I have used Garvey Roofing in recent months for three comparatively small jobs, but perhaps more noteworthy, at this time I am setting up with them for yet a fourth job, and this one involves a known leak ... I can look at the roof in the attic and see daylight through it. I am confident Garvey will do a proper job for a decent price, with me on a limited income. I have read the negative reviews but had no such adverse experience myself. The roof is old enough for any high-pressure salesman to make a case for a whole new one, which would require a complete strip and rebuild, but instead, Tom Garvey assured me none such is required at this time. I should add that one of my jobs had nothing to do with a roof, but instead was replacement and painting of a flight of outdoor wooden stairs, which Garvey did better than the last guys who worked on those, and worked it around needed use by my family. Great Service and probably saved our lives. Last spring my roof sprung, a few leaks. At the time, we had hoped to mop on some tar and call it done for a few more years. However, we noticed some sagging in our kitchen and since we had a contractor over doing some unrelated work, I said, "Hey, cut open that ceiling and see whats going on"... well, the roof was caving in (Bad remodel in the 1940's). So I started interviewing contractors. You would not believe the bozos that showed up. One company's Idea to fix the problem was just to poor some filling agent on the roof, smooth the sinking roof out, throw some tar on, and call it a day. After interviewing 10-12 + contractors, Garvey was really the only one that gave me a detailed contract and estimate. I reviewed his licenses and discussed his plan with my dad, a 40 year contractor in Oregon (he knows a thing or two about roofs). I settled with Garvey. The leak had progressed to a flood and because we have a flat roof, we were unable to tarp unless we wanted to create a rooftop swimming pool. Because of the severity of the situation, they squeezed me in on the next sunny week (it rained A LOT last spring). I know he pushed some jobs back to accommodate us as an emergency. On day one, Mr Garvey showed up to check on his guys. He was on the roof for about 3 min, and said. " where is the vent for your gas heater and where is the vent for your stove". My answer was " I don't know you are on the roof.... do I need one?" Turns out vents are REALLY important! 4 years earlier, before we purchased our home, the previous owners (Bank owned property flippers) installed a new gas wall heater and gas oven vent. instead of venting the gas to the outside. They vented it to our attic!!!! The area around the stove vent was saturated in oil and was so hot you couldn't touch it. The vent for the heater was next to all the oil and was probably venting carbon monoxide for years! Thankfully, no fire or death by carbon monoxide! Mr. Garvey fixed it, with no extra charge. The roof turned out great. My dad came a couple months later and inspected the job. He gave his thumbs up and believe me, that is hard to get. He is a perfectionist craftsman quick to criticize bad workmanship. read more

THE WORST CONTRACTOR EXPERIENCE I'VE EVER HAD! Crazy part is that I met the owner of this company through his son... so you'd think he'd go out of his way to do a great job... well here's what happened: - Everything seemed fine and even great while we signed the contract and discussed things at first. - BUT once the job started, I quickly noticed that they had not used the top quality materials we had discussed and actually specified in the written contract we both signed!! - THEN, when I brought the problem to the owner's attention, he started lying to me about how it wasn't a big deal and he could fix it 'for me'... which would apparently cost him more, but he'd do it 'for me'. - I was skeptical and asked the owner about the way he was suggesting using the additional material, ESPECIALLY since he was NOT using it as the packaging clearly recommended.. and his response was to start yelling at me about how the manufacture is an IDIOT and he's an expert with years of experience and satisfied customers. He was out of control yelling and waving his arms in my face and screaming things like: I've been doing this for years! Who are you going to believe, me, and expert roofer, or some stupid instruction manual? - Still skeptical (about both his methods and sanity), I contacted the manufacturer of the material to ask them about his claims that he was using the material correctly. They said I was in luck, because the foremost expert in the field (who also happened to invent the material in question!) worked for them and was in the office. WHEN I SPOKE WITH THE INVENTOR/EXPERT, HE CONFIRMED THAT GARVEY ROOFING DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. He said that the owner was giving me incorrect information and possibly doing damage to my roof. - When I told the owner of Garvey what the expert had said, he lost his temper, started screaming and acting irate, and would not let me speak at all. Honestly... you had to be there to believe it. He pretty much threw a tantrum and every time I opened my mouth to say something he started yelling out nonsense words like "BA-BA-BA-BA-BA!!!!" Then when I'd stop talking to try to ask him why he was making those noises and not letting me speak, he got quiet when I did.. then started yelling "A-A-A-A-A-A!!!" as soon as I started to speak again. It was RIDICULOUS. - In the end, after LOTS of arguing, phone calls to the inventor, countless annoying conversations with the owner of Garvey, he finally admitted to "not knowing how the material even works. He told me to go hire a subcontractor to fix the job and then we could deduct what I paid the contractor from the final bill. Obviously, I had to explain to him that since HE was the contractor, HE would need hire the SUBCONTRACTOR... not me. I already had a valid contract with him and I was not willing to change it just because he couldn't deliver what he promised. - NOW - 2 years later, my roof looks nice on the outside, but on the inside it looks TERRIBLE.. Materials hanging everywhere, falling off the roof because they were not attached correctly... it's seriously ridiculous! It's funny, I always thought about writing a review on yelp or something, but I've never been on this site until now. I was on for something else, remembered how terrible my experience with Garvey Roofing was and decided to look them up. No surprise that everyone else is bummed too. That why I decided to finally write all this... hopefully someone will read it and save themselves a lot of headaches and wasted money. My advice: DO NOT HIRE GARVEY ROOFING! read more

I work in an industry where "Fake it till you make it" doesn't work. A new hire must be honest about his abilities and experience when he arrives. I can spot the fakers a mile away. They don't last. Within two or three minutes after meeting Tom from Garvey Roofing, at my home I could tell he knew exactly what he was talking about. I had done my due diligence on the type of roof modifications I thought I needed. I was prepared to hear a large estimate and was ready to bite the bullet. I was pleasantly surprised to hear Tom give me the industry pro's opinion rather than just do as I, the amateur desired. His advice made sense. I hired Garvey Roofing to repair damage done to my house roof by the windstorm of 12/1/11. The shingles of the north-facing roof surface had been totally stripped off. Andy Camou and his assistant Matt Benitez came quickly on Friday, 1/20/12, to lay down the felt (using the good quality 30 lb. felt), protecting my roof in case the rain predicted for that weekend materialized. This saved me the extra expense of possible temporary plasticing. Early the next week Andy and Matt installed the shingles, and Andy repaired a couple of existing leaks. I discovered additional wind damage to the south surface of my garage roof on 1/22/12, so they repaired that as well. They took the old blown-off shingles along, for which I am also grateful. I am pleased to be able to recommend Garvey Roofing highly. Andy communicated very well with me, keeping me thoroughly informed as the job progressed. He carefully removed my satellite dish in order to install the roofing materials underneath it, so I didn't have to wait for the satellite technician to remove it. Andy carefully evaluated a couple of pre-existing leaks, determined where they originated, and repaired them. I don't think it's an exaggeration to call Andy a perfectionist. Owner Tom Garvey dropped by, too, and I got the sense that he takes pride in his company providing high quality work. The additional work (garage roof repair) was completed quickly upon completion of the house roof repair. The guy comes out, Thomas Garvey, gives his thoughts onto fixing my roof, sits at my kitchen table and writes up the estimate which seem reasonable. He does say some really stupid things while at my table. I could see that his comments could be grounds for a lawsuit.--Mr. Garvey, I am not your buddy, we are not friends, we don't even have the same sense of humor or tasteless jokes. After about a week ( getting other estimates) I agree to his terms and sign his contract. Then he totally flakes, says there are other people ahead which is understandable but when asked where I was in his queue he refuses to answer. This went on for 4 weeks even though in his contract he says he will provide services within 3-10 days. I went I yelp and saw reviews that exactly expressed what was happing to me and I called him again to get a concrete date or at least to know where in his work we were, he then throws a fit like a 5 year old, griping and complaining. I told him that he had review that were expressing exactly what was happening to me--wait for it folks-- He said he was being extorted and thats why he had the bad reviews--No, Mr. Garvey its because you don't follow through with your contracts. then you complain about your own breaching of a contract. Through his bad humor, lack of responsibility, temper tantrums and bad thought process, it makes me understand that he is just not a matured human being. And you shouldn't hire this guy because he might get a boo boo on your roof, blame you for his mistakes and sue you. read more

I had great experience with Garvey Roofing. Their pricing was less then previous estimates and did I much more thorough job then the previous roofing company. The tech gave a step-by-step explanation of repairs they were going to do and gave me multiple options of what could be done. The installation staff came on time and did a great job. After the job they left the site clean and showed me all the work that was done. What really surprised me was the installation staff fixed a hanging rain gutter that wasn't part of the job, I didn't notice till a few weeks after the job was done. Tom and his crew went beyond my expectations and really did a super job completely rebuilding and roofing a porch roof and overhang that extends the length of my home from the front to the back of the house. Hello, fellow homeowners. I would think twice about doing business with Garvey Roofing. They are just not reliable and credible in my view. I had Garvey roofing fix a leak in my roof that needed repair. It cost about $700. Several years later (3) the leak came back. I called Garvey roofing about the warranty and they agreed that the repair was still under warranty. A day was set for them to come and do the repair but they never arrived and no one called to say they were not going to make it. After several calls and attempts and after the passage for a lot of time... they finally came and fixed the original repair (I am assuming it was fixed but we won't know until it rains and the passage of time). The moral of the story is that... if it was so hard for them to come and do a warranty repair that cost just $700....... just imagine what would happened if I trust them with a job that is more expensive like a total roof replacement. I was in shock that the customer service was so horrible for warranty service. But (not surprising) the service was excellent when I originally called about needing a repair and was given a $700 repair estimate. When you are about to pay for a repair the service is excellent. They make you feel welcomed and well taken care off. But for warranty service...the service plummets.... and you are just turned into a whatever person. Soon, I will getting estimates for a 30 year warranty whole roof replacement for a roof that need to be completely replaced. I had a leak in my roof. I called two other roofs for estimates. One would not guarantee his repair work and the other roofer wanted to sell me a new roof for $16,000. Made an appointment for "Mr. Garvey" to come to evaluate my roof on a Tuesday between 1-4 pm per my conversation with Nico. No one showed, no phone call to reschedule. When I called them a week later to ask what had happened I was told someone would contact me, once again I never received any communication back from the company. I had some reoccuring roof leaks on my flat roof. I had previously called other roofing contractors who were unable to fix the problem - sometimes with the leak coming back the next time it rained after they patched the roof. I called Garvey Roofing based on their reviews and they were able to determine that the problems had to do with drainage. They performed the work and I haven't had any problems since. Not only is the owner, Tom Garvey, a roofing expert with all kinds of licenses, but he has integrity. If you don't really need his services, he will actually tell you rather than try to get your money! I knew that Tom's reputation was excellent so I referred a friend who told me she needed a roof inspection.Tom asked her some questions over the phone, told her what she could easily do to fix the problem. As I've never had the need for a roofer before, I emailed the members of my MOMS Club for recommendations of a roofing company in the area. I had a roof leak on one part of my house that was leaking to my son's bedroom, and another spot on the second floor right where we had an air conditioning unit installed on the roof a year ago. The first email I got in response, was for Garvey Roofing saying they were really happy with the work done on their house. Soon after, another email response saying that Garvey Roofing did a total roof replacement on their home, and they were thrilled with how quickly the work was done and the price was one of the best they were quoted. Then, a third email saying that after I talk to other roofing companies I should call Tom Garvey, and "you'll see right away that he really knows what he's talking about". With three glowing recommendations I was ready to call them for an estimate. So I couldn't believe that I got yet another email from a mom, this time describing Tom's business sense saying "he really wants to make sure the job gets done right, because he builds his business on word-of mouth to friends and family, not on repeat visits!" So I called Garvey, and made an appointment for them to come and inspect my roof, and before the day was through I couldn't believe I got another recommendation for them. By now I'm thinking this is unheard of, as I've now had 5 separate, positive recommendations, for Garvey Roofing. In fact, I received no other recommendations, but only 2 warnings NOT to use certain other roofers. I've had a lot of contractor work done on my home (Remodelled kitchen, bathroom remodel, pool removal, landscaping, etc) and after a couple of burns, and a few successful jobs, you start to get better at telling the real pro's from the handy-men. Tom came out and checked out my roof, and immediately identified the problem area above the bedroom as coming from an improperly woven seam along the joint of my angled roof. He could tell it was done by an inexperienced roofer (which is true, as it was a friend of the family who did it for us originally), and that while it wasn't a terrible job, that it obviously wore before the expected life of the roof. He looked at the rest of our roof and told us our roof looked like it was about 10 years old (I happen to know it was 9 years and 10 months old - but how did HE know that!), in good shape, and should last another 10 years with just a repair on the quadrant of the angled seam. Wow. I was impressed. He went on to check out the small leak on the second floor, and said he didn't find any sealant of any sort around the base of the air conditioning unit where it was drilled into the roof. So he said he would seal all the way around it at no charge, and it was sure to fix the problem. He quoted us a good price. And then, by the way, also mentioned that we should tell our neighbor next door with the clay roof tiles that they should clear out the excessive leaves and the pine cone debris gathering on the roof, or they will probably start to have water back up into the attic with the next rainy season. What?? Who does that?! Apparently Tom does. So is it any surprise, that we signed the contract? The day they came out to do the repair, they arrived at 7:30am as they promised, with a large crew and were done before noon. And I'm happy to say, we made it through one heavy set of rains with no problems to speak of. So, the 5 stars are well earned! read more

I thought I needed a new roof, my existing roof is about 20 years old. I called Thomas from Garvey roofing to give me a estimate, he came out and told me I did not need a new roof just minor repairs in a couple of places. I was shocked because 3 other contractors qouted prices from 7000-16000 dollars for a new roof. His employee came out, took care of the touchups, and accomodated our needs.
