I needed some hydration with a little kick, so I stopped by Nashville General Store & Bakery for an iced tea. It turned out, they had to make my iced tea special, because they weren't allowed to use the tap water because of some boil order that was established in the area. OK! They were able to pivot and make me my unsweetened ice tea with bottled water, instead. My iced tea was great and just what I wanted. What customer service! I wish I wanted some baked goods while I was here, because this place has all of the homemade-looking baked goods. Peanut butter cookies in a Tupperware container, bread pudding covered in plastic wrap, apple pie in a metal pie dish. All of the baked goods look like they were made by someone's grandma. And they looked like they were labeled by someone's grandpa, carefully, in grandpa handwriting. Nashville General Store has a breakfast and lunch menu along with baked goods, with a big indoor dining room that you can sit in and enjoy your meal. Breakfast foods include pancakes, quiche and breakfast sandwiches; lunch options include things like sandwiches, soups, salads and sides. This place is also a store. You will find things like jams and canned goods, home decor, and lots more stuff with a country aesthetic. It's a cute place to visit to grab something to eat or drink, and look around. read more

We stopped in for lunch and ordered the breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches, a Hoosier delicacy. The meat is locally sourced and sliced. The breading is a house recipe and is crunchy like an onion ring. Delicious! Each tenderloin is breaded and cooked to order and served on a house baked cornmeal bun. The sweet potato fries are served with a spicy jam for dipping. I wasn't sure but it's delicious! There is a shopping area with seasonal decorations and house seasonings and sauces. Mostly stuff you'll find all over Nashville. The dining area features mix n match furniture with a country kitchen vibe. You order at the counter and the food is brought out to your table. We spent $45 for lunch for two but it sure seemed worth it. read more

We stopped by for lunch. The store is cute inside made of several old buildings attached together. They carry locally prepared pickled products, jams, candles and candy. They are known best for their baked goods. Ordering food took a while as they were training new staff. You order and pay at the counter then go find a seat in the dining room. There is a 4% up charge for credit cards. I was glad I had cash. The dining room is an adorable blend of old furniture. Local folk art hangs on the wall. We were the only ones in the dining room on a Monday. The food came out quickly. The staff is friendly. I ordered a pork tenderloin made with locally grown pork. The breading is light and crispy on the soft freshly made roll. The pork is generously topped with fresh romain and tomato. The ham and bean soup is hearty and hot but could use some seasoning other than salt. The soup is served with a huge fresh corn muffin. The muffin is the winner. I found it odd that they do not open until 10 am since they serve breakfast, pastries and coffee. There are no public restrooms available. Parking is a bear on weekends. read more

The staff is friendly, helpful, and welcoming. We were greeted with a smile. The old General Store theme is artfully done with all sorts of items of interest. We first stopped in just to look around, but spotted the Everything pie with chocolate, pecans, coconut, graham cracker crust, and several other indulgences that was just exceptionally tasty! We decided to come back the next day for breakfast and what a treat! The Fried chicken with biscuits and gravy, eggs and bacon was delicious! The chicken was crispy to the last bite, and along with the nicely seasoned gravy was the star of the plate. The breakfast sandwich with sausage, egg and cheese was one you couldn't put down. Great General Store with lots to offer: food, baked goods, antiques, holiday home decor, jams, jellies, & more. There is cute outdoor seating next to a small creek. Public restrooms just around the corner from the General Store. Parking, like anywhere in Nashville, is difficult. But we were lucky enough to be driving down the road as someone was pulling out a parking spot in front of the store. We walked around inside, looked at everything there was to look at, bought some peach cobbler, & bought some chocolate chip cookies. Unfortunately neither were great - the peach cobbler was mostly dough (no cinnamon & hardly any peach slices). The store was cute & had great wooden Halloween decor pieces. Menu prices here seem a little higher as a long-established business compared to others but still reasonable. The N end (left side) is house decor such as wall hangings, napkins, place mats, rugs, runners, candles, etc. The middle section is baked goods. Some are pre-packaged like syrup, jam, bread. But they also have a bakery for fresh baked goods such as apple butter with fried biscuits, cinnamon rolls, pie, etc. They also have coffee and cappuccino. The S end (right side) has table and chairs to sit down and eat what you've ordered. I ordered a butter cream cinnamon roll and mocha cappuccino. While the butter cream tasted great, the cinnamon roll was very dry. And the cappuccino tasted more like hot chocolate. I would not order either one again. read more

The main reason for the 3 star review was for the disorganized way that they were dealing with the large amount of customers. We stopped in on a busy Saturday afternoon. There was a long line but we decided to wait. I enjoyed the fact that the area where you waited in line was surrounded by shelves that had items for sale. We bought bacon aioli and honey mustard. For snacks we tried a variety of things between our group of 7. Our favorites were the root beer floats and the brownies. The float was quite large and it had a great ice cream to root beer ratio. They didn't seem to have an organized way to record or serve the orders which resulted in multiple mistakes and customers having to ask for items they ordered. Amazing food, great staff; this is our favorite place in Nashville to eat! 1st day's lunch - wife: chicken salad sandwich served open-faced on pumpkin bread; me: Angus beef patty on sourdough. We shared a fry and a lemonade. Thoughts: The chicken salad on pumpkin bread is AMAZING! I don't typically like veggie breads, but this stuff is heaven with a bit of real butter on it. The chicken salad is great too; bits of walnuts and half-grapes make it the best chicken salad this kid has ever tasted. My burger was really good too. 2nd day's lunch - wife: chicken salad on croissant; me : "Hannah's Hoagie", which is a nice sized roast beef with cheese on a hoagie roll and bistro sauce on the side. Again, we shared a fry and a lemonade. Thoughts: The wife and I agreed that there's something huge missing when you don't get the chicken salad with the pumpkin bread, but it was still good. The hoagie was AWESOME! Real, slow roasted roast beef in big slabs (not Arby's styled shavings) with Swiss cheese on a toasted roll. The bistro sauce was warm, and seemed to be made with some kind of cheese and a light horseradish. Whatever it actually was, it was so good that the wife, who hates horseradish, was munching it on her fries instead of ketchup. Seriously though, this place oozes all of the fun Brown County and rural Indiana vibes - from the Cracker Barrel-like store and outdoor picnic bench tables to the fresh baked pumpkin bread and fresh orders of fried biscuits with apple butter. It appears that they are known for their chicken salad (served with the moist and delicious pumpkin bread) and meatloaf sandwiches. I would throw the ham and beans and cornbread into that mix. Picture old antique chairs, cheesy quote signs, candles, soap, handwoven rugs, etc. as far as the store goes. On the baked goods front, they offer made in house pies like sugar cream, several cobblers and breads (note that the pumpkin bread boasts cranberries and walnuts). The staff is friendly and you can't beat the prices - my ham and beans meal was only $7. Parking can easily be found on the neighboring side streets for free or up the block in a paid lot. If you're looking for the quintessential southern Indiana/Brown County experience, look no further. read more

My husband and I needed a late lunch after our morning hike, and we were happy to stumble into the general store. They have a nice selection of sandwiches and baked goods. I had the chicken salad on house baked bread with potato salad and he had a blt with chips. They also have hot items, like a tenderloin and burger. When my sandwich came out, the bread was still warm from the oven The chicken salad was pretty standard, but the red potato salad was very good. My husband's BLT was incredible (I mean, bacon, am I right?). We sat outside on the picnic tables, but there is indoor seating as well. Grabbed a cookie sandwich on the way out. Despite having a less than optimal location, this store has a little bit of everything you might be looking for. There are baked goods (lots of fruit breads sold by the loaf), kitchen accessories and sauces, home goods, rustic country rugs and cotton goods, and a small restaurant. Although the address is for Washington Street on the south end of town, the only way there from the street is down a small walkway/alley that leads behind the row of shops to this place. It is just east of the public restrooms on the south end of town and by a paid parking lot. But if you like finding local goods and some country style home items, this is a good place to stop. The staff was friendly and patient with customers. The place is made up of several adjoining spaces with so much to see, it is hard to take it all in on a single visit. I got the ham and bean soup with cornbread for lunch. It was pretty decent. The serving size was nice. The ham and bean souped tasted a little bit like it had vinegar in it, which was a bit odd to me. I liked it but didn't love it. The cornbread was a muffin size and had a good flavor but was a bit dry. It was less buttery than I prefer but had a nice honey taste instead. read more

Normally I am scared of places that are covered in knick knacks and I generally try to avoid them, but this little store is one of the most unique old school general stores I have been in. We had just stuffed our faces at another spot that was less than stellar so we were disappointed when we stumbled on this pace and learned that they are known for DEEP FRIED BISCUITS AND CINNAMON ROLLS Sayyyy wwahhhhhhat? If I were you I would park your car by this place at the beginning of your journey and eat here. They have a really cute little country dining room, and then 3-4 rooms divided by theme. One room is textiles, another is candle/decor, and the last one is all delicious cooking stuff: soup mixes, seasonings, cake decorating stuff. This place actually has stuff that I would buy and use not just junk like some other stores in this category. We were on a long weekend in Indiana, and I had Nashville General Store bookmarked, so we decided to detour over there on our way to French Lick for breakfast. The drive there was relaxing, meandering along wooded roads with many, many old, rustic cabins scattered about. I could easily imagine having one of those cozy cabins as a vacation or retirement home. We were surprised when we rolled in to Nashville, having known nothing about the town, that there were so many shops and were taken aback a bit, in a good way. We found our way to the general store and headed in to the counter to order, and were also pleased that there was no line ahead of us during prime breakfast time on a Sunday. We both ordered a half order of biscuits and gravy with a side of sausage, and one side of bacon to share. The meats are from a nearby town's butcher. We also decided we'd better try an order of the fried biscuits, which we learned was ten biscuits. We paid and headed back to the quaint dining room where we had our choice of a few tables. About 20 minutes later, our hot food was delivered. The half order of biscuits and gravy was heavily doused with a hearty sausage gravy, and the sausage patty alongside was generous. The bacon was hearty as well and tasted home made, not overly smoky. The cinnamon sugared fried biscuits were warm and served with a thick, dark apple butter. Tasty, but if I came back again, I would stick with the hearty biscuits and gravy and a sausage patty, as those were the star of the show for me. Everyone we encountered who was working in the store was very friendly, and it was a nice, relaxing stop perfect for a weekend getaway. read more

Pardon my language, but HOLY F*CKING HELL!!! What I am about to describe is an injustice. My words, as descriptive as they are going to try to be are not worthy of this exquisite creation. I feel as if I need to put this lone item on a parallel status of orthodox believers not calling out the name of God. For God (and this delectable sweet treat) are too mighty, too good, too amazing for our senses to be able to handle. This could be the greatest thing material, tangible thing I have ever encountered. Hyperbole? Hardly! Blasphemy? Maybe- but that is only for God herself to judge. For this heaven sent treat is truly above me and I am no match for the power that is... Deep. Fried. Biscuits. Rolled. In. Sugar. And. Cinnamon. Truly, this is the perfect example of words not able to describe how good this is, nor the emotions that were conjured up. My heart aches to not be able to share with the rest of the world just how I felt in that very brief moment when I practically inhaled five of these wondrous creations... Or maybe that heart ache is the early signs of a heart condition. Either way, I digress... For anyone that follows my reviews (hello to all three of you), they will know that I planned on having three children named "Dark Half," "Mild Sauce," and "Hard Fried," after my obsession over Harold's Fried Chicken, and the only way I know how to order my favorite deep fried thing in the world. Make that my second favorite deep fried thing in the world. And it isn't even a close second now. Uncle Harold ain't got shit on these messenger-from-God ladies who fry to order each batch of biscuits for your devouring pleasure. This place has cornered the market on all low country desserts that are deliciously bad for you- and have come up with the ultimate thing to satisfy MY sweet tooth. On top of this awe inspiring creation- they offer an assortment of breads, baked goods, pies, cobblers, sandwiches and other things to satisfy any hunger you have. Plus, it is all in a setting that while very typical for the area (picture one converted storefront building after another hawking the same array of antiques and country crafts for counties upon end)- the actual rooms are quiet and cool on a hot summer day, and make the experience a fitting one. After all, it is not every day that the divine grace of God shines upon the heathens of Chicago to come up with an idea as great as deep fried biscuits that are perfectly light and airy, while still buttery and gooey and encased in a "healthy" (see- thick, rich, and oh so delicious) coating of crystal sugar and cinnamon. This my friends, at least for me and my ever expanding waist line, is a good thing. For it is the gifts of God that need to be shared amongst humanity and taken in absolute moderation. Which is why I will try to limit the five hour drive down to Nashville, Indiana to no more than once per month in order to imbibe in God's tasty little balls. Yes- I did just say that. read more
