They are quick and accurate. I had a dress modified for my maternity photos. They did a great job and cared for my dress well. The only negative is that they didn't give me an accurate quote for the alterations. When I went to pay I found out that the alterations would cost almost as much as the dress. Took a suit here to be altered after losing some weight. They were very helpful and the turnover time was quick. Three days. I thought the price was a little steep which was about $85 with taxes. When I returned to pick up the suit I couldn't see any noticeable flaws done with the alteration. I'd come back but will probably shop around a bit more for a better price. However if you want it done right regardless of the cost than this is your place. They are not open on the weekends however which makes it a little inconvenient if you work Mon-Fri. read more

Sometimes in life, money isn't everything. This is true of G & L Tailor. I've had much cheaper alterations, but I go here because I know the quality will be fantastic, the staff is great, and I know it will be a quick turnaround. As a self-proclaimed Queen of Procrastination, the latter matters to me most. I recently got a multi-layered tool bridesmaid dress hemmed and it was done in three business day. I also enjoy how spacious this establishment is. One tailor in town is crowded, covered from floor to ceiling in sewing supplies and clothes, basically a hoarder's dream. Extremely disappointed with the services I received. I had my wedding dress altered at G&L. Being that the cost for alterations was $150 I expected above average alterations. I am appalled that G&L did not iron the dress prior to making the appropriate alterations. Now, the bottom of the dress is uneven and looks like an earthquake fault line. I wish my words could express the frustration and dissatisfaction I feel right now. I will never refer someone to G&L nor will I return there again. I called and asked if they would give a discount if I brought in a lot of items. The guy that answered the phone said that he would give me a 10-15 percent discount if I brought in 10 pairs of jeans. When I got there, the guy was on the phone and he stuck his hand up at me. I didn't like that, but then the manager came out. When I told her what I was told over the phone, she said she would not do that. She said she is the manager and that she would not honor anything he said. Took in daughters wedding dress to be altered. The dress fit beautifully however it was too long and it needed to shortened as the wedding would be on the beach so she would not be wearing shoes. We made an appointment, my daughter put on the dress, seamstress came out to look at the dress. She kept telling my daughter to put her shoes on, finally after about the 6th time telling her it was on a beach and she would not be wearing shoes, she understood. Finally she looked at the bottom of the dress and stated there was absolutely no way the dress could be altered. Not only could she not alter it, it could just NOT be done. Absolutely devastated we left. While trying to find a hoop skirt or some alternative for my daughter, we ended up at Ladies and Gents who not only said "no problem" to the alteration, were able to have it done in 3 days!! Well, they're quick, their work is good, and the guy who works there is very nice. No real complaints, here! I just had 7 items mended, and was happy with all of them. When I dropped the clothes off, there was a very grouchy woman there giving my curious (but not remotely rambunctious) children the stink-eye, so I was a little wary. I dropped my dress off a Tuesday and picked it up Friday by noon! It was ready in time for my Saturday event. I just got a hem on the bottom, but it was quick for her to pin me up during measuring, and picking up was so easy, it's clean, not over crowded and very respectful. They charged only half of what the bridal shop was asking to alter it (the bridal shop was not in Bakersfield) and they were able to finish it in one week, while the bridal shop wanted a month. I just went to get my dress hemmed and I can tell it's going to come out perfect! The guy at the front desk was super friendly and so was the woman who was pinning my dress. I'm not a fan the dressing room. There's no mirror in there, and instead of having a door to your room, it's a curtain that doesn't completely surround your space to make sure no one is peeking. I mean, I know these people wouldn't peek or anything, but it just still made me uncomfortable. I do think the pricing is a little high, ($60 to hem a single-layered mermaid gown), but I can tell it's certainly going to be worth it. read more

This is the first time that I have to search for an alteration shop for my daughter's dress. I have to use Google and then Yelp for the reviews. I called the place and spoke to the shop part owner named Randy and I was accommodated at the day and time I wanted to. There we met Mary Anne and fitted my daughter's dress for the hemline adjustment. She recommended also to adjust the top because the neckline hangs kinda low. She not only looked at the hemline but at the whole look which I really appreciated. Before I forget my fellow Yelpers, if you need or want to take the extra fabric that was cut off or will be cut off from your dress that they will be working on, please let them know in advance because they usually throw the excess fabric in the trash and you don't want Randy to dig for it. I had a very different experience that the other posters on here. I felt the staff was extremely dismissive and rude.I The job I asked to be done was a zipper replacement on a jacket. First I was told it was going to cost $30. I said ok let's do it. Then I was told they couldn't do it because their work wouldn't be perfect. I asked if they could do a "good enough" job for me because the stitching would be invisible underneath the jacket hood. They said that it was their priority to provide customer satisfaction so they wouldn't help me. HUH? Then they brushed me of and refused to answer my questions so I would understand what was going on. It was 9:00 in the morning and there was no other customer in the store. I told me they were too busy to help me. So I left feeling insulted and very displeased. So much for customer satisfaction. I don't know if it was a culturally embedded sexist schema that made them behave that way or if my small job was beneath them. I took my jacket to another tailor and was told it was not problem to do the repair and I was very pleased with the work. Recently I took a pair of blue jeans in for hem alteration. After collecting them a week later and upon getting home, I noticed the stitching was done in white and not yellow as usual. White made it very noticeable and I didn't like the look. I returned them the following day and asked him to kindly change the stitching as I prefer yellow. He suddenly became extremely angry, very defensive and agitated. I asked him why he was so angry? To try to appease him, and calm him down some, I offered to give him half the cost of hemming to complete the task. He said "no, it will be done but don't come back again, I don't want any more trouble". Unbelievable!! I was completely horrified at his loud abusive behavior towards me, and over such a minor thing. I will ask my husband to collect the jeans from his premises, as there is no way I will endure him again. I have used G & L several times over the years and always previously found them to give a good professional tailoring service and pleasant to deal with. They were very helpful with a cocktail dress which needed quality tailoring. This is the first time I have ever written a review. I needed to shorten my bride and bridesmaid sweat suits and when I picked up the clothes, I thought they were not done because the hem lines were identical to the originals. To sum it up - BAD. For more info read on. After having my bridesmaid's dress pinned I was baffled to hear the price of the hem was barely under $90. When she saw my confusion she said that it had four layers. I reminded her that two layers were to be hemmed and two were just to be cut since they were tulle. She told me it would take her hours. I should have known at that point that she wasn't painting a positive picture and should have taken my bridesmaid's dress elsewhere. But unfortunately, I waited too long and was on my lunch break. My husband picked up my dress two days later, and when I got home that evening I looked at the work that was done to find a hefty amount of blood on the dress. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. Accidents happen but it was easy to see that there was no effort to get it out. Oh, and when I called to speak to someone about it, their response couldn't have shown me more that they did not care. No apology, no nothing. I will never go back to G & L and I will never recommend them. I recommend Sew-N-Go on Columbus and Blush Bridal on Oak for alterations. Unfortunately, Sew-N-Go was closed the Tuesday after Memorial Day and Blush Bridal had a rush fee. Little did I know that even with the rush fee it would have been $25 cheaper at Blush (that info came from another bridesmaid in the group with a last minute hem). OK, valid rant complete. read more
