It looked like no one had pulled a weed in weeks. I realize it's the middle of summer and they take over fast, but I mean, the crab grass was keeping the balls from traveling down the course! Clean up the weeds, and it will be much better.

We traveled from Wisconsin for a 4th of July youth baseball tournament at the Dubuque Sports…read moreCenter. The fields are situated at the dead end of a steep, narrow road that leads you to believe this can't be the correct way, right up until it opens up to the facility. There is a large gravel parking lot, but it is laid out very tight making it a bit of a squeeze for everyone to safely get in/out as one set of games concludes and the next begins. There are five fields with all sand infield surfaces. The artificial pitching mounds are rather on the small side. One of the fields is laid out toward a hill and the steep hill is actually part of the outfield. We were on/near fields 1 & 2 all weekend. The bleachers have an aluminum roof over your head for protection from foul balls & as shade from the sun. Reasonably priced concessions and a pretty decent selection of offerings available for purchase. The grounds state "no carry ins" which is par for the course. During our two days the weather was in the high 80's with the humidity even worse. On day one several parents went back and forth to cars for bottles of water for our players and ourselves. The staff monitoring the gate throughout the day did not say a thing about this and for safety in super humid conditions it made sense you would allow your guests to carry in water. On day 2 the person monitoring the gate said "no carry ins" per the owner. There was no free water source available (that I saw at least) inside the park aside for buying it from the concession stand. I get as a business your trying to make money, but c'mon man how about using a little common sense with parents bringing in just water. For as much as I otherwise enjoyed the facility, the handling of the gate on morning two was a major turn off. (Side review: parents if traveling here for a tournament, consider staying at the nearby Best Western. They have a large pool & rec area for parents to gather. They also offer a solid complimentary breakfast to kick start the day.)

In 2016 my kids played fall baseball down there and none of the batting cages where working. This past summer my kids where in tournaments there and they only had 1 batting cage out of 3 working so if you wanted batting practice you would have to wait in a long line. The one year my kids played fall ball down there with their baseball teams they never stuck with the schedule that was made out. The schedule would change between 2-3 times each week and one time they tried changing everyone's schedule the morning of games. Some of us that where there for 8:00 games where told they wanted us to wait until noon for our 1st game. Fields 1-3 have good seating but if your kids are playing on fields 4 or 5 the seating sucks.

We fished on the Mississippi River primarily for walleye because they are fun to catch and excellent to eat. Steve is a professional walleye tournament competitor and has a lifetime of fishing knowledge and experience he shares with his clients to make their fishing trip successful. His boat is a 19-foot Ranger that has every option available to successfully fish any technique required by the conditions. Steve knows where the fish are and what to use. And if the fish aren't biting he always has another method or another spot to try. Steve's entire focus is his clients catching fish and having a fun fishing experience. He makes sure each client's rod is fully rigged and continuously positions the boat to get bait in the right spot. On this day we caught several walleye, some big ones we couldn't keep because they were in the slot (20-27 inches), and enough keepers (15-20 inches) for an excellent fish dinner. Steve filets the fish in seconds once back on the dock and beautiful slabs of tasty meat are ready for cooking. There are paved walking paths for folks to enjoy. I saw, possibly for the first time, a red-winged blackbird. There are some lovely views overlooking Galena. There are restrooms, but they look like slightly higher end port a potties and not washrooms. There's also a picnic table and plenty of parking.

To start my twins' 7th birthday weekend, we went hands-on at Creative Adventure Lab -- part art…read morestudio, part science lab, part playground for the imagination. Think oversized Lite-Brite wall, LEGO heaven, magnetic walls, pottery painting, colorful straw building, and even an indoor rock climbing wall. My 3 autistic boys were in sensory heaven: Benjamin dove into LEGO builds, all of them loved the giant foam blocks and magnetic wall, and the Lite-Brite lit up their creativity (literally). The climbing wall? Not their fave -- but that's the beauty of this place: so many choices, you just follow what sparks joy. We only had 2 hours (after school, before closing) but it was the perfect amount of time. Just $10 per kid and free for me . Small crowd = basically our own private creative wonderland. We left with happy hearts, and a few more problem-solving skills under our belts. Checked this spot off my bucket list -- and now it's on my "must-return" list too.
