I take my guinea pigs there. The vet takes good care of them; tho they have short lives, it almost feels like why send them to the doc in the first place: the females pigs almost always get sick at the end of their lives, basically leaves me scrambling for care and I am glad that I get help. (In that respect, the doctor doesn't mind it wasn't me taking my pig to see her, very accommodating.) Regrettably, after my first female guinea pig that runs around and talks back to me died, I have little to no interest in the other girls that followed. I have one male who manages to have a cyst last summer, and Dr Hileman had to run a test. Everything came under control, and the pig is cleaned up tho a tad underweight. Tho I do have a dog that also sees her, but because this place is one that takes exotic small pets, I keep going back. The doctor is very gentle. (This place was recommended to me years ago, so I am just one of many that comes here.) read more

Do NOT apply here. There's only one doctor here, and she treats her employees terribly--constantly nitpicking, micromanaging, and making the work environment tense and miserable. She wonders why people keep quitting, but the truth is you either leave on your own (like I was fortunate enough to do) or you get fired for not being "perfect." You only get about 60 hours every two weeks, and there's zero room for growth--don't expect a raise or any kind of advancement. There's no direct deposit either. Your checks are mailed (sometimes late), because apparently the clinic "doesn't make enough money." Also, be prepared for constant political conversations whether you want to hear them or not. If you want to be respected and treated like a decent human being, this is not the place for you. read more

When Dr. Wilson retired, Dr. Hileman bought the practice. She is the best and has a ton of experience. So smart and really knows her stuff. I wouldn't take my dogs anywhere else. Long time GVC customer over here. We've had all of the same experiences as the negative reviews and it was so disappointing in the end because as long as we stuck by the practice our loyalty was never reciprocated. When it was time to switch vets, GVC forced us to pay in-person for our dogs records which took over a week - this is unprofessional and shows just the surface layer of dysfunction. We often witnessed Dr Hileman speak very cruelly to her staff but worst of all when we visited our new vet, it turns out there were so many simple treatments our elderly dog could have been taking over the years for issues typical to her breed. She is doing better at the new vet but it hurts to know she was not getting the best care at GVC, nothing close to it. The most expensive care, yes, but not good care at all. read more

There are much better choices. My dog was a patient at Gaithersburg Veterinary Clinic for over 5 years. During that time he had multiple dental procedures. The final cost was nearly DOUBLE the estimate for every procedure. I repeatedly asked for the worst case treatment plan so I would have enough money. Every time the cost was at least $100s of dollars more than quoted. The vets would not work with me to develop a treatment plan of meds for my elderly dog. They required a specialty vet consult and $1,800 in diagnostic tests. I thought this was the standard, and my dog suffered. We moved to Frederick and found a new vet. He is treating Cooper with a standard course of meds for elderly dogs, and Coop seems to feel so much better. Prospect Veterinary Clinic in Frederick listened to me, and developed a treatment plan for my 12-year old dog that keeps him comfortable and doesn't break the bank. TLDR: Gives low quotes, final prices are often double. There are MUCH better choices for veterinary care in our area. read more

In brief, I am using Dragon Naturally Speaking to type this review. I am retired from the CIA's Clandestine Service. My coverman, the man who cared for me during my working years, and his wife have temporarily been taking care of their daughter's Chartreux cat. He is quite a guy, speaks five languages. We get along very well talking about various topics including politics. Anyway, he began coughing poor boy, and my coverman and his wife had to take him to the vet. After doing his due diligence here on Yelp, he read the reviews about this clinic, that is Dr. Hileman and her staff. He was impressed to they took my friend Katush there. Katush said he was treated very well. Everyone, doc, and staff liked him. He found Dr. Hileman very personable, with a caring bedside manner. Both she and her staff were very professional, helpful and made sure my coverman and his wife were also comfortable. X-rays and blood work were obtained. Turns out my little friend had pneumonia. He is taking antibiotics and seems to be doing well. As everyone knows vet bills can be expensive. You don't know what it has cost the Agency to care for me all these years. The clinic fees are appropriate. Katush was not guaged, that is overcharged for extra tests. In tact, only on x-ray view was taken. So, in summary, I would highly recommend you bring your pet here. read more

TLDR (in depth review below) I have used this office for 20 years, and they figuratively spit on us and our pets in an emergency. They don't seem to care about the health outcomes or being available when really needed. I recommend you go literally anywhere else. Your fur babies will be so much better off. FULL REVIEW My family and I were loyal customers to Gaithersburg Vet clinic from the late 1990s to 2018. About 20 years. I have had to really think about how to explain my utter disappointment with this clinic. With years of use, things start to add up. While I don't think Dr Hileman is necessary a bad vet, I don't see her as an effective vet. Recommendations have been made for our pets (2 dogs and 4 cats in the time we have used them) that haven't, in my opinion, been in their best interest. Without the dirty details, there have been bad results due to administrations and recommendations. We aren't vets, and didn't have the knowledge to see if what we were told was good or bad. However, is isn't the treatment itself that cause us to move elsewhere. There are a few large red-flags that forced us to seek other help. The worst- The vet has never been available for us in times of emergency. While the office may be "open" no vet will be on site. This has resulted on one occasion where we rushed our poor late cat to the office and we were sent away to a emergency vet. My cat died on the car ride to said clinic. We had him confirmed dead at the emergency clinic. The emergency vet sent us condolences and a stamp of my cats paw. We heard nothing from Gaithersburg vet. On the next occasion our dog broke her leg. This was the final straw. We called ahead this time. Again, no actual vet to see her, go to emergency. Emergency vets, in my mind is not useful for continuity of care. We found a new vet at this point, much farther but highly recommended. They are open 7 days a week and have 5 vets on staff. We attempted to get records from Gaithersburg vet to this new clinic so they could have history before operating. What happened next was petty and disgusting. They charge the old fashioned "copy fee". I can't remember the exact number, but was somewhere between 25 and 50 cents per page. And we had to physically go to the office to sign for it. And it will take a week to get the records to us. Right. In the day and age of high speed scanners, it takes a week and insane rates to run medical history? Whoever was the receptionist at that time was very nasty about the whole thing. We ended up in a pinch only getting the vaccination history for our pets which they are bound to provide. Another big red flag- Excessive ordering of diagnostics! Every time we came in, they wanted to perform tests usually in the $300 area. This seemed excessive. Turns out it is! Talking to my new vet, similar orders of diagnostics should only be done every few years or as needed, and a full panel of blood work with this vet is only $125. I will do all I can for my pets, but for perfectly healthy animals I feel thoroughly bled for years of high-price testing that is not within the norm. Why I finally was pushed into writing this review over a year later (and I did wait a long while to write this after the incident, as I was seething after the fact) was our final dealing with the clinic in regard to a lost vaccination record. I was only privy to part of the conversation, as a poor receptionist at my new vet had to speak to this impossibly rude woman first. Omitola was on the phone, and refused to fax the history to my new vet. I don't know exactly what was said, but the receptionist was exasperated after dealing with her. When I got on the phone, I was lied to multiple times. First, we had an outstanding balance (upon questioning it is for something they hadn't provided and we didn't ask for, but they wanted us to pay so it COULD be provided- utter nonsense), and she lied about saying she wouldn't provide vaccination history. I heard quite clearly the receptionist asking for that and being denied, when I questioned Omitola on it, first she said we had to pay the BS outstanding balance first, and with further pressing and outlining legalities to her, she said she had never said she wouldn't send the history. I gave her the number for faxing info, and when I asked if she would send it she promptly hung up the phone. She is the epitome of horrible administrative staff. While we eventually got the vaccine history, based on her comportment, how she has remained employed in reception is mind blowing. I felt compelled to apologize to the new vet's receptionist afterward on behalf of Omitola as the receptionist seemed upset by the interaction. Not an ounce of professionalism or compassion. Please do some extra research before you choose a vet. There are so much better options out there. read more

Took my dog here for annual exams for a couple of years. I need a vet who will take the time to explain the why and it took me awhile to discover that the vet here does not do a good job. My dog gets E. Boehmi every year due to some exposure in our environment. I pay for pills every year to treat this. I have asked the vet before about this. It seems pointless to have to pay for treatment when we know from history that my dog will test negative and positive the following year. I was told it was not good for my dog and she should be treated rather than alternative options. Only recently after going to a new vet after moving did I find out that I could have been paying for advantage multi rather than frontline preventative to PREVENT this. Seems to be a lack of care or a scam to get more money. read more

The practitioners from receptionists to caretakers to technicians to the vets themselves are uniformly professional, caring, and knowledgeable. It is actually 4 and a half stars for me. I have been going to this clinic with my animals for a number of years now. And yes, there have been tough days when one of them is dying; but most of the times are good since my pets are so used to their care. In fact, I am impressed how cool and collected the staffs are when they are faced with so many animals, particularly after my little pets had done a number on their clothing. They were also kind enough to allow others to bring in my pets for their vet visit when I was busy, or allow extra people when time permitted. I really can't find much fault with the place personally, though I do notice their cat has been gone for a number of years and they never mentioned its whereabout. read more

The Technician was very short with us and did not seem to care for my cat very much. The entire time he has me questions his back was turned to me and his head in the computer. I have been bringing my pets to this practice for almost ten years. For the most part, my pets were well, and needed routine services. Recently, my cat became very ill and I decided to get a second opinion from another vet in the area because I thought there was something more serious than a food allergy going on. I thought this would be a simple process. Although I had always paid my bill when services were performed, this practice required me to submit a detailed form online and pay money to release my pet's records. In addition, I was told that the vet required ten days after the receipt of the payment so that the vet could "edit" the notes in the file. I said I diud not need "edited" notes, but was told I had no choice. Because I live about 30 minutes away, I asked if I could pay by credit card over the phone or on-line or by fax. I was told the practice would only accept payment by mail or in-person. I immediatley mailed a check and filled out the form and sent it in. After 15 days, I called, and was told that the office could not find my check or the form, and I would need to resubmit them and wait another 10 days after they were received the second time. They said they would not fax or email the records to another vet, but would only mail them. The office manager said that under law, they were not permitted to fax them. (This is not true.) By now, my cat's health was progressively declining. I brought her to the second vet without her files, and was informed that my cat had a large tumor that was likely cancerous and that he probably had anywhere from 2 weeks to one year to live. He died a few days later. Needless to say, based solely on my personal experience, I can no longer recommend Gaithersburg Veterinary Clinic. read more

As a former employee and vet tech I'm BEGGING YOU PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE. I only worked here for less than 3 months before I couldn't stand it any longer. Between the horrible treatment of the staff by the doctor and the backwards way of treating patients it's a horrible clinic and the doctor should not be allowed to practice. There is no sense of sterility, she reuse syringes and just about everything else to be cheap,the doctor herself doesn't wash her hands(she doesn't believe in soap), not even for surgeries, the surgical instruments sit in a cold sterile not even being fully sterilized! I now work in an emergency room and in the last 4 months we have taken in more than 5 of her patients due to Dr.Heilmans inability to treat patients properly. Al these patients were in critical care due to her negligence. She makes up her own logic and is out of touch with reality. Talks and treats her staff like dirt when they're the only people with common sense and actually care about the animals. The only diagnostic tools in the hospital are an ancient blood machine and a busted x ray machine which even if they works she wouldn't be able to diagnose a pet properly cause she's so stuck in her own reality.. seen to many animals die because of her for no reason other than her incompetence. We decided to try Gaithersburg Vet Clinic with our new dog. Previously we had gone to another clinic in Rockville but found it pricey and we felt unnecessary procedures were often recommended. So far we really like GVC and find the staff super friendly. They even invited me to bring my dog by a few days before our appointment so that he could get used to the Clinic and the staff. I've never written a review of a vet clinic before, but given what happened during my last visit, and the posting they had of how proud they were of their Yelp rating, I felt the need to. Let me start by stating that my cat's regular vet was Dr. Smith. If my review was of the front desk staff, most of the techs and Dr. Smith, this would be a 5 star rating. But on my last visit, and one previously, I had the misfortune of seeing Dr. Hileman. Her bedside manner was appalling, The wait time to deal with her, abysmal. When I'm on time for my appointment, I shouldn't have to wait over 30 minutes to see the vet, and it happened more than once. After being there for 2 hours and still not having my questions answered, I made the best decision for myself and my cat and left and went to the ER, which was good because Dr. Hileman missed the fact that my cat had fluid around his lungs! read more

I have never once doubted our decision since then. I have always felt comfortable with my animals being under their care, the staff is super friendly and they always remember our pets. Dr. Hileman took care of our family dog for 17 years before she passed away last week. Even though I don't live in the area anymore, I was touched by clinic's kindness to our family at the loss of our beloved pet. One of my mom's regrets when telling me that our Macy was gone was that she didn't have a chance make a paw print as a keepsake. A week later my parents received a sympathy card in the mail from the whole clinic and inked paw prints that must have been done after she was gone. I love this clinic and the staff and especially Dr. H. I have used several different Vets before going here, none gave the care or concern I found with this clinic. My dog has been going since he was a new puppy (he is 6 now) and he does not fear going in and seeing everyone and getting his check up. I think that says a lot about the attitude of the staff as I have had to literally drag my other dogs into previous clinics as the seemed to know it was all shots and pain. Not here, it is great. Love this clinic. Dr. Hileman is great. She is very knowledgeable, and really cares about her patients ( and their mama). I have an older cat, who was seriously ill. I was on the verge of losing her. Thanks to Dr. H. I still have my Reina with me. there are no guarantees as to how long, but I didn't have to lose her unnecessarily. I am grateful for more time with her. I have had dogs previous and had gone to the big store with the big vet clinic inside, not calling no names...but anyway I was not impressed with their work, nor their dog insurance such a freakin rip off. I did some research this time before trusting the care of my new puppy by any other. I seen that the Gaithersburg Veterinary Clinic had a couple of pleasing reviews. So I added them to the list of quotes, not only did the reviews get me but the prices was better than the other 5 places that I had reviewed. When I called to set the appointment the staff member was excellent, friendly, professional, and inviting. When I arrived the atmosphere was very relaxed I loved it. Dr. H was awesome, she showed full interest in my concerns, care and knowledge just blew me away...gave me information that I have never received from the other bigger place, very warm and loving towards my puppy...The staff is awesome I love this place and I am calling it home for my puppy and future pals.
