Everyone told us that Garrett's was the place to get popcorn while visiting Chicago, so we decided it was a must try. We made it there right before closing. This is the Garrett's location I typically frequent. The corner of State & Jackson is where (on weekends) to catch _either_ of the CTA routes from downtown to Soldier Field [The #146 on State, and the obscure #130 on Jackson]. I must visit here at the correct times. I have never had to wait more than three minutes to get through the line. I opt for the small cheese popcorn. I do not think it is too salty or too cheesy. I have the perception that the persons here who have given this venue a low rating _really do not like popcorn_. But somehow, they visit here, and allow some sort of peer pressure to compel them to order the cheese popcorn. (If you really don't want anything from here, but you're here, go for the plain popcorn.) Realize that the corporation has been in business since 1949. It must have been that, back then, downtown theatres were not inspecting every patron for smuggled foodstuffs. You won't be successful at attempting this now. (The concession stand is now a crucial part of the theatre's bottom line. So crucial; it charges "hostage" prices for everything.) A player for the Houston DYNAMO of Major League Soccer admitted on espn2 to purchasing a bag of Garrett's popcorn as part of his ritual whenever Houston play in Chicago. (!) If you think Garrett's popcorn is not what you're used to (& what you're used to *must be* microwaved stuff), do what Amy S. suggests: Try a bag of Jay's O-Ke-Doke before you taste Garrett's. Lastly, to completely torpedo the price argument out of the water: Would you care to guess how much Garrett is paying for leases and taxes at its downtown and magnificent mile venues? touristy i know! but come on it's addictive, delicious, fatty popcorn! I love it!! The caramel crisp and cheddar corn mix is so delicious! Out-of-town friends that have come to visit loved the popcorn here. I mean afterall, its ia "Chicago tradition!" It is pretty pricey for a small bag of popcorn but I think it's pretty worth it for the medium or large bag. The tin cans cost upwards of $30 so just stick to the little brown paper bags. read more

I'm from the suburbs and pretty much every time I come to the city I get garretts popcorn and I'll pick some up for friends/family or anyone I feel like that deserves a delicious sweet taste of garretts popcorn. They also have tins that you can have wrapped/sealed if you want to ship/send anyone garretts popcorn. I know it's a Chicago thing so if your looking to give someone a "taste" of Chicago this is a super nice treat for them. They make it fresh daily and I actually had to wait 10 minutes because they ran out of it... So I had it nice and hot! They also have free samples so if you want to try any of the different kinds, which is super awesome! read more

I first heard about Garrett's when I was traveling in Florence, Italy on a Rick Steves tour. One of my tour members was raving about how awesome Garrett's popcorn from Chicago was. So I had to stand in the obligatory line for my one gallon of the MIX. Sure, when I first heard about mixing cheddar cheese and caramel popcorn together I was a little bit apprehensive, but that went away when I started eating the popcorn. I have to admit, the caramel popcorn really stood out for me. The cheese popcorn seemed a little bit stale (it didn't have the nice crunch that the caramel had), but the flavors together were good. Based on two of the workers, cashier and one of the baggers were rude, when I asked her a question , the cashier told me she didn't have pennies, I needed exact change or I need to use my credit card.
