I first had this at Planet Hollywood in Vegas so when I went to Chicago, I had to get it from the original. The chicago mix is the way to go since you want sweet caramel but salty cheese. Both flavors are so extreme. The cheese is sooo cheesey and buttery and then the caramel is so damn sweet it hurts. But you just gotta buy it and eat it. It gets soggy the next day, still edible, but by the third day, youre donesies. Eat it right when you get it and you will be happy hehe. This is a great souvenir if you see the person soon. read more

i don't quite understand what the craze is about this place. i pass by a garrett's almost every night going home in new york, but never brought myself to want to pay $4 a bag for popcorn, no matter how good it was. since i was on vacation (and therefore, in typical tourist fashion spending mode) and was on my way to the sears tower, i thought i would grab a bag to hold me over until dinner. i was quite surprised when i arrived at this corner location to find a line that had already formed out the door and around the corner. nonetheless, i waited the 40 minutes to get my medium sized bag of mix (caramel and cheese popcorn). 15 minutes into the wait, it was announced that they had run out of caramel popcorn and it would be a 15-20 minute wait for caramel popcorn. i munched on my snack as i walked to my next tourist stop and found the first few bites to be not bad. but after a short while, the popcorn started to taste highly processed and not very satisfying. the upside of this experience was that i couldn't wait to get a mug of hot cocoa to dip it in (i discovered this tasty combo one day at home when i made a huge batch of popcorn and it had gone stale) and that the store had charged me for a medium bag of cheese popcorn instead of medium mix because they didn't have enough caramel. so i saved $1 for this unsatisfying treat! i certainly would not pay $100+ dollars for a tub of this popcorn and cannot fathom how they justify charging so much for this treat. personally, i think the 3 flavor (butter, cheese and caramel) tubs of popcorn sold at cvs and staples around holiday time taste a lot less processed than garrett's popcorn and is just $6 a tub! i would have given garrett's 3 stars because the popcorn is just average, but they lost a star on price. read more

There was two ladies that worked closing shift on 10/05/19, one of African American lady (the more overweight of the two ladies that were there) was extremely rude. When in Chicago, do what the Chicagoans do. I stopped by and sampled some. The very cheesy flavor with sharp cheddar makes your fingers coated with the cheese flavor. It was overwhelmingly powerful. We bought the almond caramel and the butter popcorn. For expensive popcorn they failed to live up to the hype. The butter popcorn was salty and tasted like styrofoam. The caramel almond clumped up and carried a burnt taste to them but the actual popcorn was not burnt. I suspect the almonds were over toasted but not burnt. The burnt flavor clings to the popcorn. This was so disappointing. For whatever reason, there are many of these popcorn shops in the city. read more

I never knew that Chicago was their known for their popcorn, but it was kind of a nice surprise. Walking around downtown in chilly weather makes you want something warm and toasty. What is warmer and toastier than freshly made popcorn?! I have also never experienced the Chicago mix, which is caramel corn mixed with cheddar cheese. What an interesting flavor combination, but I admit that I do prefer the caramel corn more. Every time I visit home I have to make a trip to Garrett's. Without a doubt, hands down, bar none- the BEST popcorn you will ever put in your mouth. The caramel corn from Garrett's will consequently ruin every other caramel corn you ever eat. No, seriously. It is buttery, rich, thick and gooey and it melts into each freaking kernel like it is its job. Don't just stop at the caramel, go ahead and order the Chicago Mix. It's a combo of the cheese and caramel- sweet and salty and every damn bite is unbelievably delicious. The popcorn aroma radiates from a block away from the store and the popcorn so I knew I had to try it. As recommended, I tried the Garrett Mix. I'm not usually a cheese popcorn fan, but Garrett's is one of the better ones I've had. Their caramel corn is amazing and when combined with the cheese, it's no wonder how the Chicago Mix got to be so popular. I made the mistake of not reading the reviews before ordering the jumbo size bag. It goes stale if it's not finished within the day (the cheese one more so than the caramel). Also, this stuff is REALLY rich so I'd recommend ordering a small/medium to share or eat solo as it's not worth the extra money for soggy popcorn. read more

God I love Garrett's. This one is a pretty decent one, and when there's not Taste of Chicago traffic or other huge events the line moves fairly quickly. I always get the Chicago mix and it seems that my order gets bigger with each trip. Yikes. i've lived in chicago a short period of time and have tried just about everything that is known for in chicago....except for garrett's popcorn. i never understood the obsession with it. so finally, on a recent trip here i decided to try the infamous popcorn that draws crowds with lines out the door. i came to this store in the middle of a weekday afternoon, there was a short line. i read the reviews here on yelp first before going in because i didn't want to be a total "tourist" and hold up the line. =) so i walked in, and knew exactly what i needed to order....The Mix. So i grabbed a Large bag of The Mix, paid my $6.60, and left for the airport. you have no idea how bad i wanted to eat it, especially from the smell of it. but i contained myself, got home, and shared this wonderful bag of caramel and cheese mix popcorn with my family. we totally LOVED it and wondered why we never had it when we lived in chicago! so now, we will have to enjoy these delicious treats by ordering online! the cheese popcorn does get stale more quickly than the caramel, but it was still delicious. i dont think i've ever had a cheesier popcorn....or even any snacks as cheesy (lol) as these. honestly, the popcorn, i thought, was more cheesy than cheetos! and the caramel was crunchy, sweet and blended very well with the cheese popcorn. definitely a MUST TRY when visiting chicago for the experience and then order online whenever the craving hits! *featured on food networks "giada's weekend getaway"* read more

I went into this which was my favorite store, to speak with the manager Tatiana and was told she would be right out. After waiting almost 10 minutes the cashier - which was the same girl that went in the back originally to tell Tatiana someone wanted to speak with her, she goes in the back and is back there about a minute and then comes back to me and says oh she's gone, she called me and told me to tell you she would be back in a few minutes. Now unless they have a back door that can't be seen from the front not to mention they are on the corner, so if you go out a side door you would be able to be seen on the street. At that moment all the praise I had give that store and all the workers left me. I had the honor to cook for several of the corporate office staff and praised that store and the manager, how I wish I could take it all back. I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK TO THAT STORE EVER, NO MATTER HOW BAD I WANT GARRETS. read more

When it comes to flavored popcorns these guys are the absolute best. I initially tried the caramel popcorns which were a bit too sweet after a few starting bites. My next visit i mixed the cheese with the caramel cashews and that's the best mix. You'll be able to neutralize the flavors that way. Parking could be bit tough. read more

In my opinion, I do not see the allure for super expensive popcorn, but they do make great souvenirs, especially in the shiny metal container bins. I sampled a few of the top selling popcorn, including kettle corn and caramel, and was grossly unimpressed with the stale nature of the popcorn, as they've been sitting out in the counter all day. I'm hoping that the ones in the jar are fresh, but since they're given primarily as a gift, I'll never find out. read more
