I recently had a problem with a 13 year old garage door. The door was not closing or opening all of the way and it was emitting a loud metallic squeeking noise. I started a project on Yelp and contacted the Garage Door Doctor. I explained the problem to Alex and he scheduled an appointment for the next day. The service person Danny contacted me to confirm the time and was prompt on keeping the appointment. I discovered that he had serviced my neighbors garage door, coincidentally, many years ago. I also found a friend who had reviewed their business about a year ago. That was comforting to know. Danny diagnosed the problem and suggested to replace the spring, that the initially installed tracks were misaligned on a roller type garage door, and the existing opener motor was too weak to open and close the door (screw drive Genie). I haven't reviewed a business in a very long time, but I will bust out the laptop for Garage Door Doctor! Today, I had the very unfortunate incident of the master arm of my garage door breaking as I was about to leave on an errand. There was a loud bang, a "what the...", and immediate groans while taking photos of the garage door hanging half open. I quickly found out that this was a homeowner issue, not the HOAs, so I took to Yelp and almost immediately found Garage Door Doctor. I called and spoke with Alex, to whom I explained my conundrum. He understood the urgency of my situation and said he will check with his team to see who will be available to come out to me. In the meanwhile, I texted him pictures of the damage and my address. Once confirmed, Alex texted me back that Danny will be on the way in less than 10 minutes. Danny showed up shortly after, took assessment of the situation, and let me know that the hinge hardware would need to be replaced ($1500) and could be done in a couple hours. My husband and I also asked to replace the springs since we didn't know how old they were, and they were $60/spring. True to his estimate, Danny and his partner worked efficiently and called for me in a couple hours to get the garage remote and test it out. They asked me to move the car out first (and they did a great job not letting the door fall on my poor trapped car). After a few open/close cycles, they made some adjustments and pointed out the structural shifts that's causing rubbing. If you are looking for an honest, reliable, reasonably priced, and friendly garage door installers or servicers, look no further. Alex and Danny are knowledgeable, professional, and competent. There is no reason to take your chances on unscrupulous garage door companies. I almost made that mistake. Alex installed my garage door in 2012 in Seal Beach and he has helped me with minor service over the years. I have a very heavy garage door and so far, I only had to replace the torsion springs and sensors. I recently had intermittent trouble with my garage door not closing. Alex was not available, so I called another company for a "free" inspection. The company came out and tried to sell me different packages to replace all the hardware on my garage door because they said they were "worn" and needed replacing. The garage door "refresh" was over $2000 and that didn't include a new opener. The other package was over $3000! What a rip off! I was skeptical so I didn't go with this company. I called Alex and he came out, did an inspection and said I didn't need to replace any parts unless I wanted to spend money. It is so refreshing to have a guy like Alex to be so honest and helpful. One of those moments when Yelp let me down. I had accidentally stacked some boxes too high, and when the garage door closed, it caught on them--causing the cable on one side to come undone (see Picture 1). Wanting to support a local business, I chose Garage Door Doctor based on their stellar reviews--and because they could send someone out the same day. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. The technician, Daniel, spent a couple of hours working on the door before admitting he couldn't figure out the issue. He suggested the motor was likely defective and advised me to contact the manufacturer to check if it was under warranty. Despite not resolving the problem and leaving me with a garage door that could only be opened manually, he still charged the full price--claiming the cable had been fixed and the remaining issue was with the motor. That didn't sit right with me. I expected a working garage door, not a halfway job. When I spoke with the owner, he insisted the cable repair and motor issue were "two separate jobs" and said they had no way of knowing if the motor worked beforehand. I disagreed but paid the $195 in good faith. Two days later, I hired a second technician. He quickly identified several issues: The cable had been installed on the wrong side (Picture 2) The cable wasn't aligned properly on the drum The torsion assembly was off The motor limits needed adjustment, which caused a gap in the right corner when the door closed (Pictures 3, 4, and 6) He also pointed out that if the motor had truly been suspected as defective, Garage Door Doctor could've easily called the manufacturer, Guardian--whose number and manual were readily available. He made the call himself and resolved the issue in minutes. The total cost? $129. When I updated Garage Door Doctor, the owner asked why I didn't call them back. The answer is simple: they couldn't get it right the first time, and I needed the door fixed. After some back and forth, he said he wanted to make things right and offered a refund--but asked me to wait a week to confirm everything was working (Pictures 5 and 7). I messaged him on 5/29. The message was read, but as of today (6/2), I've received no response. That silence speaks volumes. As a business owner myself, I understand the importance of customer service. I don't leave negative reviews lightly. But when a company is given the opportunity to make things right and chooses not to, I'm left with no choice. The weatherstripping came loose from the bottom of my garage door and the channel that holds it was hanging down. I called Garage Door Doctor to see if they could help me with this. I spoke with Danny and, after sending him some pictures, he said he could fix it and gave me a price which I thought was reasonable. I asked Danny if the price included everything, including installation, and he said it did. We were able to arrange a time for the repair within 2 days. On the day of the repair, Daniel arrived and introduced himself as related to Danny. He was very friendly and got right to work. He did a very good job and I was pleased with the repair. My only disappointment, and the reason for the 3 stars, is that Daniel charged me $110 more than the quote Danny had given me. I told Daniel of the quote from Danny, and he said that Danny's quote did not include everything. Reluctantly, I paid the full price, including the extra $110. Overall, I am happy with the service I was provided, and the repair looks good. However, I feel like was taken advantage of. I had such a wonderful experience with Alex and Danny. I have a new teen driver and he cut the wheel too soon and hit the rails on our garage.
