I have used Gardner Moving a couple of times--first for a small move from one apartment to another apartment in the same building and then for a medium-sized move from the downtown city to the North Hills. I appreciated that Gardner Moving had convenient dates available for me, that they gave me an estimate within one day, that the employees spoke courteously with me, that the final price was below the estimate and was reasonable, and that none of my belongings were damaged. We had never hired professional movers before so I reached out to a few friends, and one recommended Gardner. I'm happy to say that I can echo her praise. From beginning to end, I was impressed with their quality of service. We were only scheduling a few days out and within a day or two, they had someone at my house to give me a detailed estimate on moving our belongings. While they weren't the cheapest quote we got, they were the most responsive and thorough. The move itself was fabulous. They showed up with a crew and efficiently moved all of our belongings down multiple flights of stairs and into our new house across town. Though we had lots of fragile or vintage items, everything arrived in perfect condition. And they moved so quickly that our costs came in lower than the estimate. Unbelievably WONDERFUL experience!! When I first called to request help with a small move, I spoke with a young lady who would check into availability and call me back. After a few days I called again, and she apologized for not returning my call sooner but that I was still on her call-back list, which was fine as they were busy during the three day electrical outage. I spoke with Joe first and later the other owner to confirm date and price. Although I didn't need them for more than an hour ( so I thought) I had to pay the minimum 2 hours plus driving time plus fuel charge. (I've moved 8 times in my life and never understood having to pay driving time but it's a standard for movers) Mike and Steve showed up and they were FANTASTIC! Kind. Professional. Witty. And EXPERT movers. They wasted no time moving the furniture from my transport container. They used blankets when necessary and took care not to damage the furniture or walls. But the BEST part was when I discovered the recliner sofa would not fit through my basement door.....hold on....Where most movers would have given up, Mike assured me that he had plenty of time to disassemble the sofa, move it into the basement and reassemble it. What? How? But he and Steve did it with ease!!! He also discovered that one of the wires to my mechanical sofa was frayed during the move (my fault) and I needed to get it repaired so as not to be a hazard. Huge discovery! They finished in under two hours and even cleaned up some of my moving wrapper mess as they left. If I asked friends to help move my furniture, I would've had to buy a new sofa because we would have no idea how to disassemble and reassemble to put it in the basement. And even if my friends were able to solve my dilemma, it would've taken us ALL day. Definitely not two hours. That's why you pay the experts. Less stress. My wife and I told ourselves that when we move into our new house we were done doing it ourselves and opted to hire movers. Let me start by saying we were glad we went with Gardner Moving. Received a free in-home consultation and went room by room highlighting our needs. The quoted price was right on the mark of what I expected going in. A few days before we moved they called and confirmed our date and time and we were good to go. The team of 4 arrived on time, walked the house with me and got to work. They made quick work of multiple rooms, awkward furniture and the multiple steps to the driveway. They asked questions as they went, were careful with everything (not just the boxes marked Fragile). Upon unloading they put everything where it should go and set up our beds. We didn't have any damage who h was a huge relief and they did the work for the price quoted. They move things easily and efficiently, often able to smoothly move things that I imagined were impossible to move. I found Gardners Moving from a local mom's group- they were highly recommended. They were quick to return my call and come out for an estimate. On the day of the move, three movers arrived right on time. Our three bedroom house was moved to our new house about 15 minutes away in around 4 hours. Nothing was damaged or broken. I had the absolute best experience with Gardner Moving this past week! I was extremely anxious leading up to the move and each employee I spoke with was patient and reassuring that everything would be fine. On the day of the move, everything went exactly as planned. These guys are awesome! From the initial meeting and quote to the easy, enjoyable experience of having them set everything in place in my new home. The 4-person team of movers showed care for my 20 years of acquired belongings, wrapping them and transporting them carefully to and from the truck. I'm so glad to have found these guys on Yelp! You always hear horror stories about movers not showing up on time, breaking your stuff or even worse, finding something missing. I'm happy to report, not with these guys! They're actually entertaining, as I dubbed two of the guys working a comedy duo. They were just really friendly guys and it was fun to chat with them while dealing with the stressful situation of moving. They were super patient with me in the fact that we weren't very organized with the move. They did a complete walk through of the house to see what needed taken. I thought they were very good at communicating when loading stuff in and out as well. That's so important, especially with the bulky stuff. They took care with the items and were very honest when they'd spot things that may not make it through the move (yes, we have cheap Ikea stuff and yes I knew they may not last through the move!). They zoomed through things with no breaks and had the large items in one house and out of the other within 5 hours. They are not cheap, but they're not crazy expensive either. Plus, I feel like it's a needed cost when you have very large items to move and you're sick of having your friends, family, uncles, aunts, strangers move you for the last couple years. This family moved us from a third floor, walk-up apartment in Bloomfield to a multi-level home in the middle of the woods in Murrysville. Two full size trucks. The crew of 6 worked from 10 AM to 9 PM on this move. Skinny stairs. Curved stairs. Tight corners. Piano. Antique furniture. Refrigerator. FLAWLESS!! The staff were "moving engineers." What's that mean? They were able to get things into locations I never thought possible. Our furniture is large. Big armoirs. Long sofas. Accurate estimate. On-time. Careful. Personable. No damage. Recently moved from a condo with 4 flights of stairs into a multi level house. Gardner came on time as expected and moved my entire house in less than 8 hours. They were extremely careful with all of our boxes and furniture. In the new house, they put all the boxes and furniture exactly where we wanted it.They took apart our bed and put it back together in the new house. They brought carpet padding and made sure to clean up after themselves when they were done. I would extremely recommend them in any type of moving. Pricing was absolutely fair, and they were extremely accomodating to us. We had more to move than I think they realized (We really packed a ton of stuff in a two-bedroom apartment!), and they weren't sure they'd be able to do it in the time quoted, but they did, right on the button! We used Gardner to move from a large house into a much smaller one about 15 miles away. Between the time we got the estimate and the moving day, we moved a substantial portion of the furniture ourselves. I called and warned them that the job would probably take less time and require fewer movers. No problems at all. The amount we paid was based on the time they actually took (almost 2/3 less than the original quote), everything was done quickly and efficiently, the furniture was placed exactly where I wanted it to go, based upon all the sticky notes I put on everything, and I couldn't have been more pleased. After a smooth estimate and scheduling process, I figured this company would live up to their strong Yelp reviews. However, as moving day arrived and the four man crew arrived 15 minutes late without notice, it was all down hill from there. The local move lasted less than two hours, and involved broken items that were carelessly handled, overcharging, scratched apartment doors, and me needing to help the movers as three out of four of the crew members remained outside during the unloading process. I spoke with one of the owners after the experience, and give him credit for acknowledging an error in the billing that I identified. His crew chief charged me for four men when it was a three man job. He also stated that he arrived 45 minutes earlier than he did, both of which the owner admitted was incorrect. While he did remedy the error and promptly mailed the difference, he made no effort to further remedy my frustrations regarding the breaking of fragile items, scratching of doors, and the need to have to assist his employee. After letting him know that his own employee even stated to me the ridiculousness of doing all of the moving alone in the new apartment, the response I received was, "dully noted". If you have a local move with items that you do not care much about or can look past issues like those mentioned above, then you may be satisfied with Gardner. However, as I stated to the owner, I could not possibly imagine using them to move expensive items, let alone doing so for a longer move. Perhaps this was a one off situation, but regardless, I'd rather not roll the dice and use Gardner moving again. Its a competitive enough industry, that there's plenty of companies out there who would have handled this debacle better. read more

This review is extremely overdue. James moving company helped me move from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia, and they were great! I called them a few months in advance, along with a handful of other companies, to get quotes. They didn't quote me the lowest of all the companies, but it wasn't the highest either. The company that quoted me the lowest had the worst reviews, and even though I had used them in the past and been happy, I wasn't going to trust my stuff for a move that far with a company I didn't fully trust. James moving company had such great reviews that I thought I might as well give them a try. Susan, the woman who answered the phone, was very friendly. Their customer service really won me over. She assured me that the quoted price would be the final price, and I booked the date. The movers were nice and very fast. Joe was the lead guy, and he was extremely friendly. It was hot as hell, and the drive was long. The move into my new apartment was on the second floor, so lots of running up and down steps. No complaints from them, though, even though they must've been exhausted. My boss paid for my move, and the only complaint was that apparently they charged her personal credit card and not her company card...but I don't know that that was necessarily their fault. I'm guessing it was some miscommunication. She was a little mad for a second, but I think she worked it out. I wish that they were here, too, so I could use them for my next local move in Philly! read more

We moved just before a holiday and it was a complete disaster for me. 2 of the movers almost got into a fist fight in the LR. The side table in the office was placed with a drawer toward the wall instead of the room. A chest was placed with the doors toward the wall. This required me to move furiture after they were gone. They forgot to bring up the non skid rug pad first and someone convinced my elderly Mom to throw it away rather than move furniture and rug and place the pad as appropriate. I was told these people were great but I found them to be wanting. I have moved 4 times with movers. This was my worst experience. read more

They were very patient and accommodating with my multiple changes. There were always friendly and professional and responded quickly to my phone calls. They were careful, efficient, and very knowledgeable about how to move the furniture and pack the truck. This was a double move with some items moving to a new home and some items moving to a storage facility and everything ended up where it was supposed to go! If you have hardwood flooring in your home, don't hire this moving company. I chose James Moving because they have a great reputation in the area. I had nothing but a very poor experience. One of the movers on my team of three was not careful at all with any of things....holding boxes up at waist level and just dropping them onto a dolly. Once we arrived at my new home, one of the members of the team had to take a few interior doors off to get furniture through. He got dirty, black, greasy hand prints ALL OVER the interior doors (which are currently unfinished wood waiting to be stained. The greasy hand prints did not easily come off). He also got hand prints on basically each piece of wooden furniture he touched, so I was forced to follow him around cleaning up after him and scrubbing my furniture. To add insult to injury....this SAME guy scratched a huge scratch on the hardwood flooring in my spare bedroom when moving in the bed frame. Then he tried to pretend like he didn't do it (good thing my fiance was watching him). I was willing to forgive this mishap, and calmly accepted his apology. Then.....when moving a wooden wine cabinet into our dining room, they made a 12 to 15 inch scratch in my DARK hardwood flooring right between the dining room and the living room where it is in plain sight. Once again, they totally ignored the problem until I pointed it out and asked for an explanation. The explanation they provided to me, you may ask? "Well this is a heavy piece of furniture, what did you expect?" So I paid $700 to have my interior doors covered in greasy hand prints and to have two different hard wood floors scratched in two different rooms. I called the owner of the company, Joe, and he said he would have their "flooring guy" come to fix the scratches in the floors. It took a full week for this guy to call me back and schedule a time to come to come to the house to fix their damages. And it's not going to be until the END OF THE MONTH that he can come out to fix the floors. Absolutely unacceptable from a "professional" moving company. I would never use this company again nor would I recommend them to anyone. I'll pay more money to use someone else, who actually hire movers who act professionally and are careful with your belongings. read more
