I originally reached out to Garden State Rocks to book an adult birthday party. I saw they had party packages online for kids and was wondering if they could do the same for adults and they can! Right from the get go they were really easy to communicate with via email & phone to plan my event. When we entered we were welcomed warmly and everything was explained to us ahead of time. Both Rich and Ethan were very knowledgeable on the subjects of belay rock climbing and bouldering. Give those men a raise! When climbing they help coach you to give you the confidence to make it to the top of the wall. They were the best cheerleaders. They believed in us when we didn't believe in ourselves. A great surprise is that a regular member who was climbing that day brought in their dog Suki. She was so cute and friendly, but she knew not to get in the way of the climbers. Wow!! This place was so much fun. We had a free day and wanted to try rock climbing. We called ahead for a staff belay for my two children. Rich worked with the girls to teach all of the basics and safety. He belayed both girls one at a time. They were able to go on multiple tries. It was a great afternoon. Highly recommend. read more

This place rocks (yup, pun intended). Most recently took my son to a friends party here. The hosts did an amazing job with all the kids (ranging from 8-12 years old). They were very patient and let them try a bunch of different spots to climb. Also came here another time with my daughter just the two of us. We had our own instructor that took us all around the gym to climb on walls of varying degrees of difficulty. Since this was our first time climbing he gave us excellent directions and tips for how to climb. The people that work here are great and very passionate about what they are doing. Seems like most of them are really into rock climbing outside the gym as well. Prices are very reasonable. Definitely go. Lots of fun anytime! read more

We took our daughters here for the first time tonight (10 and 8). They absolutely loved it. Everyone on the staff was so warm and friendly. They explained everything and couldn't have been more pleasant. The facility is clean and there is plenty to keep them busy for the hour session. Special kudos goes to Ashley who was assigned as our belayer. She was so patient with my girls and offered nothing but words of enthusiasm and got them through moments when their confidence wavered. By the end of the session, all trepidation was erase and they were attacking the walls with gusto. We will definitely be back! read more

Super fun! Even for people like me with no skills or upper body strength. I still had a good time with friends. We didn't do any belaying, we did the free boulder climb. A lot shorter and plenty of mats on the floor (came in handy when I dropped from the top. I was all maxed out after climbing). I went on the straight wall, but they have curved and slanted walls, which look very challenging. For the free boulder climb, I didn't need to rent shoes, so it was an affordable hangout. The staff, and even other customers, are really nice, informative, and encouraging. I felt really comfortable here from the start, and I typically feel awkward at new places, especially when it comes to things that require any fitness. A little out of shape here! It's also a small space, so it doesn't has an intimidating vibe. It also wasn't crowded, and I felt less self conscious. read more

The staff was unhelpful and pedantic during belay test. Also, factually incorrect about belaying off of the narrow end of locking carabiner (see: literally every climbing hardware company has belay-specific carabiners where you belay off the wide end). Mandatory ground anchors are dangerous in a space that small - massively increases the risk of a belay/climber collision. The gym also mandates you use their ATCs to belay. If you're going to mandate belay devices, cough up for grigris or ATC-XPs. All this aside, the setting was above average and the gym is clean. read more

Perhaps the best bouldering place near Rutgers University. Myriads of problems from v0 to v11 will keep you busy! Top rope climbing is also fun. They feature great top rope and bouldering area for kids. So this is a good choice for birthday parties. read more

I went yesterday with 2 of my friends and we had a great time. We were all beginners and the employee Mark who helped us was fantastic! He made sure we all felt safe and enjoyed the experience. not the biggest gym, but its easy to get to and they take their safety very seriously. some solid bouldering and a bit less top roping, but all in all, a nice small gym for climbing. they have a small beginner space and some cubbies for storage that is in the sight of the front desk. they also sell some shoes and harnesses (especially bc i've been told their harnesses are not that great) and rent shoes/chalk/harnesses. the gym has some cool features, like a crack wall. but the top rope options are a bit limited. the walls are not super high, i think its about two floors so maybe 20ish feet. but the star of the gym is bouldering. again, not the biggest set up, but they do take advantage of their space. there's a solid boulder where you can climb on all side, then a sort of cavern/tunnel that goes through the middle for some solid bouldering. the staff wanders around and checks to make sure you're belaying properly and they will call you out if you're not using the right technique. props to them on that. it was never crowded when i went, but it could be bc i only go when visiting the area. definitely not bad for a visit once in a while, but if i lived in the area, i would quickly become a boulderer.. read more

I have been bouldering here several times and just finished the Basic Belay Class today. One of the best parts was that our teacher, Steve, was very friendly, reassuring, and thorough in his instruction. The class is a great value too: $40 includes the 2-hr class, gear and shoe rental, and a one week pass so you come back and reinforce your freshly learned skills. This place is affordable and inclusive to all skill levels. I really think that's what sets it apart from many of the gyms I've gone too for me personally. The way the walls are set up by difficulty really makes it easy to train your skills and test yourself on each level. It's a particularly good set up for kids. There are definitely however, difficult walls and boulders so that shouldn't discourage more experienced climbers either. The staff was really helpful and safe and after being to multiple gyms, this is only one that made sure we knew how to fall correctly off the boulders and taught us safety spotting and being careful about not walking on the mats behind people. We brought two 12-year-old boys here just for fun -- they have climbed only a couple of times before. They had a fabulous time! They climbed many walls of increasing difficulty under the supervision of Dakota, who was very informative, helpful, and encouraging. Tons of mats on the floor. A lot of emphasis on safety. The rest of the staff whom we met seemed very nice too. The gym did not seem large to me, but it did seem as if there was a lot of variety in terms of the number and increasing difficulty of the climbing spaces. The kids, who were visiting from PA for a few days, want to come back here next time they visit us, even though it is a bit distant from where we live in NJ, and we will bring them back! read more

I love Garden State Rocks! It is, by far, my favorite climbing gym in NJ. The staff is extremely friendly and always helpful. The gym is always super clean and neat. Routes are fun and always updated. It is a great place if you're looking to get into climbing, as well as for children's birthday parties. Take it for what it is. I visit many climbing gyms in my weekly routine. Large, small, far or newer. But I always find myself coming back here. It's very homey. And even after months of not visiting, they still remember me. This is where I got my start, so maybe I am a little biased. This place did not live up to my expectations at all. heard many great things about this place from friends so i decided to check it out myself. first off, the sign on the road is awful. second, the sign on the door looks like it survived a nuclear blast. now we get inside. the owner was rude as hell and not helpful at all. one of the other employees had to step in and take over helping me with my waiver and take my pay. (the waiver took fifteen minutes. )that same gentlemen was the one who gave me my bouldering orientation. i learned his name was jared. fast forward to me actually climbing. the climbs here were absolutely sandbagged, to the point of them not being fun. When i was working one problem, one of the other employees came over and started to give me beta even though i did not ask. mind you, the beta he was giving me was absolutely terrible and wrong. during my breaks i would talk to the employee jared, and another one, dylan i believe his name was. those two employees were the highlight of my visit. i do not think i would come back unless they made some serious changes. :/ read more
