A couple followed in behind us; the gentleman immediately asked us if we needed help finding anything; I replied, no, he never asked the couple if they needed help. What you heard from your employees (the female employee and the supervisor you mentioned in your reply), are totally skewed versions of this incident. As a store that's been operating for such a long time, why push all the faults to a teenager for something he never did? He is the victim of this incident and it's so funny to see how your employees blame everything on him to get away from their mistakes! First, my friends and I (4 people total) sat right next to the boy. When he and the female employee were discussing about the sign, there was NO raised voice from both side at all! What you heard about "raising his voice"and "repeatedly interrupting" are not true. What I heard was he offered to check if people had signed in. (And he had been doing it from the beginning! When our party came in, the boy asked if we signed in at the front desk). As for "stepped too close to her personal space," I did not witness that myself, so I will not comment on this. But I want to mention, if personal space is something the female employee values so much, why did she "step too close" to my personal space when she checked my ID? Second, when the supervisor came, he yelled at the boy and threatened him to get out or he will call the cop. The supervisor was the one raising his voice, being angry and aggressive! The boy was so confused and scared, even then he did not raise his voice at all! The supervisor did not give him a chance to explain or apologize! He didn't even care. He just kept threatening the boy to leave. What you heard from your employee that "he could have apologized" does not make sense, since he never gave him a chance to talk. Whatever he said, the supervisor just interrupted him and threaten him to leave. Erik, please ask your employees on what really happened. As adults, it is pathetic that they don't even admit what they have done wrong! They lied about what happened and pushed all the blame to the boy, so that they can be good employees? This is hilarious. Because of this incident, your store at least lost 10 loyal customers! Won't add any updates after this, but the fact that I spoke up for the boy, whom I don't know, means he was so mistreated. ------------------------------------------------ One of the staff members construes positive feedback as blatant and rudely criticism. The shop was hosting casual yugioh duels in their back room. To enter the room, participants are required to pay $5 and sign their name on a list. However, there is no signage that tells customers of this requirement, so some customers forgot. As a result, a staff members walks in to the room and speaks in an accusatory voice, telling everyone that she is going to cross reference everyone's ID with the sign-in sheet. A teenage boy then speaks up saying that no one in the back room had any malicious intent and simply wasn't aware of the requirements to participate. He then recommends the staff member to post signs to notify customers before entering the back room. He even offers to tell any new customer walking in to make sure to sign their name and pay the entry fee. How does the staff respond? She goes to her manager and complains that a customer is being rudely. WTF?! Said manager then tells the boy to leave the building or he will call the cops on him. Absolutely disgusted how the employees reacted. The teenage boy was trying to explain that he only had positive intentions and began to cry when the manager refused to listen to him. This is what happens with staff members go on a power trip. If you see this post kid, I'm sorry for not speaking up and defending you. I was scared by the staff and their threat to call the cops. You have a good and brave heart. Don't let other people tell you other wise. Btw, prices here are outrageously high. Don't buy products here. read more

I had to beg for dialogue until someone suggested I email/call them. None of the 'players' were trying to 'calm' me down. They were all as confused as I was. They also just made a new burner account for damage control. The owner wasn't there and pretends as if he knows all the context through word of mouth against multiple witnesses that I didn't even get the pleasure to meet and conversate with before this all blew up. An employee kept coming in and 'yelling' (her word) at us that there were a few people that didn't check in every 10 mins. I went up to her as calmly as I could and said 'Hey some of these guys just didn't know. Let's put up a sign or something to let people know. I understand there were bad Yugioh players in the past, but let's have some faith. These guys aren't being malicious. I will also help by making sure anyone new coming in check in first.' She then thanked me and asked for my name. I didn't think about what that meant. Her senior then came in and was like 'Out. I heard you were being aggressive to our employees. You are banned. Please leave'. I was extremely confused. I was trying to help. I've already redirected a few people to the front for them. I tried telling him my side of the story but he wouldn't listen. Every time I try to say something, I get interrupted by the threat of the police. I didn't even get a chance to finish my sentence or apologize. This friendly guy that I've seen so many times and had conversations with just flipped a switch and went off on me. Conversations included talking down on Yugioh players and how terrible they were in the past. And I believed him! Now I'm starting to think the players were not the problem. I asked if I can talk civilly to them outside but they straight up said no. No one was willing to listen. I felt betrayed. I was trying to help. They lumped me with the bad Yugioh players from 6+ years back. This was my first time! I didn't want anyone unvaccinated in here either. A few other guys saw this injustice and left with me as I got kicked out. They charged me $5 entry fee and I have a lot of reward points with them I've accumulated from how much I frequent here. They refused to give me a refund. They overcharge for cards but I've always justified it by thinking I'm supporting local businesses and from how nice they were. I popped in to their Telegraph and Durant location a few weeks ago to give in to some nostalgia from my highschool years and walked out with a giant fuzzy stuffed hot sauce bottle which now lives on the couch. Their vast selection of absurd plush toys is unexpected, and delightful. Then last week I ran into some issues with a prop I'm working on and stepped in to check out their selection of model paints. I was directed to an employee named Will who has a downright encyclopedic knowledge of all things paint and prop related. Adhesion, opacity, chemical resistance, best practices, you name it. That man is a maven. They didn't have exactly what I needed for this step in the process, but now I know exactly what to do and once I've got the piece prepped and primed I'm coming back to get all my detailing supplies here. And if any of y'all are reading this: When you get another shipment of that liquid-latex masking media I will buy half a dozen of them. I owe you at least that much. Let me preface this by saying I really want to try and support local business as much as I can, within reason. I looked on Amazon to see how much I could get a D&D DM Guide, Handbook and Monster Manual for 5e. I also wanted to score some nice metal die sets and some caster cards as well. The prices were pretty good but thought, hey I'll just go to Berkeley and get them locally. Looks like a cool shop. When I got to Berkeley I actually found a parking space for my truck. I paid what felt like a dollar for 10 minutes so I dropped in a bunch of quarters for about 30 minutes and off I went, bleeding my change dry. The walk is pleasant and felt the same as it did 30 years ago when I used to hang here more often, although Fat Slice is closed which made me sad. Entering the store it's really cool. It took over the old Tower Records. It's big and spacious and nice interesting people work there. I went to the die sets and was surprised to see metal kits for $50 bucks. I was floored. What looked very similar if not the same as what I could get on Amazon for 18 bucks. I thought maybe this was a fluke and migrated to the books I needed to get newer 5e versions of. Each guide was $50 bucks as well, for something I can get for $28 on Amazon. I bought a few things, had some nice interaction with the people there and left. This was too much for me to spend even trying to support a local business. If rent is that much and you charge this much in what is a college community with college kids that don't have money, I'm surprised they can survive which sucks. To top it off I got back to my car and had a ticket. 4 minutes past the expiration time, which cost me $50 bucks. $50 bucks seems to be the theme of the day, and I'm going to buy the guides on Amazon and the metal dice, and pay the stupid ticket and still come out ahead from buying those things here. It's really a shame. There are some cool colorful people here and I really do want to spend money here, but not that bad. 3 books and a die set $200 at GoB 3 books and a die set for $110 online. The man at the front, a huskier fellow, asked me to put a mask on my under 2 child, which is not recommended and potentially dangerous. When I politely expressed this, he said he needed to do what was comfortable for him. 2.5 stars It really hurts me to write this review because this was one of my favorite shops to play Pokémon league at (pre-COVID-19) and buy cards as well. Me and my girl waited in line for an hour on Friday the 19th for the new Shining Fates pokemon cards. I saw one of the guys I knew that works there come out before they opened and I asked if they had them. He rudely said "yeah, we got Pokémon cards, but we are not open yet". I know, man. I'm just asking. I'm not sure but I think he's the owner. He's a huskier, older gentleman (is gentleman the right word for somebody that rude?) Another really nice guy did say he had the new cards. He's a much nicer person. When they opened, we went to go buy some Shining Fates products. Everything was almost triple retail price. Wow. I can't believe Games of Berkeley lowered themselves to that level, especially when their prices have always been really good. On top of that, the kid showing off the stuff told me to "hurry up". WTF? I did buy 2 products but I felt horrible about it. Needless to say I won't come to Games of Berkeley anymore. This is a great independent game store in downtown Berkeley for 30 years now. It has some plush toys, board games, video games, weird games, and a great collection of jigsaw puzzles. Need a plush toy for microbes, like the AIDS virus, Herpes virus, or the common cold? You can find it here! How about a jigsaw puzzle? I used to do 1,000 piece puzzles on occasion. How about 13,200 piece jigsaw puzzles, 10 feet long when fully assembled? WOW! I recall taking a 1,000 piece puzzle to a resort in Mexico many years ago, where you had your own casitas with your own private pool, breakfast pass-thru, and you never saw anybody. When you left for dinner or to go out on the town, people knew you were out, and they would clean your room and put fresh flower petals in your pool, and you would come back, and everything was clean, and you never saw anyone. Great privacy! It was relaxing, skinny dipping in your own pool daily. And to relax but still have a small challenge and feel some sense of empowerment and achievement between wonton skinny dipping, I would piece together a 1,000 pieces jigsaw. The goal was to finish it before I had to leave in 7 days. Now, I would probably have running games of Draw Something and Words with Friends on my iPhone. But maybe not, because the phone charges in Mexico would be prohibitive, and spotty! Check this place out if you need some unusual, or unique games and toys. The people at the desk are really engaging when talking to customers and to each other, and you can tell they love what they do. The store offers an abundance of cool plushies, minigames, die, and of course, games! I did some Christmas shopping here and scored a cute DnD desk figurine, a specialty pack of playing cards, and a beautiful board game. The prices, however, are pretty high here, so prepare to shell out around ~$40-100+ for a lot of their board games. One of a handful of shops still around since I went to school at Berkeley. It's a testament that small non chain retailers can still survive in this world of strip malls and fast food. The staff here is knowledgeable, the patrons range from nerdy to hip and the assortment of goodies is well planned. I've recently discovered Settlers of Catan - and shopping around found prices here comparable (even a few dollars less) than Barnes & Noble. In addition, they had someone who had played the games and could walk me through every expansion pack to explain the nuances and the differences. Try to find *that* level of service & knowledge at Target, Walmart or B&N! I was also amazed at the assortment of jigsaw puzzles they carry here. I'd been doing research a few months ago on a new and very challenging jigsaw puzzle and found much more variety here than I did after countless weeks of searching online. I reviewed Eudemonia a little bit ago and while I called that place "niche," Games of Berkeley is definitely more "mainstream." They've got all of the popular, non-children's board games here: Catan, Pandemic, a million Munchkin expansions, etc, etc. They also have an entire section dedicated to d20-based role playing games. Dungeons and Dragons, Conquest of Nerath, all of the accompanying figurines and coloring kits to boot. It's pretty impressive and they even have a person there at all times that you can ask for help/advice. If you can muster the courage to. In accordance with most reviews, the staff could be a little more cordial, or even look a little friendlier. Yes, I get it -- people who are experts in painting miniatures tend to not be the most social of people, but a smile or even just a friendly "dude head nod" goes a long way. It's not my scene, and maybe they can tell off just one glance that I'm just some filthy casual, but still. I like nerdy stuff too, you guys. Additionally, expect to pay a small premium on everything here -- it's box retail, after all. Still, nothing beats entering a store empty handed and leaving with a big ol' board game in your hands. It's a great place to bring families and friends, as they usually have an interactive game set up and there's a lot of eye candy (like the custom chess sets). I usually stop by every time I'm in the area just to see what's new. You can find just about any kind of game that you seek, from party to classic, strategy to just a deck of cards. They also have things such as puzzles, dice, novelty items and beyond. The staff are funny, kind, knowledgeable and helpful. If are looking for that one specific game and it is on the tip of your tongue, describe it. They can usually help you out with what it is. I have been frequenting this store for 25 years now, and have always been impressed by their helpful staff, great selection, and good layout. On a recent visit I made a bone-headed move and then had something exceptional happen. (TLDR: their customer service is incredible). I pre-ordered some gaming miniatures (or nerd monsters as my wife likes to call them), and when I arrived to grab them I informed the cashier they were pre-paid (they weren't). He searched the system and found no evidence of the payment, and even rang up some additional help to try and track down the problem. AT NO TIME did he put me on the defensive or suggest that he didn't trust me, and kindly helped me through the embarrassing situation. When he showed me the receipt from my last purchase it finally twigged that he was correct and I had gotten mixed up, I definitely owed them for the miniatures. But wait there's more! While reviewing my last purchase (he showed me his screen) I saw an item listed that I definitely hadn't purchased. I HAD purchased the smaller version, a delta of about $20. I felt bummed that I hadn't noticed at the time, but I certainly didn't expect them to reimburse me... it was two weeks ago, I didn't have any way to prove it, plus looney-tunes here had just spent 10 minutes claiming to have paid for something which I hadn't. I was amazed when just took my word for it and credited the difference on my current purchase. It was really quite astonishing, and it took a good retail experience into the realm of amazing. I LOVE this store, for so many reasons! I'm not what you would call a, "gamer", but find games interesting. Great eye catching packaging. Fascinating stories. The staff seem very knowledgeable about their products. Their helpful and so pleasant. This store also has a, "back room", where there are gamers gaming! The store carries greeting cards, whimsical buttons, coloring books, lovely jigsaw puzzles in all kinds of materials, marbles, Playing cards, etc., etc., In the middles of the store is the most awesome statue of a wizard! (See my picture of him). The store has a restroom that you can actually USE, not just, "For Employees Only". There is a lot of good energy here and you can spend as much time as you need to look around. I love this store. I was looking for a chess clock and couldn't find a single store in SF that was open after my working hours. I went to Games of Berkeley and got helped by a wonderful guy who was so courteous and patient with me that I ended up buying a pretty expensive one, which turned out to make my friend Marvin a very happy man. I send everyone there that has any gaming needs and look forward to taking my own grandchildren there when my kids finally give me some to spoil. About the grumpy food carrying shopper - never mind her, folks. Most of us would consume and then enter. Perhaps the store could use a nice sign out front that asks that food and drinks be consumed outside so that games can wait until they get to your house to get sticky. A gaming store is one of the last bastions of shopping for the intelligent people that like to play games. I have a couple of stores that I like to go to. This one, and a couple in Oakland. This is still my favorite because it is big and easy to reach and park. Plus you can't beat the friendly help you get when you are looking for something that you don't know jack about. I love this place! It has all the games you can possible think of! Service: The customer service here is always friendly, knowledgable, and just plain ole awesome. These guys really know their stuff! Products: They have tons and tons of products here. They have puzzles, board games, card games, Rubik's cube, and so many more! The only thing that is a con to this place is that they don't really specialize in one type of game. They have a nice variety of general games, but if you want something a little more in a specific gaming area, this isn't a good place to look. Wonderful gaming store in downtown Berkeley along Shattuck street! If you're a fan of: board games, miniatures, puzzles, magic tricks or card games, you must stop in for a visit. They have an impressively huge selection of everything from more high skilled board games to easy party pleasers. Friendly service and a three-day hold system where you can store an item for your next trip in. They can also set you up with gaming extras: dice, card protectors, etc. And they host gaming events directly from the store. It's hard to walk out of this store without a new gaming purchase, and I highly recommend a visit (or regular stop) if you're game-inclined! read more

Games of Berkeley is a GREAT store. We go often and always stop in, I always end up getting a new board game. I like that they have all the older classics and just fun easy quick games as well. The staff have always been so nice and ready to help. They really enjoy what they do and it shows. They are also VERY knowledgeable about many of the games they offer for sale and very good at asking what type of games I am interested in and making suggestions for the ones they know I would enjoy. You can go in and spend hours looking around. read more

Talk about rude! My friend and I were on a little date night and went in to explore Games of Berkeley after grabbing dinner. It's one of those places around Berkeley that everyone kind of knows of, but hasn't really ever been, ya know? We walked in and it was apparently 15 minutes to closing time (according to an employee), which seemed reasonable for us to look around for a bit. I guess it wasn't though in his mind. He was following us around for about two minutes and told us three separate time that we'd need to "hurry it up people cuz we're closing." It felt very uncomfortable to be told that, especially after having been followed around as we were looking. I was actually there searching for a christmas gift for a friend who loves board games. It left a very sour view of the place in my mind. I really like to support a local business, especially one so known as GOB, but I guess I'll have to go to target for this game. :/ read more
