This is my go-to spot whenever I have a craving for shrimp crackers or Shin Ramyun. They've even offered to stock my preferred items (e.g. my favorite brand of rice). But I think the number one reason why I really enjoyed this sandwich was because of the bread. I've been here twice already as I live at The Harrison and have had a great experience each time! The first time I got the Chicken Salad sandwich which was delicious and super fresh and the next time I got some bananas, and they threw in an extra one for free. I've been coming to this market for years now, never got the time to property review it - but today they showed their true colors and I felt I had to leave this review. During a time when everyone is panic buying and certain markets are price gauging, Gabby's managed to maintain a well stocked market and not price gauge. They continued to be the convenient, reliable market we've grown to love, even when they could have taken advantage of their customers. They even incorporated a 1 toilet paper per customer rule, to make sure no one was left behind. This is the best convenience store ever. They literally have EVERYTHING. The family that owns this store is so kind and always helps you find what you need. I am so glad this store is here, it is so convenient. I don't ever need to go to CVS or target because they carry all the necessities here. I walked into this store looking for something I could buy so I could get some precious quarters. I ordered 2 lotto tickets since that seemed easy. I gave the cashier the money asking for quarters back as change and told him that I needed it for parking. He mentioned that he did not have quarters and when he saw the look of disappointment on my face, he smiled and said "don't worry about" and said I did not have to buy the tickets since he knew I was buying it just for the change. It's a pretty convenient place to pick up your usual essentials (sans produce). The people that work here are all part of the same small family, and they are all wicked sweet. Get to know them as people (and not just human transaction processors), and you'll find them to be very interesting and friendly. The prepared food they offer is limited, so don't go in expecting to find "high-end" toast or BBQ chicken. But what they do make they make well. They make a decent grinder and chicken salad is the bomb. While I agree the prices are not exactly what you'd find by going to Safeway, they are very reasonable. And you're not going to Safeway, you're going here because it's close and *convenient*, like a convenience store should be. The one thing that would convince me to give this five stars is to not nickel and dime on transaction fees for credit cards. read more

This place saved me when I had a tummy ache, couldn't go far, Rincon Market was closed but needed a lemon, paper towels, and grated parmesan cheese. It's a mom-and-pop shop, or so it seems. The girl opened the door for me when I entered. She also rang me up. The father helped me find each item I needed fast. And i think the son opened the door for me as I left, which was sweet. Agree with Eileen L that it's nice to support the American Dream. It's tempting for us to shop at Target and Costco to save but when everyone does that, people like this family don't get to run their own thing, build skills, etc...they instead need to work for the big companies that're stealing their business. I do plan to get coffee here sometime now that I've heard it's good. I also agree with Joe M that it's expensive. My lemon was 50 cents, a roll of towels was $3 and the kraft grated parmesan cheese was $3. In a pinch, it's worth it. I came in with a 2 & a half month old newborn in my left arm and some milk strapped to my bag for a baby who's crying out her lungs. I saw this deli at the corner and thought maybe I would be able to buy something and ask the owner if I could have some free hot water. The older lady there who I thought was the mom, immediately, IMMEDIATELY gives me a dirty look for coming in... like if I was this "problem" that occupies their space. So I buy a bottle of water and the daughter was initially nice, directs me to seating outside or inside. Its super windy, so I decide to stay inside. There are two empty chairs by the corner of this "seating area" (looks like a project undrr renovation, tools, shelf am sawdust all over) and only one customer- who was at the counter buying beer having an argument between the mom and the customer for presenting a fake Mexican ID for alcohol. I begin to warm up my milk and the daughter changes her entire demeanor, telling me that I can only warm up my milk and I cant sit down or othwerwise pay a "sitting fee". She told me I can either do it inside or outside. I was so taken aback by the behavior and the disrespect, I could not even utter a proper comeback. Last I checked, I was respectful, paid money for an item, and didnt even create a nuisance in your deserted store. Plenty of characters around... I really really dont think I was one of them. Definitely not a threat to your business operations. I am sure the mom has so much control over the daughter's own thinking, she forgot what it was to be a little bit more compassionate about a person trying to feed a baby. Word of advice, business is about building relationships and community outreach. You have neither one. read more

My dog is unsure about what to think of this place because every time we walk past it, there are interesting people sitting out front who stare at him. It makes him feel judged. After walking in to Gabby Cafe today, I'm also unsure about what to think. I stopped by on my way back from work today in hopes of getting a gyro ($5.50) and a piroshki ($2.75). I kept reading reviews about great service, and since it's less than 4 blocks away from my apartment, I decided to finally give it a shot. Upon walking in, no one greeted me. It looked like there was one guy at the counter, making someone's order. I saw a beverage menu (coffee, teas, etc.) and then rows of random groceries like bread, cookies, crackers, toilet paper, wine, frozen pizza, etc. Basically it's a convenience store for the surrounding buildings in SOMA. Very convenient, if you ask me. I walked around to the side to look at their menu, and I think I literally stood there for 5 minutes without anyone telling me that they'd be with me in a minute, or that I had to order on the other side, or anything. Maybe I was just too short to be seen over the deli counter? No, the guy did look at me but acted like I was invisible. I ended up walking out because I was hungry and didn't want to wait if no one was going to even acknowledge that I was there. It's not like it was crowded; there was only one other guy around the other side where the drinks menu was, and another woman was sitting at the window on her laptop. The family is always there working hard to make their business work, and are very friendly, courteous, and remember the locals and regular customers. Nick K., I am sorry that you have some strange expectation that a local convenience store is going to compete with a conglomerate like Safeway for the price of a bottle of wine. This convenience store/deli is exactly that - all for convenience. And this family works as hard as anyone in this city to make their business successful. Also nice to talk Giants baseball with Sam and family, as they are big sports fans that follow the local teams. Hopefully the "HATERS" like Nick K. will continue to stay away so a hard working family can continue to have a successful business that serves the neighborhood well. I have given this place several chances as I live close by. And I really want to like this place because it is close by and usually pretty well stocked. Hence the two stars. However, the service is just terrible. And I refuse to patronize a business that is not at all appreciative of your business. So I will walk several blocks to the other markets in the area even though this one is closer. I would hope for at least a greeting or a thank you upon checking out. Even when I say thank you sometimes to the cashier, they say nothing. There is only one guy there that is cordial and says thank you but I always seem to get someone else at the register. Not cool. So if you are in a pinch, yes they are well stocked. But I would think twice about who you're giving your money too. Don't expect to be appreciated for your business. But if it were me, even if I was in a pinch, I would get in my car and drive somewhere else because of the bad customer service experiences I have had here. read more

Overcharged for 2 sodas. Cost =.99 each for 1.98 total and I get charged $2.50 - the only way for this to happen is if I was charged 25% sales tax which is apparently what did happen. I didn't realize this until I did the math later but couldn't go back because they "conveniently" didn't give me a receipt for proof. Moral = don't let them rip you off! read more

Great for convenient healthy food and it's so close to my condo I can't help but come down for the occasional junk food snack. The customer service is excellent and I like that they'll order things for me like gluten free food. They also have a good selection of wines, especially for a small store. This is a family owned convenience store plus Middle Eastern cuisine cross. I come here almost every other day to get my chicken breast sandwiches and occasionally a case of red bull (I work in the financial district about two blocks away from this store). I don't know how many times I've craved home cooked food or comfort food when my day goes bad but this place always takes care of my needs. The parents remember exactly what I want in my sandwich (I'm Indian not Middle Eastern) and the kids are very friendly and courteous. I'd visit again and also point others to this place if they are in need of a good chicken breast sandwich on a roll with everything and no mayo/just mustard. For the price, theirs is better than a 5 star restaurant (and yes I've eaten at one). Keep it up guys, don't ever get rid of the chicken breast. :) read more

There are still 2-3 tables and outside sitting, but not a place where you would want to hangout with friends or spend your Sunday afternoons. Edited and updated to reflect new ownership on 3-22-07 So it's been a year since my original review and I'm revising what I wrote because Gabby Cafe has undergone new ownership. The new owner Sam is so much nicer and pleasant to talk to than the previous owner and his girlfriend. Sam is courteous, quick, and responsive to my needs and requests. There is one major difference between Sam and the previous owner who IMHO had no clue about customer service or relationship building, Sam is happy and genuinely happy to see me and any other customer. Gabby Cafe has all the essentials that one may need, cookies, candy, soda, beer, wine, ice, great soy lattes, sandwiches, and newspapers. Of course he stocks other things but these are the items I'm generally picking up when I'm in the store. I originally gave Gabby Cafe one star but since Sam's taken over they now get 4. A major improvement from a year ago and a welcome change to the neighborhood. ***Original posting from 3/2007*** I can't complain, they're right downstairs from where I live and reasonably priced. I usually grab a toasted bagel with cream cheese and a latte/mocha before making the drive down to the Peninsula. I don't really buy anything else from them except for the occasional newspaper. If you live in the area, this little corner store will save you a lot of trips to the grocery store. I've been here a few times to pick up some household cleaning supplies and a few things for the kitchen (olive oil, vinegar, ranch, etc.), and they haven't completely raped me on the price like I would have expected. For the past four months, I have lived beside the Gabby Cafe and frequented it often. (Twice a week maybe? We tend to run out of milk a lot and have to run here for it). It is a small, family run business, and they take the time to greet me every time I shop and thank me for supporting their business. Frankly, I don't care that they aren't that excited to see me when I walk in. The point is, this part of town is no man's land after 5 pm during the week and all weekend. Gabby Cafe is it's saving grace. The sandwiches are great (I'm from NY, so I know a good deli when I see one). Quality meat, cheese and toppings. They don't skimp when they make your sandwich either, so you are full and not in that mostly-bread-Subway kind of way. Also, they have a good wine selection and beers by the 6-pack. The other random groceries are mostly things you might have forgotten on your last trip to Safeway.
