Technology Problem: Full hard drive, MacBook wouldn't turn on, Files were in danger Solution: Called FYX.IT for Data Recovery, Transfer, and Backup Result: One happy customer and a "like new" MacBook This is a delayed review but the reasons why will be revealed later. About a month and a half ago or so I was sitting at home putting in grades for a class I teach. A message on my MacBook popped up saying something along the lines of "HARD DISK: Please clear up your hard disk, it is almost full." At the time I've been getting that message for about three weeks. My MacBook has 500 GB on it so I figured I'd be okay. I use my MacBook for various tasks: homework, papers, grading, downloading movies, games, etc. and for the past year or so it would get really hot and the battery would die quick, something I again ignored because I figured its something that happened to all computers with time. Anyway, as I was putting in grades (a simple task that shouldn't cause a computer to overheat) my battery started to die fast and overheat, so I turned it off and put it to charge. Usually this fixes everything and my MacBook battery says, "5 hours remaining" which is great, but then I use it again for a simple task like browsing news sites and the battery then reads "2 hours remaining". (Why does my battery drain so quickly!?) The next morning I went to turn on my computer and after 30-45 seconds (its usual startup time) it turned off. It didn't even get to the home screen, it stayed gray and turned off. Confused I tried to turn it on again and the same thing happened. After 5 more attempts I panicked and started to Google potential answers to my problem via my iPhone. One post suggested I do something like press command 5 during startup to see what the error was. It was like "Error 50dd7", some jargon like that. I called multiple places asking for help. "Bring it in and we'll run a diagnostic." they all say said. "Awesome, it's free right?" I would respond (I'm very frugal). "No, the diagnostic will be (some said like $10 others said like $25)." "Wait, so how much will it be to fix?" "We can't tell you that until we know what's wrong with it." What the fuck? I have to pay you to tell me what more I have to pay you to fix it? I thought it was complete bullshit and kept searching. I requested help from my Facebook friends and one of them suggested FYX.IT. Completely desperate for immediate help I called them. The founder, Brendan Hsu, answered and asked me what my problem was. I told him that I got that error message (which I've been getting for weeks at the time) and told him that my MacBook wouldn't turn on. He told me he would personally come over and check it out, free of charge. HE CAME TO ME!!! FOR FREE?! Wow, that's service. When Brendan came by I showed him the computer. He did a few things and concluded that the computer would not turn on because the hard drive was full. I asked what should be done and he said I had two options. 1. He could delete everything and basically give me a clean slate or 2. He could backup everything on an external. Of course I went with option 2. Brendan asked if I had an external he could use to backup my files, I didn't. He said he could go get one for me and then backup my files. I said yes and then gave me a rough estimate of about $130 ($75 for the 1 TB external hard drive and $55 for the labor). I handed him my MacBook and my trust. The next day I got call from him telling me its just about ready and that all my files were going to be on my external. I asked if there was a way he could place all my important files (word documents, pictures, PDFs) back on the computer because I didn't want to spend time dragging stuff over (I'm lazy). He agreed and also did this. He came, dropped off my computer (good as new!) and I paid him with my card (he had this cool device that goes on an iPhone and allows one to swipe their card and be charged). It should go without saying that everything I had thought I lost (including my extensive history research I did this summer) was saved! I've never been more relieved in my life! And to top it off my computer ran faster and stopped overheating! The reason I waited so long to review FYX.IT was because I was waiting to see if my computer would drain its battery easily or overheat again like before, I thought these effects were temporary. But they are not! This MacBook runs just as fast as it did when I got it in 2011. I HIGHLY recommend FYX.IT to anyone with computer problems! Not only does this company have people who know how to work with Apple products (like Brendan), but they are also very friendly and fast! It is my first time I am writing a review, but feedbacks on eBay. I got back home and as soon as I was able to upload my computer, it is the first thing I am doing . I am as satisfied as it gets. no wonder their reviews are all great. their service def surpassed my expectation. 12/10. My macbook air couldn't come up from about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I called apple , they suggested some solutions but none worked. I talked to almost everyone in their department and we tried almost any possible solution which can be done at home. I did my own research as I am familiar with computer to some extent but to no avail. Nothing worked. I took it to apple store( their contractor in the mall in Champaign )to fix it, they checked the hardware and , all parts were functioning well.it was a simple plugging and less than 5 min at the desk. I didn't have much important data on it but I wanted some of my writings and personal informations so it would have not been a deal breaker if I had reset it to manufacture setting but I was trying to avoid , and save it for the last resort. The guy in the mall asked me to leave my computer there for at least 24 hours, even didn't check it to see if he can run it in a safe mode. Just told me we charge you flat rate just to look at it, even if there is nothing wrong with it and we carbon copy your data. Then for reseting it to factory setting we charge you another flat fee and if we need to do more work on it, we may even charge you more! I said wow, I can buy a used computer with that price! so I left and again tried and wanted to just boot it from another computer but it could have been a hassle as I needed to borrow an apple computer and use a fire wire which I didn't have. I just used my other computers meanwhile and I am happy that I did as I were just about to reset the whole thing. 2 days ago, my friend suggested this place and I had it in mind but I already had set my mind on reseting it, till last night when I was reading News Gazett I saw an ad for them and a link to their review page. The more I read the reviews, the more I became sure, more and more that I will take it there.the reviews all were great but very few which I could see the response were all courteous and suggesting some resolution. in my opinion, some of those reviewers expected more than they should but still the response were all about resolution and great customer service. Today I was sure that I would stop by there. called first, walked in and right away Chris, the gentleman who is taking care of apple items showed up. no waiting, no line! I asked him if it is ok with him that I sit next to him as he works on my computer and he agreed right away. He checked it fast, opened it, cleaned it, he didn't need to go the extra mile but he did. and he copied my data on the external drive. Honored my discount, and told me that he can install OS. but as I knew how to do it, I asked him that I will try it on my own and if I couldn't, I'll bring it back. The price they charged me was extremely reasonable, even cheap that I feel guilty right now of how little I paid for it. I love to local people start their own business and create jobs, do a great service, thrive and keep the money in town and make it a better place. They def have succeeded that goal and I hope their business grows bigger as they deserve it and are doing a great professional job. did I mention that my computer was done in about an hour? did I mention that I am typing on it now ? did I mention I created a yelp account just to write my first review ever? I'm so glad I found FYX. IT. I have used its phone repair services three times and have been very satisfied. Prices are way more reasonable than going to the Apple store or phone provider. Brendan, the owner, is very flexible and responsive. I don't know very much about technology; I just need a functioning phone. FYX.IT makes sure my phone is up and running quickly. My poor iPhone 4S survived for more than a year and a half before my screen broke recently. The screen was not just cracked--it was shattered. I had to get it fixed, even though I am just four months shy of an upgrade. I found FYX.IT and a few other companies online. Finding a repair company isn't something I've ever had to do before, so I chose FYX.IT because of the flexible hours and fast turnaround time. I need to have a functioning phone--I can't wait several days for a repair service. Brendan was very professional and prompt with communication and service. My phone broke on a Friday, and Brendan replaced the screen within an hour the following Saturday afternoon. His prices are incredibly fair, especially given his flexible schedule and immediate availability. The first replacement screen was defective and I thought I had broken the phone again, but Brendan was available to help immediately after I told him about the problem and replaced the screen with a new one free of charge. When my phone's screen went black after it was knocked off a table earlier this week, Brendan was responsive to my communication and set an appointment that was convenient for me. I was in and out with a fixed phone in less than twenty minutes on the same day. I won't waste money on a warranty plan when I upgrade to a new phone, because I know FYX.IT can fix any issues at a reasonable price. These guys are true professionals in their workmanship and customer service. I brought in a 27" iMac that I had "attempted" to upgrade the hard drive to a new SSD. This is not an insignificant upgrade for an IT layman, mostly because Apple chose to make their computers more difficult than Fort Knox to get into. In the process of removing the screen, I accidentally damaged the wire that powers the display. Not realizing that I damaged the wire upon remove, after installation of the drive and re-installation of the screen, the logic board was damaged when I attempted to power the computer back on. Fearing the worst, I stopped what I was doing and took the computer to FYXIT (first time customer). After a very smooth and efficient check-in, Jason and John took great care to diagnose and subsequently fix the problem. It turns out that a fuse shorted out when the damaged wire was reconnected to the logic board (completely my fault), and they were able to remove a fuse from an old iMac (salvage) and replace it successfully. Not only were they extremely proficient technologically (as you would hope from an IT shop), but they were extremely transparent and communicative throughout the process, not to mention their prices were extremely fair. I have found my new permanent IT shop in Champaign-Urbana, no need going elsewhere. Thanks again guys! read more

Excellent, fast service. My computer completely died (very unexpectedly) and there were files for my work I needed rescued off its hard drive as quickly as possible. (Always back up your data regularly! Lesson learned the hard way.) I dropped my computer off the same day it died and received an external hard drive with my rescued data within 24 hours. The price for doing so was very reasonable. When your computer dies, there's no better feeling than having all your data back in your hands in less than a day. They also did determine the cause of my computer's untimely death (a fried motherboard, which was what I thought had happened) and spent some time trying to find replacement parts, a gesture I really appreciated. I had expressed that given the computer's age I wasn't particularly interested in putting any money into repairs for it, but I was interested in finding out what the cost may be just in case it was lower than I anticipated. So, I was happily surprised when they did shop around a little bit to give me an estimated cost on the parts. I feel like most people wouldn't have spent the time to do so when it was really only satisfying my curiosity. FYXIT was awesome in repairing my macbook that wouldn't turn on. The first time I brought it they ran a diagnostic and took a thorough look at my computer and said all was good. Later that evening, the computer started shutting off again so I contacted them and they told me to bring it back. They were very friendly and they said it may be a battery issue and so they changed the battery for me. This is what the average repair store would do but fyxit went above and beyond by 1.assuring me that they would refund me the entire amount (including the price I paid the day before) if the problem wasn't solved. 2.taking off the amount I paid the day before to replace my battery. (they already charge less than what other places have charged me) Most of the places I've repaired anything never do this, even my friend said they would probably charge me the full amount for the extra services the next day because "thats how they do business." FYXIT is an exception :) They also got the job done the same day which was awesome. I've utilized the FYXIT team for both personal and organization repairs and have never been anything but impressed. I was the technology chair for 4-H House Cooperative Sorority for multiple years and the FYXIT crew completely redid our network setup, replaced our switch AND built the best custom computer I've ever seen. Brendan helped me find the lowest cost options that would be best for our members of the sorority and he and his team spent countless hours perfecting everything. When the issues first started with our old internet system I reached out to FYXIT to help. My problems became their problems - any hour of the day. If I needed something, they were always on site within a day at the most if not hours - regardless of the time or if it were a weekend or a day off. Brendan would always check in to see how everything was going and I couldn't believe how much of his free time was put into his work. Internet is so important on a college campus and I wouldn't have trusted anyone else with the technology in my house. I read a lot of good reviews about Fyxit and decided to try it after 4 bad experiences with A & K Mega Service. I called to see if they could fix my iPhone and about how long it would take. Brendan was so sweet and so nice. I told Brendan of my last 4 experiences within the last 2 months by going to A & K and how horrible their service was and he felt bad I had to go through that. He took $10 off my total to get my screen fixed as he felt bad and it only took him 20 minutes to fix my phone. He also told me of a glass screen protector that would protect my phone better than just a normal screen protector. He didn't have one in stock (as they will be in tomorrow) but he still gave me the discount for it since my phone was being serviced by them. I keep thinking how happy I was that I found this place and that it was so quick and so understanding on my problem. I will definitely take any device I have a problem with back to them. I would like to give them a 4.5 star rating because of a few shady things, but they got the job done well. So, I brought my LG G2 in for a screen replacement after I dropped it. They had to order the phone from a 3rd party and the overall cost for the screen and the labor was $140, which was a bit expensive, but it's cheaper than buying a completely new phone. However, after the screen was replaced, I had some issues with the proximity sensor thinking the phone screen was close to my face, so the screen would shut off during a call. When I brought the phone in for them to fix this issue, they spent quite a bit of time fixing it and were using YouTube videos and forums to solve the issue, which was a little disturbing. BUT, they fixed it eventually by scratching the screen to open it up a bit, and were very friendly about this second issue and offered to buy a new sensor and phone at the worst case scenario. So, while there were some difficulties, they worked it out and now my phone works fine. Also, they tend to be unresponsive if you email them. So, you should call. read more

This is my first online review ever, I believe. And I signed up for yelp just so I could give it. They have earned it. Me and the guys at FYXIT got off to a bad start and things escalated, mostly due to basic human communication mistakes on both sides. I got so frustrated I spent several days on Green St. in front of their store with a large white sign expressing my opinion. Today we tried again to resolve things and we were successful. I have to give a lot of credit to Andrew, the director of operations. It was clear he thinks carefully about how he and his staff interact with customers and actively seeks to improve those interactions. That is a rare thing in my experience. I don't have the training or experience to comment on their technical expertise. However, as someone with a lot of training in interpersonal dynamics (Ph.D, psychology), I can say Andrew is a young man you can be comfortable dealing with, even if things go sideways as they sometimes do. I had been fighting with Dell since April regarding defective new products, i.e. 2-1 laptop monitor and 4 docking stations. Not only would they not dispatch in-home technician (a service for which I paid), they would make phone appointments and never keep them. Consequently, I would block out 3-4 hours of my time expecting a phone call that never came. If I did talk with them, their technician support staff is impossible to understand. Not so with Fyxit....I would give them more than a 5 star rating if I could. They not only kept their appointment, but have highly qualified people and do not waste the customer's time. I appreciate their high level of competence and they fixed computer issues in a timely and responsive way and did not drag out the time in order to collect more $ for the service call. Highly worth it. As I have repeatedly told Dell....word of mouth is the best advertising!! Hire these guys...they know what they are doing and in today's world...that is a true testimony to their competence! read more

I completely shattered my iPhone 6 Plus screen a few days ago and went straight to Yelp to find a place near me that was reasonably priced and quick! I found all of that and more in FYXIT!! All of the reviews are super helpful but they don't even live up to the great customer service you get with them! I started a email conversation with one of their techs about what had happened and had a response in under an hour! They didn't have the type of screen in stock that I needed but they made sure to tell me that before I left my house, which is a little over forty five minutes away! If I went through Apple I would of had to pay $375 to have a replacement iPhone while my iPhone was gone for up to three weeks! No thanks! It only cost me $270 with FYXIT..which still sucked, considering I'm a poor college student. BUT, they had my iPhone looking brand spankin new in an hour and a half AND offered a student discount AND I got 50% off of a new glass screen protector on top of my new screen! So yay! Had a wonderful experience at Fyxit last week. I broke my phone month's ago and was too lazy to get it fixed... eventually the home button started to fall off, so I decided it was now or never. I went there at 9am (on the dot, because I was desperate), and they were; up, ready, and alert. Unlike some places that seem groggy first thing in the morning, the representative was upbeat and ready to help. I went home and showered/got ready while they worked on the phone (it takes an hour), when I got back the phone was done and ready to be used! You also get a warranty on the broken screen which is super cool - not if you break it or ruin it yourself... but more so if there are any malfunctions that may occur with their new screen... which is super cool on their end... let's you know they mean business if they care about customer satisfaction! Bonus: the shop is clean and smells super clean! As oppose to other phone places I've gone into that smell of pizza and dirty socks. read more

I cracked the screen on my iPhone 5c and it became unresponsive. I took it into Fyxit and was promptly greeted by the friendly technicians. After describing my phone troubles, I was given a great price and was told they could replace the screen in 20 minutes! I was directed to a cozy waiting area where I could see the technicians hard at work. As Brendan was working on my phone, he noticed that my home and volume buttons weren't functioning properly. He took the time to discuss the other issues in terms that I could understand and gave me a few options about fixing those as well as the cracked screen. He was able to bundle it all together so it would be affordable for me. I felt like I had a whole new phone after leaving Fyxit, but without spending a ton of money. Normally don't write reviews for anything, but these guys were amazing. A candle was knocked over onto my MacBook Pro. Hot wax went all over the keyboard and dried under the keys. It was seriously a disaster; none of the keys would work. I brought it into FYXIT, and fix it is exactly what they did. They took the entire computer apart, meticulously cleaned out the wax, and installed a new keyboard. They then ran diagnostics on the computer and found that the hard drive was failing. They called me and told me this, and asked if they could install a new hard drive for me. They managed to save all of my files and pictures in the process. I am truly amazed that they were even able to clean the wax out of the computer as there was a TON of it. It was a huge job, and they did it in under 24 hours. Not only was their service clearly incredible, but they were so nice to me. I am so glad that I went here. I highly recommend this place!!! read more

I needed a new battery for my obsolete (according to Apple) iPhone5. Apple said they did not have one. Best Buy said they could not get one. I called interstate Batteries and was told they did not carry iPhone batteries. I was ready to trade in my phone when I learned about Fyxit. I called and was treated very well. I set up a time to stop by when I was going to be in Champaign. I dropped my phone off, went to my appointment and returned about an hour and a half later. My phone was ready as promised and the cost was less than what others,who could not get the battery, said they charged. But the main point I would like to make is: the staff treated me better and were more friendly than any place I have done business with in all of my 75 years. Not an exaggeration- just a fact. a few weeks ago my hard drive failed, potentially losing vital information (recording sessions from the new album). Needless to say, I was freaking out. I back up my work usually weekly. (now i have a cloud service and back up every day) I want to offer my overwhelming appreciation for the innovative skills and above and beyond service that my friends Brendan Hsu and Adam Kouzmanoff provided for me at FYXIT. I can't express how grateful I am for their Macgyver-esque outside the box solution to restore and recover my data (recording session) that would have otherwise been lost forever. I've broken every single iPhone I have ever owned, so to say the least, I've had my fair share of phone repairs. From Southern to Northern California, to Champaign. I honestly must say FYXIT has been the most professional, friendly, honest, speedy shop I've had the pleasure of repairing my phone with. They're honest and they completely get it. They genuinely care about my experience. I'm sure we've all had the anxiety of not having our phone for a few hours. They're quote time was spot on and my anxiety really appreciates that.
