TLDR: try the banana blossom salad Service was great and very kid friendly. We came for lunch and were blown away by the banana blossom salad. It had phenomenal flavors and a that "fresh" it factor that salads always go for. Tasted great over white rice too.

I didn't think I would like a new Vietnamese spot in Dorchester, but this place really hits the spot! The garlic butter sweet snail is what got me so hooked to this place! I soak the bread in the sauce and eat the vegetables with it. Then compliment it with their orange lemongrass peach tea which has been one of my new addiction -- so refreshing and not too sweet. I know lemongrass sounds weird at first but it's not too strong and is delicious! 100% Beef pho and chicken pho are also good, but doesn't come with a lot of meat. Banh cuon (steamed noodles) are so fresh, it makes a great lunch!

We go to Bale in Dorchester for the best Banh Mi's in all of Boston every year around this time. We decided to dine in for lunch prior to getting our sandwiches and this place has good reviews and their social media page looked appealing. Parking is tough in this part of Dorchester, but not impossible. Be careful as there are many sketchy people here, lock your car doors, keep valuables out of sight. The place looked clean and sizeable inside. The waitresses were all pretty friendly and made a point to explain which veggie dishes went with which order. They also had digital checkout experiences options upon paying for your order. The food here is good. The bun bo hue was tasty. Broth was garlicky and full of flavor. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the meat portions were adequate. There was a piece of pig blood (tastes like nothing to me) which I've not had in this dish from other places before. There was a cut of pig feet/knuckles which was interesting (tasted bland - had to dip in sauce). Overall, it was a 8/10 rating for me. The other dishes looked tasty and the family didn't complain about them. Pricing is about what you'd expect. The noodle dishes were between $16-$18, so a family of 4 can dine in and spend around $90 including tip, unless you get drinks and apps etc. What you need to know: This place specializes in noodle soups. If you're looking for the typical pork chop rice plate or dry vermicelli noodles dish, you won't find it here! I was disappointed to figure this out at the place. The food is still delicious, but if you are bringing a crowd that may need some variety, you may want to reconsider. The huge plus for this place is that it's walking distance to Bale for the best banh mi sandwiches.

Banh Cuon - Steamed Rice Rolls

From a personal level, I would rate the food 4/5 but given how authenticity, and flavorful the food is compared with restaurant in the area, this is one of my top choices for Vietnamese restaurants in Dorchester. Service is amazing! They all are super nice and attentive. Pretty crowder on a Sunday morning!

We had the bahn it , which are the steamed sticky rice dumplings, and the banh mi bo kho, which is a beef stew with banh mi bread. I loved the steamed sticky rice dumplings. They were chewy and the pork and shrimp filling inside complemented the chewy texture. Their homemade fish sauce was sweet and salty and paired well with the dumplings. I was a fan. The bo kho was also aromatic, but was missing the star anise-y flavor I typically expect from a bo kho. There was an ample amount of meat that was both tender and juicy. These were the off cuts, but they tasted premium. I also liked the pieces of tendon. The bread went perfectly with the broth. It was crunchy and soaked in that tasty broth. You can never go wrong with Vietnamese bread! The service and the ambiance were good. In the end, it was a good experience.

Steamed rice roll appetizer - the pink ham still had plastic wrap on it!

The short rib Bun Bo Hue was very good, the Pho was OK (kind of expensive) and the rice roll appetizer was fine but had a big issue. I'm giving a relatively high review because *my* dish was really good (the BBH). I came with ~6 people, so got to try some more dishes than just my own. First, we had the rice roll appetizer - it was fine - I wish there were a few more of each of the items next to the rolls since we were sharing, but that's our fault for not ordering more. However, there was a big issue - the spam-ish pink meat *still had the plastic wrap on it*! We weren't sure if it was an edible rice paper or something at first, but it was definitely just plastic wrap, and at least one of our party ate the plastic before we realized. I ordered the short rib BBH and they were able to make it less spicy (I am weak), and this dish was delicious. No complaints about it - the meat was tender, the noodles were great, and the soup was very flavorful. They gave plenty of bean sprouts and herbs, and overall it was great. I tried some pho from one of my friends, and it seemed like standard bowl of pho, so ~$15 seems expensive for it.

Bò Lúc Lắc - Vietnamese Shaking Beef

I came here and found that this place is quite cozy and spacious. Servers are friendly and patient. I ordered their shaking beef, bahn cuon, and lychee mint tea. Server is kind enough to ask if I want the food at the same time or appetizer first. Lychee mint tea is very refreshing with a hint of mint. Definitely get this!!! Rice rolls are delicious, not too soggy with right amount of beef fillings. Definitely ask for fresh chilly if you want more heat on it. Shaking beef with rice is also delicious, the beef sauce is subtle but still rich and flavorful. Overall very satisfied eating here and will return

A friend recommended Gao after we ran around M Street Beach and Castle Island and it was an elite post-run lunch. I wish I had multiple stomach so I could try more items but there's always next time. Gao is fairly laidback restaurant but is simple and clean. There were a few tables that were occupied at around 11:45 and a constant flow of takeout orders as well. Our server took our order within a few minutes after we sat down and I got banh cuon and bun bo bap & cha cua, with a iced limenaid to wash it all down. I took a sip of the limenaid and it was incredibly refreshing- I knew instantly that I've never had a better limenaid. This made me even more excited for the food to come and first up was the banh cuon which had mushrooms and pork inside and came with ham, herbs and a spring roll. The texture of the rice roll was perfect, it was thin but held together when picked up and the ingredients tasted very fresh and vibrant. I would've been very happy with just that but shortly after the bowl noodle soup came over. The steaming bowl of noodle soup took over my all my senses and I was quickly engulfed by the beefy aroma. It came with seafood meatballs, miscellaneous pieces of beef and a combination of herbs and noodles. The broth was beefy but not heavy at all, balanced out by herbs and a hint of seafood. I could not stop eating it, I almost finished the entire bowl including the broth. I highly recommend going to Gao and trying as many things as you can. The employees were so kind and helpful, it was a great meal after a run.

$15 for a bowl of pho ga! Broth was delicious. Just wished there was a bit more noodles and meat given. Servers were nice!

I've been to Gao a couple times and I've always had a great experience. There's plenty of tables and the staff is friendly. The restaurant is also very clean and it's not your typical Vietnamese restaurant. The menu isn't very expansive compared to other restaurants in the area, but there's still plenty of options. The food also comes out quickly. I think the flavors here are different from other Vietnamese restaurants in Dorchester, but it's still very good. Some of my favorite dishes include the rice noodles and the beef jerky salad!

    Fried spring rolls
    Joseph F.

One of my favorite Vietnamese spots. Unpretentious and casual. Perfect for a bowl of pho or some dumplings. What we got: - Fried spring rolls - these were great. They are definitely homemade. With pork and veggies. Great dipping sauce too. - Steamed rice rolls - some of the best I've had. I couldn't stop eating them. Texture was perfect. They come with bean sprouts, cucumber, meat loaf slices, and fried spring rolls. Maybe the favorite thing I've had on the menu. Definitely recommend. - Wonton soup - the dumplings were great. Soup had bok choy, lettuce, and pork in it. The broth had a very meaty flavor which was too overpowering for me, but some may like. Not my first time at GAO Kitchen, and it definitely won't be my last!

    Michelle P.

Staff is super friendly here. The coffee is really good. The soups are also good. Will have to come back to try more items.

Delicious, authentic Vietnamese food and great service!! Highly recommend their steamed rice rolls and Bun Bo Hue - so aromatic, well balanced and not overly salty. The crispy spring rolls were perfectly filled and fried. The guava jasmine tea was also surprisingly delightful and refreshing. Another delicious and well executed dish was their fish congee! So simple but so flavorful with nice slices of ginger and big chunks of fish. Finished the meal with the soft tofu dessert - the sweet ginger syrup paired perfectly.

I loved that the crispy rolls were vegan but it was very taro (or potato?) heavy and the taro was just slightly undercooked. Pork looked and tasted old with not much flavor and no grilled taste. It was the most disappointing part of the meal. I ended up just tossing the pork out and eating the rest, which was tolerable with the fish sauce. Wish the fish had some fresh herbs - it only came with noodles, iceberg, cucumber, peanuts, and pickled carrots and daikon. Also wished the veggies were all cut the same way for a better cohesion in texture. The lettuce pieces were kinda large and the cucumbers were sliced into discs rather than strips like everything else. Fast service, but would recommend the noodles. I did see lots of other people getting the sandwiches, which is probably what I should have ordered.

Phở Pasteur is a classic Vietnamese restaurant that focuses on traditional comfort dishes,…read moreespecially pho and other noodle soups. We walked into a casual, straightforward space that makes it the type of place you stop by for a quick, warm meal rather than a long dining experience. The atmosphere is nice with a busy, fast-paced energy that fits the style of food being served. The menu covers many Vietnamese staples, including different styles of pho, bun bo hue, rice dishes, and vermicelli bowls, giving plenty of options depending on what you are craving. The main draw here is the pho, but it landed a bit differently than expected. The broth had a lighter profile compared to other pho spots, with less of that deep, aromatic richness that usually makes the dish stand out. It was still enjoyable as a warm noodle soup, but the flavor felt a little more muted and did not have the same depth as some other Vietnamese restaurants nearby. The beef quality was solid, and the portions of noodles and meat were reasonable, but the broth is the part that makes the biggest difference in pho, and here it leaned more subtle than bold. Beyond pho, the menu offers a good selection of other Vietnamese dishes. The bun bo hue is a nice option if you prefer something with more spice and stronger flavors, while the rice and vermicelli dishes provide alternatives to the usual noodle soup. The restaurant also offers familiar sides and drinks like Thai iced tea, which pair naturally with the meal. Service is generally quick and the restaurant has a busy, efficient style, especially during peak hours. The staff handles the steady flow of customers well, and the food comes out without much delay. The location makes it convenient for a casual meal, but the fast pace can sometimes make the experience feel a little rushed. Prices are also a bit higher compared to some other Vietnamese restaurants, especially considering the portion size and the lighter broth profile, which may not feel like the best value for what you get. Phở Pasteur is a convenient option for Vietnamese food in the area, especially if you are looking for a quick bowl of pho. The food is solid, but compared to other pho spots, the lighter broth and higher pricing make it harder to stand out. It works well for a casual meal, though there are other places nearby that offer a more memorable pho experience. For a straightforward, no-fuss stop when you are in the neighborhood, it fills the gap, but it does not quite reach the level of a destination pho spot.

Because our party of three only ordered that amount, the staff pretty much ignored us for the rest of the night after taking the order. The awkwardness started the absolute second we sat down.
