My only experiences with G Cafe have been purchases from their stall at the Wooster Square Farmers Market but I can say the various breads and pastries I've purchased have been very good (almond pastry especially). They have a good selection of harder to find breads (Vollkornbrot being one). Prices are on the high side, but the quality is equally high. read more

I started this review by reading some of the others here. I agree with many that rate its coffee drinks highly. I've had their cappuccinos and lattes several times since they opened, had a few sandwiches and pastries and found them consistently good if on the expensive side. Being a neighbor living right here next to Pitkin Plaza, I've sat here for hours, enjoyed the ambience and the large windows looking out on all kinds of people activity and the changing four seasons. It's a cool place, and the consistently large crowds attest to that. I also immediately spotted the review by Eli G., complaining about the spottiness of the wifi network and demanding that G Cafe rectify the situation, saying that it's not acceptable for a cafe today to not offer reliable wifi. I half agree with that viewpoint, and it's both halves of mine that motivated me to sit here and tap this review out on my phone while enjoying my cortado today. I agree with Eli that reliable wifi is a selling point for lots of cafes today, and that inconsistency is annoying to say the least. It can make cafes lose customers, and this inconsistency point has kept me away from G Cafe on more than one occasion. Wifi is advertised, and it has been there at times, but just as often, in my experience, it has not. Totally understandable once or twice, forgivable more times if you know the reason, and really annoying otherwise. I actually disagree with Eli G. on the idea that all cafes need to have wifi. I pretty much wrote a dissertation over several years at cafes in the Bay Area, and for that wifi was essential. But I always liked and respected, and still do, cafes that want to create their own vibe, encourage different kinds of atmospheres and social interactions. Computer users can be buzz-killing drones who sit for hours without as much as acknowledging others' existence while not exactly contributing to the cafes' coffers either (is a small coffee or tea enough to justify taking a table and heat, using water and electricity, and demanding speedy wifi on top of that? As painful as it still is for me to acknowledge, as a frequent computer-user myself...no, it's not.). That's why it's more painful than it could be to give this place just three stars. I just had the most bizarre encounter with a staff member, who after ringing me up without a word for my drink, responded to my question about the wifi password by saying, "There's no wifi." This ensued a difficult back-and-forth in which it sounded like he was denying there was ever even wifi available for customers, and he seemed annoyed with me for asking to boot. It's fine if you don't have wifi. Just let us know what the policy/state of affairs is, and we can make our decisions accordingly (and not ask 'annoying' questions about wifi passcodes either). But, please, just be consistent. Put up a sign. Take "free wifi" off your Yelp listing. And focus on greeting people, talking with them, and creating a positive atmosphere. read more

The whole experience was awful. First of all, the girl working there, Leilani, was insanely rude. Shouted at the party in front if they were ready to order, they ended up leaving. She then shouted at my party if we were ready to order and I said we were looking at the pastries. There was no one else in line so there was no rush to order. When we were finally ready to order she stood by the espresso machine drinking her coffee looking at us and ignoring us while we were standing at the register waiting to order. She finally decided to come over after just sitting there sipping her coffee. She had an insanely rude attitude when taking our order and giving us a dirty stare the entire time. When our coffee finally arrived, it was awful. The hot chocolate tasted like tap water with a whisper of chocolate. The mocha tasted the same but burnt. We took two sips and threw it out. A gem in New Haven, but I'm also particularly biased because it's one of the only places I've been able to find that can satisfy my avocado toast craving out here in New Haven (albeit for more than $8). It has a clean, rustic interior that I find so very cute AND the cafe reminds me of California. It's a great place to study since they have free wifi (they do have soft music playing so if you like absolute silence, go to a library or something). A neighborhood gem! I live across the street, and this airy cafe is my favorite way to start my day. The smell of fresh-baked bread is heavenly. The coffee is excellent (and they have almond milk!). The Pragle (pretzel bagel) and lox sandwich makes a great brunch, but on busy days I opt for a slice of warm fig and walnut toast. It's easy to grab on the run, and comes with deliciously rich butter and jam. And if nothing else, I'd be sold by the free bread samples alone :) read more

Incredibly inconsistent service. The first three times I have been here, the cashier was incredibly sweet and accommodating of my preferences. The food was good, drinks were good, and pastries were good. In general, a great place to study. But the last two visits were god awful. I don't know what happened! It was the exact same cashier that served me before in a super kind manner. Except these two times, he was unnecessarily sassy and rude when I asked him questions about their pastries, the drink+pastry afternoon deal, or the changed closing times (apparently they were closed at noon, but people were still in the cafe eating and working??? Of course I got confused.). For example, in the past this cashier let me substitute some things so I assumed it was okay for me to ask for it again. Lovely little spot! Tucked away a few blocks from The Green, the G Cafe Bakery is a quieter and sunnier alternative to other cafes in the area. It is located next to an open, airy courtyard with ample outdoor seating, and the inside has large windows so you can pretend you're outside even if you opt to stay indoors. The coffee is absolutely delicious and their pastries are to die for. Their sandwiches looks pretty good too, although I've only had a tartine. Friendly and helpful staff are just the cherry on top. The only negative is if you're looking for a place to study, music can be on the louder side here. I also don't recall seeing any hot chocolate on the menu, which would pair so incredibly well with any of their pastries. Other than that this is the perfect little cafe! G Cafe has so much potential, but on 8/30 they most certainly dropped the ball on taste, quality control and customer service. As a first time customer I approached their counter planning to order a half soup half sandwich combo $11, the soup of the day was not marked on their board so I asked the associate behind the counter what the soup was, both employees thought it was something different, and once telling me it was tomato soup I requested half of a sandwich that was in the case. The sand which options that were part of the 1/2 soup 1/2 sand which deal were also not written on the board, so she handed me a menu. After paying the $18.14, I was handed a table marker and found a seat at the counter closest to the entrance. The food was ready within 2 minutes of paying, and my number was called, so I brought the marker up with me and grabbed my food. At first glass the food looked great. A fresh large cup of fruit, tomato soup and a tuna salad sandwich. I started with the soup which was unbelievably sweet. I never imagined soup as a dessert but this could have easily satisfied anyone's sweet tooth. When I tried the sandwich I could only taste he arugula. The bread had a welcomed crunchy texture but held zero flavor. Unfortunately it seemed like the tuna salad sandwich was previously made as the bread under the tuna salad was a bit soggy. The tuna salad itself was ok. Then I opened the fruit cup and noticed moldy fruit right on top. The reason I am giving this place 1 star is because many of the things I mentioned could have been prevented with follow up, training, quality control, and maintaining food safety standards. The only customer service I received was "hello", a followup on the soup available, and being handed a menu. There also seems to be no reason for the table markers as they will not leave the counter an simply call out your number. Please note that none of my pictures include the interior or exterior view. G Cafe has done a nice job with the facility and design, offering plenty of seating indoors and outdoors on a patio right outside of the cafe. It is however in my opinion that most people don't go to a cafe to spend $18.14 admiring the aesthetics of the facility while eating moldy fruit, and a subpar soup and sandwich combo. read more

The service... omg, there was one person standing at a table in back staring at the wall for 45min (I watched him do NOTHING?!??) , there were two young gentlemen up front taking orders and it was like a comedy routone, the long haired kid spills a full jug of milk on floor, he starts mopping it up with a towel and his hands ( you are touching the floor, then food?? WTF!?!? ) then he disappeared in back. I visited G cafe the very first week it opened several years back. My assessment then was that the bread was delicious and the service was terrible -- incredibly slow and borderline incompetent. Unfortunately, when I went back just last week, my first assessment is still accurate. First, their pretzel bagel is amazing. I would cross state lines for that bagel. Their other pastries are also delicious, and I regularly stopped there to pick up bread for special occasions when I still lived in New Haven. Their food gets 4.5 stars, but their service gets 2 stars on a good day. Waiting in line always takes forever, even if there is just one or two people in it. Once you order, it always takes 10 minutes for your food to appear. Ten minutes is a long time for toasting a delicious pretzel bagel and putting on some cream cheese. The people behind the counter always seem frantic and confused. I overheard a long conversation between the two women working about whether or not they had skim milk, and then whether they could make whole milk skim by adding water to it. Seriously. read more

Okayyyy so here's the deal. I came towards the end of the day, around 3:15...the kitchen was closed and all they had were flatbreads, pastries, and coffee. I got an earl gray tea latte and an almond croissant. I enjoyed the tea latte but was unamused by the low low key staleness of the almond croissant. In no way is this G Cafe's fault--c'est la vie-- pastries + time + air= stale. I'm sure if I came in the morning it would have been more pleasing to my taste buds. I actually came on to say something specifically to the staff about the chicken salad sandwich I ordered-- and let me be clear that I will absolutely return to G Cafe and also that I think the person who made it was new: YOU HAVE TO USE MAYONNAISE IN CHICKEN SALAD. It doesn't have to be a lot, but the sandwhich that was sent to me was literally dry pieces of chicken mixed with celery, packed into a scoop, and put on my sandwich. It was literally the worst chicken sandwich I have ever had, I think because there was no mayonnaise in the chicken salad. Look, I get it: mayonnaise is probably overused. So grateful to live in walking distance from this place. I'm obsessed with their coffee! So tasty and fresh. I love all their breakfast options. I hade the avocado toast, needed a little salt but other then that was very good. The products taste really fresh and you're never weighed down by their food. So many options and most of them quite healthy. The bread is clearly the show stopper here, super fresh and delicious. My favorite employee is Hanna! There were 3 other people waiting to pick up their orders. Instead of being acknowledged and letting me know "we'll be right with you" nothing was said to me. I tried to order the brie tartine on their housemade bread, only to be told that the kitchen was closed. They were, however, still offering some of their food options, including soup. Breakfast sandwich deposited on the counter with a cry of "number 9" - since my order was 1-122, it took two call-outs and a bell until I realized it was mine. Passed this place dozens of times, finally gave this place a try. Was I ecstatic that I did! I had a croissant and a Colombian dark roast. Croissant was flaky on the outside and warm and buttery on the inside. The coffee hit just right. The decor was cozy and modern/retro. My wife even bought a liaf to go. She says the quality of the food reminds her of back home in Germany. We will repeat offend. read more
