I just spent this last weekend in Galena and was pleasantly surprised by all the new things that have popped up within the last two years, this place being one of them. The baked goods are out of this world good. We ended up going both days and made a pit stop before we drove home. Throughout the weekend we tried the breakfast empanada with egg and sausage, beef empanada, buffalo chicken empanada, the spinach and feta quiche, the cherry scone, the snickerdoodle cookie, the cinnamon roll, and the Argentinian cheese bread. IT WAS PHENOMENAL..... all of it. If I had to pick a single favorite I think the buffalo chicken empanada was the winner, but all of it was so good. Definitely stop by and check it out. read more

I don't write reviews much but I feel compelled to do so here...My family took a little getaway to Galena, IL after hearing how wonderful it was. We parked our car and stopped in because it was across the street from where we parked and I needed some coffee before we had our adventures. Wow, am I glad we stopped. We were greeted by two lovely gentlemen would we would later find out owned the place and baked everything fresh that morning! Well, I wasn't really in the market for pastries that morning but it smelled so darn good in there and they were such great guys, I got a couple treats. They were absolutely delicious! So good in fact, we had a hard time finding anything else in the city that was as good as their assortment. We ended up going there everyday for breakfast getting some of their breakfast empanadas which were light, & flakey. I think between all of us we tried literally everything they had to offer and everything was delicious. Of course, the kids favorites were the Macrons! I am really glad I stumbled into this place by chance - they literally made the whole trip worthwhile. Thank you Galena Bakehouse, we will DEFINITELY be back. Came here for a snack/light lunch on a Saturday while walking around Galena. The shop is adorable and staff was so friendly. We got the empanadas special to share, which came with 2 empanadas and a kale Caesar. The empanadas were delicious with a flaky warm crust. The salad was good, but hard to eat walking around as the kale pieces were very large and would have been easier if they were chopped up more. We finished with the cherry scone which was also great. This has to be the best bakery/coffee shop in the area. It was definitely the highest rated. We came right when they opened at 8 and it was already getting pretty crowded. It is small inside without any indoor seating, but there is a little bench outside or you can take it to walk around. I ordered the almond coffee cake and the coconut caramel cold brew. The almond coffee cake was just amazing. It was fluffy with the sweet almond flavor I love so much. The almond coffee cake is an absolute must. The coconut caramel cold brew was refreshing, sweet, and light. I usually love warmer drinks, but on this hot day the cold brew was perfect. I loved the robust flavor of the coffee. It was brewed perfectly and exactly what I needed. The service was great too. The girl behind the counter was patient and helpful while I chose what I wanted. Even the customers were nice and welcoming. The next time I am in the area I will definitely come here. It was great. read more

This is my favorite bakery! As a vegetarian, it can be tough to find delicious and filling food. However, the spinach and artichoke empanadas were SO good. Pro tip: grab extras because they are great reheated the next day! Our family also loves the dessert and bakery options. The pumpkin muffins are one of our favorite treats. I recently bought a large selection of macarons for a work event, and they were a hit. The beautiful colors made such a pretty dessert tray and conversation starter. Galena Bakehouse is located in the charming downtown of Galena, IL. We placed a custom order a few weeks ahead of time for a birthday and the recommendations, timeliness and kindness from the owners started everything off with 5 Stars. When my wife and I went to pick up the order, we were greeted by the owners and they were very friendly, the place was charming and the coffee was excellent. We couldn't have been happier with how the macaroons, cupcakes, and cake turned out. If I didn't live 10 hours away, I would frequent this place and I recommend it to anyone wanting a great experience with some delicious food in a charming town. read more

I went to Galena Bakehouse on the first morning of my 3-day wedding weekend. The empanadas were delicious, the coffee was awesome, and the service was great. I came back a half hour for another coffee (crazy rehearsal day). I came back on the morning of my wedding day, they remembered me and remembered it was my big day, and the coffee was on the house. My experience at Galena Bakehouse was so good that I came back yet again the next day on our way out of town. We'll be making sure to visit at least once every time we come visit Galena! read more

The cutest little joint with the most friendly owners and out of this world baked goods. They even have gluten free muffins so I can indulge even with food allergies! The macaroons are so good we went back to grab more before they sold out. Today we drove an hour to Galena just to pop in for treats and then go for a walk. We visited The Bakehouse for chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal cranberry cookies, macaroons and empanadas today. All were amazing as usual!! While we were there my 10yo daughter proclaimed that The Bakehouse is her favorite shop in Galena and that she likes it even more than Poopsie's. If you know kids and their love of Poopsies, you will understand just how big of a compliment this is! Do not hesitate to stop in if you are in town. This is one of the best places for a quick bite/treats that Galena has ever had! We got the empanadas, a salted chocolate cookie, and the pumpkin-cheesecake pie. They heated the empanadas for us and they smelled so good that we ate them before we left the parking lot and went back for more!
