Everyone was telling me to get a volant at The Olde Bartley House. For those who don't know, a volant is the specialty sweet here: It's a laminated (layered) donut, similar to a cronut. They offer them in several flavors, but apparently, the one to get is the Abe Martin Apple, which is stuffed with apple pie filling and topped with streusel. You don't have to tell me more than once to order a donut. In fact, I'm probably already eating a donut as you're recommending a donut, because I love donuts so much! This donut (volant) was great, but I feel like it's a whole other beast. It's more like a pastry than a donut. A delicious pastry, though -- don't get it twisted. And so unique! I think if you visit Brown County, you need to make your way to The Olde Bartley House to try a volant. The Olde Bartley House is also a coffee shop, so it has coffee in all its permutations. I opted not for a coffee drink, but for a Moonshiner: a sparkling energy drink. I chose the Tangerine Dream, which tasted like a melted orange creamsicle! I was hoping that it would wake me up, because I was seriously dragging, and it really did give me a little pep in my step. When I visited, there were plenty of tables at which to sit, and the space was calm and relaxing. I saw a couple of people working at laptops. I hung out in the dining room for a bit, enjoying the music they were playing over the speakers while I ate my volant and drank my melted orange creamsicle-like energy drink. We were pleasantly surprised to find this GEM hidden in a cute touristy town in southern Indiana! I ordered a caffeine free iced tea (Elderberry Hibiscus) and my partner got a chai. Happy to see decaf and caffeine free options as not everyone can tolerate high levels, but still like to partake in a morning beverage. My partner can be picky about his chai, but he thoroughly enjoyed this one. I also ordered the Monte Cristo breakfast sandwich and just WOW. Melt in your mouth sugary flaky maple bread, and the mustard, aioli, and jam were a fantastic combination! I love me some sauce! I would eat this every morning for breakfast or lunch! Seeing how good my sandwich was, my partner, went back to grab an apple doughnut, and it was just as delicious! Parking on a weekend is basically impossible unless you pay. Nothing but kudos for this eatery. The location, the folks running the store, the decor and absolutely delicious breakfast sandwiches and coffees. Started off with walking in and seeing how quaint the decor of the inside is. Felt like being at an older relatives house where they have all the family history and pics up on the walls. Plenty of room and tables galore. Wander in and up to the showcase where we checked out the easy to read menu on the wall and the incredibly nice folks asking us if we needed any help or suggestions. Very talkative but not overbearing at all. Just very nice and never felt rushed. We order, go sit down and wait for our name to be called. The acoustics of inside were very pleasant. I am very soft voiced and tend to freak out if it's too loud in a restaurant but never had an issue because it's so quiet. We get our drinks and sandwiches. The sandwiches were in cardboard boxes which I personally think is a waste as I'd rather have a washable plate since we ordered to eat inside. I got the ham and cheese and the lovely Mrs ordered the avocado egg and cheese and these are served in their signature voilant which it like a donut and a croissant had a baby. This place was recently renovated into an upscale coffee and donut shop, which was what Nashville needed! There are two separate seating rooms with plenty of space to sit without being crowded. It's a great location on the main road right as you come into town. Prices are comparable with all major chain coffee shops. But the difference is that here, you are paying for great quality! This is honestly the best iced latte I've ever had, makes me wish I lived closer! Donuts do not compare with chains -- much different shape & texture, but so wonderful! I had the lemon hibiscus and was impressed. Service was quick, but I visited on a Sunday afternoon. Clean & easily accessible restrooms are always a bonus! read more

This shop at the corner of Franklin and Van Buren on the southern half of Nashville has a nice variety of items for your home. Though many are familiar like candles and kitchen towels and cups, there are many items that are unique, many with clever sayings written on them. Although in previous uses the building had both floors open, this current proprietor has limited access to the main floor which has a generally circular floor plan around the central staircase. Although I didn't make any purchases on this visit, I did enjoy browsing through the shop to see the different items. If I had place near a lake, I could find all kinds of items for such a home. This is a great place to pick up something for yourself or a gift to give. They have kitchen rugs & towels, Mood CD's, Art etc. They are located in an old house right on the main drag. It's kinda funny, but I love to go into this place on a hot summer's day. It is always cool, & the little fountains bring a tranquil feeling to your shopping experience. read more
