Just around the corner! Jumped off of 24 to fill 2 tanks and empty another. We stumbled across this restaurant which looks like a new building in an old town by other new and old buildings. Don't be fooled or discouraged, once you have been seated the menu helps you understand that this place is like a farmer in his Sunday best. Tried them again. Same issues as before. Left an entire meal out of our order we had it delivered so our whole family could eat breakfast together and so one of us had to leave to go get the missing items while everyone else ate without them if we were going to go and get anything we would not have paid for delivery. It is ridiculous. The food wasn't even good. It was greasy and bland, and the eggs were cooked in properly The sausage links were brown and serve trash. I'm 100% done. I cannot wait for them to close terrible terrible terrible. Also the DoorDash or just set all of our food down on the ground. I reluctantly now give Gabriel's two stars. Borders on one really. It had been a few years. This place is not packed like it once was. It used to be a struggle to find parking. They still have the goofy hours closing at three. It felt dark & dingy. Pieces of trash on floor runners as walked to our seats. Pieces of napkin? The cloth seats of the booths are stained. Although it's always been overpriced, it's gone up even more, and it's just not pleasant now. Three women at the front hostess desk didn't acknowledge my party right away, and when one did, she seemed annoyed we were there. Our server wasn't any more welcoming nor friendly. Worse, actually. I received a large mug of decaf. No non-dairy options and given bowl of individual cups of half-and-half. While it proved to actually be devoid of caffeine, the coffee didn't taste good at all. Not sure what brand they must be using. No refills offered for our table, but I couldn't even finish this cup. $3.00 for this crap. Soft drinks are nearly $4, juice almost $3 and $4 depending on the size... Everything here is extremely overpriced. The portion of hash browns I was given was huge, but they were not good either. I normally have trouble with undercooked hash browns with no color when I go out. These were overcooked and too crunchy to get on a fork. Greasy. Rye toast okay. I'm sure real dairy butter. I didn't bother to ask... I'm glad they offer mushrooms. However, I could tell they came from a can. I also like that tomato juice is an option, but I didn't get that this time. Rye bread is a welcomed sight. Given checks before we were finished. No drink refills offered. I was never brought the straw the server said she owed me. She only had one on hand. You must take your check up front to pay. As annoyed as they seemed to have us come in the doors, you'd think they would have checked us out sooner. My two sides ala carte with coffee came to over $11 before tip. Not pictured, a lady at my table paid even more for a fountain drink and their granola and yogurt parfait with fruit. It looked good, but good Lord. $12 and change?? Just really unenthusiastic attitudes. Food quality and atmosphere went WAYYY down. I feel like I need a shower and to put my clothes in the wash from feeling greasy and having that oily smell cling to my shirt which was fresh when I went in. I don't know how this place is still in business other than the fact that it's one of the only restaurant options in this awful little town, so you don't have much choice if you want to go somewhere to sit down... Been many times. Usually a good experience. Today, not so much. Waited an hour for food. It's a Sunday. I understand it taking some time. What i dont understand: Watching three tables (of 2, just like my wife and i) being seated long after we were, getting their order, and leaving! No lie. After sitting for at least 30 minutes, a table of 2 was seated directly behind us was there maybe 15 minutes and was brought a huge order. We sat and waited. Then, a booth next to us was seated. Not more than 10 minutes later, BOTH of our orders (ours and the neighboring booth) were brought out. I dont think our order was the kind of impossible order requiring a prolonged period to prepare. I ordered pancakes. My wife, an omelette. When order arrived, mine was not only cold, but HARD. My pancakes had become panleathers. When i say my food was cold, i dont mean the food was un-hot. I dont mean the food was not quite as warm as i like. I mean, the food was like it had come from the refrigerator-cold. We received 50% our bill, but id rather have had a good breakfast. A breakfast diner gem in Peru, Indiana. This place was cozy with great service, and delicious breakfast comfort foods. When visiting family in the area, I ate here twice within the week and each time the food was perfect. Cinnamon roll pancakes, malted belgian waffles, giant biscuits the size of cat heads, breakfast skillets - everything was delicious. The half-order biscuits and gravy for $5 is plenty big enough because the biscuit is so big. It's a simple drop biscuit as far as I can tell, but the gravy is sausage-y and peppery. If you want eggs + biscuits & gravy, just get the Dixie Breakfast (it is sorta hidden on the menu). They offer lots of other lunch/dinner options, but it is hard to think about that when you can choose Cinnamon Roll pancakes. I stick to breakfast foods at most diners, and this is deeply satisfying breakfast food. The small town of Peru is a perfect stop if you are passing through on a roadtrip, and I would recommend breakfast at Gabriel's followed by some fresh bread and pastries for the road from the German bakery a few blocks away. read more

Great place for breakfast/brunch/lunch. Waitress friendly and food was great. Split a breakfast casserole with my husband and they separated it out on 2 plates for us and we were both stuffed. I didn't even get to finish mine. Also bonus as we were able to take our puppy in training to the outside seating area. Easily accessible and great parking along the side of the street for our SUV and tiny camper. 5 out of 5 stars and would definitely recommend. read more

I was meeting family halfway between South Bend and Indianapolis and opted to meet at Gabriel's for breakfast and it did not disappoint. The menu offers a large selection and we actually debated between breakfast and lunch - breakfast won. Our group had a couple of omelets, a cinnamon roll pancake platter (huge) and a breakfast platter with pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage. The boys also ordered sides of hash browns which were enough for a full meal. One of the omelets was the wrong items, but opted to keep rather than having it remade correctly. Our server was friendly and checked in on our regularly. Definitely worth a visit! read more

I was visiting Peru for the day. I wanted go somewhere else but my friends wanted to come here. There are no meat alternatives here like a veggi burger, impossible or beyond burger. A lot of the food is deep fried which I do not eat plus I do not eat any meat. They do have some fruit plates which is good. The average person that likes there deep fried foods, meat and eggs with be happy with this place as there is a lot to eat for them. I got the Greek Athenian Salad. The lettuce is all iceberg which I do not eat. They did replace the lettuce for spinach and I asked them to dice it up for me. Brit was our waitress and she was very nice. Brit got me more cucumbers and olives as well as switching out the iceberg lettuce for spinach. read more

Very disappointing breakfast this morning. Ordered corned beef and 4 eggs poached and decaf coffee. Waitress asked if medium was OK. I said no, runny. Never order eggs poached here. Delivered hard poached (almost a hard boiled egg w/shell). Waitress asks if everything alright and I tell her I'd never order these eggs again. Her reply is that's how they poach them here. I make better pancakes at home. Ones they served me were burnt on one side and tough. The batter was overworked and too much icing on top of the pancake. Good pancakes speak for themselves. Also, my bacon was burned. Yuck. When I was ordering I inquired about the apple topped pancakes and the chef told the waitress the apples were from a can. WTF. You run a business not 30 minutes from Doud's Apple Orchard in Denver, IN and you serve canned apples! Fresh ingredients change the game man, go fresh and support other local business with your menu. Anyways, I would only go here again because there aren't many options in Peru, IN. I pass through so infrequently it will probably be another 5 years before I may hit up this place again. Stopped in for a brunch while on a road trip. Was pleasantly surprised! Our waitress, Tammy, was superb! Friendly, courteous, attentive! Food was excellent. Hubby had a standard egg sausage biscuits spuds player which he said was very good! We had specialty cinnamon roll pancakes and Carmel apple pancakes. My daughter and I shared those orders, they came plated separately. Food was fresh and tasty, with ample portions. Felt Very comfortable outside in this a Covid atmosphere. Tammy was wonderful! I love eating here. Of course I only really order one plate from here but I can't help myself! I LOVE their skillets! The waitresses here are so kind and nice! One is a bit forgetful at times but she's still nice. :) They have just started a buffet line on Sunday mornings but I have not tried it yet. One thing I do not like is the echo of place. I'm hearing impaired so it makes it very hard for me to hear my company or the waitresses. However I'm very happy they have Closed Captioning on the TVs in there. read more

First time visit and last time visit. The food wasn't great, the biscuits and gravy were very floury and the sausage patties were all dried up. The onions rings were soggy and tasted like old grease. The restaurant was dirty and dark. I couldn't believe it when we were told that the same people own The Fried Egg in Wabash, The Fried Egg blows this place out of the water!
