Gables Bagels is a small restaurant that packs a lot of good things in it. When you walk in you're immediately greeted by the employees. They are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. You can tell they are used to a fast pace because they almost move seamlessly in making orders. We ordered 3 bagels. We got an everything bagel with jalapeno bacon cheddar cream cheese, a classic lox, and the big Bob. They were all fantastic. The bagels are slightly crunchy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. My husband said the Big Bob is a sandwich he could eat every morning. The classic lox was everything you want it to be. We both enjoyed the spice level of the jalapeno bacon cheddar cream cheese. Great spot for bagels and glad it's somewhat local to us. read more

Gables Bagels has the best bagels in town (and probably in all of Indiana). This was my first time having Lox and my expectations will forever be raised. I got the Classic Lox with The Works and it was a tasty, though messy experience.. They are quite heavy handed with the cream cheese "schmears" so I would order it on the side if this is a big deal to you. The salt bagel is superior in my opinion. The BLT with Chipotle Aoli on salt bagel is my FAVORITE sandwich here. Definitely look into the add-ons, there are some unique and tasty sauces/spreads that can enhance your bagel experience. There are only two tables inside the building (they are always filled) and it can get quite loud in the tight space. In warmer weather, they have some outdoor seating. This establishment is more of a grab and go sort of Cafe place. read more

The restaurant itself has pretty limited seating in the winter (three tables), though there is some standing room. In the summer they have a few more tables outside. They have a large variety of options for your bagel. I have only had their everything bagel with egg and cheddar and jalapeño cream cheese, sometimes with a vegan sausage patty. The bagels are best if you let them sit in the wrappings for a few minutes; it softens them up. If you are looking for a New York style bagel--like the ones you get at your local bodega--this is the closest you're going to find in Bloomington by far. Is it still exactly like those ones you'd get? No, but it's good enough until you can get back to the city. read more

I am something of a breakfast sandwich connoisseur, and this bagel sandwich blew me away. First off, the bagels are perfect. Sometimes when you get a bagel sandwich, the bagel itself if too chewy or too hard to make a satisfying bite, but not here!! The bagel is perfectly soft and chewy. Absolutely love the option to add a latke to your bacon egg and cheese. And a thin smear of chive cream cheese is a free and tasty addition to your sandwich! Perfection! Just look at the cheese pull in the picture! The store is cozy and small, and be prepared to wait. You order at one spot at the counter and then pay at the end. They have tons of options, including gluten free bagels. There are a couple tables inside and outside if you're lucky enough to snag one on the weekends! It was pretty good! A bit pricey for "bagels" but it's also not just bagels. Their brisket was phenomenal! This location is def a college crowd, us oldies stood out lol. However, we had some great conversation with a few students standing in line too. Seemed to be a good group of kids! Well go back next time we're in the area. Coming back because I realize I never left an updated review. I've come back to Gables multiple times since my first review. Each visit has surpassed the last :) The one that sticks out in my mind most is when there was a huge power outage in the area and there weren't many restaurants or grocery stores that had power. Gables DID and was poppin! The staff didn't seem the least bit overwhelmed. It would have been really easy for them to be rushed because emotions were high for everyone but they put everyone at ease by moving quickly, but still making everyone feel important. The owner was there and he kept the mood light! The food was delicious and really changed the tone for our day. Definitely stop in! read more

The line moved quickly on a Saturday morning game day. My brother and I both ordered breakfast sandwiches and enjoyed being able to choose from a wide selection of bagels and schmears. The sesame bagel and chive schmear went very well together. The team was friendly and efficient, and there were a lot of regulars that were thanked for returning. Possibly more of a 3*, but I'm reviewing relative to expectations. Let's begin with a puzzle. How is it that the dozen bagels were quite hot when I picked them up, but when I opened the bag hours later, they were pre-sliced? Let's also consider that, unlike at any other bagel store I've been to, there's a discount for buying them frozen, and there are no baskets of bagels that they're grabbing from. The answer I'm guessing (and which some other comments here suggest) is that all of the bagels are premade and delivered to the store frozen, and then they're heated on purchase. Which would certainly be a unique business model compared to any other bagel place I know, to say the least. And while there are some bagels that I've found to improve with freezing and toasting, these do not belong to that category. The flavor is closer to bread than to a bagel, missing a certain yeastiness/savoriness. The texture is also far too soft, and even toasting didn't really help. It's honestly closer to a grocery store bagel than to a proper NYC bagel. Clearly they have good reviews, so I'm in the minority with my opinion. I could imagine that their business model works very well for goyim who buy one single bagel, premade into a sandwich, and that their sandwiches might honestly be very good. But for those of us who grew up eating bagels by the dozen, this place is really just not it. It's the most disappointed I've been in my Yom Kippur break fast meal in quite some time. read more

So mediocre. Bagels aren't right. Prices are high. Cole slaw too roughly chopped and not sweet enough. Black and white cookie felt and looked promising, but was just crumbly dough (should be moist, and while we're at it, should not be $3.99) with the taste of sugar (black tasted same as white). Even the dill pickle was mediocre. The cashier was at least nice and they had cold Diet Coke in cans, so I'll give them that. I stumbled across this gem of a bagel shop by sheer chance and I am sure glad that I did. This place is located in a small strip mall. There is an ample amount of parking spots available that are shared between the business co-located in the strip mall. The shop has a decent sized dining area and there is also outdoor patio seating available as well. It is very clean and tidy and you will hear music playing out on the patio. As you would have probably guessed, this place primarily serves various bagels. They also have muffins, parfaits, chips, fruit cups, pickles, cole slaw, potatoes pancakes, and overnight oats. When picking your bagel, first you choose what type of sandwich you want and second you choose, and most importantly you choose what type of bagel you want your sandwich on. I decided to go with the bacon, egg and cheese bagel. Next I had to decided between the likes of a rainbow bagel, cinnamon bagel, blueberry bagel, plain bagel, poppy bagel, asiago bagel, grain bagel, and salt bagel. I went with bacon, egg and cheese on a salt bagel. My sandwich was ready in less than 5 minutes and it was delicious. One of the best that I have ever had. They also have a limited selection of hot and cold coffee, juice, and other assorted drinks. This is not a coffee shop, so they do not carry your signature lattes. Just you basic java. I got one of their pre-bottled caramel coffees to go with my sandwich. It was not as sweet as I am use to but I still enjoyed it. Now, as I mentioned, the sandwich was amazing. However, as amazing as it was, the staff there was just as amazing, if not even more so. They were very friendly, courteous and helpful. Some of the best that I have experienced. I met the owner, Ed, while I was there and after a few seconds of meeting him, I saw where the staff got their awesomeness from. He spoke to every customer there and was very personable. This place is one of those that I wish I could give more than five stars. My food and experience were both first-class. I highly recommend checking this place out. I wish there was one closer to me and will definitely be back soon. read more

[Out-of-Towner Review] A must on every trip to IU! I'm a bagel babe, for sure! They are one of my favorite breakfast choices. I always try to find local bagel spots when I travel for work. Ever since I found Gables, I've stopped going anywhere else. I get the same thing that made me really enjoy this place - BEC on everything. I love that their BEC comes with chive cream cheese! Their bacon is perfection! I haven't branched out, but that is because this order is that good. I'd be open to trying others, but each time I get my trusty order, like usual. There is always a line, but I wait in it every time because it's that good! The owner is a loud and friendly dude. The times he's there, his BIG personality always makes me laugh and smile. The have a great system in place, it's always awkward when you wait for your order. Essentially, you have to stand where people line-up, so it gets a little confusing. They have a few tables in side and some outdoor seating, should the weather permit. Ample parking, even if their neighbor (Italian shop) is a little unhinged if you park in front of his store - a story for another time! A great New York bagel in the middle of Indiana. Got there pretty early around 8:15 AM and the place was already buzzing. I kept my order simple and got a classic bagel with lox, it was ready before I paid. It has the feel of a New York deli but there is limited seating. So if you want to eat there you might have some difficulty. I got a coffee to go with my bagel because the sun rises in the East and the coffee was fine, could have been a bit hotter. The bagel though was doughy but not too much and the cream cheese kind of stole the show. Just the right amount and great creaminess to it. If you need a quick breakfast don't miss out on Gables Bagels. Absolutely the best bagels in town. They also have wonderful cream cheese flavors (my favorite is the bacon habanero flavor). The staff and owner are all SUPER friendly! Why not a 5-star then? They won't toast your bagels. They say that it is because the bagels don't need it - they are fresh from the oven. But I come here every Friday for a bagel and at least half the time, my bagel is cold and starting to get a little tough. A nice toasting would fix that. But no, they won't do it. Very sad!! I want to love this place...I do...but I've given it two tries. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Ordered a sesame bagel, toasted, with chive cream cheese. First confusing part: they don't toast bagels...okay that's fine because the bagels are coming out from the oven. I get my bagel. I can only describe it as stale, as in hard to bite stale. Second confusing part: the chive cream cheese is almost sweet? At this point I gave up and stole a bite of my boyfriend's bagel sandwich. Bacon egg and cheese bagel was fine! Better than my bagel. I ordered a sesame bagel with maple bacon habanero cream cheese. I specifically asked that the bagel note be sliced, but I was told that they come sliced and I didn't have an option. Another way of saying they don't make them at the restaurant. Regardless I think if you're a bagel restaurant you should let the customers decide if they want it sliced or not. The schmear had an okay flavor, but there were chunks of bacon fat that I didn't anticipate, but in hindsight maybe should have. All in all, it was an average bagel, that hit the spot, but I probably won't be going back. read more

We tried out Gable's for the first time today ! I love how easy it is to get in and out of the parking lot - a rare commodity in Bloomington. I was super excited to try a rainbow bagel and it didn't disappoint. I got the cinnamon raisin schmear and you could definitely tell that it's house made.
