GAIL's Artisan Bakery is a small London bakery chain with shops across the city. I was at some of their branches and recently checked out the Soho shop. I stopped at GAIL's for a cup of coffee and something sweet. The shop is not very big, but it is nice and light. Friendly staff help you with the choice of bread and other food on offer and prepare a remarkably good cup of coffee made with beans from a London roastery, Union. When you like bread, you should definitely take a look at GAIL's selection of deliciousness. And even if you just want to stop for a coffee, by going to GAIL's you can be sure to get good coffee and quality food, and the bread is much better than at your average cafe! read more

Gail's is a great little bakery for a pit stop coffee and cake, but can be fairly overpriced for certain items such as the salads and sandwiches. The selection of cakes and pastries don't really change, so you can always depend on this place to stock your favourite sweet snacks but it would be great if they changed up the sandwiches every now and then. The bread is wonderful and my favourite has to be their cute twist on the traditional challah bread, which they make laced with marzipan. read more

As a resident in London for the past 4 months, Gail's has been my go-to for their great Chai Lattes and very friendly barista workers. I usually will set up to do some work for a few hours, being that I am a student and the atmosphere of Gail's is quite nice and pleasing--often times filled with others doing the same thing. However, while sitting at the barista bar enjoying my iced latte with two of my friends, who also ordered lattes AND food, the owner of Gail's, whom I have never even seen there before until today, approached us and essentially told us to leave within the hour, claiming "after an hour, it becomes a bit excessive to sit here." I remember, bewildered, thinking...'Did we just get kicked out for doing exactly what is intended to be done in a shop like this...and by the main person our money is going to a.k.a the owner...?' Excuse me if I am wrong, but I think any right minded person would agree with me when I say that this is exactly what NOT to say to three paying customers. Not only was this embarrassing, but extremely uncalled for and awkward. He didn't even properly introduce himself-- just asked us how much longer we would be sitting there for before getting to his absurd point. Sure--I understand that the shop is small and not much seating is offered, but we were literally mid-eating, having gone back after our drinks to order more food, which was clearly visible! I have given so much of my money to Gail's and have on many, many occasions sat for 2-3 hours to do homework while disturbing no one. It's a shame to see such a great place, usually filled with great people and loving baristas, be run but such an ignorant, block of wood for a "business man." read more

I am honestly puzzled at the hordes of people passing by with their coffee and pastries from all the global chains. It would be humorous if it weren't so wrong. I expect this kind of "sheep" mentality back in my U.S.A. I'm assuming people just don't know yet... Starting with coffee: Gail's espresso is masterful and I could live on it alone. Breakfasts are astounding. Would you believe a maple-roasted pear, with greek yoghurt and sourish buttermilk hotcakes? Or roasted portabella mushrooms and baby spinach with a fried egg on sourdough? And pastries are really in their own universe. Absolutely original concoctions, and they're hard to describe. A savory scone with walnuts and bleu cheese (I thought I would hate it because I hate bleu cheese, and I was so wrong.) Sweet things are breathtaking as well. And after all that, prices are reasonable. Thank you Gail!!! read more

This was a nice find during my stay in London. A friend had mentioned that they loved it when they visited with her family, which gave me pause as it is rare that a recommendation lives up to the hype. However in this occasion it was warranted. My colleague told me to go and buy the cinnamon bun from here because it was - and I quote - "A little piece of heaven". So I went, I shelled out the better part of £3 (WTF you hear me cry), and I was presented with what looked like a rock-solid muffin. It tasted stale. It was unexpectedly crunchy, and not in a good way. If my purchase was freshly-baked on the premises that morning then I'm a monkey's uncle. By the time I reached the bottom, there was a delicious little corner wherein I caught a glimpse of the heavenly qualities to which my friend referred. But it was a tiny segment. Barely a mouthful. And categorically NOT worth the jaw-clenchingly, purse-scrapingly high price. Yes, there are a lot of delectable-looking goodies on display in here. But then I had a muffin from Tescos the other day for 95p and that was lovely too. Calling yourself "artisan" doesn't give you the right to rip off the good citizens of Soho. I'm pretty unforgiving when it comes to eating establishments, not least when there are so many alternatives around the corner and I've given them the benefit of my presence and meagre salary over the option of so many others. I want to return and try this at a later date but I feel cheated. I've got a mortgage, I can't afford to eat cinnamon buns from Gail's more than once a year. read more

Stopped in here for a quick treat: carrot cake, which was delicious! Not too sweet, moist, and overall delicious. I'm not sure if it is customary in London to charge extra for eating in..but I thought it was a little obnoxious. Do I really need pay about 1 usd more to enjoy my carrot cake for 10 minutes at the shop? As delicious as it was, I probably wouldn't go back because of the dining in additional charge. If the carrot cake was the best I've ever had or I'm in a hurry and want to grab something quick, then sure why not..except, there are so many other cafes to try! Also - 5 pounds for a slice? Made a trip to oxford street specifically so I could visit Gail's! Their coffee is THAT good. The cafe is small and can be packed but Sunday morning is fine. I didn't eat on this visit but previously I've tried their chocolate brownie - woah it was good. I'll be back again soon! read more

I went here for brunch one morning with a friend before heading to SOAS and it was the absolutely delicious. If you have never tried a combination of egg and avocado you are missing out! I love places that take that extra step to be memorable, have impeccable service and create an atmosphere that is enjoyable and sociable and Gail's did just that. What's more, your bill comes to you in a beautiful vintage tin! It is a great escape form the busy/noisy Oxford Street/Tottenham Court Road and the area surrounding the British Museum and a wonderful place to come with friends. Stopped by briefly on a whim, as my wife and I got peckish on our way to a friend's place, and were immediately overwhelmed by the wealth of delicious-looking baked goods. Had a tough time deciding, but she eventually got a maple walnut(?) scone while I had a pecan roll of some sort. Both tasted just as wonderful as they looked, although I'd recommend a coffee or water to go with the pecan roll, as it was big and a little bit mouth-drying. It'll be hard to pass by without going in again to try something else, and their brunch menu looked excellent as well. read more

Visited Gail's for Sunday breakfast before catching a train back home. Partner's eye was drawn by very nice window display so in we went Friendly greeting by staff and made to feel welcome. Later manager had a nice chat telling us about the chain and Gail's businesses Breakfast was very tasty with perfectly cooked eggs ( we were asked how we wanted our eggs cooked and they arrived exactly as ordered). I had the English muffins with fried eggs, bacon and tomatoes while partner had the field mushrooms with eggs. Both very nice. Menu options not wide with about 6 choices and prices are on the steep side however the quality was definitely there and we both enjoyed our meals. Our breakfasts were £8.50 each with tea and orange juice on top. The cafe does provide free wifi (unlike our hotel who wanted £10 for 24 hours!) We were made to feel very welcome and left having stopped to select a pastry each for our train journey Overall nice but not cheap but we felt given the quality it was worth it. Manager says they are trying to be more upmarket than the Starbucks of this world with out being at the highest end. Very nice if in your price bracket read more
