I did not see this dr but he did reply to my review. I reviewed that I was not able to make an appt as the dr was not taking new patients. The dr replied and said his staff was misinformed, he is taking new patients, but his is not accepting any insurance. Most doctors are not, so that is very normal now. I went in after speaking to his office and did find a doctor, but I would certainly recommend mend Dr Cohan. I see that I'm not the first reviewer here, to feel it's hard to convey in words what is exceptional about Dr. Cohan, and his terrific support staff. Yes, Dr. G.'s experience, knowledge, and skills as a physician are hard-won and extraordinary. Reason enough right there, to consider him as your internist. And yes, the network of contacts which he has developed in the LA medical community gives his patients access to facilities and specialists with an ease and timeliness made possible by the goodwill and reputation he's built up over 3+ decades. (This is no small thing when, without a proper introduction, it can be nearly impossible to get past the initial gatekeepers of many a sought-after specialist, or specialized facility). But, then -- there's that less tangible "something". Here is my go at finding the right words: These days, we talk about our "primary care physician", or "healthcare provider". Once upon a time, the words almost universally used were - - family doctor. And the word "family" was there for a reason. People very often had the same family doctor for decades, covering multiple generations. A trip to the doctor was part medical care, and part a chance to visit with a family friend. Trust, warmth, and insight were built up over time, talking about your mutual lives, not just current medical necessities. It was "family" in both directions. All of that takes TIME. Time which the current medical-care model in this country has ruthlessly discouraged and stripped away, in a drive for economy and efficiency. But apparently -- there are still a few family doctors out there, swimming against the tide. Doctor G. is most definitely one of them. He has structured his practice in a way which allows him to spend some real time with his patients. And that changes everything. I became a patient of Gary's a couple of years ago, when my previous practically-forever family doctor finally retired at 80. Gary very quickly became my NEW, trusted family doctor.... for all of the reasons mentioned here, plus his "hilarious heart" (to steal the perfect phrase from a fellow reviewer :-) And I absolutely have to give a shout out, to the three exceptional women who form his support staff, They are all warm, professional, reliable, and .... fun! I saw Dr. C. for years -- before giving up. He's great when you're in his office at an appointment -- a great "bedside" manner and I had great confidence his his advice. But good luck getting his attention when you need to speak with him on the phone to get his POV on his own referrals, test results, etc. I tried for months to get his attention -- basically pleading for his engagement -- by phone, email, and even snail mail. I was ignored for months before he relegated me to find another internist. My theory is that if your doctor won't call you back when you're well and have questions, good luck when you're ill and in a crisis and have questions. read more

I have been a long term patient of Dr. Cohan's, and I think he is a good, competent doctor. This review is in regards to how he treats his staff. Even when he no longer accepted insurance and charged exorbitant rates, I was happy to pay. That was until I found out how cheap he is with his nurses. With the proliferation of information everyone has the data. Whether it's an M.D. and/or access to the best periodicals and medical journals or cutting edge research, the information is out there for anyone who wants to find it. The real question is what does one do with that information? This is what separates the good doctors from great doctors. I've been seeing Dr. Gary for 4 or 5 years now, and he's always been incredible. He's very bright, friendly, knowledgeable and his bedside manner is second to none... but today I was reminded why he is such a great doctor. Over the past week I've been battling a flu-like-virus. I was doing my normal routine of rest, fluids, vitamin c and I was progressing nicely. Until this weekend... I started breaking out in hives. They got worse and worse and unfortunately so did my other symptoms. I was feeling weak, defeated and worried. I saw Dr. Gary this morning and he immediately gave me reassurance, took some blood to be sure and gave me a steroid shot. After some careful questioning he discovered that I was having a allergic response to one of the active drugs in NyQuil. Had he not I would have gone home and taken all the medicine he'd prescribed and I would have taken more NyQuil before bed only to wake up in the same predicament or worse. This was the lifesaver and what makes Dr. Gary a fantastic Doctor. He knows his patients, he cares and he knows the medicine like no one else I know. Dr. Cohan is one of the most amazing people I've ever met. He has been my doctor for almost 10 years now. Although, it is very difficult for me to just call him a doctor. He is like "family" to me and my partner who also sees him. Please let me clarify, I don't mean like the "family" you dread seeing at family gatherings especially Thanksgiving. Think more like a close family friend you want to go have drinks with. But be prepared for him to tell you to limit it to just two. I guarantee you will be hard pressed to find a doctor with a better beside manner. Even those turn your head and cough examinations along with all of the other dreaded south of the border ones don't seem quite so bad here. All joking aside, when you are a patient of Dr. Gary's, you get more than just a doctor who cares. You get a highly qualified physician who runs on-time, doesn't rush you through your appointment, answers questions, and is up-to-date on all of the latest protocols in medicine. He is easily accessible via RelayHealth and can in some instances do a web visit which is a great timesaver. I've been a patient of Dr. Gary's since the days when he was part of a large medical group. I was referred to him as I was tired of a doctor who had appointments available in 3 weeks; not the same day or day after. I wanted a doctor who would return calls, or at least of a staff member return calls. I wanted a doctor who would spend more than 6 1/2 minutes with you and write you a RX to get you going out the door. I wanted a doctor who helped you ask questions you didn't know you should ask. Gary Cohan is all of that, and more. When he left the large medical group, I had a choice, stay with the group or choose to leave and join Gary, and I chose Gary. When I need an appointment, that means I'm sick or there's a problem and I want to see him now...and I can and I do. That means the same day most of the time. I don't have to wait in the lobby only to be transferred to an exam room and wait; I am able to come in at the time designated and I see either his nurse (Marien) or Gary right away. His office is managed very professionally by Mary; and the hassle of insurance form completion is done for you...you sign and you are done. I don't have to worry about spending only 6 1/2 minutes; I am comfortable talking with Gary and he in turn, asks me things I don't know to ask. When I leave and may have a RX, it is called in and when I hit the pharmacy, they have it and I don't have to hassle there either. I have referred 4 friends to Gary and they all remain patients of his as do I. I have the ability to choose my health care, especially my elective care. Gary is most concerned about living well and staying healthy which I find most important in my life. Hard to measure the reward in terms of dollars, but in terms of a healthy life and feeling my best, my vote remains with Dr. Gary and his professional staff. read more

Dr. Gary totally rocks! I travel a lot for work and I was worried that I might be carrying the Coronavirus even though I feel fine. Bigger problem is I need to take care of of my 80 year-old parents who are stuck all alone in their apartment but can't risk getting them sick. Didn't know what to do. Tried to get a test to make sure I wasn't infected but struck out on my own. Called Dr. Gary and not only did he take the time to get us all on the phone and make sure we knew how to protect everybody, but he helped me get a coronavirus test ASAP. Big relief when he called to let me know I was negative. I'm still concerned about my folks but now I can help them with groceries and drug store runs without being super worried about them getting sick or them being totally by themselves. I've been Dr. Gary's patient for over 12 years and he's always been there for me. This time the stakes were much higher so it felt really different. It's a little strange to write a yelp review about a doctor, but Dr Cohan is phenomenal so here I go. I went in to get an exam because my husband wouldn't stop talking about it and had a very thorough conversation and a panel of tests. A week later, Dr Cohan was able to meet with me and follow up with everything, which (sadly for me) involved getting various booster shots for an upcoming trip. Everything written here is true. Dr, Cohan is the best. Prior to being Gary's patient, I avoided medical care, it was always such a hassle. Not so at this practice, scheduling, billing and receiving care are all easy and efficient! Gary's encouragement and reasoning about annual physicals has had me in there regularly for many years, and the discovery of a few issues, since caught early will not reach their dangerous potential. He is also readily available on short notice whenever I am not feeling well. On the few occasions when I have had to see specialists, however reluctantly, his network is just as excellent as he is. Most of whom, without a referral from Gary, I would not have been able to access. And, Dr, Cohan does not refer out and check out, while another Dr. may be treating me, he is still managing my care, keeping in touch with both me and the specialist. He is just a good person and fantastic physician. He is kind, smart, patient, funny, communicative, trustworthy, friendly, approachable...I think you get my point! read more

I have friends who are doctors and, with all due respect to my friends, I'd see Gary over my doctor friends any day. He isn't the kind of doctor you turn to because you're sick and can't avoid a trip to the doctor's office; you go because you have a doctor who can truly manage your health. He'll spend as much time with you as you need, is relentlessly warm and funny, always down-to-earth, listens without judging and just plain knows his stuff. I quite literally trust this guy (and the awesome folks in his office) with my life. He is a bit on the pricey side and doesn't accept insurance (though he will bill your insurance so you see at least a little money back) so be prepared to pay a reasonable amount out of pocket. But if you're fortunate enough to not have to skimp on preventative care I don't think there's a better choice in Los Angeles. read more

I used to go to the Pacific Oaks Medical Group, until Dr. Cohan left. I did not want to continue there, and so I decided to stay in Dr. Cohan's care! And I am so glad that I have. He's always wearing a a smile on his face, and with his nurse and office staff Mary, I always feel at home or one of the family. I never feel rushed at all or uncomfortable, and it's nice to always finish my appt, sitting in front of him at his desk, than sitting on a sterile hospital table/chair/desk...what is that anyway?? They will do your insurance forms for you, and since he is in NO network, you will have to pay a percentage of est. costs. It began when Dr. Cohan was with Pacific Oaks Medical Group, and has only gotten worse since he opened his own practice and our partnership has grown. Imagine a doctor that is on time, greets you with a smile and hug, is genuinely interested in your physical, mental and personal well-being, and is one of the most knowledgeable, up-to-date and empathetic medical professionals you will ever encounter. A doctor that knows how to listen and knows exactly what to say, and has a "bedside manner" that is second to none. Imagine your appointment ending as you sit comfortably with the doctor in his office, rather than awkwardly on the examining table. Imagine a doctor that is accessible by telephone call and email, promptly returning both. A doctor that doesn't rush through an office visit, answers all of your questions, and provides and explains lab and test results promptly. I often tease Dr. Cohan that he's my longest relationship! For nearly 20 years I've driven 50 miles (roundtrip in city traffic) for my medical appointments. I can honestly tell you that he's worth all the trouble! I bring in my "laundry list" of complaints and he patiently goes through each, one by one. You are never rushed with Dr. Cohan, he totally gives of himself to his patients. Never once in all the years that I've gone to him has he ever answered a phone or have been interrupted by one of his staff knocking on the door. Your time with him is your time. Star ratings are best for movies and restaurants, not near enough for someone who is literally responsible for saving your life. Since September of 2007 I had not one but FOUR major medical issues, three of which required advanced surgical procedures. His annual physical is time well spent in reviewing lab work, x-rays, EKGs and proper strategies for a healthy lifestyle. The hour or more he spends with me is greatly appreciated.
