So I went to two auto parts stores and two different hardware stores and nobody offered to help then I came here and didn't have to ask for assistance a gentlemen by the name of Lance asked me if I needed help finding what just what I needed he is the man ! Thanks again Lance btw because of you my pulley went on like a glove. My experience with Ganahl the past few months has been mixed. They are great in some areas but are seriously lacking customer/product consideration. 1st I had ordered 6x6 cedar for a pergola i was building. I called on estimated arrival date and asked if it was there, and I got a "yes". Showed up and it wasn't there. Few days later the same thing. Then sadly they brought out a wrong order to my rig, then they took it away before loading it because... again it wasn't my order. Very poor time management and communication skills at the desk and not so much the individuals working on the lot. Unfortunately driving across town on false promises amounts to wasted time/gas due to lack of consideration disorganization is disheartening and a-little disrespectful towards others time/projects. (July 2020) 2nd Same thing again. Was told few days prior shipment was coming in. I called and i asked specifically over the phone if some 6x2x16 cedar decking WAS IN because over the past few weeks it has been pretty vacant....the ones that where there had thick cracks in them or had considerable warping. Anyways, the lady on the phone assured me they had received an order that morning. I arrive to low and behold nothing at all. This despite the past week numerous employees telling me "tomorrow". One guy even telling me he promised tomorrow and a hole story about him being in trouble about it... its been 4 days and nothing. If they are aware of this issue like the guy sorta implied then why keep making up dates? Again - more time and money waisted showing up over false promises. SO- Before leaving today I asked when (againx4) when it was going to be in and the lady behind the counter said Monday quickly without really even really looking to double check. Seemed more like a gamble rather than trying to find the facts out. I don't like it when others gamble with hardworking peoples time. HOWEVER, i get that it may be extremely busy and perhaps things may be stressful at work with all the customer traffic but it's pretty really inconsiderate to stress and inconveniences on your customers when the time isn't takin to assure valid answers. In this day in age companies simply wont stay afloat when customers aren't considered. Customers dollars are what keep companies open in the first place. August 2020 3rd QUALITY paired to the PRICING. The quality of the wood is a gamble with special orders. Wood can be warped, have janky areas, or be considerably cracked. 240 dollars for a 6x6x10 cedar is somewhat reasonable ( bordering pricey compared to others). However, when it comes in with giant holes busted into the side of it.... well then it basically offsets the cost of what you paid for. Sadly, they haven't shown any signs of caring or working with customers regarding this predicament. It appears they just expect customers not to express themselves regarding frustrations at some capacity and that we don't have a place to question the obviously absurd pricing for broken wood. Go look first hand along all the loading docks will see all the bundles of wood that in which half are considerable warped. Id say this should at-least be slightly less common on an average level considering when you go to mass chains like home depot the wood always in better shape in Ganahl and slightly cheaper which adds up in the long run. Finally there are some variables id like to throw in. Its times of covid, they may have staff cuts even though demand is up, and other unknown/forseen situations that happen like RARE deliveries mishaps. No company can ever be perfect, especially ones that have so many moving parts. However, there are things here that could easily be changed/worked on amongst all of that. My 2 cents - increasing the awareness and valuing of its customers a little more. Aside, i've have pleasant experiences at Ganahl Lumber. There are many informative and helpful individuals working the floor. People in the yard transporting wood are generous with their time , kind while helping and very quick. Also they have a great selections of hardware and inventory that is wide ranging and not so much the typical monetized in couple of brands like Home Depot's set up. 3 stars seems reasonably considering everything. 3 stars for the positives/ benefit of the doubt's and NOT trying to act like I know how id run a company like this aside from the obvious's i mentioned that should be changed. However lacking 2 stars for the time/money/ energy wasted dealing with their disorganization, poor time management and lack of value towards the paying costumers. I hope Monday i'm lucky with the shipment or it will be just more hours wasted falling further and further behind on projects with many false promises of lumber. (again i wouldn't risk special orders due to the shape they come in sometimes). read more

For the small home projects Iv'e completed lately these guys are great. I was able to replace a piece of 1920 bead board on my ceiling I couldn't find elsewhere. Despite being smaller than a lot of big box stores they've what I've needed every time. I might say that I'm used to a bit of gruffness from these independent stores but that sure beats the unavailability and lack of knowledge I find in the big box world. I'm not a huge Yelper, but I felt the need to share my experience. I used to go to home depot a lot thinking that was a solid hardware store, until I found Ganahl. I was a kid in a candy shop. From all there different woods to varieties of tools, the thing that stood out the most to me was CUSTOMER SERVICE! I've had the privilege of being helped by Jose. Not only did he take the time to explain which type of wood would be best for my project, he helped with how much I would need, and cut them all to size all in a matter of about 15minutes! And this wasn't a tiny project. This guy is amazing. I'm definitely handing over my business to Ganahl not just for the great products that they carry, but for the amazing customer service and more importantly, hospitality I received. They're pretty good with price matching as well. Everyone at this Ganahl Lumber location is very kind and helpful. In particular, Javier helped me immensely in the paint department. He was very patient and thorough explaining staining in relation to various wood species as well as the many many MANY different types of stain. I purchase wood samples to take home and test stain. When Javier saw that in my cart, he offered to stain my sample wood to help me make a better educated decision. Anyway, based on my experience with Javier as well as the guys in the lumber department, I would highly recommend this store to everyone! He even had a small sample of cedar cut for me and stained it so I could see the finished product. I'm working on a remodeling project and was shopping around for quotes for doors & windows. I called Ganahl and was told the best way is to submit my schedule with all the specs through email. About 3 business days later I got quotes back from every place else I called except Ganahl. I called them for a followup and left a voicemail for the rep helping me out. Well it's been over 2 weeks and I've yet to hear back. Without a quote from Ganahl, I obviously decided to go with another vendor. I'm not sure what the issue is. My order isn't the biggest order - abut a dozen doors and eight windows. But it's either too big for Ganahl to handle or too small for them to care. It turns out I needed 1 more door that my vendor didn't have in stock. So I decided to give Ganahl another chance with this 1 door. I called and got a different sales associate in doors and he took down my specs. I was surprised when I got a quote back one day later. I was not so surprised that the door on the quote was not the size I asked for. Needless to say, I'm not shopping here any longer. read more

I went to this place thinking it was strictly just a lumber yard. I had no idea that it's almost comparable to home depot in size and scope. They need to advertise this aspect more as I think it would attract them more business. It has a very large outdoor/indoor lumber department and the hardware/tool section is very well stocked. The store is modern, CLEAN and I was immediately approached by an employee to help me. And then later approached by other employees asking if I needed help. This is by far the very best lumber yard/Hardware store ever, from concept to realization, this store is what should be the norm. I laugh about comparisons to Home Depot... not even close. These guys have tools that HD doesn't even know the name of, let alone what to do with them. I have read about the "Homeowners" that are unhappy with the customer service... I'm sorry about that, but why the hell did you go there? Hire a Contractor. Oh, so I guess you were going to buy the stuff, and get that dude on the corner to install it, right? Give me a break! When you act like a contractor, you need to know what your doing, it's not their fault if you order too much stuff. Why have I been going to Home Depot and OSH all these years? I shopped at Ganahl Lumber when I lived in Orange County, and for some reason I just never made it over to Ganahl in Pasadena until just recently . . . I will never go back to those other stores that sell junky stuff. Ganahl has everything you could get at the other places, but they offer better quality, a better selection, and much better customer services. Employees know what they're doing and seem to care about their work and yours. An added bonus for me was the NON-chauvinist attitudes of the employees. I may not be a contractor, but I'm also not a silly dingbat just doing errands for my husband. I appreciate being treated as an intelligent person who knows what she is doing with tools, paint, lumber, plumbing . . . whatever! WOW! I am not even sure what made me decide to look for a lumber yard in the first place but I am glad that I did. I have always been a Home Depot person. A few years ago I built a loft bed. My parent recently were kind enough to buy me a full size mattress so I was forced to widen my bed. I just needed bunch of 2x4's and some plywood. I just moved to Pasadena so I looked online and the closest home depot or lows was in Glendale. So I found Ganahl on yelp. Very clean and organized store. Very cute girl working the front counter. Very helpful service from all 4 employee's that I interacted with. Especially if you are buying lumber, this place is much better than home depot. They'll get your lumber for you, load it into your car, and cut it. (if you need that) This place is great! read more

So very clean. We're remodeling our kitchen and bathroom and we've been inside more Home Depots, OSH, and Sears than we care to remember. Walking into Ganahl Lumber has been like a breath of fresh air. Just so we're clear, I'm not the one doing the DIYing. I'm just following the hubby into these places so most the time, I'm bored out of my mind staring at different types of tools. It was very bright inside Ganahl. Lots of skylights that makes the place much more inviting and probably the sunlight kills all the bad BO germs left by all the burly men shopping inside. Also, the architectural designs are something to be admired. They have these giant beams on their ceiling that just makes the place look modern and beautiful. They seem to have put a lot of care into showing just what lumber can do in this place. Definitely much more pleasing to the eyes. I'm purely rating this place based on aesthetics. Apparently, they don't check stock before selling you material. I placed an order for material to build a fence and it showed up onsite short. They never bothered to notify me. Then when I called them, they said that they won't get it back in stock until the following week. Would have been great to know this at the time of order. Now I've got a bunch of dudes I'm paying to stand around because there's no material for the job. I usually don't use Ganahl and I've generally heard good things about them. But this is just an epic fail. I'm going to assume that this is just a one-time brain fart...but way to fuck up my job. read more

This place is all about customer service. I had some dining table legs that needed cutting. Manny, the employee who assisted me, was so helpful. After he cut the legs, he made sure that they all matched up in length and even put on the floor protector glides. Also, the store is sparkling clean and well organized. Home Depot should be ashamed. I come to ganahl mostly for anything that has to do with construction. No fee that Home Depot is good for day to day items that you may need but ganahl I feel is much better in quality and service. Came here on Thursday afternoon to buy red wood to build a table. First DIY project I'm undertaking. Edgar at the lumber yard was so incredibly patient and helpful with my questions. He showed me different options and never hurried me into any decision and was with me every step of the way. In comparison to Home Depot where it is ghost town in the lumber section, and every employee at the lumber section wants to run away from you. To get a cut or questions at HD is nearly impossible. Edgar then helped me cut all the wood to the specific measurements. I also came another day to pick up more wood for my table and was sad not to see Edgar there to help me. Fortunately it seems everyone there is out to help you as I bought 4 2x10 and needed them cut. When I went outside to look at the lumber, the guy told me that he was giving me the 2x13 because they 2x10 didn't look to good. Now that is awesome for me. Again, can't stress enough the high touch and professionalism of this place. New favorite place hands down. read more

We had the worst experience here. The guy helping us said we don't have samples for the different finishes for the doors. You choose the door you like from the floor, but you have to pick pick the stain/finish from the website. What a joke. He said we can't keep samples of each doors in every color that the doors come in. Who said anything about having the entire door there? At the least, you can have a tiny sample of each finish. Honestly, we needed 16 interior doors and 3 exterior doors and in my opinion, HE TOTALLY LOST OUR BUSINESS!!!! He refused to listen to what we were saying and kept repeating how that particular door was a common/typical wood spices. I think he said it over 15 times in five minutes. I look at my husband and said, so we have to pick 19 doors from a website? Let's get out of here and we sure did. I didn't get the workers name, but he did have a different walk. He truly needs to be retrained. He is missing the fundamental skills as a salesperson. Employees like that can destroy a company. Sorry, but I wish our experience was different. I'm sure he's a nice person, but what was coming out of his mouth was just insane. read more

He went above & beyond to pick out the wood & size I needed for him to cut. It's not only the work ethics he got, but his attitude & professionalism sure a great asset for the store. I had never heard of this place, but I was at Rockler looking for a special type of clamp. The gentleman helping me there suggested I try Ganahl instead. Pierre at Ganahl asked if we needed help, and I told him about the clamp we were looking for. He said they didn't have it, but walked me around the hardware aisles until he found the parts to build it myself, saying if it didn't work out I could bring everything back. That's already easily a five-star review in my book, but then because we said we'd never been there and asked about lumber, he walked us back to the lumber department and showed us where everything was. Also, the store itself was really well presented and clean, everything was easy to find, and everyone seemed pleasant and helpful. I stopped my project to write this review because I just finished putting the pieces for the clamp together, and it worked out beautifully. I probably saved money versus buying what I was actually looking for, and I definitely saved the frustration and time of trying to source the actual clamp. Thanks so much for your help, Pierre. Everyone is really helpful and friendly when we come here and I'm always pleased with the quality of the lumber/plywood I purchase. The pricing is on point as well and if they don't have things in stock, I've been able to call ahead and request the items, which arrive in store fairly quickly.
