We had a phenomenal stay at the Gallatin River Lodge! We stayed in the Trout Lake Lodge and it was spacious and comfortable. They have a table and chairs outside of the rooms - a perfect place to relax! We had dinner at the restaurant both nights, and it is pricey, but so worth it! We had a wonderful conversation in the bar with the woman who does the wine ordering and she carefully selects great wines! We had a wonderful bottle of Pinot Noir from Big Table Farm at a very fair price. Dinner was delicious both nights. They prepared a lovely vegetarian entree for me the second night, so thoughtful and delicious. Yes, the dinner prices are high, but the attentive service and willingness of all the staff to make your experience wonderful makes it well worth it. I would much prefer this place anytime to a big chain! The breakfasts are wonderful and the breakfast staff are so friendly and accommodating. Breakfast is not included in the price, but the $10 price is so worth it - delicious eggs, homemade jams and bread. One morning the breakfast was included in our package - bonus! We went fly fishing on the property, and though we didn't catch anything, it was peaceful and beautiful. Cindy, the owner, set us up with licenses and even offered to make us a lunch and drive us to the trail. We will absolutely be back to this little gem! It has created a beautiful memory for us. Had an absolutely lovely dinner at Gallatin River Lodge to celebrate my husband's birthday and everything was great. The greeter immediately greeted us and sat us. The server was funny and attentive. The food was delicious. Started with the cheeseboard with a local selection of cheeses and accoutrements. And everything was local, they didn't just say that. It came from nearby farms and ranches and local shops. Good job! The soup of the day was warm and soothing, perfect on a bitterly cold night. And finished with the trout which was exceptional. This is where my husband and I spent our wedding day night and it was fantastic. Such a home-like feel. And so cozy! Excellent. Had a wonderful evening, party of five. Expensive, but so worth it. Started off with a cheese board, that was quite amazing with several different cheeses, raw honeycomb and huckleberries. Great flavors. We were not rushed to place orders for entrees and took our time with the cheese plate and cocktails. When our entrees came everything was cooked to perfection and plated beautifully. Dinner was delicious. Cheese plate and wine were great. We have one complaint. The lamb chops we're ridiculously small. My husband ordered a dinner of lamb chops, his plate wasn't even big enough for an appetizer. The serving of mashed potatoes was more of a smear on the plate. How can they charge $45.00 for such a measly serving. This lamb must have been harvested from its still pregnant mother it was so tiny. There were two tiny chops on the plate and the waiter said it as half a rack. Not! The waiter warned us they were small but even being warned we weren't prepared for what they served. The small smudge of mashed potatoes was good but it was not enough for two forks full. Craziest dinner we were ever served for $45.00. Not going there again. read more

The Gallatin River Lodge has the best Roasted Sockeye Salmon that I've ever had. It was done to perfection and melted in my mouth! Our waiter was friendly and efficient, very attentive. He kept our wine glasses full and our party laughing. It was a wonderful experience in a beautiful rural setting with spectactular views of the mountains and the Gallatin River. Let's start by saying they have, hands down, the most delicious pillows on earth. Our room was spacious, luxurious, quiet and delightful. The grounds are gorgeous, the fireplace in the great room is divine and the atmosphere was extraordinary. My girlfriend and I were not fishing but we know our husbands would have loved this place. We walked to the river, had breakfast in bed, and the night before a glass of wine in the living room area. Even my dog Cooper freely roamed the place and everyone stopped to say hello to him. My husband surprised me with reservations for dinner here on our anniversary. We had never been here before and found the atmosphere and view to be quite lovely. Our server was excellent, she had great insight to the wine selection and even had me try two tastings before I chose a glass. Our meal started off with a bread basket with a unique spread that accompanied it, very good. We shared the organic garden salad to start, and loved it! One of the best salads I've ever had, the goat cheese that was served with it made it very memorable. Our meals were delicious, he had the chicken and I had the seafood risotto and neither of us could finish the generous portions they served. I really enjoyed the romantic and serene atmosphere, and the view we had was beautiful. While we didn't have room for dessert, their options looked awesome and we hope to be back to try those. It's a bit out of the way for Bozemanites so you'll find a lot of tourists there. Reservations are highly recommended most nights. Given it's location, it's not a place you just drop in on anyways. The food is top notch, so is the service. It's not overpriced considering what you get, unlike many places in Bozeman now. It's indubitably one of the top five dinner restaurants in the county. Perfect for romantic dinners and getaways. I can't find anything substantial to complain about. A nice dinner for two, including food, wine and tip should run you about $100. read more

A hidden oasis that is also affordable! On a recent cross country trek from San Diego to Portland Maine, and specifically from Montana to Yellowstone area, we arrived in the Bozeman area to stay just a night. Up until this point we would choose hotels based on three criteria; cheap, clean and most important to my boyfriend - no bed bugs (www.bedbugregistry.com)! We did our usual search on Google places and found Gallatin River Lodge. I was sure it would be over our 'budget' of $100, but when I phoned and explained that we are just passing through and would be there by 8 pm I was quoted $125 due to it being off season, with full breakfast. (Though, at $180 it is worth it if we were on vacation-stay). We were keen to venture into something other than Super 8 so we decided to 'splurge' and go for it...and thankful we did. After phoning later to say our arrival would be after 9pm, the gentlemen on the phone was kind enough to inquire whether we were hungry as he'd keep his chef on! (off season so naturally they'd send him home if the hotel/restaurant was not busy) Oh, and did I mention they allow dogs - and without a fee! The setting is serene with surrounding woods, peace and quiet. The room was gorgeous, a log wood bed and couch, room included a fireplace and jet tub. It was exactly what we needed. The breakfast was delicious. We will be back for sure, but this time for more than just one night! read more

Absolute gem. After arriving in Billings Tuesday evening with a stay at the Hampton Inn. Started my morning with a 2.5 hour drive to Lewistown (google it) for a meeting, then the 3+ hours to Bozeman. Saw a lot of Montana, deer, antelope, and scenery in one day. On the advice of a co worker I booked a room at the Gallatin River lodge with the intention of running into Bozeman for dinner and a drink. Once checked in I never left! Atasia poured my drinks while James? Cooked my dinner. Room was fantastic! I was picking my co worker up at the airport at 1pm and asked for a late checkout, although accommodating they were expecting a full lodge today so they put me up in the library, which served as my office. My only complaint is that this is a fishing lodge and being an avid fisherman here out of season....guess I'll have to come back read more

I have been to the Gallatin River Lodge many times and they have never disappointed. The rooms are relaxing, clean, comfortable and inviting with amazing views. The restaurant is amazing with wonderful food with a seasonal changing menu that sources from local Montana farms and ranches, it also has a great wine list. The staff has to be my favorite part. They are so accommodating, friendly and caring that you know you will be well taken care of, and they obviously enjoy what they are doing. This is my happy place and if you have a chance I would highly recommend coming here in the winter, with the fireplace room and huge Christmas tree it is a treat. It is also wonderful in the summer with the accordion doors that open to the pond and wedding pavilion. read more

We drove an hour to have a meal that was outrageously overpriced and we departed hungry, having eaten everything including the multiple bread baskets. My wife and I had one bite each of the snapper entree, after which we sent back due to being undercooked, and it tasted like it had been in the fridge for a week, so we did not eat that. We waited an hour and twenty minutes for entrees. The portions were scant and overpriced. Others reported some good flavor, but again scant. Four ravioli and four mushrooms for 32$ is ridiculous. We had the lamb appetizer, roasted root salad, steak (one of the few places in Mt that can do medium rare right) and steelhead trout (a bit salty). For dessert, the creme brûlée and chocolate mouse. This has been on our hit list the last couple years. I hate to add to the hype and attract more people, because I want to keep it to myself. The service is always amazing and the setting is beyond description. We have been in late April, fall and early December, and never been disappointed. We have only eaten here, but really need to stay here next time. The food always has something to surprise. As a tip, the Filet Mignon is better than the Ribeye. My only disappointment was that my wife couldn't travel with me. I just visited Bozeman for an unseasonably warm weekend. I stayed at the Gallatin River Lodge and ate 3 meals with them. Each one was wonderful. Leading up to the trip, PJ was extremely personable and flexible with my planning. Sara was at the bar for my first meal and made a great suggestion for a glass of wine to match my dinner. The next morning, the breakfast was very straightforward and as good as it gets. My final night in Bozeman, I had a quiet meal alone and enjoyed a delicious Montana Mule. I was thrilled with the Gallatin River Lodge and look forward to bringing my wife up to enjoy the decadence. read more

It is a sad state of affairs at this restaurant and in this community for steak lovers. I had the Wagyu center cut ribeye. It was dog food. Tough, greasy, flavorless. The other choice was grass fed Tenderloin. I'm sick of crap steaks here and in other local establishments. Grain fed USDA Choice or Prime should be the headline steaks with the poorer quality and non USDA graded beef as an option for whoever chooses the poorer beef eating experience. Have been to GRL a couple of times in the last few months. The first visit was uncomfortable because the wait staff was making a terrible racket helping out a busy kitchen by hand drying silverware and stemware next to the bar. We were snidely greeted by the hostess and waited 30 mins after our scheduled reservation for a table. The service was terrible again, one of the dinners came out cold. My wife and were looking for a long-deserved rest and relaxation and wanted to be pampered. We were not disappointed! What a great experience; we will return and you should get your butts out there as well. Our room had a comfortable king bed with the most seductive sheets and pillows; there was a big jacuzzi tub and a comfortable shower. A fireplace and a large screen TV, with a comfortable sofa rounded out the room. And, I always love it when they throw in free wi-fi. It was roomy and comfortable. The staff is friendly and attentive; just look like you need something to drink and someone asks you if they can get you a drink. The service for the entire stay was outstanding. Dinner was extraordinary, we had the walleye cakes appetizer as well as the scallops in a gorgonzola cream sauce. I loved both and ended up dipping bread in the left over cream sauce. The scallops were cooked perfectly as were the walleye cakes. I had the chief's special smoked pork chop with a flathead cherry glaze with yukon gold potatoes and a crunchy vegetable medley. The pork chop was out of this world. It was nice and moist with a great smokey flavor. I left no potatoes or veggies on my plate... what does that tell you? My wife had the almond crusted walleye, off the menu, which was cooked perfectly; we both enjoyed it. The bread was also very good. For dessert, we shared a cheesecake that was yummy. Of note is a very good beer list and an extraordinary wine list. We tried a couple of Oregon Pinot Noirs, which were outstanding. I am going to bore you all before I get to talk about the breakfasts... fresh eggs, cooked anyway you want them.... omelets, pancakes... the best friend egg, cheese and bacon sandwiches that you have ever tasted.. try it on their homemade english muffins. The Gallatin River Lodge was a great disappointment. We waited 50 minutes just to get our first courses which were not delivered all together. The trout crepe was not only disappointing but was served in a bowl that made it very difficult to eat. I had the seared scallops with pickled vegetables that were far and few between. My wife had the vegan wheat grain dish that was also very disappointing. The service was fair at best. I don't mind paying for good food and good service but The Gallatin River Lodge is pretentious. Summary: Abominable service, mediocre food, overpriced drinks. I just got home from my first visit to the Gallatin River Lodge after hearing good things for years. I was thoroughly disappointed. It was some of the worst service I've had, and the food did not make up for it. I went with a group of coworkers, a group of 9 people, so we had a fairly large table for this restaurant. The bad service began immediately. The waitress, a tall blonde young lady, stood at the end of the 10-top table to take appetizer orders. The guests at her end of the table (I was seated at the opposite end, against the wall) said they'd already ordered an appetizer, so she assumed that was all the whole table wanted. My wife and I never got to order the appetizer we wanted. She came back and too drink orders, again, from the end of the table. I was looking at the menu and didn't notice she'd come back. Apparently, I was supposed to holler my drink order down the entire table. We ordered our dinner. They have both Tenderloin and Gnocchi Tenderloin on the menu. My wife ordered the Tenderloin Gnocchi. Oops. When the waitress brought our dishes, she brought the Tenderloin. When she came back to the table, my wife told the waitress that she'd ordered the Gnocci, not the Tenerlion. The waitresses response was, "I guess there was a miscommunication. Should I ask them to make the Gnocci for you? It's going to take a while." in a way that said, please don't ask me to do that. Then she asked, "Do you just want to eat that? It's really good." My wife agreed to eat the Tenderloin. The waitress never apologized for the mix up. She SHOULD have apologized for the mix up and said, "I'll have that Gnocci out for you as soon as possible. I'm terribly sorry." So, we at our meals. I got the Ribeye special, which was adequate, but not great. I've had better ribeyes at old-school cafes. Before I finished my meal, I went to the restroom. When I got back to the table, the waitress had removed my plate, with food still on it, without waiting to ask if I was done eating my meal. I've never had that happen at a good restaurant before. Or any restaurant for that matter. When the bill arrived, we were charged for the Tenderloin, which was twice as much as the Gnocchi ordered! Luckily, one of our party, who was aware of my displeasure, asked the waitress to change that out before I had a chance to. Between the bad service, less-than-impressive food, and overpriced drinks, I don't need to go back to the Gallatin River Lodge. I hope you have a better experience. read more

I really wanted to love this place but the service was absolutely terrible. My group and I had a reservation for 7pm and when we arrived we couldn't find any employees to seat us which was kind of weird. After standing around for a few minutes we were finally seated. We ordered a bottle of wine which probably took around 30 minutes to arrive. Apparently it was our server's first night on the job so we obviously gave him some leeway but there were only 2-3 other tables in the entire restaurant. The brie appetizer was probably my favorite! I ordered the elk steak special for my entree and it was awesome. I also tried my sister's salmon which was delicious. We ordered all or most of the desserts on the menu and enjoyed most of them. The chocolate/walnut torte was kind of frozen though and we didn't end up finishing it. The ambiance was nice but I wish we had requested to sit by the fireplace! read more

The setting is stunning and we had a seat at the open doorway overlooking the fly fishing pond and mountains in the distance. Our service was excellent and our meals were extraordinary in both flavor and presentation! I have rarely had the joy of such exquisite flavors and textures and colors! I had swordfish and my friend had lamb, both prepared to absolute perfection. We have stayed and dined at the Gallatin River Lodge on multiple occasions over the years. We have always been impressed with the ambiance, the physical facility, good food and friendly staff. However, our recent visit this August was horribly disappointing. We have routinely assembled a large group (10-20) of area friends to join us for an evening of fine food, cocktails and conversation. In recent years we have noted a decline in the offerings from the restaurant in choices but especially in quality. Interestingly enough as the quality has declined the prices have steadily increased. Our biggest disappointment was in relation to the service and general demeanor of the staff. Our dinner was fraught with issues to include: Our reservation for 15 people was badly handled. We had specifically requested the patio dining room but upon arrival were told that it was "unavailable" and that there was a $500 charge for use of that room. Our reservation only called for a single long table not the whole area. Our group was placed ultimately in the bar area at two tables. Our original reservation had been ignored or somehow overlooked. There was no service from the bar area for the group as they enjoyed the patio and pavilion. We had to serve as the waiters to deliver drinks to the group. We were even asked to process the charges for each order. The barman was willing to mix the drinks for us, but he was not willing to assist in delivering them. The general attitude of the staff was surly, condescending and uncooperative especially the two gentlemen working the patio area. We have never witnessed this tone from the staff over the years. This was particularly disconcerting. The food choices were limited and were very delayed in arriving at the table. We were seated at 7:00 p.m., orders were placed about 7:30. All of the dinners did not arrive until 9:00. The food was served on small plates with small portions. The quality and quantity of the food does not justify the price. The prices ranged from $26 - $55 for appetizer size portions. We were told that the Gallatin River Lodge was understaffed. This is confusing as they were in the midst of a peak season on a beautiful Friday evening with a listing of reservations which would indicate the need for an appropriate level of staffing. Why would the management not take the initiative to adequately staff the facility to meet demand?? Our disappointment is such that we will question a return to the Gallatin River Lodge for dining or lodging. Fortunately the Bozeman area offers many other choices. read more
