The Friday All You Can Eat lake perch was delicious. Great service, great selection of sides and didn't even ask for more perch as what they provided with the initial serving was plenty. This was a Home Run pick, a very nice, old school diner feel, counter seating included, with Huge Placemat/Menu that included Roast Turkey and Dressing, A Classic Club, a Reuben on Marbled Rye, Beef Liver & Grilled Onions, Huge Omelets and several salads offered! I chose the Liver and Onions adding a side salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette. The choice was not easy with the Roast Turkey, A Cuban Sandwich and the Reuben pulling at me as well. Believe me, there was Zero Regret in my choice, it was easily the best plate of Liver and Onions I have ever experienced, very tasty, tender and an extremely large portion. I gather with former coworkers here, it is the PERFECT place to sit, chat, drink coffee and have a DELICIOUS meal. I've been here twice and each time I left wishing it was closer to where I live. The staff is QUICK to seat you, they are welcoming, accomodating and FAST! I had the Mexican Fritatta - it was PERFECTION. The never ending coffee refills came quick and often. Really enjoyed this restaurant that sits near the railroad tracks in downtown Glenwood, Illinois. I had never been there before. I went with some lady church members for breakfast and really enjoyed it. The restaurant offers nice portion sizes. Always friendly and observant staff and servers, actually treat you like family after a few visits and they get to know you. Gabe's menu is comprehensive and very much above other Diner restaurants in the area. The food is much better in that the taste is really that of "home cooking" as opposed to restaurant food. Also the menu has many items (if you like them) such as Bologna and eggs or sandwiches (I've not seen that elsewhere,) Liver and Onions, Cuban Sandwich, Potato Pancakes, Friday Night all-you can eat Fish Fry, (including Shrimp and a good variety of fish, not just Cod or Lake Trout, ) etc., just to name a very few, and special Sunday Menu Specials to go. The amounts of food, compared to others, and the prices are amazing. Always feeling satisfied when leaving, based on excellent, fresh food quality - and price. I ordered an omelette which was good, my friend ordered a burger and soup. Burger was good, soup was not hot served hot. Wait Service was good. When I walked in with my service dog the cashier whom I believe was an owner, gave me a look and after I told her he was a service dog she said, "I don't know" and shook her head. She was busy checking patrons out and didn't say anything else. I felt like we weren't welcome. The water plastic glass smelled like bleach. Could have used a good rinse after the sanitized cycle. This is a very nice breakfast place out in Glenwood right by the railroad tracks. They also serve lunches, but we always seem drawn here for breakfast. They offer all the usuals and do them very well, and service is top drawer. This is an old-fashioned kind of place that we are glad still exists. The tomato cabbage soup was very good and was included with the dinner, as was the mashed potato and gravy and fresh green beans! My friend had the warm turkey dinner, and it was equally as large as mine! Loaded with real roasted turkey, mash potato and gravy,cranberry sauce. She chose the complimentary salad. I ordered the catfish fried and grits. I received two catfish fillets and a big bowl of grits with all the butter you wanted. This place baked it's own bread and makes it own Italian sausage. Order the Italian sausage because it's spicy and juicy and enough to share inside your grits(old school eating :) Anna the waitress was so nice with her inviting personality. Don't snooze on this place get up and go to breakfast here and you be disappointed. The ambiance is reminiscent of eating at grandmas with the old time relics on the selves and plants. Love Gabe's place. My mom and I are Sunday regulars..actually I think this is the only day of the week I've ever been. Anyways, we go on Sunday's after church for the cream of chicken rice soup. The food is good, the service is pretty good, and the greeting staff is very friendly. I typically only get breakfast, but years ago I used to get the grilled cheese and fries which was my staple meal and still a favorite.
