Well after all these years I finally made it in to experience the special place called Angelina's Tea shop. Such a cool place and Wade the proprietor was a fountain of knowledge. He was able to answer any question I had about the 200 or so teas the shop stocks and knows exactly where his merchandise is located. If you are looking for a special piece of tea equipment, accessories, china tea sets, scones, honeys or anything related his shop has it or is going to get it! The teas are from Africa, Japan, China, India, Egypt just everywhere tea is grown. They have tea blends and some teas for medicinal uses as well. On one side of the shop is a myriad of books filling the wall and tables to spend some time if you like sipping on a tea and reading or I'm thinking playing cards. I spent more time there then I thought looking at the teas and merchandise while Wade explained and described the teas I was interested in, a fun way to spend the time getting an education about teas and their back story which I find very interesting. I came in for a tea strainer and maybe a tea or 2 but I left with more knowledge about the tea world and found a friendly shop with just about everything you would need to accompany a tea purchase and a place to linger w a cuppa as some say. read more

I was actually told about this place by the owner of Brasstown Chocolate when we were there for a Yelp event since local businesses here tend to have some of the other local shop's items, which is great for them all. It was easy to find this shop since it is in a business park next to Publix grocery store, just look for that and you will find it next door. The shop itself was large and contained not only teas but items such as pots and strainers to make the tea. Plus books, tables to sit at and enjoy both tea and the books, and then tons of other items such as honey, balsamic vinegar, and olive oil. On the visit, I picked up some Earl Grey / Lavender tea (he had around a dozen different types of just Earl Grey tea), plus we got some creamy clover honey. This place is an excellent local spot to visit and get not only items for yourself but also gifts for others. I highly recommend it. read more

Visited shop first time had seen it many times as it is located nextdoor to precious needlepoint store. Went in with intention of viewing products possibly to include in gift bags for upcoming reunion. Extensive product offerings including local cheese straws etc. Middle age fellow at counter in back never bothered to acknowledge my presence until I was directly in front of him. I had hoped to hear nice overview of their various tea offerings instead I felt like he preferred to interrogate me came across as arrogant perhaps a " tea snob" rather than a helpful welcoming resource. What a cool place to be. Aside from a big selection of tea's you can find birthday cards, products from Italy, Goat cheeses and Pralines. If you want a book or old LP's then that's the store for you! I love tea and was looking forward to purchasing several different products. When I walked in there was a man who was talking and engaging with customers. After they left it was much more quiet and I was offered no help. I asked him how to purchase the teas. He answered normally but I misunderstood. So I asked to gain clarity if I had to bring my own jar for the loose tea to go in. He responded rudely in a condescending tone "take the jar.. pause.. bring it to me and then I will scoop and put into a bag" with hand gestures and a slowed down voice. It made me feel stupid and I didn't want to shop anymore. It made me feel awkward and unwelcome. This store is in a really cute area. It was sort of awkward walking to the large, quiet store that you could hear a pin drop in. There were books to the left of me, and tea cups, tea kettles, tea cups, and infusers in the middle of the store. They also sell honey and a wide range of different kinds of tea. The tea I got was $2.50/oz. It was uncomfortable to be in there, to be honest. Whom I would believe is the owner, was very quiet and awkward to talk with, as I was trying to find the right kind of green tea. There isn't much of a cozy atmosphere in this place as I had envisioned -- more of an old, quiet library ambience. It is quite the drive for me to go to this place. I was drawn in by the $ 1.00 paper back book sale, but got intrigued by the tea. The store is a great source for tea brewing supplies as well as stocking an amazing selection of dried teas. Sadly, this place doesn't get the foot traffic it deserves, since it's way back off the road near Nawab. I tried a tea I'd never heard of called "Pu-erh." The owner, Wade, had sooooo many varieties, but I finally settled on the "raw" or "green" variety (which Wikipedia tells me is also called "sheng"). It's an almost sweet, floral and gentle tea, which, even hot, was very refreshing. Evidently one typically rinses the tea briefly first, to wash away some of the more bitter characteristics of the brew (though Wade assured me that many of his customers simply brew straight-up, which imparts a more bitter flavor. With over 300 teas to sample (and I'm a sucker for cool packaging, and that they've got), I'll be back! read more

Surprisingly this was my first trip to Angelina's! I love tea so I'm surprised it took me so long to get in here. This place was much bigger than I thought it would be. I just stopped in to get some Moroccan mint tea while waiting for a friend to arrive at Nawab so I didn't get a ton of time to browse. The owner greeted me and I asked him about the Moroccan mint tea and he let me know that it is also called Gunpowder mint tea and then got it for me off of the shelves. The price for the Gunpowder tea was super reasonable. I wished it said how long to brew it on the bag though because I forgot to ask. The had a great selection of honey that I want to check out again next time I am in as well! It is a great place to experiment if you want to try different types of tea because they do offer them by the cup. read more

I am a fan of tea, and thus a new fan of Angelina's. What a neat place? There are tea-things for sale ( bags for loose leaf, strainers, traditional teapots of various sizes, drip catchers, canisters for loose leaf). There are books on...I'm assuming tea. There are comic books for sale and board games to play in a seating area. There is a huge wall of loose leaf teas for sale by weight. There is a bar, where you can sample a cup of tea from the wall. I love that I can buy tea in bulk here, and they make it so easy to bring my own containers! There are so many to try, and the owner is very knowledgeable about what he's got on the shelf. Things come and go, so you can't rely on your fave to always be stocked, but the owner is able to recommend other options. I always come in with two or three containers and leave happy. I was not welcomed when I stepped into this store. The owner seemed to be preoccupied with something else (reading a magazine) other than helping me make a selection. It didn't help that another customer came in and wanted a cup of tea. He was Mr. Chatty Cathy with this person (a regular, I'm sure) but once she left, he clammed up once again. I told him that I was looking for a gift for someone who was somewhat of a tea connoisseur and I wanted something to impress them. He waved me over to a wall of teas (which was overwhelming for me) and offered no help at all. In an attempt to receive better service, I asked him where he purchased inventory and he simply stated, "All over the world". I did end up purchasing a few packages of flowering tea, but I will NEVER shop here again. read more

This place has me, a true tea whore, totally mesmerized, jealous, and sad to leave the Triad. Really. I am leaving for good just as I discover the heaven I sought so long as assumed was only part of the afterlife for good folks or something. Nope, this guy is an absolutely amazing purveyor of tea goods... including some awesome (like I could stare at it for HOURS awesome) wares that touch on every culture and are nothing short of beautiful art in many cases... However, I put my hands together behind my back to walk between aisles of glassware that did, indeed, make me think I might just be that bull running through the tea shop! OK down to tea. Where else in this area (or most others) can you find EVERYTHING tea-wise? Seriously... no matter the country, if they do anything to a leaf or even a fruit and steep it, he's got it. Some of the most rare teas he has... His puerh teas are on display with adorable heart shapes to some of the teas--really, how precious to have tea for two that equals your heart and his/hers being unraveled by the pure steamy waters as the aromas (of love, of course) drift across the air. Really awesome in my opinion. He also has many single serving Asian teas that are wrapped, along with humongous blocks that you cut off pieces of to brew, I think? I'm not totally sure on some of them, since he had to pick up his little girl and hurried us out on a school day (warning us, mind you)... OK, so the only negative in my view is actually getting tea made there. One, the water is super hot but takes forevvvver to cool down, longer than at home for one reason or another. Two, um, how do I say this gently? I like my teas flavorful, so especially when I get a fruity tea, I want... well, a drink that tastes similar to how it smells. Ours smelled awesome but tasted remarkably weak. Next time (which will be in a day and a half or less) I'll just pay double for double strength and oversteep if it's an herbal one or just do double the tea leaves for the same time if I'm getting something like jasmine tea (which I already have a perfect version of from my Asian market, though it never ever hurts to have backup :)) I will really be dreaming of this place now that I've seen it, smelled many things in many jars, read labels, picked up cute little lids on cute pots and the like... and found the perfect bit of bliss to complete a shopping center that already has Midtown Cafe and Bakery, THE BEST PANCAKE PLACE IN THE WHOLE WORLD. OMG! Wade, the owner, started Angelina's about 2 years ago and has really done well. He knows his teas and knows them well. His knowledge of tea has always impressed me. If you are a fan of Chinese teas and want to make sure what you are getting isn't laced with mercury and God-knows-what, Wade is your man. He has hundreds of teas available for testing and purchase. And not just teas in tiny packets or tea bags, he has raw tea in jars stacked FLOOR TO CEILING! And he has Pu-erh! And not only does he have Pu-erh, he has bricks of Pu-erh that has been custom made just for him. You probably can't find that down at the local Harris Teeter, ya know? He is so good at his teacraft, he is the only American tea shop I know of that actually ships Chinese teas TO CHINA! I still can't wrap my head around that one. Ok, you know he has a tea leaf or two for sale, but I have yet to mention his tea "gear and gizmos." I have no clue what all some of this stuff is for, but I did recognize the occasional teapot (the iron Japanese pots are my fav), tea strainers, tea steepers, tea sets (those fancy, ornate porcelain sets), tea biscuits, tea warmers, tea cups, and those funky things with the springs. The owner named this restaurant after his daughter! Came here after dining at a restaurant in the same shopping mall. Fair prices, cool gadgets. Quite spacious, plenty of study space. A lot of good vintage books, or just stop by to learn a thing or two about tea. The owner will also tell you about the health and medicinal benefit of tea. This place is amazing and a treasurer to have in Winston-Salem. They have a great selection of loose-leaf teas and me and my boyfriend love visiting this shop. We usually stock up on a pound of tea at a time, all different varieties and Angelina's never fails to impress us. I agree that the owner wasn't super friendly...but that's not why I frequent Angelina's. I go there for affordable and good quality tea. If you want service, go to Teavana they can tell you all about the different teas they have, but watch out - you will pay an arm and a leg. Yes. If you need tea and you want options, this is THE place in Winston-Salem. As Storm W. says, the owner knows his stuff. You can go in and say something like, "I once had some tea that I liked that tasted a little like X and reminded me of Y," and he can figure out what to recommend to you. You can buy a cup of tea to sample it, or buy the tea in bulk. The shop seems to be a little bit bigger than it needs to be and can sometimes feel a tiny bit awkward, but is still totally worth it. I was recommended to Angelina's Tea by a regular customer. I was warned beforehand that the proprietor isn't the warm and cuddly type, so I didn't go in there with any expectations along those lines. Yep, he kinda keeps to himself and does his own thing while you're there, but if you have a question to ask, he is all ears and really knows his teas. We weren't sure which tea to get, so he had us smell the tea to decide. Personally,I prefer this approach over the fake smiles, canned greetings, and pushy sales pitches. It's a tea shop, not Walmart, just let me look and I'll let you know if I need your help. The shop, itself, is fun. It's crammed full of teas, teapots, used books, games, and comfy places to sit. I could see spending some time there during the doldrums of winter, curled up on one of their chairs,and putting together a jigsaw puzzle while sipping a cup of chai. Just now getting to write a review, but this place was amazing! As a total tea snob, I still went into this place prepared to be overwhelmed. I was correct in my assumption; the wall of tea is massive and stocked with everything you can imagine! I ended up with a rooibos blend, a flavored white,a flavored black, and peppermint. I didn't even think to ask the owner if he could do an herbal blend, but I certainly will the next time I go. The prices were very reasonable, I got two ounces of each one and a canister to store them in and only paid around $25. If you are looking to purchase quality loose leaf, come here and NOT Teavana. The prices are way way better, they aren't loaded with artificial colors or flavoring, and best of all there aren't any pushy sales people looking to screw you on overpouring you ounces. Let me get the demerits out of the way: the atmosphere is awful. Anyone who says it's warm or inviting was either born in a cave or made in a factory. I never want to stay longer than necessary -- the air conditioning must be on overdrive, the lighting is harsh, the shelves of accessories are cluttered, and you really have to go out of your way to make conversation with owner. However, the tea is absolutely amazing -- even if the owner isn't personable, he sure does know tea. You can either carry it out by the ounce or have a cup right there in the store. I currently have about 8 varieties (there are upwards of 450 loose-leaf teas in the store). The tea prices are decent; not steep at all (pun). The accessories I examined -- filters, mugs, pots, etc., seemed reasonable as well. Summary: excellent teas, very reasonable prices, terrible atmosphere -- you should definitely go, but you don't have to stay. read more

This is probably my favorite Tea House in America. Not only do they have more options than anyone else around, the atmosphere gives off a feeling of home. Customer service is not part of the routine. From the moment you walk in you are not greeted to where you feel welcomed. Not even, "May I help you find a selection or assist you in any way?" If you are looking for a friendly smile...forget it. For a store being in business as long, you would think the dreary interior would be updated. The lighting is dim and has furnishings from the 70's/80's. The shelving is drop-down wooden shelving you would see in your grandparent's basement to house canned goods from the past year's harvest. It gets better. The storefront has porcelain cats in the window which seems odd for a tea shop. Maybe I am missing something here. I give the tea shop two stars only because of the great selection of tea. Again, as for the service, it does not exist. read more

Amazing selection of tea, it's a miracle I had any money in my bank account when I left. There were numerous varieties of both loose and boxed tea. Plenty of common/basic stuff you would expect as well as a ton of more interesting offerings. I was particularly intrigued by a couple of the coffee/tea blends that had. I tried a cup of one there it the store and really wish I'd purchased a bag of it. Also of note was the selection of pu-erhs, which I think exceeded any selection I'd seen before (though that isn't saying much). A gem of a store, truly one-of-a-kind, one very much worth your time and consideration. Hands-down one of the best places in (and to me, as a former resident, one of the few redeeming features of) Winston-Salem. I joined Yelp just to leave a review for this store. If you love tea, this place could, and should - at the risk of sounding cliche - change your life. I've only purchased tea and associated paraphernalia from the store; I haven't had tea brewed for enjoying for a brief respite but I imagine it would be a lovely experience. If you approach the owner, Mr. Dibbert, with a genuine appreciation for good tea, and politely inquire, he'll be so kind as to share with you his thoughts and recommendations. He's never been anything other than kind and pleasant every time I've stopped by. The quality of the tea he carries is incomparable; the breadth his knowledge can be intimidating at first, but if you have even a vague inkling of what you like or would like to buy, he's always been most helpful. He strikes me as something of a curiosity among people - a consummate professional, extraordinarily so, not the sort of proprietor you come across every day. A wonderful tip - I highly recommend ordering your favorite teas online through this store's website. Though the website itself is clearly in a sort of transitional phase (not all teas are there - though with 500+ teas available, one can hardly begrudge this -- some errors on the site can cause trouble shopping, etc), the customer service for ordering teas online is absolutely impeccable. Lighting-fast shipping, outstanding packaging, a few free samples have been included -- just a joy. A cursory read through the few negative reviews for this place tells me those who left them perhaps could use some brushing up on the art of polite conversation, or are those sort of extroverted types who expect shop proprietors to approach them with an agenda in mind and enjoy the intrusion. Not that there's anything wrong with that per se. But you'll be left in peace to shop here unless you seek help which I love. I am new to yelp, however this is a place I go regularly. The shop owner is always polite and helpful when asked questions. Not being a great tea drinker (unless you count iced sweet tea), you might ask why I would love this store? The answer is simple, this is the only place I know of that serves iced chi tea that isn't instant. I don't drink instant coffee, or tea. Why would I drink instant chi? The shop has several other endearing qualities as well. There is ample seating for small groups to get together and meet in a relatively quiet setting. There are many books to just sit and read or if you like you may purchase them. As well as a local artist gallery! And if you are an avid tea drinker, there is also a wide variety of teas, pots, and other tea related items. Not to mention free wifi. read more

If you like teas, Angelina's is worth a stop, period. Jar after jar of any blend, type and family of tea you can imagine await in a floor-to-ceiling U of shelving, each grouped and carefully labeled so that even beginners can see what they're sniffing. There's no high-pressure sales to contend with, and - imagine this - you're allowed to shop in peace without being strong-armed into this product or that, unlike "certain" places in the mall. The store is surprisingly large, and also carries a winding set of wall bookcases full of vintage books, new and delightfully-colored teapots, cups and prep objects, gourmet honeys and other assorted goodies. It's so nice that my social group decided to hold our weekly meetup there, and we all enjoy a warm cup of our favorite tea, some with milk and a selection of exotic sweeteners, as we chat.
