She went well beyond what anyone would ever expect from a rescue in trying to help me. I looked at reviews on Yelp, and yes, saw some that weren't as positive as others but what those reviews were showing me was this is someone who has very high standards, like I do. I knew she was the person I wanted to contact. She literally bent over backward trying to find first a foster for the remaining cat, then finally a magnificent, permanent home. It didn't happen overnight but she diligently kept at it, until a fantastic home was found. Ann has a very strong love for cats, that's clear to see, shes been doing rescue and adoption for over 30 years I believe, and I for one went with her organization over all the others because of her high standards. She puts the cats first, over anything else, even at the risk of possibly offending people sometimes, (I know not intentionally), which is what I wanted in a cat rescue. I'm not thin skinned and don't easily get offended especially when I know someone is willing to work their butt off to find cats safe and happy homes. Finding good homes for animals isn't easy folks, I know I used to do it. I would say to those who thought her rude just realize she's looking out for the cats and wants what's best for them, and please don't take things too personally, what she's doing is damn hard work. I think the world of Ann Allen and this organization, she helped me tremendously and is an extremely devoted animal (cat) person. I was very lucky to find her and I think Marin county is very lucky to have her too.

Almost like a family. One morning, up in ALanden Quicksilver Park, going up a steep narrow trail, they suddenly half turned and let rip with ferocious barks. A cougar came racing down the hill, I guess it wanted us for breakfast. Nope. Their utter ferocity in their barking and stance was one obstacle. The second was Bear Spray. That cougar decided quickly that this would not be a good way to start the day. Those two adopted dogs were Loyal, lovable, Protective, Goofy. Play ball? You bet. They loved swimming, exploring and making friends. My lab lived until she was 15. Our Shepsky passed a year or so before. Coppers Dream has always been professional, friendly and easy to approach. We adopted two kittens from Jordan from different litters, and both are cuddly, playful, confident, and in excellent health. Our vet was initially a little skeptical of purebred Ragdolls because she's unfortunately seen some unhealthy ones over the years. But after examining Jordan's kittens, she told us these were some of the healthiest, best-bred Ragdolls she's seen. Jordan is also super responsive and generous with her time. No question ever feels too small, and she truly seems to mean it when she says you're not bothering her. She answers quickly, is deeply knowledgeable, and clearly prioritizes both the kittens' wellbeing and the happiness of the families adopting them. We had only ever adopted from shelters before, so going through a breeder was new territory for us. But it was absolutely worth it. Our kittens came home litter-trained, well-socialized, and unbelievably easy to integrate into our busy house full of kids. They never had a single accident, were affectionate immediately, and aren't fazed by loud noises, including vacuum cleaner! We adopted both kittens when they were 1-3 weeks old without meeting them in person, but Jordan was fantastic about sending regular photos, updates, and honest guidance throughout the process. She never overpromised and was very transparent about what she could and couldn't predict about how they'd turn out. Turns out, ours are perfect -- and we wouldn't change a thing. We adopted a 2 year old kitty from Hopalong at Woodland Pet in Bon Air Center. We had just recently…read moresaid goodbye to our beloved cat who was 20 years old and had been the best companion for us. We weren't looking to get a new kitty so soon, but Dharma was in the back of the store and she was very sweet. They let us play with her and our dog was with us, so we took turns being near Dharma and allowing our dog (who loves our cats) to see her from a distance. All went well. We learned that she had been in the store for a while and had a rough life before she was taken to the shelter. Fast forward to today--she cuddles with my husband who has been very ill and she is his best friend. She learned how to win over the resident cat (with lots of time and some help), and she and our Husky and best friends. She's earned the nickname Drama because she's very good at getting into mischief. The support information from Hopalong was useful. We've had cats our entire lives and still each cat is unique. Having resources at hand is great! The people at Woodland Pet were very helpful in vetting us to make certain that we would be a good, safe home for Dharma and that she would be happy with us. They sent us home with supplies and toys. Because of their continued interest, our dog and I go back to show them photos of Drama earning her nickname.

We adopted her from the shelter when she was two and she lived all the way to fifteen. She was everything to us. After she passed, we waited a while before feeling ready to adopt again. In the meantime, I followed a ton of Bay Area rescue groups on Instagram and checked the Petfinder app regularly. We knew we were drawn to flat-faced breeds, but the most important thing was finding a dog that could get along with our two cats. We actually found a Frenchie through another rescue and even went to meet him at an adoption event. Unfortunately, his foster parent said he didn't do well with other dogs and probably not with cats either. That was a dealbreaker for us. About a month later, during the week of July 4, I came across Sally Sitwell (now renamed Winnie) on Petfinder. Her profile mentioned that she was good with cats, and she sounded perfect for us. I applied right away but didn't hear back for a few days, so I was worried she might have already been adopted. But I totally understood since it was a holiday week and I'm sure they received a ton of applications. Eventually, I got an email from Ruthie, a volunteer, to schedule a 1:1 phone interview. She was really warm and easy to talk to. She explained that she usually handles phone interviews for people interested in brachycephalic breeds since she has experience with them. I shared our story about our late pug and everything we went through with her including surgeries, seizures, and IVDD, and Ruthie could tell we were familiar with the breed's needs. She planned to coordinate a meeting with us, the dog, and the foster parent, but she was going to be out of town. So she looped in Alex from Hopalong and Francesca, the foster mom, so we could set something up directly. We coordinated a visit to meet Winnie at Hopalong in Oakland. I really appreciated how flexible and communicative everyone was. It felt like everyone genuinely wanted the best for this dog. When I first met Francesca and Winnie, I lit up. Winnie was even more adorable in person and so much smaller than I expected. Francesca was such a kind person. She already had a Frenchie and cats, so you could tell she really loves animals. She walked us through all of Winnie's little quirks and her daily routine. A few minutes later my partner arrived and I ran out to get him. I told him right away, "You're going to love her, she's so adorable." The moment he walked in and saw her, he was smiling ear to ear. We ended up spending about 30 minutes with Francesca, chatting and also sharing more about ourselves so she'd feel reassured that Winnie would be going to a loving home. Toward the end of our visit, Alex, the program manager, came out to meet us. She was super bubbly and also a Frenchie owner. We let her know we were all in and wanted to move forward with the adoption. We asked if we could pick Winnie up the next day since we had a bunch of supplies being delivered like her crate, food, and bowls. Francesca was so accommodating and let us come to her house the next day to get her. The whole experience was amazing. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. There were no awkward moments and we felt supported from start to finish. I would recommend this rescue to anyone. Now Winnie is completely spoiled. We originally planned to have her sleep in her crate but that lasted exactly one night. She's now in the bed with us. She's been to the dog park, joined us on restaurant patios, come to work with me, and even had a few spa days. After hearing about her rough start to life, being used for breeding and then dropped off at the Hayward animal shelter, we knew we wanted to give her the best life possible. She is truly the sweetest, most loving dog we could have asked for. We're so grateful to everyone at Marin Humane + Hopalong for bringing her into our lives.

I felt like they listened and cared. -- This is based on our experience trying to adopt a dog from AHAN pre-covid. I saw a dog on petfinder and contacted them and then AHAN reached out to let us know that particular dog was in the process of being adopted but to look at their website for others. So we did and then since I have already filled out an application, I just emailed the person back to let them know I was interested in another dog. Turns out these dogs were in Taiwan which is fine. But the second dog that we were interested in also fell through because then we were told that dog had Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia and their adoption is now pending. They said they will reach out to recommend others but never did. Why would you list a dog for adoption before you can clear them medically? Seems like a waste of time and heart break for people that wanted to adopt.

The house visit might not be something they do during Covid. I have been looking for a rescue for a year using adopt a pet which is a platform where people can rehome their pets and rescues can post theirs. I fell instantly in love with Athena. The description of her was really, really thorough and there were 6 videos of her in different situations (with children, other dogs, on leash walking near a dog, playing with dogs, etc.) it really gave me a great picture of her personality and behavior. The process was easy once I went through the interviews. The first interview was with Jessamy and she asked me a lot of questions to ensure that I was able to care for Athena and that my place was adequate for her. I then had another FaceTime to meet Athena (who was in Taiwan) and that only reinforced that I wanted her. I sent over a donation for Athena and her crate. [Side note, I do not think that the suggested donation covers more than 40% of the total care they invest in their dogs. Athena has all her shots, a minor surgery, scans/radios and so much paperwork from her vet in Taiwan because they really take care of their health. The food she was given was good food (Royal Canin) and she had really good joint supplements. She also had toys and a blanket. The flight was covered by AHAN and so was half the crate. Also she received basic training and was potty trained, could sit/lay down and walk on a leash. If you can donate more or on a regular basis, please do. If you can't, adopting those wonderful pets is already amazing so thank you!] Within a week, Jessamy and her team took care of everything. Flights, instructions on how to pick up the dogs, crate sizes (to place in car after pick up). When I met Athena at the airport it was the best day of my life. I was there with 4 other families, all eagerly awaiting their furry baby. Jessamy stayed in San Francisco and visited all the families to make sure the dogs were acclimated. She provided really great training advice and made sure that I was comfortable with Athena. I did additional training with Athena and a trainer here which I highly recommend if you're getting ANY dog ANYWHERE. Also I'd like to share that the size of your home doesn't matter - it's the number of walks and quality of those that does. I lived in a studio (550 square feet) for the first 8 months in San Francisco. Athena is a 50lbs dog and was super happy. We do a walk in the morning (30mn), long afternoon one (45-60mn) and evening one (20mn). I cannot thank AHAN, Jessamy and their incredible team of volunteers for the work that they do. He diligently followed my instructions, which included three different kinds of food and two scales. (I could tell because the right amount of food was gone when I came home.) He soothed me when I worried about my kitties, and sent pictures when I asked. He brought in my packages, cleaned all three kitty litters, and followed all the other ridiculously-specific instructions I gave. When we talked about my cats when I came back, I could tell that he really spent time getting to know these exact cats; he didn't just treat them as another ball of fur to be fed & watered. Everyone's pets are special to their owners; let Mike sit for you and he'll take special care of them, too.
