WORST HANDYMAN I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. Here's what happened... - I asked Gino to do 2 tasks: 1) install an additional shelf in my closet and 2) transform an empty/dead space in my cabinet into a usable cabinet. He said he could do both and would charge me $300 for both tasks - I didn't even negotiate with him as I thought that seemed like a fair price? - For the cabinet I asked Gino to transform the empty space into a cupboard that matches the rest of my cabinets. First off, he asked me to pick up all the wood, plywood, and handles from Home Depot (WHAT!? I have no experience in this!). That should have been my first warning sign, but he insisted I do it. Then, he did a half-ass job of constructing a cabinet that barely even matches the rest - it looks like a 2 year old did it. Lastly, and most infuriatingly, I noticed that he put the cabinet door on backwards - with the brown/rough edge exposed instead of the polished white side facing out!! When I texted Gino to alert him to his mistake, he replied "Paint it white" - how condescending! What an awful handyman to suggest I finish the job for him that he did incorrectly! Pictures of the cabinet and text attached. - For the closet, I currently have 1 shelf installed but want a 2nd above the 1st. Gino drilled 12 halls into the wall and THEN told me he was unable to complete the task because there was metal behind the wall. Seems strange because there's already 1 shelf successfully up, but fine - I understand if it's a safety concern and he doesn't want to complete the task. The part I'm furious about is that he left the 12 drilled holes in my wall that I now have to now patch, sand, and paint!! Picture attached. I told Gino he could not leave my wall like that - and he said he would return another day to fix it - and I requested it be within the next 2 weeks... - Bringing me to my next point, his unprofessional, condescending, and a**hole behavior. I followed up the morning Gino was supposed to return to the finish/fix the job and he replied "In hospital. Bad Reception. Flu and Other symptoms". Ooook ... I texted you, didn't call ... but fine, I'll assume you're telling the truth and so I told him to rest, feel better, and we could regroup the following week. Upon confirmation the following week Gino replied "Can't work for 2-3 weeks. I'm past 60, my body is breaking down. Some faster than others - not sure when I can get back there". So I replied "Sorry to hear you're body is breaking down, but that's not the deal we made ... I paid you $300 for an unfinished job that I expected you to complete within 2 weeks, so I would like you to come back tomorrow or give me an exact date you can return" ... to which he replied: "Listen here little girl. I went there to do a job. And my job did not include painting. You have champagne taste on a beer budget. I'm out. Enough said". WHAT......???? All of these texts are attached. This is unprofessional, rude, and UNREAL - I couldn't believe he had the audacity to say such awful things! - Gino is a conman: he does part of the job, at poor quality under expectations, demands money with the promise that he'll return to finish, and then plays sick or flat out denies to come back. - Gino told me that he used to live in LA and went bankrupt there ... and now I understand why. He'll probably go bankrupt here in DC as well. Moral of the story: DO NOT HIRE THIS MAN - HE IS HORRIFIC. *Gino: I will gladly revise this review if you choose to fix the problems you created at my house or refund my money for an unfinished job. We've had issues finding a handyman in the past - they've been unresponsive and did subpar work - so, I was a little dubious about hiring another one. However, as I lack all handyman skills, I didn't have much of a choice. Also, a good friend recommended Gino and his work. Enter Gino (who did so exactly on time): First, he went around the house to look at all the projects, including installing a light fixture that had collapsed, evaluating a leak in a shower, fixing a toilet, and plastering over a hole in some drywall. Then, he started working and quickly completed one project after another, leaving only those for which additional materials were needed. Next, he drove to home depot (with me, because it turned out we needed to pick a new shower head) and helped me identify all the materials we needed with amazing speed. We returned to my home and he quickly made short work of the remaining projects. He is now definitely our "go to" guy anytime we need to get something fixed. I bookmarked G&G in my Yelp app on my phone. I'll definitely be calling Gino in the future. Read on... I had my house painted and needed the wood wraps on 3 columns on my front porch replaced as the columns had some wood rot. I called Gino and he came out and gave me what I felt was a fair estimate for the work. As he tore away one of the existing column wraps, he discovered there was no support post behind the wrap which was a very serious structural issue neither one of us had anticipated. Gino told me he would put new posts in and it would cost 20% more which I thought was fair. He went and picked up the posts and cut and installed them. The 6x6 pressure treated posts were heavy and difficult to maneuver and require a large power saw to cut. He did it all and didn't complain a bit about the unanticipated work, which I think set him back about 3 hours. Needless to say, this type of construction is a also beyond a typical handyman job. He put on the new PVC wraps and we discussed how to trim the posts to match the existing trim on my house. In a nutshell, the new posts look great, Gino stuck with the job and resolved the underlying issue. The entire job took him a day and a half, and I think he only had anticipated the job to take a day originally. For anyone who's worked with contractors, you know how an unanticipated issue can throw a wrench into the job and the contractor's schedule. Gino stuck with this job which I'm extremely grateful. What impressive customer service! I reached out Gino to ask if he would be available to assess my closet shelf that's starting to separate from the wall (I was concerned that it was installed improperly after discovering the week before that another closet's shelves had to be fixed). He was available to stop by to provide an estimate within 48 hrs. Upon review, Gino advised that the shelf was installed correctly, that the gapping was from just normal home use over the years, and only some calk I could do myself would be needed to cover the small gap between the shelf and the wall. He didn't charge for his consult, which was about an hour of his time (driving to and from and 15 mins for his assessment). Gino took care of a slew of long-term nagging problems at our house and did a great job. This included stabilizing an outdoor stair case, fixing a screen door, cleaning and resealing a deck, replacing a light fixture, some caulking, and even repairing custom windows. Took about two days total and all the work was done well and at a very reasonable price. Gino was also great about communicating throughout the work what he was doing and what was needed. We also had a plumbing problem, and I really appreciated that Gino realized that while he might be able to do it, it was also a unique problem and that he might also make it worse, so we ended up getting a plumber instead. He even called me later that night to see if the plumber got the job done because he wanted to make sure the house was ok! Wow. So this was a nightmarish, miserable experience all around, which I'm willing to explain in painful, long-winded detail. In short, though: Gino is something like a con man who will spend most of his time trying to convince you his work is great when it's actually very sloppy and lazy. Stay away unless you just enjoy going to war with a handyman who, in fairness, tries -- but simply doesn't understand what good is, or why someone's word is important. My experience was cry-till-you-laugh bad, and how he has bamboozled people into thinking he's good is, in actuality, his greatest skill. That's all. No? You'd like to know more? Based on Yelp reviews, my wife and I hired Gino to handle about a dozen tasks around our house, ranging from medium to very small. Our top three priorities were the installation of a stairwell railing, the mounting of a garage door opener, and stopping a ceiling leak in our sun room. Lesser projects included making adjustments to our front and back doors, sealing a french drain panel in the backyard, putting in a pantry door latch, making it so a light chain switch stopped sticking, and so on. He began by sending me to Home Depot for materials, which I agreed to because I hoped it would save some time. I wasn't thrilled about this, though, because I told him I was working from home that day and needed to get on various conference calls. Didn't I hire *him* to handle all this? I returned home to find him sitting in his truck, talking on the phone -- he took a lot of phone breaks throughout the day -- but then he got to work. I noticed that morning that he didn't bring many tools with him; in fact, he had to borrow my power sander and electric saw (neither of which he bothered to put back after he used them). Yada, yada, yada ... Hours passed. He stopped often to talk with me, about sports, about my neighborhood, about whatever. He disappeared for an hour, unannounced, and retuned with weather stripping I had casually mentioned in an earlier conversation but made clear was not something I really wanted done that day. While I was on a conference call at one point, he ran my electric saw, frightening the people I was on the phone with. He later got mad because I was on the phone so much. He never touched the garage door opener, did a very strange and sloppy job on the staircase rail (splotched stain, a really rough finish, and you should see the joint he attempted), and the ceiling still leaks. So much for my three highest priorities. Oh! And he didn't bother cleaning the garbage and wall shavings he produced throughout my house, left a big pile of sawdust on my back patio, and tossed two scrap pieces of wood NEXT to the outdoor garbage cans instead of inside them. I don't understand stuff like that. I basically paid Gino $520 or so to fix my front door and install the pantry latch. Otherwise, the backdoor still doesn't latch correctly, and the upstairs light switch still sticks. Where he installed weather stripping on the front door, the door doesn't close properly and must be slammed to be locked. As he was leaving, I told him I was pretty disappointed with the stairway railing, and he replied that he stands by his work and would return to make any corrections if I was unhappy. I emailed Gino early the following week for him to return and further work on the railing, and he responded that he wouldn't be available to come by for several weeks. I found this unacceptable, especially considering I paid him so much for pretty sloppy work, but he refused to budge. I called him, and he tried to convince me the stair rail looked fine, and I told him that, Gino, it most definitely does not look fine. He said he was too busy to come fix it, and when I told him the ceiling still leaked, he became defensive. He did a lot of shouting and talking over me, insisting that the work was done at a high level. As for the leaking roof, he said he did the best he could and that my roof was just old and that he wasn't capable of fixing it. There was no mention of the roof's age when he was here that day. So I asked for a partial refund, and he offered to send me $125. I thought this was fair, since he did spend his entire day at my home but that I would have to hire someone else to fix these things. I asked him when I could expect it, and he said I would "get it when you get it." Almost two weeks passed before a check arrived, along with a note that said he changed his mind. The check was for $75. This is just wrong, kind of Gino in a nutshell, and after I threatened legal action to recover the entire amount I initially paid him, he sent the remaining $50. He's just a shyster, that's all. As another reviewer put it, he talks a good game. I don't doubt that he is capable of putting together some Ikea furniture or painting a wall, but he simply can't do bigger projects. He's not an engineer. He's not a carpenter. We've been working with Gino on a number of house projects over the last few months, and he's been outstanding to deal with. Always responsive, he's very clear about how the project will go, when he'll be done and cleaning up after the project is finished. I would be very weary of this guy. He talks a godo game, but not dependable and edges on insulting. He was quick to say he could do everything we were looking to have done when I spoke to him on the phone: re-caulking a tile shower floor and re-setting and grouting several loose tiles. When he arrived he claimed he didn't want to reset the loose tiles because "it would create too much dust"...really?? When we agreed to have him caulk our shower floor he told us 3 weeks was the soonest. He never showed and when we called he gave some excuse about losing his phone with our contact information. The worst part is he said the earliest he could fit us in on a Saturday (our originally planned day)...another three weeks out. When we asked about a Wed/Thurs possibility he ad the nerve to tell us he would have to charge time and a half... obviously the insulting part. Answered the phone without identifying the company, thought I dialed the wrong number. Extremely rude over the phone. Repeatedly cut me off before I could describe the job. I've had Gino do a couple of jobs for me - the first was mending a fence, which he did a great job in giving me several options about the most cost effective way to do it, and he also did the same with a garage door that my husband and I needed fixed. Gino also did a complete renovation of a bathroom for us and he did a great job. He was very upfront about costs and if anything unexpected came up, he notified us immediately. Gino did repair work on my front door. Not only was he incredibly communicative in setting up the appointment, but he also checked in as promised the night before the appointment. After reading these reviews, I decided to chime in on Gino's behalf, because I've had him do plenty of "Handy Work" http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/handyman around my homes (mine and rentals) with great success. It also might be prudent to keep in mind, that most people experience a level of disappointment, (or aggravation), in direct proportion to their level of commitment. After reading the couple of bad reviews, I have gleaned that these writings may have been from people who were looking for something more skilled than just handy work, and too cheap to pay a professional contractor, like a roofer, plumber or electrician, as well as finishing tradesmen who do trim framing, and rail installs. That level of aggravation from a review is derived from a need for a professional, but too cheap to pay for one, and is in direct proportion to the lengthy bad review in an attempt to deflect from a fraudulent level of expectation with the price they wanted to pay. Furthermore, a shyster would not have returned the $75, much less the other $50 upon threat of some illegit legal action. I'm assuming he may have put this person in their place, based on the obvious contradictions in the writing. There's a grey area of skilled vs. handy home repair that Gino is proud to attempt in order to make a customer happy, but these are not in the usual bucket of handyman kind of work. He does know some great contractors who are specialists in those larger jobs, and he is quite willing to refer those professionals to anyone. Basically, he's willing to replace a few tiles, but he's not going to tile an entire bathroom or shower; he'll fix some rotten exterior/ interior trim, but not re-trim the entire home. Get it? What I've learned from getting to know Gino over the past couple of years, is that he has a good dose of confidence, likes to communicate and most of all, make sure the customer is happy. His defensive posture, for someone bringing up a nefarious review, is directly proportionate to his commitment for doing a good job. He can be a bit rough around the edges, and he might respond in kind, unlike most of us who have experience in office politics; but if you're patient and calm so will he be. It's also my opinion that he has so many good reviews, that one can't rely on just one or two bad one's to tip the scale; a coin has two sides. I met him a couple years ago, and have associated with him at Bible church, so honesty and integrity are not a question in my mind; feel free to give him your key. His business is completely reliant on customer satisfaction, trust and repeat business; and with the advent of technology, come "competent" reviews. I might add, if you're not available to answer questions for him, on how "picky" you want something to look, and choose to be busy or unavailable on carpentry work and such, then don't expect it to be "your" perfect finish from one who is competent in a variety of small skills or inventive with maintenance work or repair. He is mostly scheduled two weeks out, so be patient if you can, he's most likely worth it. He wants to do as many jobs in one day as he can finish, but has a two hour minimum (which makes sense), so find some extra things for him to do. He doesn't waste time while working, he's generally fast and efficient; never the less, his phone does ring quite a bit due to his positive reviews, but he does try to keep it short, and yes, he might talk about sports if you're so inclined. Your good rapport with him will be rewarded as you keep calling him for more work to be done. As I've come to know him, I have found that he is sensitive to his customer's expense, and he will do some extra work from time to time, especially if you're a repeat client. If you're petty or cheap AND OR picky over the materials you want, then yes, drive to Home Depot or Lowe's and get your own. He's not there to make your choices in color, style or design. I make sure to have all my materials in my home ready to go, with a clear understanding of what I want, and some means to reach me. Gino is a "matter of fact" kind of guy, a hard worker who doesn't mince words; so get over the need to be handled by silk gloves; he's not there to coddle you. Gino worked on a new and rather complicated shed that I was just plain tired of putting together, so I had him tackle it (even though It's not in his tool box) and I had him finish off my screened in porch; installing the door, tightening the screens and hanging a fan. He's also well experienced in the basic "Handyman" stuff like sinks, disposals, leaking toilets, faucet replacements, drywall work, painting, mounting TVs etc... He might be a good handyman (I will never know) but if you're looking for professionalism and honesty, you will have to keep looking. Called this guy and explained I had some new doors to install and described exactly what I needed backing it with texting him actual photos of the 3 doors he would be dealing with. In his own words, he called that "easy task" and stated that it wouldn't take more than 30 minutes of his time to cut and install one door but said the minimum billing was 2 hours labor at a $85/h rate, which I was ok with. We set up the date and agreed on the deal. For some reason, out of nowhere I receive a text message the evening prior to the due date talking nonsense about the "job needing 4-6 hours" now to be completed!!! I was like WTF is this stand up comedian??? I did not even entertain the conversation, just told him that the deal was off and I did not have time for this type of joke. I am very happy I did not have this guy in my house but in the same time, I am pissed for the 3 days of me time he wasted while I could have contracted someone else's services. He told me to text him to confirm an appointment and both times i texted him to set it up he asked me "who is this?" I explained both times who i was and he never seemed to be sure if he could confirm because he said he was too busy. I finally asked him if i could call him and he said that he could not perform the service previously promised. I told him i was upset because i waited several weeks based on our prior conversation and he didnt seem to care. I contacted Gino due to his overall Yelp rating, and asked if he could help me with a DIY project. After our initial call, I sent him pictures of all the materials I had already purchased & the link to the project idea I had found off of Pintrest. He responded via text, & seemed confident that he could tackle the project. He quoted me 3 hours to get the job done. Sounded good. I was about to book an appointment with him, when I read the review Kent B wrote on 7/8/15. Since this was a recent negative review, I became concerned. I wanted to be comfortable with letting a complete stranger into my home & feel like I was hiring the right man for the job. I called Gino again & asked him if he had done a similar project before, & asked if he had the right tools (hand sander, wood cutter, and a drill). I explained I had read the review on Yelp, and was just trying to do my due diligence. He got really defensive. I told him I didn't need to know what had happened with another customer, I just wanted the reassurance that he could get the job done. Gino replaced our kitchen garbage disposal about nine month ago. He was responsive. It was easy to schedule an appointments and he was on time. It didn't take him a long time to replace the disposal, considering that he had to go and buy an additional part. We live in an older property and our kitchen has not been upgraded in years and at times it is not easy to install and match things. I noticed a tiny leak about a week later, Gino came back after my first call and fixed it, free of charge. He said to follow up with him anytime if anything goes wrong.
