First time at Gaylord Resort. We went to check it out, see the pools, walk around and have a bite to eat. We want to spend the day at the pools next time. The sports bar is huge. Our server Felicia was great. We watched some of the Germany vs Paraguay on a humongous TV wall. We shared a Wagyu burger and Peach cobbler. The burger was so delicious and deeply rich flavor. It also had some truffle oil which was really good. The fries were perfectly made and very crispy. Unfortunately, we ordered medium rare burger but got medium to medium well. We were at the Gaylord for a staycation and decided to have dinner here our second night (went to the Old Hickory on night one, reviewed separately). Before we even sat down, I asked the hostess to ask the chef about the buns for the burgers. I cannot eat egg and REALLY wanted a burger with a bun. They weren't too busy so she went and asked. Their buns do contain egg but they said they could use sourdough bread for my burger. YAY! :) (yes, I can order a burger wrapped in lettuce but a burger needs a bun so that all of the flavors soak into the bun. It is all a part of the experience) We have been on the hunt for the perfect burger in San Diego (refer to above paragraph, that burger *must* include a bun sans-egg) and we *FINALLY FOUND IT*!!!! We both ordered the Wagyu Beef Burger - medium rare. Mine without onion rings or aioli and sub sourdough bread for their bun. It was everything I wanted it to be and more. First, I love that they asked how we wanted it cooked. Just like the bun, a properly cooked burger is definitely part of the experience. It was juicy and flavorful. It was SOOOO good that I didn't even put condiments on it. Their fries were crispy and tasty, also very good. I am sad to report that I couldn't finish my burger (or my fries). I don't know why we didn't decide to split a burger instead. I think that we were so excited that I could get a burger with a bun that we forgot that my appetite is that of a bird. I hate to sound like an older person here, but why don't restaurants plan on noise level? It's not like it's a new concept. Sound dampeners got a long way into helping make the experience more enjoyable. I'm not 'just' there to watch sports, I want to have a conversation with the people at my table. Transportation/Parking Parking - They do offer valet parking and have a parking garage (I believe that both are for a fee, and any validation they do at dinner is not for the entire amount). I believe there was free on-street parking and there's a gravel lot in between the Gaylord & the marina that people were parking in. Trolley - About a 20 minute walk from the Blue Line trolley. It's a straight shot down H Street, and I believe it's sidewalked the entire way. Ferry - There is a ferry from the SD Convention Center to the marina beside the Gaylord. It's $15 one way. At the time, there is no sidewalk connecting the marina to the hotel. It is a short walk and not too busy with traffic. We'll definitely be back! I always feel like I need to apologize for not taking photos, my personal opinion on pictures of food is that they really need to be done by professionals. After we checked into the hotel my family and I came here to have lunch and watch the FIFA game. Spain vs Belgium. The huge tv here made it so fun to watch. And of course Spain won !!!! The service here is friendly and welcoming. The food we ordered was pretty good for bar food. The buffalo chicken and fries were my most favorite. The wings were really good too so were the nachos. My son loved his burger and my nephew said his Philly steak sandwich was good. The beer selection is great. Overall we had an amazing time here watching the game and enjoying our food. I have been searching San Diego for an ocean view spot, that offers adult beverages without the price tags of the view. I have found the perfect little happy hour spot. Growlers (inside the Gaylord Hotel) offers happy hour from Monday through Friday from 3-6pm and it is delightful. I have to admit, we had only gone in for a drink after walking the marina but I ended up ordering their croquette and a pretzel. The croquette was small but to be expected for the $5 dollars. The cheese dip that comes with it and the pretzel is delicious. It is warm, gooey and just the right amount of kick to it. The pretzel was ginormous but equally as good. My friend had the IPA and I had their Sauvignon Blanc . It was perfectly crisp. But the views. The views of the ocean, while being sun-kissed just added to the experience. We sat in their outdoor patio space which is perfectly shaded but allows you to still feel the warmth of the sun if that's your preference. The service was wonderful. While in Chula Vista last week for a conference, I found myself here daily. Sometimes twice. Honestly, there are worse options for me than a sports bar. The food was solid, the beer choices were very sound (you automatically add a star when Pliny the Elder is on the tap list, no? ), and the service was great, whether I was seated at the bar, or at a table with others. What made this place stand out though were the TVs. I mean, a 70' screen? (And, yes, 70 feet, not inches). First off, you can validate the first two hours of your parking, and there's plenty of it in the parking structure. It's a short walk to the sports bar. You check in right at the entrance and they ask you if you'd like a table, or sit at the bar. For the appetizer we went with their half dozen chipotle honey citrus glaze chicken wings for $22. Bright citrus upfront, smoky heat on the finish. I would order 2 of these as my main next time! We shared their huge $26 angus beef burger which included a side of battered fries. This was their premium burger blend topped with smoked cheddar, served on a brioche bun with creamy guacamole, garlic aioli, caramelized beer onions, and fresh lettuce. Messy but delicious! Made reservations for my friend's birthday at 7pm on a Friday evening. It was crowded and there was line of walk-ins. We got in line at 6:53 and got to the front at 7. We were told to wait in an area with chairs against the wall. People who walked in got seated and we were still waiting 20 minutes later. When my friend went to talk to the hostess, she was told that people were being seated in order. WTH!?! Why would anyone make reservations then if you were going to be seated in order of the walk-in line anyway!?! There really should be TWO lines - one for those with reservations, and one for walk-ins. Other than that severely unprofessional service at the front, the rest of the night went well. We were surprised that every dish was amazing (for a sports bar). Think elevated bar/game day food. Our server Nancy was excellent and we loved her Padres outfit! She made sure to keep us happy and the different courses arrived at the perfect times during our meal. Went on a Thursday night and the line was out the door. Overall, it took about 10 minutes to check in at the front desk and another 20 minutes for our table. Once we checked in, they had us wait against a wall to the right of the entrance. As 20 minutes passed by, a manager came up and called our name and took us to our seats. We wanted to watch the Dodgers game that night and they seated us in the corner where we couldn't see the big screen. There were about 4-5 tables available that could have accommodated us and were the same size table we were sitting at. We asked if we could sit in one of those tables instead but the manager said no. He said he could change the channel on a small TV near us. What?! My wife and I couldn't believe it. The server took our drink order and provided a kids menu for our daughter. Drinks came and he took our food order. We ordered the following: -Beef Chili Nachos (corn tortilla chips, house made chili, white cheddar cheese sauce, black beans, jalapeños, lime crema) -Cheeseburger with French Fries (kid's menu item) -Crispy Chicken Wings (with chipotle honey citrus glaze) -Strawberry Trifle (chiffon cake, strawberry compote, fresh strawberries, white chocolate whipped cream) -Banana Pudding (banana pastry cream, whipped cream, Nilla wafers, fresh banana) Everything was delicious. I loved the colored coordinated beer keg wall and long communal tables for larger groups or making new connections. I've made since friends this way and I love that they have this. I ordered the Beef Chili Nachos $24 and had the Mango Mystery Cocktail $18. The nachos were fresh and much thinner than the usual which is how all nachos should be. Their house made chili was absolutely delicious. I would buy a tub of this to go if I could! The Mango Mystery cocktail was also great with vodka and lemongrass shochu, lime, orange and mint with a really cool dragonfruit garnish that slowly changed the color of the drink. We checked with the hostess and we got our table pretty quickly. Our server was a little slow to attend to us, but that because they have a lot of tables and not enough staff, so not her fault. Because of that, when she arrived we just ordered everything we wanted right away. We got our drinks within 5 minutes. The food did take a bit longer than we'd hope for, but when it did, it came out hot so that was good. The food quality was great! My chicken wings were good! They have them in 4-5 different various. The Angus burger was fire!!!! And my kids really liked their chicken tenders. They usually don't finish them at other places, but here they destroyed them. The TV's are HUGE!!! That was definitely cool to have. They do have a lm outdoor eating area, but it's the bay so expect wind. I think inside is better, especially if you came to watch the screens. Overall unimpressive, the space is nice because it's new but the food was underwhelming. The overpriced drink tasted like it was from a can, the order was wrong and needed to be sent back. It is a good space to watch sporting events as they have TVs throughout and a very large screen in the middle of the restaurant. read more
