To preface, I only had the sausage and bacon claypot...I didn't like it flat out. The ingredients weren't cooked with the rice. It tasted like they were placed on top. That's where the beautiful aromatic flavors marry with the rice and what makes the entire dish. The aromatics were very few as well. I am truly hesitant to try other things because of my experience with their claypot and maybe it was just the specific dish but it just wasn't shown the care. First off, let me preface this that so far Chinese food in Boston is really disappointing compared to the San Francisco Bay Area where I'm from. So mind you, I was super surprised by this place. We had my brother's friend and my husband too so this was for a party of 6. We also ordered their sauteed lettuce, soup dumplings and their house chicken. Their house chicken is to die for. Oh my lord is it good. Their sauteed lettuce was pretty good too. The only one that fell really flat was the soup dumplings. Pretty sure they're frozen ones...and they kept ripping/sticking to the paper under them...on top of being way too close to each other that they all stuck. Um...yeah, hard pass on that next time. But the claypot rice is absolutely delicious. Add the claypot rice soy sauce and you're golden. Only thing that was different and this is more of a personal preference...less ginger? I know ginger is needed but having small planks of them showing up is a bit much. Minced maybe? Even strip to pick out is fine. But happily eating claypot rice only to bite into a piece of ginger is not so nice. The only claypot rice I didn't care much for was the preserved duck...it's not really my thing. My brother ordered it but I prefer normal roast duck to preserved. Tasted kind of weird. Still, lot of good food here. Started off with the milk tea and it was decent. The milk tea was smooth and not too sweet. I've had better in Asia. The staff came by with some complimentary hot and sour soup. Opted for the pea sprouts stir fried with garlic and it was a gigantic portion. The pea sprouts were decently stir-fried. Moved on to the salt and pepper chicken wings and they were ok. Came here for a late lunch/ early dinner on a Sunday and the place was relatively empty as it was an odd time for a meal and it was pouring rain outside. Nonetheless, there were a few tables aside from ours and the interior was very clean and modern. Parking in the area is pretty easy as there are plenty of meter parking spots. The menu had a good selection without being overwhelming. We ended up ordering Eel clay pot rice, stir-fried string beans, half house chicken and seafood w tofu in claypot. I enjoyed all the dishes but the half house chicken and eel clay pot rice have got to be my favorites. I liked the stir-fried string beans as well but found it a bit saltier than I was used to and the seafood w tofu felt very saucy thought still pretty good. Our server recommended that we order one more when we had only ordered three initially without the seafood w tofu because she said everything was one serving size. However, I think we could have done without the fourth dish. Located in the old baby cafe spot, they reworked the space to have tables and chairs rather than booths. This is a decent option in the Brookline area if you do not want to go to Chinatown for claypot rice. The eel claypot rice ($20 w/o tax) is seasoned and comes with a soft egg on top. The oozy yoke is a decadent addition to the rich eel. Pro tip: Make sure that you start stirring from the bottom to the top so that the crispy rice bottom (socarrat) is mixed in with the soft rice. This gives it texture and interest. The salt and pepper pork chop ($15 w/o tax) is crispy and not porky at all. The beef chow foon ($15 w/o tax) is a bit too oily. This place reminded me of the restaurants in NYC Chinatown. They even offered milk tea with coffee! I haven't seen that since my NYC Chinatown bakery days. The place gets busy but the turnover is somewhat quick. Luckily we got seated right away. The staff are very nice. My wife ordered a hot and sour soup and they brought me one as well just "to try" which is very nice of them. The soup dumpling was good and juicy the congee was seasoned perfectly. The only issue I had was the egg was cut into big chunks. I prefer it as smaller pieces. The clay pot rice was a banger too with the crispy rice on the bottom. I came here before a Shakira concert and it turned out to be the perfect meal. The salted egg yolk soft shell crab was easily my favoritel! The crabs were coated in a rich salted egg yolk sauce that wasn't too heavy. Came here on a Friday evening and was seated immediately. There are a ton of Asian restaurants in the St. Mary's area popping up lately, so it was busy but we were happy to have a table quickly. I ordered the Chinese Sausage and Bacon Claypot and it was solid. I do wish that the rice had crisped up a bit more on the bottom, as I didn't get a ton of crispy portions, but the sausage and pork belly were both very flavorful and the rice was cooked well. Another thing I will say is that I also wish the sauces on the table were labeled. There was a chili oil that we added that had a nice flavorful chili flavor without being too hot, and there was a brown sauce that we couldn't identify so we didn't use it much. When we were leaving, we saw other tables had it labeled as "claypot sauce" and if we knew that we may have tried it more since the claypot itself didn't have a ton of sauce in it. Still, it was a solid porky bowl of rice, and the serving size was enormous. Even with the competition and just opening, Big Fun Claypot may be a new favorite in the area for Asian cuisine. As the name implies, most food is a combination of a savory protein served over rice in a claypot. The pot is heated and creates a flavorful, crispy rice texture on the bottom and sides. Would highly recommend trying various protein as the heat and sauce or fat create different, delicious flavors in the rice. Service was very friendly and efficient. The restaurant was having a soft opening promo (15% off the bill) and all the service staff were friendly and attentive. Food also came out hot and fresh, an FYI though they bring out dishes as they are done so that the texture and food is all warm. A really good option and works well for family style meals. The food took a bit longer than expected to come out, but this wasn't too bothersome. We tried one of their clay pot dishes and although it looked simpler, it was so crispy and delicious. Scraping off the rice from the pot gave it a wonderfully crisp texture! I also really enjoyed their chicken feet due to how easily the skin fell off the bone and the delicious sauce. I got the spare rib clay pot and that was delicious. The bone is in some of the meat pieces, as a heads up, but they are pretty clear. The rice was delicious and crispy at the bottom. I also got hot milk tea which I wish was served in a mug or something instead of a take out cup, but it was delicious. Make sure you stir the milk tea if you get it!! We ordered the pick 2 items claypot with chicken and spareribs, the beef brisket with radish claypot, and the watercress with preserved egg in supreme broth. The beef brisket was piping hot and delicious, though the portion was very small for $26. The watercress was refreshing and another highlight of the meal. Honestly, everything here is good. Parking can be tough, but it's absolutely worth it. Our must-order is the salt and pepper combo--my favorite mix is pork, shrimp, and squid. A good Claypot restaurant that took over the rice roll place in Brookline on beacon Street. I came here for dinner with a friend on a Thursday night. The restaurant wasn't too busy, but there were a few other parties dining in as well. We decided on the Chinese sausage & bacon Claypot and the chicken and mushroom Claypot. The server told us the Claypot is about 2 bowls of rice, so if you could definitely get one to share is you have a bigger group. We also got a small vegetable side dish which was perfect accompaniment to the meal. I also ordered a house made hot soy milk, which wasn't too sweet. The food service didn't take too long to come out, but you might want to let your Claypot sit a little longer to get that crispier bottom. There's sauce on every table to add to the rice since it can be pretty bland without it. It took us a while to flag down a server to get out check and take out boxes. Big Fun Claypot in Brookline is one of my favorite new restaurants to open recently. I've been there four times since the middle of September. The wait is minimal to none, the servers are knowledgeable and friendly, and the restaurant is well lit and not noisy like most restaurants are today. So far I've had the following: Yang chow fried rice, salt and pepper chicken wings, salt and pepper pork chops. They were all excellent. I have to say the House Chicken, Five flavors duck, and Beef Chow Fun were amazing. I can't wait to go back to actually have the Claypot. My favorite is the salty and spicy combo that let you choose between 1-3 items, I always get that and eat with white rice, that dish they made so well! I've tried a lot of their dishes both in restaurant and order through uber eats, they also have a lunch deal menu in restaurant, besides the salt and spicy thing I like, I've tried all their claypot options except for the eels and they are all very well, a couple of other entree like chicken or veggies options are all very good. Absolutely exceeded expectations! Big Fun Clay Pot is a new restaurant (just about two months old, since Sep 2025) but it's already one of the best clay pot places I've tried, even compared to the ones I've had in Asia. The clay pots are authentic, freshly made, and full of variety. I especially loved the Chinese sausage and bacon combination, incredibly flavorful. We came here for a family gathering and the experience was fantastic. The space is modern, clean, and surprisingly spacious, with very comfortable seating. We also ordered the duck, chicken, beef brisket rice rolls and noodles, everything was delicious and there's something for everyone. Special shout-out to the service team, everyone was warm and attentive. And the owner, Hao, was amazing. He's very hands-on, came by to greet customers, and made us feel genuinely welcome. THIS is the worst Chinese restaurant I have visited in Boston in 40 years. The hot and sour soup and shrimp shumai were ok but the chicken claypot with black mushrooms and Singapore noodles were awful. I actually threw out the initial portions I tried to eat and I did not eat the rest. The total cost was $62 on Uber eats and a total waste of money. I lived in Singapore for 10y and it has the best food. This was not it. Shun it - stay away. read more
