DON'T. Ozzie's Pound puppies has had their business license as a non-profit suspended for over a year. They were wildly disorganized even when their permit was in effect. They gave the original adopters of my dog a blank page for the adoption certificate, and when reached by phone claimed it was a copy. A copy of a blank unsigned page? My journey to adopt a new dog was unfortunately started my the sudden passing of my faithful senior pup Dakota. It felt weird without a dog in the house, and I'm a huge believer that there are so many dogs out there who need a chance for a new start so I finally gave into the idea of looking. My friend tagged me on Instagram on a post about Harrison, a gentleman terrier mix who looked very cute but sad in his picture. His bio was detailed and sounded like a potential good fit for us. I commented on the picture and sent in an application. Since I live pretty far from Concord/East Bay area -- I was able to take detailed pictures and a video of my house/backyard/etc. instead of doing a home visit. Jessica, the foster mom, was great about communicating quickly with me and answered any questions I had honestly and in detail which I really appreciated. We set up a date to come meet him (after our application was reviewed) at his foster home and were able to take him home for a 1 week (ended up turning into 2 weeks since I wasn't quite ready to take the plunge) trial. The adoption fee is higher than your local shelter, but in return you're getting a fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and socialized dog. You're also getting a invaluable information from someone who KNOWS this dog, knows their quirks, their likes/dislikes, etc. . I adopted Harrison (now Harry) in May and while my heart was still broken from losing Dakota, he really grew on me and now I'm completely obsessed. We happened upon Ozzie's Pound Puppies on instagram when looking for a rescue dog that needed a home. We fell in love with a little scruffy mix named Gizmo and I sent a message. Jessica contacted me and brought Gizmo over for a visit to see if he was a fit for our family. Needless to say, it was love at first site. About a year and half later we decided Giz needed a sibling so there was no question about who to reach out too. Jessica to the rescue (pun intended) and she introduced us to our Hannah. I just adopted a puppy named Jersey (formerly Briar) and we are in love. The foster home the pups were in clearly love their canine charges and wants only the best for them. We had a great experience adopting our puppy. I saw 2 one star reviews here regarding one of Jersey's siblings that was placed for a trial period then taken back because there were some concerns about how well of a fit that puppy was in that home. I understand the people were upset but the whole goal of a good adoption organization is to make sure they place the dogs in an appropriate home. When that goal is not met, the dogs suffer. Two weeks ago i had to put my sweet doxie down. My heart was broken. I was introduced to this wonderful organization. Yesterday I brought home my rescue Angel "Ruby" it was a beautiful experience. The foster home was amazingly clean and they were so loving and professional! When I called them and described my desires for a dog they knew exactly which dog was for me. I adopted my puppy, Bailey, from Ozzies Pound Puppies. The entire experience was wonderful. I've had Bailey for almost three months now and have stayed in constant contact with her foster mom. As a first time dog owner, having a puppy (for me) was up there with having a first child; a new question or concern every day. Ozzie's has been very responsive to my calls, messages and texts; usually replying within minutes! In September of last year my husband and I just found out that we were in Escrow on a new house and were so excited that we would be able to get another dog for our 6 year old Blue Tick Coonhound, Gabe. We were moving to another place with much more space for this breed which needs a lot of room and energy. Out of nowhere, a friend send me a link to Ozzie's Pound Puppies and this beautiful Blue Tick little girl, Dixie. A very rare thing in California! Unfortunately many people get puppies and don't realize the time and effort they entail, especially a working breed. I was instantly in love. And aside from better judgement (moving and packing with a new puppy? Not the best timing!) I couldn't say no to Dixie's face. We brought our boy over to meet Dixie, and Christy who was fostering her. I could tell right off that Christy was someone who genuinely cared about animals and was serious about wanting to find the right fit for this precious little girl. Someone else had already applied to adopt her and then fell off the face of the earth when it was time to commit. I am so glad they did. We picked up Dixie two days later. She had been spayed and was up to date on all of her shots. Christy had even saved one of her baby teeth that had fallen out in case I was the sentimental type (newsflash, I am!) and she went over her medications with me in length (she was still recovering from her surgery and had needed sedation at times to keep her from hurting herself.) The transaction was hassle free and so very HUMAN. I loved that about working with this rescue. They were all people who really really care about the animals they are helping, and they will go to great lengths to ensure all of their dogs end up in the right homes. Even if that means turning people away who do not meet their expectations. Looking back, it was so crazy to take on a new puppy when we did! But for now, our family is complete and Dixie has brought us so much joy. I still send pictures of Dixie as she grows and does silly things from time to time. We just adopted our second child from this organization. A group of volunteers do this, and make an impact for all the right reasons. No way is this a "rescue mill" if there is such a thing, but I am starting to suspect that many of these "rescues" are more profit oriented than animal oriented. Not that for profit is bad, just be honest about it. They take great care to ensure the best for the dog, and their methods and policies are excellent. You will have to do much more than show up at a pet store event and write a check, but the extra effort will be worth it. They have been fostered and well cared for by experts. Therefore the "match" will be good and no health surprises. The "donation" may be a little higher than other options, but your dog will be vaccinated, microchipped, spayed/neutered, and fully ready for a forever home. read more

The foster family we worked with were very accommodating and understanding of our unique situation (A young family, having lost our family dog of over a decade just 6 months prior.) We adopted a 9 week puppy two weeks ago. The adoption process was so easy. We were able to go down on a weekend and meet our puppy. Ozzie's is the best rescue group in the Bay Area. It is because of the people involved; the dedication & love they give to all the dogs they foster. I have never known more committed ladies who will go at the drop of a hat to get a found dog or rescue a shelter dog about to be put down. They take them whether they are pretty or not, young or old, sick or healthy, & they will nurse them back to health, no matter what the cost. I have met several of these women & am in awe of their care for these precious, unwanted dogs. We had an adoption about 3yrs. ago from Ozzie's that was not a "fit." Ozzie's worked with us & took the baby back, lovingly, & placed her in a home more suited for her. They were not unkind to us but understood not all dogs are suited for every family. I could tell she has lots of experience, knows everything there is to know about helping these puppies and has a huge heart. Lots of love going into these dogs! I adopted Eve about two weeks ago. Christy let me stay for two or three hours the first time I got to meet Eve and was very flexible with our meetings. This gave us both a good sense to see if Eve and I would be a good fit.
