It was the repeated dismissiveness, the condescension, even making an issue out of something as simple as asking for a "regular cone." The contrast was impossible not to notice. She knew nothing about me. My profession, my background, my life. None of it should matter. In that moment, I was simply another human being standing at the counter who deserved the same basic courtesy I had just watched others receive. As a person of color, I cannot tell you what was in her mind, but I can tell you how it felt to watch others treated one way and then experience something very different myself. We love to see it! The young man who greeted me was incredibly kind and helpful. I picked out a generously sized slice of red velvet cake and also noticed they still had some cupcakes available. I'd heard Sammy's can be pretty popular, so I was happy there were some left! Naturally, I grabbed those too and went with the red velvet and strawberry. I thought the pricing was very reasonable for what I received. If I remember correctly, everything came to around $25 and some change. The cupcakes came three to a pack, and the cake slice itself was a really nice size, so I felt like the value matched the quality and portions. Most importantly, the birthday surprise was a success! Everyone loved the cupcakes, and I was so happy with my decision to come here. Again, this is coming from someone who doesn't even have much of a sweet tooth, so the fact that ONE BITE of somebody else's cake was enough to send me looking for Sammy's should tell you everything you need to know. I ended up getting some work done while I was there, and the window seat became my favorite part of the visit. So, I guess no Taco Tuesday. My sister ordered a skinny spicy margarita, and I ordered a local IPA. The margarita was a little heavy on the mix, and my beer was tasty but not chilled enough. We placed our orders for food after about 10 or 15 minutes, because the bartender was a bit busy and didn't come back over. We didn't mind, because we were watching tennis. My sister ordered sweet potato fries to go, and I ordered a build your own burger. I customized my burger to have: chickpea patty, sautéed onions, bacon, avocado and Swiss cheese. We waited at least another 30 minutes, and nothing came. My sister asked for her check close to 1PM. At that point he brought out her food, which he stated he "stole" from the kitchen. So after waiting at least 30 minutes, her to-go order actually had not been prepared. At that point he mentioned to me that the kitchen informed him they didn't have any chickpea patties prepped and were making it fresh. My sister had to leave, and I continued to wait. At 1:10PM I decided I would cancel the order whenever the bartender showed back up, and he happened to walk around the corner with my food. I immediately requested a box and the bill. I received the ticket and was charged 1.00 per honey mustard which was never mentioned. I paid my bill, packed up my food, finished my beer and left. I got into my car, looked closely at the food and realized the bacon I paid 3.00 extra for was missing. I was over the entire experience, and decided I wasn't going back inside to wait longer for bacon. Disappointing experience overall.
