Mind you, I have enjoyed many a meal in this gorgeous space in the past, when it was the hotel's signature all-day restaurant named Caldo Verde from chef Suzanne Goin. With her departure, the space got a new name, revamped menu, and now just serves breakfast. Other meals can be had on-site at the rooftop Cara Cara. My last meal at Cabrillo was actually last fall during a rainy spell when the Cara Cara menu was being served here due to the weather. I recognized my server, Carlitos, who has been with the restaurant since the hotel opened. The menu was and still is a bit bougie, certainly not your "basic diner" or prefab Holiday Inn Express breakfast buffet. I ordered the Proper Breakfast--eggs, potatoes or tomatoes, an arugula salad and toast--and it was very good. Note there is only one omelette choice (oyster mushroom), and not every egg dish comes with potatoes and/or toast. The pecan sticky bun I've had in the past is also nice. Service was a bit sparse at first because they were setting up for an event in the Dahlia space. Overall a fine and convenient breakfast choice, especially for hotel guests. Other nearby options are Moonlark's Dinette at the Hoxton Hotel across the street, and Pine and Crane, a Taiwanese spot that's a fave of mine for any meal.

Take a look at the picture, and you can see the cheesecake surrounded by a supporting cast of cream, strawberries, and blueberries. The cheesecake itself was again, super smooth, creamy, not too sweet, and a perfect taste of pistachio. Oh, and the ambiance of the place is really delightful as well. It's pretty intimate, not too loud, and overlooks the pool area of the hotel, which is quite elegant but not stuffy. Service was excellent even though it was a comped dessert from the hotel. I hope we end up trying their regular menu. They had some great looking pizzas. I suspect they interpret the Margherita pizza as well as they did these desserts.

The restaurant is set inside Hotel Per La, the former 1920s Bank of Italy building in Downtown LA, and they've kept all that stunning historic character, detailed ceilings and classic grandeur that make the whole space feel incredible the moment you walk in. (Honestly, it's easily my favorite find so far this year.) The food was just as memorable as the atmosphere: Roman Artichokes: Started off with these, and they blew me away. They nailed the texture (super crispy on the outside, but still rich and "meaty" in the middle). Pork Chop: I haven't had a pork chop this good in a really long time. The coffee marinade gave it such a deep flavor, the grill on it was spot on, and that mustard agrodolce on top added the perfect sweet-and-tangy balance. Tiramisu: Wrapped up the night with dessert, and it was a classic finish. From the gorgeous space to every single dish, the whole experience was fantastic. I finally was able to check it off, thanks to a hotel offer with a dining credit. Dahlia is the gorgeous petite space behind the larger ground floor restaurant space now called Cabrillo (formerly Caldo Verde). Dahlia opened as a bespoke cocktail lounge, then began to offer tea. Now it's just tea. There are five 2-tops and two 4-top tables. All food and beverage venues at the Proper used to be under the auspices of famed chef Suzanne Goin and her business partner/sommelier Caroline Styne. They are no longer affiliated with the Proper, but many of their dishes/contributions remain. The last named vestige of them is on the tea menu, "Suzanne's Deviled-Egg Sandwich". The tea menu has several options: Classic, with a seasonal mocktail, or with different champagnes. I opted for the Classic experience, because the mocktail had mocha, not my fave. Server Lluvia was clearly a Dahlia veteran; she offered a tea-smelling of all the teas that interested me as well as crowd favourites. I ultimately chose one of these faves, Mad Hatter's Tea Party, which had passionfruit and vanilla. I declined milk/cream, but did get lemon. There were rock sugar sticks on the table. It seems the selection of tea sandwiches and sweet treats changes every so often, although the vanilla bean scone, dried currant scone, Devonshire cream and apricot orange jam seem like constants. The sandwich selection at my visit were: cucumber, crab/creme fraiche, beet hummus on pita, smoked salmon and Suzanne's deviled egg. All were delish, the beet, crab and deviled egg especially. The sweet treats were: orange fig butter cookie, spiced apple brown butter crumble, cranberry frangipane hand pie, chocolate mocha macaron, pumpkin madeleine, plus the 2 scones. All were excellent. There were no leftovers. A bit pricey, but a relaxing and lovely experience. The room was not crowded when I visited, adding to the calmness of my visit.
