The Galley has a local dive-bar-by-the-marina feel, which I actually really like. Everyone is usually happy and chatty, there's live music, and I love watching all the old people dance. I enjoy riding my bike down here for breakfast or coming for dinner and watching the sunset. Great marina views, family and dog friendly, and my son enjoys coming too. You can also walk around the water while you wait. Food is decent, portions are big, and prices are reasonable. Drinks are super inconsistent though, depending on the bartender they're either under-poured or over-poured, and the same drink never tastes the same. The biggest thing holding this place back is the service. I've had some REALLY bad service here, not rude, just bad. Better bartenders and servers with stronger customer service would make a huge difference, especially now that it's one of the closest restaurants to the Gaylord. Great location and atmosphere--I just wish the service matched it! read more

My friend and I visited The Galley at the Marina in Chula Vista for happy hour today, and unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience. When we first arrived, we sat waiting to be acknowledged, but the bartender never greeted us or checked on us. We eventually moved and sat at the bar just so we could place an order. The happy hour menu was also misleading. We ordered wine from the happy hour menu, but no one told us that only one specific wine qualified for happy hour pricing. We didn't find out until we received our bill and were charged full price. A simple explanation from the bartender when we ordered would have avoided the surprise. The happy hour potato skins were equally disappointing. Instead of traditional potato skins, they were very small potato wedges with minimal cheese and a few chives. They were served with ranch dressing, but no sour cream or any explanation that this was how they were prepared. As the evening went on, another bartender came on duty but never acknowledged us either. We also watched her struggle through several pitchers of excessively foamy beer before loudly shouting, "What the **** is wrong with the tap?" across the bar. It wasn't the level of professionalism we expected. Overall, the lack of customer service, poor communication about happy hour pricing, and disappointing food left us with no desire to return. There are too many great restaurants and bars in the area to spend money where customers don't feel welcome or informed. read more

We saw that the ferry folks in San Diego added a route to the Chula Vista Marina, so decided to take the ferry and stopped in for lunch before we headed back on the ferry. The place was SUPER busy, it was mid-day on a Sunday so we were a bit surprised when we were asked to wait (it was about a 25 minute wait, we were seated at about 2:15pm). The hostess said that the kitchen was backed up, which is why they were having people wait to be seated (there were a few folks complaining about the open tables that they saw). When we were finally seated, we asked the waitress what was so special and she said that they're always that busy. Because I have a small appetite, we decided to split the Prime Rib Melt on sourdough. Wow, was it good. It is served like the traditional French Dip, which made it even yummier. We didn't order drinks, so I cannot speak to their bar or beer selection. The placement of the restaurant is a bit odd. When we first landed at the marina, we wanted to walk around the park and go in and check out the Gaylord hotel. The marina's sidewalk goes right through the outdoor seating area of the restaurant. It was a little awkward to walk though, but the wait staff didn't flinch as we walked past them. Obviously they're used to it. There's a large park on the bayfront. Quite a bit of it is blocked off because they're building a playground. I heard that the park was a bit of a mess, I'm guessing that since the Gaylord went in things have cleaned up and that's why they're funding a playground for the area. I don't know if they offer live music during the weekdays, but they had a band unpacking as we were leaving (3'ish). Transportation/Parking Parking - I am not familiar with the marina's dock master, so cannot speak to visiting by boat but there is a parking lot if you're coming in by car. Trolley - About a 20 minute walk from the Blue Line trolley. Head down H Street and take a left on Marina Parkway. Ferry - There is a ferry from the SD Convention Center to the marina. Was here on 3/18 for the live band!! Total Yacht Rock vibe and people dancing and having a good time by the marina. Vibes were up and when we saw clam chowder on the menu things just kept getting better. We sat outside where we could watch the sailboats docked, drink lemonade, and listen to the music. Galley at the Marina was one of the first restaurants to appear when my colleagues and I searched "restaurants near us" while on our work trip. We saw conflicting reviews on different websites so we decided to read through them and also look at the photos. Most of the complaints we read about were related to service and price, but not food quality. We decided to roll the dice because the food DID look really good in images online. Upon arrival, the appearance of the establishment (inside and out) definitely could use a refresh. It looks like there haven't been many decor updates in recent years and if I'm being honest, it didn't exactly smell great in there. When you walk into a restaurant, you expect to smell food and not much else, but we also took in consideration that this restaurant is at the dock, so there may be smells they can't control. We were seated immediately, and it took a little bit for a server to come over to our table...to the point where we started to consider going somewhere else, but right as I broached that subject our server came over and from there things ramped up for the better. The server took our orders, and the food came out in a very reasonable amount of time considering we all had different meal selections. A couple of us ordered dishes made with steak which can take longer to prepare. I personally had the surf and turf kebabs and a side of onion rings, and when our plates came out, they were piled high and heaping with food. So although other past guests had complained about pricing in their reviews, I can see that there is value based on portion size, presentation, and quality. Our server did a great job checking on us and making sure we had the correct orders and that our food all came out at the same time so we could enjoy it together. To be honest, the food is fantastic and the reason for the three star rating...the two missing stars are for the need for a refresh of the restaurant for aesthetic purposes. If a place is going to charge $30 for plates of food, you expect a certain standard visually. At the very least you expect the tables will not rock while you're sitting down at them. Something as small as a stable table impacts the overall experience and takes away from the full opportunity to enjoy the meal and conversation. read more

So outside the door, there was a sign along with a sign in sheet that seemed to imply I should wait there for a hostess (the lines with the names and everything). It was a slow weekday lunch though, and the place was not even half full, so I assumed it was from the day before? I was the only customer outside the door. I'd only stopped for maybe two seconds before an employee happened to come out to walk around to the outdoor seating, I think? He didn't even acknowledge my existence. Being antisocial and apathetic, I elected to ignore his existence also and walked in. After walking in, I immediately run into another stand/podium thing that made me feel like I should wait there. Once again, I was the only customer there and another employee immediately walked right past me without acknowledging my existence. Neither deterred nor offended, I immediately walked past her as well, saw the mostly open bar, and sat down. As I'm sitting down, the woman bartending greets me. All that just to say I relate to some of the negative reviews about service being unresponsive, but also kind of don't care. Lmao I got a blue moon and a prime rib dip with onion rings. It was definitely better than I expected. The meat slices were thin, tender, and juicy. I consider thin to be a good thing here as it leads to meat that's easier to make tender, juicy, and seasoned, as long as there's multiple slices. The cheese was cheesy. The au jus cup was a good size, very dippable. I guess I prefer a thicker bread for a dip rather than toast, but sourdough is a good choice if you're using toast. The onion rings were also large, specifically the actual onion inside the breading was also substantial, which I appreciated. On a work trip and this was the closest to our hotel so we decided to try it. View from the patio/outdoor deck is of the marina. I had the fish and chips (their most popular item) and my husband had the BLT. The size of the fish pieces were HUGE and the breading was good. Overall, we felt the food was okay and filled us up but flavors weren't quite there. The fries were crispy and were probably the best part of our meals. The whole experience was like a hustle, servers just spread too thin and versed in the art of avoiding eye contact. Very disappointing experience at The Gally. We arrived excited to try the restaurant, but the service at the front completely turned us away. The host and at least two other staff members walked by us while we stood waiting to check in for a table for about 10 minutes, and not a single person acknowledged us or even said "we'll be right with you." We understand places get busy, but basic hospitality and acknowledgment go a long way. After being ignored by multiple employees, we decided to leave and dine elsewhere. Hopefully management improves the front-of-house customer service because first impressions matter. Management needs to pay a couple dollars more and hire employees than know how to treat customers. read more

Needed to kill some time at the marina and saw The Galley was open early but couldn't find a breakfast menu online so decided to take my chances and fortunately they do have a breakfast menu. The chilaquiles were very good and my friend had no complaints with the spinach omelette. Prices are kind of high but portions are large. The place wasn't busy when we arrived and our orders were quickly taken and the food arrived soon after, but service after that to see if we needed anything or for drink refills was nonexistent. While I was in Chula Vista I wanted to take a look at the new Gaylord Pacific Hotel. It was lunchtime and I noticed this place right across the street so I decided to go in and give it a try. It seemed like almost everybody there was seated out on the patio deck overlooking the marina. It's covered and weather permitting, this is a nice place to sit and eat. I also noticed that practically everybody was eating the Fish and Chips which is identified as "World Famous" on the menu, so I ordered that too. They gave me an enormous portion with four pieces of cod fried to a deep golden brown. The meal was substantial and very good tasting. They charge $21.99 for this meal, which is not cheap, but considering the quality and the size of the meal, I think it was definitely worth it. read more

We went on a Sunday at 5:30. There was a live band playing on the patio. It took about 10 minutes to get a host to seat us. There was chaos as far as the service went. The servers were overwhelmed and didn't know what table to greet first. We sat and waited maybe another 15 minutes just waiting to put in a drink order. I will say that I've been here before and had no issues. I do believe the servers and runners were doing the best they could considering what was going on. The kitchen was definitely moving the food out. I would say more training and organizational skills would've been a solution. I have experience in the restaurant industry which is why I want to be fair in my review. I will come back but not on a Sunday or when they are really busy. read more

I see this establishment was rated 3 stars, well I believe it's under rated. If you going for good food sometimes it's not always about all the stars aligning. Something could be missing and every day is different. From how the visit here everything worked out well. We were greeted and seated immediately, there was plenty of parking. We chose to seat outside with the Marina view. Shortly after sitting down our drink requested was taken along with the food order. I think my 15 to 20 meeting the food arrived. There were all types of different options on the table from Poke to Prime Rib sandwich. No one complained about their food and table service kept the beverages flowing. After this experience my thoughts go to why the rating is low. Maybe they were not happy about something, well I will leave it up to you to decide. So you're aware 4 adults the bill was $122. Bad service, bad food. They charged me for premium vodka I didn't order ($12.99). I asked the waitress to see my receipt before I paid but she blew me off and scanned my card. I gave a 20% tip and again asked for the bill. I had to follow the waitress all over the restaurant. She would see me and hold up a finger, like just one minute. When she finally gave me the receipt it was $53.98 for 2 tacos and one vodka soda. And they added a $9.60 VIP seat charge for 2 people. We walked into an empty place at 2:45 on a Sunday afternoon and sat in plastic chairs. No where was it posted or were we told there was a charge to be there. I complained and was told they would take the drink off but then the girl who said she was the manager said she called the owner and he was not going to do anything about it. Went here for Mother's Day (today) with an 11:30 reservation. We were seated on time, but no waitress came by to greet us or take our drink orders for 20 minutes. We decided to order our drinks and food at the same time once she finally came by, since the wait to even be greeted was so long. I was able to catch her attention and ask her for our bill and take out boxes and ended up walking to the front to pay in hopes to save her a trip from running back and forth to our table. I've never met any other table staff aside from her. I went with the egg Benedict which was amazing btw! And we'd been wanting to try the zucchini for ever and learned that it's now on the Summer Happy hour menu and served at breakfast on Sundays. What a delicious treat at a great price!!! The convention center will begin to bring new customers, that may expect a larger variety of food options and faster service, but what makes the Galley unique and special to me and many other local customers is the peaceful atmosphere with simple home cooked style comfort food without all the overpriced decorative bean sprouts and garnishes. read more

The service is extremely slow very laid back almost like Island time. I think it might need a little upgrade to just now next to the Gaylord Hotel. But it's very relaxing very chill with a beautiful view if you sit outside. But like I said they're going to have to up the game now that they're going to be next to a high-end Hotel I waited about 10 minutes to be seated bear in mind I was maybe only the 4th customer outside. Food portions are extremely large. I have been sitting at my table for about 10 minutes and nobody has offered me water but they did say they'd come back. I booked this place for a large group and although in the beginning, it was very hard to reach somebody. I finally was able to and put down a reservation. Arrived at a Saturday night to a great live band playing, and the vibe here felt absolutely electrified. The staffed were quickly to get a set up, and our large group was sat down. I feel like the places prices are fair not high not low but fair. The food I would say the appetizers were the star of the show. My favorite appetizer was the temporary shrimp which were massive pieces of shrimp and even larger than the shrimp in the main entrées. For the main entrées, I would say that prime rib was nice and cooked properly, the mahi-mahi was a little bit dry, the ribeye was cooked well. The baked potato was better than the prime rib I would say, and the desserts were great. I'll also add that their drink drinks here are made very well a little bit stiff, which is a better bang for the buck and the views can't be beat. read more

Great service for our large group and awesome fun waterside ambiance. I loved the live band and overall island vibes. The jalapeno margarita was refreshing and spicy. We also got a lot of appetizers to share including the ceviche, blackened ahi tuna sashimi, nachos with steak, buffalo wings, and lemon pepper wings. Everything was great. I got fish and chips. The fish was tender and flakey, the breading was nice and crispy and not overpowering the fish. There was a lack of flavor over all, I wish the batter had additional seasoning. The tartar sauce was more on the side of mayonnaise than traditional tartar sauce. The coleslaw was fresh but also missing a bit of flavor. The French fries were fine.
