We went on Sunday morning for their Mother's Day brunch. They advertised it as a buffet, salad bar, soup, and dessert including a chocolate fountain. All of this was accurate, and there was a variety of options. However, my husband and I (both in our very early 30s) were the youngest in the room by anywhere from 25-40 years, and that was very evident based on the food. The food was very basic and bland-nothing was BAD but it was absolutely aimed toward the older crowd. Each mom got a "mom-osa" included with their meal, which was very sweet and had more juice than champagne. My husband ordered one that was MUCH more alcoholic than mine was, which was a bit of a bummer when you think about it. The atmosphere was also super super super dated, which was weird to me because I thought they had closed for a remodel? The service earned this place another star though. Our waiter was super attentive, friendly, funny, and made sure we had a lovely time despite the food being aggressively mid. All in all, for $80 for two people, I would have wanted a better spread and a lot nicer atmosphere. Think this will be a one and done for us-maybe we will come back for a non-buffet meal and stick to White Pines for our holiday spreads. read more

A true Gem! I was driving from chicago to Davenport for work, thought I could make it the whole way without lunch or dinner, but due to some construction, I was wrong. My wife looked up restaurants and I wanted something really good. Went to Galena steakhouse, the place was super clean, the staff was all happy and welcoming. They were very busy but they did offer to serve us at the bar. Cocktails were done right and the food was amazing! I had an end cut Prime Rib, that was actually prepared medium (near impossible on an end cut), my wife and I also shared an order of scallops and we had saganaki for appetizer. Honestly, living in chicago I've been to a ton of steakhouses, but this was right up there with the best. Perfect temp and perfect seasoning. Will definitely be back, and build it into my work trips. Nestled in a rural community this restaurant proclaims to be a slightly more upscale venue offering Steak and Seafood. Your are greeted on the exterior by a small parking lot not easily maneuvered by trucks or larger SUVs. Unassuming but seemingly quaint the exterior boasts a typical dark brown color scheme with a green lettered sign proclaiming its name.  A small air lock or breeze way greets you and opens to a small receiving area, where I usually wait a few moments for someone to greet me. The bar is the first seating area cordoned off by half walls and adorned with typical dark wood and brass accuments. Dim lighting and uninspired furnishings add to the attempt to create a sort of late eights early 90 Vegas steak house. While this would normally appeal to me the flow of the building and less than comfortable seating leaves the patron wanting and hoping thier meal will be worth all of this thus far. Drink selections are not top shelf but if you have a less refined palate the offerings are suitable for a typical farm town. Johnnie Walker and Glenfiddich are bottom shelf to possibly middle range but certainly not Lagavulin, Red Breast, or Pappy Van Winkle. The wine is a step up from a box and the beer is basic. The menu is limited and I was expecting that as such the items would be spot on. Pricing was a bit high for this area but given the failed attempt at creating a upscale restaurant I figured they were compensating for something. The three experiences I have given this establishment have every time been met with disappointment.  The salad bar is dismal and offers little more than questions as to who thought this was anything resembling acceptable. The meat is sub-par, grisly, and tough to chew. While the chef has never come close to getting "medium" achieved correctly, the wait staff is at least exceptional pleasant. Thankfully so since you will be asking for more dissapointingly priced booze to drown your increased dismay at the meal you now regret and are seeking a way out from. After thanking your server you will find the lost host by the door you entered (who only seems immediately present to take your ransom, as this meal has you by the balls all evening.) Remember when backing out of your spot that unless you are in a smart car you will need to make a 3 point turn and offer up a few hailmarys to ensure you dont leave the violation to your wallet you just endured to find a new form of hell by hitting some retirees Cadillac.  As you leave feel free to flip the bird to those big green letters that greeted you and stop by McDonalds to fill that void of regret you just created. read more

I don't have kind words to say here. The food here is incredibly overrated and over priced. The restaurant is in desperate need of an overhaul as the decor is a very dated 90's fashion, my steak was dry and overdone (I ordered medium rare) and the salad was a little on the soggy side. Our server spent more time in the kitchen socializing with the cooks than she did attending to the tables and when I went it wasn't a very busy time. Not to mention that the other customers were being incredibly rude to my daughter and I based off of my appearance. No this isn't the restaurants fault, but it is the type of crowd this establishment attracts. I can't say that I picture myself giving them another chance, as I've visited them twice and received the same treatment on both occasions. It's 2019. People are visibly tattooed. Still just as good, since my last visit almost a year ago. I live 300 miles away in Indianapolis and this place is THAT good. I remembered that soup and salad comes with an entree, so I made sure to have room for it first. The soup last night was creamy potato. It was very good. In additional to the fresh vegetables, my favorite items at the salad bar were the pasta salad and coleslaw. My bf had the special steak of he night alongside his whiskey and coke. It was cooked to perfection and juicy. We actually tried the fries that came with his dinner instead of leaving them untouched. Crunchy, non-greasy, and seasoned steak fries. Delightful. For my dinner, I ordered the shrimp scampi. It came with a slice of garlic toast. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and very large. I don't want to leave out the service either. Was hungry on the way home from Ames and decided to use Yelp to find a restaurant on the way. This review will be pretty detailed and I wish I could give half stars, because the total would probably be a 3.5. To start, service was very friendly and we got our drinks right away, but that is where the quality of service ended. We weren't ready to give our order immediately, having not been here before, so when she did eventually come back to take the order, it took awhile. Then two other tables came in and were seated after us and ordered after us. One of the tables got their food ten minutes before us and another about a minute before us. We didn't order anything that should have taken longer than anyone else to prepare, so it as very odd. And the table who got their food 10 minutes before us even had appetizers. Our waitress spent a long time at that table, because the patron had like a million questions about different drinks and items. I hope they left a good tip, since they seemed to monopolize her while the rest of us waited. To start with, my husband and I had the salad bar, which as pretty decent and had quite a few items as well as some good salad dressings. The ingredients were fresh and while not a large salad bar, it was quite satisfying. Son ordered the steak, which he said was a 3, as it was overdone and husband ordered the chopped steak, which he said was a 4. The mushrooms and onions were good, but very expensive. Overall his steak was good, but not the best. However, I thought my broiled shrimp were really good, a 5. Good sized shrimp with a delectable buttery garlic sauce on them. The potatoes e about a 4, we all had them and they were a little salty, but not overly garlic and I felt they didn't even need butter because the flavor was so good and they were moist. We got the dessert to go and my hubby put it in the fridge, which I think dried it out. It looked good, but I don't feel that I can honestly give a fair review since we didn't eat it fresh. The first few bites I took of mine were good, but very sugary and his was not fresh enough to give a fair review. The total bill for the three of us was $77 without tip, so for the price we just expected more. The food and service weren't good enough to drive two hours back and even if we were on our way home from Ames, I think we would try someplace new. read more

This place was fantastic! Just two small details that merited the four stars. Wish I could've given 4.5 AESTHETICS: Very well-kempt restaurant, very elegant. QUALITY: Very good. I got the shrimp scampi, and I'd get it again. Also got a huge slice of cake for dessert that my wife and I split. My cousin got a steak that looked like something to die for. QUANTITY: Generous portions, for sure! Salad bar comes with most entrees. Only two minor, minor complaints: (1) My wife said that the macaroni and cheese we got for our three year old seemed a bit generic, not home styled , which you might expect at an establishment like Galena. (2) A lot of the salad dressings were low cal, low fat. I would have preferred regular Italian dressing; my 6' 1" and 145 lb frame can handle regular dressing. Was surprised to see that. Stopped on our way back home. To be honest, not really impressed. Standard salad bar, but the Chicken Dumpling soup was tasty. We started off with the Blooming Onion for an appetizer...it was so bland. My husband's Strip Steak was also lacked seasoning. I had the Parmesan Crusted Tilapia. The seasonings on this dish landed at the other end of the seasoning scale...way too much. The "crust" was so soggy and the size of the portion, for the price, was extremely disproportionate. The side of vegetables needed salt. We decided to see if the desserts could somewhat save our meal. I live in Chicago, n most Chicago steak houses still have the same decor. I tried the dragon berry mojito , the mint was very fresh and lots of fresh berries . We also came during lunch , so we had the country fried steak which was ALL steak ! Mash potatoes , baby calf liver and onions , and the chicken strips with sweet potatoes . For lunch this was perfectly portioned & priced , it even came with a salad but there is an option for $3.00 salad bar ... All the servers were friendly , welcoming and informative . we didn't come dressed up , I had came back from swimming , n was In Jean shorts and a regular T-shirt but there is no dress code from what I know , most of the ppl were seniors during lunch . Solid good food, a little dated in decor, but tasty and well prepared food. They did a nice martini shaken and served in the shaker, and the steak was cooked perfectly. We ate here a couple of times for dinner and were very satisfied with steak, fried pickles, and a salad bar that had lots of choices, including deviled eggs. Lunch greek salads were huge, topped with protein as an option but the feta cheese added was enormous and way too much (maybe not a negative to some people!) Was craving a nice piece of steak I where else to go in the Sterling-Dixon area but "Galena Steak House". The place does look pretty drab from the outside and not much better inside although the separate bar area is a cozy spot to grab a drink and watch tv. The server wasn't very friendly, (maybe she had a bad day) but that didn't bother me much. The decor was old and fading. The cloth napkins they gave were maroon/red so all of the white patches of cloth from whatever other linens they were washed together with was very noticeable. I ordered a steak well done and did expect it to be a little dry but definitely not burnt! Next time I'm craving a steak I will go elsewhere but will come back to have a drink and pub food at the bar. read more

We were in town to see Reagan's home and I found this place through Yelp. Looks kind of run down and built 40 years ago from the outside but when you come in it is decorated nice and cozy with a fireplace. The entrees come with soup, salad bar which had tons of stuff, and choice of potato. The Prime Rib was alright and slightly dry even though we got there pretty early and it was the house special. The wife got a seafood pasta that she said was great and we split an app of fried mushrooms, which were definitely fresh battered in house not those cheap frozen kind. The service was very fast and our server was amazing and explained everything perfectly and made sure we had what we needed. Not bad for a steakhouse/small town Midwest classy establishment. As we ate it filled up with Dixon's older crowd and then massive groups of homecoming dates, Would definitely go again. read more
