave me the spiel about the return policy. This is a problem because there are no children's shoes in the two stores my credit is good for and I can't figure out what else we could possibly need. I was told that the owners could make an exception, but was then called and told that the owner refused. We are local, and my local in-laws warned me strongly against buying from these stores, but I did not listen and now I am sorry. My father in law loves leather and my mother in law loves fur and neither of them will go near this place because of several bad experiences with terrible customer service, poor quality, and inflexibility with returns even when the problem is with the product, not the buyer. My Wife, Dad and I went into this store during the Victorian Christmas festival going on in Nevada City. They look to have nice things but the cost is much higher than other places. I was looking at a leather jacket, not planning to buy. The saleslady comes over and give me this really odd look. I ask her if something is wrong and she tells me yes, she needs that coat. I let her have it since I am not going to purchase it anyways. She then shows it to some teenage kid, who I don't think was planning on really purchasing it anyways. My wife looked at their UGG boots which were about 50% over mall store prices. My Dad was with us and he wanted to get a picture of a hat made from some animal - I had my camera and started to take a picture and hear this screech from the back of the store - NO CAMERAS - maybe they think I am a competitor pricing or I am casing the store - but at that point I turned around and walked out of the store. Also to note, you cannot use a cell phone in the store - apparently it puts their camera system out of commission. I wouldn't think to post this on a public forum, but they had signs all over the store that a cell phone will interfere with their surveillance cameras - sounds like the owner's IQ matches their skill at customer satisfaction. Wanted to exchange a pair of lamb/sheepskin insoles for my used Uggs..because the left was not sewn properly and it was rubbing the wrong way ont he bottom of my foot..it was defective..they cost $12.50..I had spent around $150.00 buying other stuff the same day...went to their store..owner wasn't in to do the exchange, I was told she was out of town..do you know they rather argue than do a simple exchange? The staff/manager had no authority to do so...so I left very upset and frustrated..the manage on call went so far to say the insoles were fine...their was nothing wrong with them! They will say and do anything for the owner. Other merchants have told me that their staff has to wait outside for the owner to open the store. She does't even trust her own staff. What a horrible experience I had there. They have beautiful things...I have to admit...but they cater to tourists..who have probably no intention of returning back to the area..in their travel plans. The owner does not refund for any purchases..period..I don't know any business who uses this refund/exchange policy. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU BUY THERE. Owner never responded and called me back. read more
