Kimchi and Beef Tofu Soup
Jane V.

Small restaurant with not too wide of a menu. but still a nice place! Came here for the tofu soup obvi, and it was pretty good. Maybe a bit too salty for my liking so I would've given 5/5 if not for that. The rice they give you to eat with the soup is a tad bit undercooked but I think it goes well with the soup. Heck I think I'll start cooking my rice a tad bit undercooked if I'm eating soup. The japchae was good, nothing special but hey I still ate it up! A tad bit too greasy. Side dishes were very good, especially the bean sprouts. Can't go wrong with that. Wait staff were very nice. I don't think they checked on us once though.

Came for dinner on a weekday and there was a queue. Ended up understanding why because the food is delicious. While we were fourth in queue, they handed us a menu and then eventually took our order while clearing a table for us. Fast process, efficient, and friendly. Inside is a bit small and looks tight. Can be a bit loud with tables close together, but comfortable enough for dining. Primary downsides are potential wait and limited amount of banchan side dishes (4) but they do refill them promptly on request. Great service and again, efficient. We went with tofu soup combos and tried a variety of meats. Good value, fairly priced, and solid servings. By default, the tofu soups come with rice. They offer an insane variety of tofu soups including intestine as a unique option in addition to the basics, so there's something for everyone. Of the four proteins we picked, I'd rank in order galbi, pork belly, spicy pork, and lastly bulgogi. The latter two were pretty basic, but are always consistent and tasty. Galbi had a great flavor, perfect balance of sweet, savory, and salty. Was also a fantastic crispiness. Pork belly was fatty, crispy, and just melted with the sesame oil on the side.

I've come here several times now over the past few months and have never had a bad experience - overall, food is solid and service is efficient as well as relatively attentive. We've never had to wait whenever coming by, albeit we usually come on weekdays for dinner so it's not too busy. The decor inside is pretty homey and it's a nice space to spend a meal. Menu has a good mix of selections, however I've always gotten the combo that's a large soup and medium meat portion as it's a great quantity and quality mix. From the choices, I've gotten the kimchi + pork soup, medium, and samgyupsal (pork belly). The consistency of spice honestly has varied a lot every time I go so I recommend just staying in the middle since you have no idea where it'll land. The meat is typically a little overcooked for some pieces, but in general is solid. Every entree comes with rice as well and the soup gets an egg for free. Overall, Kaju is a solid Korean spot in Allston and is my choice for soondubu (tofu soup). If you're craving warm soup and tasty side dishes + meat options, Kaju is a greatly option!

Great tofu soups! Very cozy place with a simple theme, generally fast service. On of my favorite places in Allston for a one on one meal (you'll have to wait ages for a group).

It was absolutely packed, but tables move fast so we were able to get a seat in like 10 minutes. It is very crowded, though, so just that in mind if you expect more than a foot between you and other patrons. It was somewhat loud, naturally. For came out really fast. The side dishes were great. The galbi was tender and flavorful. The chicken was sweet, but not particularly spicy. The mushroom tofu soup was ok.

This is my favorite tofu soup place in Boston and I've been coming here for 10years. There's almost always a line during dinner time but it's always worth the wait. Like the name suggests, they specialize in tofu soup but the bibimbap is delicious as well. When I'm very hungry, I opt for the combo with comes with a smaller soup plus grilled meat of your choice. I always get the kalbi or pork belly.

I had a great visit to this restaurant. Their specialty is tofu soup so i highly recommend trying this soup!! The food came super fast and it was very fresh and tasty. The tofu was super soft and silken. The portions were large! The soup literally arrived steaming hot which made a great impression. This Korean food is comparable to food I've had in SF and in Houston!

Tofu house is great on a cold, wet day. It was packed to the walls per usual, and it's honestly a method to getting a table which is find the man with the tablet and make sure they know you there and waiting for table. Luckily the gentleman remembered us today so about 20 min wait. We preordered with the staff prior to being seated (that's how they keep the tables moving). We got kalbi + seafood tofu soup spicy Spicy pork bulgogi + seafood tofu soup spicy Kalbi + dumpling tofu soup mild (cause our bro can't do a drop of spice) This time around was much better then the last time we stopped in (yes we are frequenters) The kalbi was super tasty, marinated to perfection and cooked well, fall off bone basically. Meat was tender! The pork bulgogi (spicy) had much better meat to veggie ratio then the last couple times so it makes your meal feel better worth the money. Great flavor today but kalbi was the star. The soup. Instant cough and head sweat level. It was hot tasty and had PLENTY of tofu! The seafood was shrimp clam and oysters. Aside from the fight to get the tables, staff was great today, tried their fastest to get people in and out! Appreciated! Will be back again!

Came at 5:15 on a Saturday evening for an early dinner with a party of four. We were promptly seated and our orders were taken. The wait staff was very helpful and walked us through any questions we had about the menu. We had the barbecue chicken, chicken clay pot, and the beef bulgogi bowl all of which were immensely flavorful. We'll definitely be coming back to try their other dishes. Recommend trying this place out if you're in the area!

Stopped by this restaurant since I was craving tofu soup and galbi. Service was straightforward, nothing fancy, but they bring you what you need. We ordered a few dishes to try: Tteokbokki with cheese - Unfortunately, this one really missed the mark. The rice cakes were way overcooked and fell apart when I picked them up with chopsticks, and there were barely any fish cakes (maybe two pieces total). We ended up leaving most of it. Definitely not something I'd recommend. Galbi - This was much better. Nicely marinated with good flavors, quality meat, and a solid portion size. Seafood and beef tofu soup - The star of the meal for me. Very flavorful, hearty, and exactly what I was craving. The space is small and tight so all the tables are very close to each other, which I am not a fan of. Felt quite uncomfortable of how close you are to the next table. If I come back, I'd probably just stick to the galbi and tofu soup. Both were satisfying and worth ordering again.

This place is good! Decent sized dining area and lots of metered street parking spaces outside. Could be easy or difficult to find a parking spot depending on day and time. The restaurant is decent sized and seems clean enough. Staff was friendly. Menu had decent variety. Food comes with side dishes, for which you could ask for more of if you want. Seafood pancake had little seafood and wasn't as crispy as I'd like, but still tasty. That sauce they give you in a bottle is like crack...sooo good with everything! bulgogi clay pot was yummy and the rice on the edge was burnt and crispy. The soups were okay. Pricing is about what you'd expect.

Bulgogi

Solid Korean food! The combos of tofu stew and a bbq meat is a good deal. I tried the combo with spicy chicken and beef calamari tofu stew. The spicy chicken was tender and flavorful. The tofu stew was yummy too. We also tried the bulgogi but it was a little dry. I preferred the spicy chicken. The banchan were good too and there was friendly service. Overall a good spot to go to.

We found KChickin nearby on Peterborough Street and they're open until 9:30pm. We walked quickly over as hunger is a good motivator to walk fast. The restaurant has takeout but offered enough space to hold three famished Fenway newbies. Service was quickly and friendly and the food was served fairly quickly. Seems like most restaurants begin at the suggested 18% tip to start. Some calculate their tipping suggestions at your subtotal before adding the taxes to your bill. This restaurant included the taxes as part of its tip calculation so be aware that you're actually tipping more than 18%. FYI: as a customer, you decide how much to tip for quality service. Bringing your orders to your table is basic. How many times they filled your water cups and check up on you are important and expected. Tipping is not automatic in my humble opinion. Servers who work diligently for their tips so tip accordingly to those who provided a great dining experience.

KChickin is one of those places that earns its high rating without much argument. We walked into a…read morespace that buzzes even on weeknight evenings, with a menu spanning Korean fried chicken, sushi, hand rolls, and Japanese comfort food. That combination sounds like it could go sideways, but the kitchen handles the range with enough confidence that the whole thing works. The fried chicken is the anchor of the menu and the reason most people come back. We ordered the soy garlic wings, the most talked about item, and they justified the reputation. They came out freshly fried with a glaze that coated evenly and a crunch that held. The chili basil version is worth ordering alongside if you want some heat, and the classic crispy is the right call for anyone who wants to taste the chicken itself without much interference. The calamari is a strong starter, well fried and light enough that it did not weigh down the rest of the meal before it got going. On the Japanese side of the menu, the kaisen don stood out. The presentation was careful and the fish was fresh in a way that made it feel like a dish the kitchen takes seriously rather than an afterthought. The hand rolls are solid and satisfying, though they lean more reliable than revelatory, making them a good addition to a larger spread rather than the sole reason to visit. For a spot covering this much ground, the consistency impressed us most. People drive over an hour to eat here, and that says something. It earns the trip. We would come back for the soy garlic wings and a bowl of kimchi tofu soup, and we would bring friends who want both Korean fried chicken and fresh sushi under one roof.

Most Americanized Korean places wouldn't have the first two, so we felt this was a good sign. Both the soups were legitimately neutral, and we were each given ramekins of rock salt. The sullongtang had ample pieces of beef, rice noodles (odd that they don't use vermicelli though) and was covered with green onions. Definitely not as good as something like LA's Han Bat Shul Long Tang, but that would be an unfair comparison! The samgyetang was decently sized, a good fresh meaty chicken. It was stuffed with rice (but not mochi rice), garlic, and dates. We left feeling content and accomplished. For decades, Boston's only Korean options were Koreana or Japanese/Korean places like Gyuhama, and this is far better (and more reasonable) than those. The service was fantastic too, nice job Hanna.

It was a bit weird to me they didn't serve anything with rice. Scallop was great, super fresh, and had a delicious sauce with it. Japchae and mung bean pancake I thought were just ok. Kalbi was super soft and tender with a delicious broth (though again, rice?). The samgyetang was something really special with the sweet rice on the bottom of the soup. It definitely felt more elevated compared to the banchan from other Korean establishments. The marinated shrimp, scallop and japchae came next. The japchae and scallop were my favorite bites of the night. Then there were 2 meat dishes, pancake and then finally the chicken soup. The chicken soup was also very good and had so much flavor. I would come back again for the banchan, japchae and chicken soup again. I do have a few criticisms on the meal. For a set meal, I don't think it was present in the most enjoyable order. The pancake came in right before the final dish of the chicken soup. The flavor and texture wasn't very good and felt so out of place as everything else was so well done. If it was brought way earlier, I wouldn't have a second thought on it. But it felt off putting being the second to last dish. Also we were a bit thrown off by just the pacing of everything. You would think that you eat the banchan along with your mains, but it more felt like you needed to finish them sooner given the limited table space. The last thing is the chicken soup is brought way too late into the meal. It's essentially the main part of the meal, but is brought in last after you finish most things. I'm a big guy and can eat a lot, but I was full by the time it came out. Despite what I wrote above, the food was amazing and so eloquently made and presented.

We ordered the cheese topokki (soft rice cake, fish cake, vegetable, & mozzarella in Korean spicy sauce) & the beef bulgogi bowl (fried marinated beef, vegetables, steamed rice & side of soup). The cheese topokki was just as good as we remembered - chewy, flavorful, comforting, & a little bit weird. The cheese was poorly distributed, but it was still very tasty. The beef bulgogi bowl was really underwhelming. Firstly, it was very little food. We were promised vegetables, but there were only a few scarce onions & zucchini pieces mixed in. It was also dry. It was devoid of moisture & sauce, so we added some from the fridge at home. The side of soup was a joke. It filled only about 2/3 of the container & looked so sad, we wondered if it was the sauce that we we so desperately needed. Nope, just a meager amount of watered down miso soup. So the conclusion - great topokki, sub-par bulgogi, non-existent soup.
