The golf courses are absolutely beautiful and the rangers and cart personnel are friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the accommodations leave much to be desired. We were going to stay in a single villa but when we got to it (which seemed like a quarter mile walking from the parking lot), we were very disappointed. The fact that it was rustic was okay but we had inquired if there was a table where we could play cards in the evening and were told "yes". Well, the table was a small coffee table. The biggest problem was the bathroom shower which had a lot of mold. I attempted to call the front desk to report it but neither one of the two phones in the villa worked so I used my cell. I took a photo of the mold and requested that we be moved to the lodge. They did honor our request and the room was small but okay. When checking out the person at the front desk said that they checked out the bathroom issue that I reported and tholught it was fine. I was furious because I had a photo to prove my point and didn't like the attitude. The restaurant has a breakfast buffet but we decided to order individually. The servers don't come to your table - you go to the bar and order and pay and then someone brings your order to you. Lunch and dinner which are mediocre are served by the staff. Honestly, they need to invest some money to make improvements in the accommodations. We loved the courses but won't be returning because there is no option to stay anywhere else in that area that is decent. read more

The golf courses are great and the golf staff is very helpful. I was surprised that the sand in the bunkers wasn't better (some were good, others had a lot of rocks). We ate several meals at the lodge, all were very good, except for the Italian sandwich. It turns out it was "grab and go" (we didn't understand what that meant), meant for a quick meal at the turn. Our bad. It was okay, just a cold pre-made sandwich. If we'd known that, we'd have ordered something else. Overall a good experience. read more

First timers at the resort and it was a great time with the group of eight that we had for three days and two nights in the cottages. The cottage had four beds (two upstairs and two downstairs) with a bathroom upstairs and one downstairs. It was a nice surprise to have a fridge that was bigger than a dorm fridge to put our food in. Both clean and decorated nicely, I would like to stay in the cottages again. Our group also ate our meals at the bar and grille on-site. Both the food and service was great and wasn't too expensive. At dinner the place was very busy, but breakfast and lunch were not too bad. Everything I got was very good (Nashville Hot chicken sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich, and the breakfast buffet were really good. All four courses were really fun to play and I wouldn't be scared about hitting driver on most of the par 4's or the par 5's. Just some things were missing about the golf experience... No GPS on the carts - if it wasn't for my app on my phone (had 1 bar of LTE on almost every hole) and my range finder, I wouldn't know where or how far to hit my ball. There were a few carts that didn't have either and that was their #1 complaint. A resort of this caliber should have GPS. No sand for filling in divots - not sure if it was the time of the year (September 18), but there were holders for sand, but they were empty. No ball washers - would have been nice ever few holes There were a couple other really small things, but overall golfing there was a great experience and I would go back any year and do it all over again. read more

The Garland Golf Resort, located 4 hours north of Detroit in Northern Michigan, is a sweet "Up North" golf experience. The nearest town of Lewiston boasts a tiny population of 1,289 inhabitants so you really get to experience the 'boonies' up here. What a delightful contrast to the urban sprawl of Metro Detroit! The resort has an amazing FOUR different 18-hole golf courses to choose from so you never have to play the same course twice during your stay. The courses were in beautiful shape full of northern pines with well maintained fairways, tees and greens. After playing the challenging Fountains Course yesterday, my wife and I played the Swampfire Course today. Be advised that Swampfire has a water hazard on an astonishing 16 of its 18 holes. It is definitely a test of one's shotmaking precision and skill. Hint: Bring plenty of balls! LOL. We stayed in a spacious room in the Lodge but found the resort's service to be just fair. Based on interactions at the resort's front desk, pro shop and restaurant, the service fell short of what I was expecting for what is billed as one of the Midwest's premier golf resorts. Overall, we had a great "Up North" experience on some excellent and challenging golf courses. read more

One of my favorite places to play in Northern Michigan. Great courses that are always in great shape. The resort is very clean, however is extremely dated and in need of an update. Flower prints, gold framed pictures, and plastic flowers are the decor. The most frustrating part of this trip is that there is no way to reserve a room online. In fact, you can't even call on Sunday to reserve a room. You have to send an email requesting a reservation and a few days later (hopefully) you will get a response. It's 2018 you have to send an email and wait to hear back for a reservation. Hmmm. Overall it's a great property, but it's stuck firmly in the 90's. read more

This place is a dramatic example of all that glitters is not gold. Visually and aesthetically, it is beautiful. Nice trees, clean, nice rolling golf course views. However, I will never stay here again because the walls are so thin that it was impossible to sleep. I could hear people talking in normal to slightly above normal volume levels in rooms on both sides. Next, they are cheapskates on the air conditioning. I like to sleep in a cool room and the air conditioning is very weak no matter where you set it. Lots of hotels are trying to save electricity with skimping on air conditioning, but that's what Yelp is for. I'll give all of them lousy ratings and tell the world about it. Maybe if enough of us Yelpers do that, we can actually persuade them not to screw us on air conditioning. Finally, the coffee in the room was so fricking bitter it was virtually impossible to consume without pinching off my nose so I couldn't taste it. You will notice I have written well over 100 reviews, but I rarely dish out a "1" rating. That's because I try to be fair and not vindictive with my reviews. I can't answer for the golf, but as far as for a place to sleep, this place is nothing but an expensive Motel 6. read more

Did not stay at the resort - only visited for golf....and IT WAS AWESOME! Got to play two courses, Reflections and Swampfire. Both courses were in great shape and really fun (and hard!). Everything was in great shape from tee to greens and the greens were very fast. Swampfire's bark is worse than its bite - the course has water on 16 of the holes but for the most part you don't really notice it. Somehow I still found the water a few times. Our group did it at the restaurant on site and it was good and also affordable. Then lodge looked awesome and I do hope to stay there one day. Every area we went, clubhouse, restaurant, bathrooms were all clean. All good employees were nice, especially the starters- they gave an overview of the courses and were professional and personable. The patio bar is awesome and I'm sure when the fire place is in use it's even better. I highly recommend Garland and even though I did not stay there I doubt you would have a bad time. 5 stars! read more

Chose this resort for my 44 man, yearly outing and was not disappointed! The grounds were well kept, the lodge was a northern MI dream log cabin with that beautiful northern feel, the staff accommodating and wonderful, and the courses a lot of fun! I was skeptical at first, knowing from others their past experiences there but all was laid to rest after getting there. They changed ownership a few years ago and the new owners reinvested into the resort and you can tell! We played five rounds over three days and every day was awesome. We booked the private golf cottages to stay in across the road from the main lodge. They slept four, two upstairs and two on the main floor, each with their own bathroom, a deck, a grill, and kitchen. We stocked up on groceries but they also have a really nice bar and dining area at the main lodge. We all hung out, visiting each other; some coming from as far as Pittsburgh and Toronto for this weekend. Beyond the free breakfasts and range balls, the usage of their outdoor patio at the lodge was perfect for all my guys. They had a great outdoor bar and we took full advantage of it! Hats off to Amanda and Nick G., you guys were great to us! Probably will go back again next year. My only gripes, if I had to mention any, was the lack of cell service/ wifi, the showers and no water pressure, and one or two rogue rangers telling us were too slow when we're the only group on the course and there's no one directly behind my foursome. Just finished a 3 day, 2 night stay in a French Villa and playing Reflections, Swampfire and Monarch. All three courses were fine. Nice, but not great. Golf staff was top notch. Did not encounter one mosquito, tick or large fly, but the nats were terrible. The Villa was very nice. Spacious, clean and comfortable. Large master bedroom and very nice large master bath with shower, separate tub and a large walk in closet. Loved the accommodations. The restaurant staff was friendly, but the service was slow. The food was not that great and there was no vegan option (except the house salad). I would recommend driving 8 miles and eating dinner at the Lewiston Lodge on the lake. Wrote email to Garland Resort a few days ahead of our arrival inquiring about WiFi. Got this reply from the Director of Sales, Aaron Gentry: "It looks like the group is scheduled to be in our double villas and those do have wi-fi." Our unit, as well as the rest of our 5 units, did not have a WiFi. This is unacceptable. We were told they were "working on it" but left uncertain what this meant...... working on it as in installing cabling and hardware or just hooking up routers. Saturday, following our round of golf, I did notice we had a signal reading but the signal strength was non-existent. Dial up would have been rocket speed compared to this WiFi. Unit was not read for check in prior to our late afternoon tee time, so we were left to check in and enter our unit after dark. The living room is dark. No wall switch and no ceiling light. Had to fumble and stumble our way around to find a lamp. There are 2. They are small. You could not read in this living room after dark if you wanted to. The gas "fireplace" has no operating instructions / directions. Our unit (517) had no hot water. The water flow in the shower was a trickle. In the morning we registered these issues with the front desk personnel and were told they would be resolved. Upon return from our afternoon golf, there was a slight increase in the shower's water flow, but there was no hot water. The water was certainly warmer that the cold tap water, but calling it "tepid" would be overstating it. Did discover there to be hot water at the dual sinks. RH sink had hot water at the customary LH handle. The LH sink had hot water, but, the hot water was plumbed to the RH (cold side) handle. Still not sure why they didn't resolve this when "fixing" the hot water. The breakfast buffet was well done with nice choices. Sadly, the facility is split into two large rooms with the serving area only in one room. There are two doors for people seated in the non-serving line section of the restaurant to access the food serving line. Somehow, someone thought it would be a good idea to clog up one of the doors between the 2 rooms with a coffee serving station. This was not a good idea. Just inside the entrance to the breakfast buffet, to the right hand side, they have set up a busing station. Garbage cans stacks of dirty plates and cups, right here where you walk by them when going to your table. Who sets up a restaurant with a table busing station in full view, front and center? Overall, we loved the golf at Garland. Played Fountains, Monarch & Swampfire. Great course conditions (even for early season) and tremendous greens. Sadly, the accommodations our group experienced were not even close to the caliber of the golf courses. We, as a group, do this twice a year. We move our destination around each time as there are so many great courses to play in northern Michigan. We'd love to play here again, but that probably will not be happening as this group will not return to the accommodations at Garland Resort. read more

I've been playing golf for 25 years at the Garland Resort along with my 3 friends. I have always been pleased with the course conditions, service and food/drink. This year our experience was less than enjoyable (other than the golf) ...staff was short and rude, in addition the management apparently deciding to eliminate offering appetizers to the golfers after playing a round of golf... other than a bag of chips. We have easily spent over $15,000.00 between green fees and drinks/food over the last 25 years. It baffles me that a decision was made to not serve casual food/appetizers to paying guests (the answer was they don't do that a buffet night btw) but there were 3 buffet nights in a row. How hard can it be to offer a cheese plate, wings or potato skins?.... It actually had us considering changing the venue after this length of time supporting the place. summary; 1. Not a good decision on the food service front 2. Have the staff not be so ornery and grumpy It's a resort, and we go there to enjoy food, drink and service. read more

i was at Garland for a Dental Hygiene annual meeting in October, not for golfing so my review may be a little different. unfortunately the weekend our meeting fell on was a very rainy and cold one and we had meetings in different buildings and areas of the hotel. we were told everything was under one roof but we were misinformed. the grounds are very rocky and unlevel, not good for professional women and their footwear. i wore heels for a few hours then i switched to flats or boots for fear that i was going to fall on my face when i walked from one building to the next. we had quite a large group, around 20 women and needed to have private meetings to discuss topics before we discussed them with everyone (200+). unfortunately the hotel had no location for us to have our usual breakfast meeting where we eat and talk at the same time. so we were offered a villa so we could sleep, eat and meet all in the same area. unfortunately the villa we were given was across the street from Garland all together in a gated community. so each day and in between events we had to walk to out car and drive to our villa and back again. this wouldn't have been so bad except for the rain. it was very nice and spacious villa. plenty of room for 15 women. there was a kitchen, laundry room, dining room, living room with fireplace, balcony, 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, pool table and bar in the basement and an outdoor hot tub which unfortunately went unused. now back to the Garland resort. a lot of the decor is very 80's and outdated (see photos). there are a lot of long hallways and i was easily confused. the parking lot is very small and the keys get deactivated easily and i had to drive back and forth to and from the hotel after discovering my key was deactivated which was a pain. the room for our main meeting was entirely too small, we were cramped and some people had to sit next to beams and could barely move. there were a variety of technical difficulties with audio and video equipment. the place where we ate lunch was crowded and there weren't enough tables and chairs. the staff had to move everything closer together and squeeze in more tables and chairs. the food was so so. however the president's roast and dinner was not overly crowded and there were a correct amount of tables and chairs. the food was mostly good, but i felt the salmon was dry and fishy. overall the place seemed nice, just outdated. i'm sure it would be a nice place to golf and i hear it's really pretty in the winter time. but i think for a large business meeting it was just not the right location. read more

Still good, but has been better We've held our annual Fathers Day golf outing here since the mid-1980s, just a year or two after the main lodge first opened. So we've literally seen it all and feel qualified to make a few comments. First off, Garland holds a special place in our hearts for all the memories we've created there over the years with friends and family (usually 12 -16 attend). The golf is still top notch and a stay at Garland is always a special experience. Having said that, we do notice that the business they run today is different than we have experienced in the past -- mostly related to failure to re-invest in the business. To begin, the golf course and grounds are no longer festooned with flowers like they were in years past. More importantly though, as others here have correctly commented, the rooms are indeed beginning to show age. We stayed this year in the two-bedroom double villas. On the surface, they appeared hotel clean. But pull the bed away from the wall and you see it probably hasn't been vacuumed for ten years -- absolutely filthy disgusting (mauve carpet that looked dark grey from years of accumulated dust and dirt). And one of the prime drawing cards of staying out in your own log cabin villa used to be the enclosed hot tub in the center of the complex. Sadly, it has been closed for at least the past two years and the staff told me there are no plans to ever repair it. Perhaps they might consider mentioning that on their web site so unsuspecting visitors aren't rudely surprised like we were. Two technology failures round out our experience. First, the free Wi-Fi never did work in our villa. When I called the front desk to complain, I was told, "Oh, our IT knows about that, but there is nothing he can do." Yeah, you can probably guess my Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot surprise at hearing that. And don't expect to get a cell phone signal here either unless you literally go out into the middle of an open field and hold your phone up -- then you might get one bar on an AT&T phone. Now some might correctly argue that this is precisely why you go way out in the woods to a resort -- to get away from technology. I can concede that is a valid perspective. But I also know that the largest taxpayer in the county has massive political pull and if they can convince the government to allow them to have a private jet-capable airstrip and a wild game preserve, they can surely find a way to get at least a rudimentary level of cell phone service for their customers. Same for providing workable Wi-Fi for guests. Anyways, I've rambled enough. I love Garland and always will have fond memories. But someone in management there better wake up quick and reverse the noticeable decline on the accommodations side of the house. I do want to give a special shout out to Roach -- he is perhaps their greatest customer service asset! read more

Do not stay here. We had a crappy time. The front desk staff was rude, getting the Internet to work was very difficult, impatient golfers almost ran over my child with their carts. They didn't give us The correct number of free breakfast vouchers. The lock on our door was hastily put together and the strike plate literally fell off when we open the door. There were no lights in the hotel room, other than a lamp next to the bed. We were welcome to buy lots of beer cans on our patio, from the partiers below us. The hot tub was closed. The outdoor pool is too cold to swim in. The indoor pool was too cold to swim in. The indoor hot tub did not have working Jets. At the price point of $159 a night I would expect much more. This place should be priced more like $39 a night, comparable to Econolodge or Motel 6. read more

Stayed for a weekend golf trip with 15 other guys. Great atmosphere, food was pretty good as well. I'm a vegetarian and they still had good choices available. The staff was very accommodating based on my needs. Golf, wow the courses were absolutely beautiful!! Great shape and overall just perfect. I would definitely stay and play here again. We booked a golf cottage here and called ahead to secure early check in. We arrived at 11 am and were told that the previous room holders had just left and that we'd need to wait (which was absolutely reasonable). The troubling part was that they made absolutely no effort to get us into the cottage until 4 p. More than that, the staff everywhere where we went (restaurant, front desk, etc), acted put out when we didn't know we had to seat ourselves or when we asked for a status update. To avoid writing a novel, I'll just say that the customer service here is non-existent and the staff abrasive. read more

Went here for cross country skiing on the Nibble and Nosh tour and had an incredible time. The food was great, the trails were beautiful, and our beds were cozy. This is only a golf review. Played Monarch yesterday. Teed off behind a 20 person outing. Starter lectured us for 5 minutes to inform us that the group was young, drunk and would not maintain a reasonable pace. Basically let us know that nothing would be done to protect the course or to make sure we had a good round. Took us 5 plus hours to play. Every tee was littered with empty beer cans and liquor bottles. We filled in hundreds of unrepaired divots and ball marks while waiting to hit shots. We never saw a ranger or anyone ask the group to speed play. Great course and we got a great price online but the 'stay and play' marketing is attracting a crowd that is not primarily interested in golf. Before you make a tee time, find out if you are following group outings because the staff will not address on course issues. read more

Would have been a better stay if cellular capabilities were better in the area. Cell phones do not work from inside the property. Wifi capability was also limited. We attended a wedding at Garland this past weekend with 100 guests. The resort decor is stuck in the 80's but everything was very clean and neat. We stayed in the single villas which was tucked away amongst the pines. The golf on Saturday was freezing cold ~ a hot drink cart making rounds would have been nice. I am not a golfer but enjoyed playing this difficult course. The grounds are beautiful although the paths are bumpy. The staff throughout the weekend was so polite and helpful and friendly. The staff really went out-of-their way to accommodate our group. Hats off to the chef who grilled our filets because they were PERFECT. There isn't much to do around Lewiston but if you golf or need a secluded conference location I would suggest Garland ~ you can't beat the area views. read more

The resort was beautiful. The 3 bedroom villas we stayed in were nice though they could use some updating. The layout of the golf courses were great and very pleasing to the eye. However I felt the courses themselves could use some work. The week we stayed there was no rain but the courses were very wet. The fairways were very long all week as if they didn't cut them (except fountains course) the greens were slow, wet and spongy. This may not bother some golfers, but for the golfers that want to play pristine immaculate courses, these were not. For the most part, the lodging was great, with the exception of brown water when trying to fill the jacuzzi, service was friendly and amenities were nice. However for the amount of money it cost, I would expect the courses to be set up for golf better than a typical public course. I believe I would pay a little extra and go to TreeTops next time. read more

I purchased a $400 Garland gift certificate for my husband for our anniversary 9 years ago. The gift certificate states that there is no expiration. We just tried to use it and was told that 8 years ago Garland was purchased & a condition of the purchase was they incurred none of the debt (which means gift certificates). So, one year after I spent $400 the new owners decided not to honor the gift certificates. We feel like someone stole $400 from us!! My husband has talked to management & they refuse to accept the gift certificate. Very disappointed. read more

The golf courses here are very well-maintained (Only reason for any stars). Kudos to the groundskeepers. The accommodations and clientele are very disappointing. First, the accommodations: I have been coming up to Garland for about 25 years. The early years when it was owned by the Ottos, were five-star experiences. Everything was top-notch and you were treated like royalty. Since then it has gone steadily downhill, except for the course conditions, which have always been exceptional. The service is sub-standard as if they only wanted your money and once they had it, well, you were on your own. The room accommodations in the Lodge range from "just alright" beds to plumbing that is rusty and old. The internet is spotty at best. If it is out, a quick call to the front desk to tell them will result is an attitude of, "Hmm. That's too bad. It seems to work okay up here." Cell service is pretty non-existent, which I understand is not the fault of Garland, but for your information. Now let's talk about the golf experience: As I mentioned, the course conditions have always been top-notch. On two trips this summer, we were bothered by foursomes blaring loud music from their golf carts while either on the greens or tee boxes. Now I am not a golf snob, but I didn't come up here to golf while music is blasting from the next fairway or neighboring green. I told the ranger about it when I saw him and he was indifferent, claiming not to have heard anything. Our group of 20 did a scramble and were behind another group of several foursomes. Our round took over SIX HOURS. This is inexcusable on any course. The course rangers were obviously not doing their job or didn't care. If this is allowed here, that is even worse. I will be taking my groups and spending my golf trip money at other resorts from now on. read more
