It was the repeated dismissiveness, the condescension, even making an issue out of something as simple as asking for a "regular cone." The contrast was impossible not to notice. She knew nothing about me. My profession, my background, my life. None of it should matter. In that moment, I was simply another human being standing at the counter who deserved the same basic courtesy I had just watched others receive. As a person of color, I cannot tell you what was in her mind, but I can tell you how it felt to watch others treated one way and then experience something very different myself.
