    Special Valentines menu
    Chelsea H.

I'm on a mission to support some local coffee shops and find my perfect cup! I usually shoot for an afternoon pick me up once or twice a week and Garden Route's Valentines menu really caught my attention! I tried "The One" a white chocolate latte with strawberry. It was very smooth, sweet, and a mild coffee flavor. I personally am a fan of a strong and bitter coffee flavor especially if paired with milk and sugar. I did some reading and they specifically use South African coffee that is not as bitter and more smooth. This would be perfect for those who don't love that strong coffee taste. I really think I'd enjoy this style coffee a little less sweet, and will surely be back to explore the menu. My friend also liked (not loved) her latte. I am hopeful to find a more fitting drink for me so I can change this to a 5 star review. This place has changed a lot since the last time I was there. They now have a drive thru (hello game changer), outdoor seating, expanded indoor seating, pastries, and an assortment of coffees, teas, and smoothies! They also sell small items from what seemed to be local artist such as homemade earrings, keychains, bath products. Customer service was top notch! Very clean and cute interior too.

The cake was moist and the pudding frosting was creamy and delicious. It was a HUGE hit with all of the guests! Julia Child once said, "A party without cake is just a meeting." I think WitsEnd Bakery's purpose…read moreis to ensure more of our days are filled with parties. This artisan bakery has undergone all health and department of agriculture inspections and been approved to prepare baked goods for wholesale and private sale. If you've never ordered a cake from a home bakery, we will walk you through the process we followed step by step. For our family, it started with deciding what type of cake my mom would like for her birthday, my dad would like for his birthday, and both parents would enjoy for their anniversary. My parents love old fashioned layer cakes with mountains of airy frosting. We browsed the photos and list of cake flavors in the Notes section on the WitsEnd Facebook page. Mom decided upon a coconut cake for her birthday. This was no ordinary coconut cake. Dubbed Grandma's Coconut Cake, the enticing dessert had been soaked for two days to saturate the cake with coconut flavor, then iced in a fluffy frosting and covered in flaked coconut. Six glorious layers of moist cake were slathered in a towering light-as-air frosting. Vicki Crouser, the owner of WitsEnd, has a contact number for the business on Facebook. We called, placed our order, and arranged a date to pick up the cake. When you work with any home bakery, due to restrictions you won't be able to pick up a cake directly at their home. You will arrange a time and public place for the cake delivery. This was quite convenient for us. Jerry met Vicki at the New Town Square shopping center at an agreed upon time on a day he planned on running other errands. Dad adores fruit .The Banana Pudding Cake was a perfect choice for his birthday treat. Four layers of sumptuous banana cake were filled with creamy banana frosting and vanilla wafer crumbles. This lavish sweet was hand delivered neatly in a labeled, sealed, cardboard cake box. If you don't finish the cake in one sitting, plan on making room in your refrigerator. All of the WitsEnd cakes use fresh butter and eggs. My parent's anniversary cake was a meeting of the minds so to speak. The Mandarin Orange Cake had the mandarin orange pieces my mom loves and the pineapple my dad cannot resist. The confection was an ambrosial tropical paradise. With all three cakes, we had no issues ordering or picking up the desserts. Vicki was always on time to deliver her box of sugary bliss. The WitsEnd Bakery Facebook also showcases beautifully decorated custom cakes for weddings and themed birthday parties. They make a variety of cookies like chocolate mint, chocolate berry, peanut butter tap taps, chocolate chip, gingerbread, and molasses. Several local restaurants serve WitsEnd Bakery cakes. For your next special occasion, veer away from the grocery store and head towards a local baker like WitsEnd bakery. I thought it looked run down and couldn't believe this building is the same building in the Yelp pictures. I just ran a Zillow search for the area to see what properties are for sale in the area because it's so beautiful and here sits the Rockford General Store up for sale $700,000.00 with pictures of the interior and this place is sitting empty. What a cool experience! We were out and about exploring the area and when we left Elkin my wife…read moresuggested we stop at Rockford General Store. She has seen several positive reviews over the course of the past several months and had it bookmarked. The drive into Rockford is rural and charming. Upon arriving in Rockford there are a few small businesses and park with the general store being at the center of the very small town. Rockford was founded around 1790 to be the county seat of Surry county. The Surry county seat was later moved to Dobson. The exterior is rustic with vintage signs and a small covered porch which offers a few places to sit and enjoy your meal. We stepped inside and were immediately impressed with the smell coming from the kitchen area, the aroma of hamburgers filled the air. To the left there is a bulk candy area with a variety of offerings including chicken feet gummies, that was a new one for us! The store has a few simple offerings including candles, t-shirts and décor related items. There are also vintage/antique items but they appear to be part of the décor and not for sale. The young lady at the grill was friendly and helpful, the menu consisted of hotdogs, hamburgers, fries, chili, chicken tenders, etc. We asked if the chili had beans and when we were told it did not we quickly made our decisions. My wife chose chili fries without the cheese and added onion. I chose the chili dog with onions. My wife also decided to try one of their apple turnovers which she could see were freshly baked on site. The prices are VERY reasonable! They also offer soda by the can or bottle and feature flavors not normally found. Our food was ready in a timely manner and we decided to eat outside at one of the tables. We opened everything up and it looked delicious. We both really enjoyed the flavor of the chili and thought it tasted great. My wife enjoyed the freshly chopped onion atop the crispy crinkle cut fries as well. I thought the chili dog tasted very yummy too. The hot dog bun seemed fresh baked. It was not a normal hot dog bun. My wife used the restroom and told me that I needed to see the faucet and sink area, which I've taken a video of. Overall, this was a great stop and we will absolutely stop in again when in the area or we may just decide to take another drive out to Rockford. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays each week. We also learned they are one of the stops within Surry County for Sonker. We did not try one today but took the brochure which features places within the county that offer this cobbler type dessert which varies by featuring seasonal fruits. It sounds delicious and we are adding this to our future road trip itinerary, www.sonkertrail.org. There is even a Sonker Festival which takes place the first Saturday of October in Mount Airy.
