Why am I at a steak food truck? I'll explain.... Gary's Steaks made its Park Ave debut earlier this summer along 47th street amongst a variety of different food trucks. For me, I previously ate at several of those food trucks. This one stood out because of its lines. I looked at the menu and saw 3 different veggie options. After spending a ton of time contemplating what to do, I figured let's go ahead and try this place out. I got the chipotle falafel hoagie. For $9, it doesn't seem like an awful deal. The hoagie itself is quite big itself. Only bummer part was that it was overloaded with hot peppers. Made it quite hard to eat at times because the peppers were overloaded in the hoagie. Great cheese steak, I'm definitely going to be back. Pretty fast, I think it was about 5 min for my order to be ready. The beef was super juicy and tender - I know authentic philly cheesesteak is not about a hard sear but is a gentle cook. Gary's does this perfectly. The beef is cooked through and rather than a roasty maillard flavor, it's got a sweet beefiness. The juice soaks into the bread, the onions are sweet and softened but not caramelized, and the combo is perfect. There's a nice hint of black pepper as well and the salt level is spot on in my opinion. I got sharp provolone but they offer cheese whiz and American. The provolone is stretchy and nicely melted, stands up well to the beef. I think the American would bring in a more milky richness if that's the way you want to go read more

At the royal palms the food truck du jour was this place. Didn't actually notice it much later at night that there were food options available. Finally wakes over to the truck and decided on sharing a few nachos with our very hungry large group. Talked to the very nice man in the truck. He was the server, cashier and cook. Man of many talents. Got our very plain relatively bland round tortilla chips with pumped nacho cheese. Nothing really to write home about but the guy in the truck was quite nice. read more

It's hard to compare a cheesesteak from anywhere to ones from Philadelphia, but Gary's was a nice substitute. The truck was parked right near my work office on Old Slip in the FiDi and I had seen it there a number of times. I always saw a long line here so there must've been something good about it. The menu was pretty simple with a few cheesesteaks on the menu (Mushroom Steak, Pizza Steak, Everything Steak) and French Fries for a side. Since it was my first time here, I thought I'd go with the original, the cheesesteak with grilled onions with cheese whiz on it. Compared to Philadelphia, the cheesesteak was much smaller, BUT the quality was really good! The bread was a bit thick, but there was plenty of steak and cheese whiz mixed in. The quality of the meat was good and I liked that they smothered it with a decent amount of whiz. I was also surprised at how much steak there was in the sandwich! I was roaming around contemplating what to eat when I came across Gary's truck. I got the mushroom cheesesteak with wiz. The wait for food preparation was only a few minutes. There was a decent amount of mushrooms and steak in a large hero. The only thing I would have preferred would be for the bread to be toasted to a nice crisp. Stopped by for lunch. Awful experience here and definitely will not be going back even though the truck is parked right across the street from my office. Food took about 30 minutes, I waited while people who ordered after me got their food. Not a problem, it happens - when I asked there was no apology or recognization, just "it's coming". When i finally received my food, the order was incorrect. There is no order or system in process at this place. Just a two man show that is horribly run. The food was not good either. Unfortunately it's very hit or miss. The one on 46th street had decent cheesesteaks. Nothing to brag about though, pretty juicy at least. However, the one on 49th stunk, the meat was completely dried out. The fries here however were just meh. A bit disappointing considering the price ($15 for a cheesesteak and $10 for the cheese nachos). The cheesesteak was ok but I did not like how the base cheese is nacho cheese. Yes I know you can order provolone but still your basic go to cheese should NOT be nacho cheese. Now lets get to the nacho which was one side salsa (the peach and mango one that I KNOW is from Costco and nacho cheese). They should not use the peach mango salsa as the sweet tang does not really go with the spicy nacho cheese. Better off as using a saltier salsa. Steak itself were good, nicely seasoned and a good balance of steak, mushroom and onion. Fries were very disappointing, tasted more like Costco frozen rather than hand cut. for $10 a sandwich, you should be expecting awesomeness. However, while tasty, this sandwich falls short of that. First off you get a slim hoagie that if hungry you can scarf down in 5 mins tops. The meat (broken up pieces) is juicy, but is not substantial. Most places where you get a cheesesteak offer a mammoth hero with loads of fillings.Also, it's great this is made to order, but the wait can be excruciating. Okay, not great. I got the combo, which gave me a sandwich, a water, and fries for $13 which felt like a fair price in midtown. Unfortunately it was both dry and under seasoned, and the fries were limp and terribly greasy. It had good potential but fell flat, even for a food truck. read more

Tried this place out since it's new to downtown on old slip and water st. The truck was managed by two guys and they didn't seem to get the orders straight. Then I got a sorry cheesesteak with onions and peppers. It was a sprinkle of meat on a soggy bun. Very little flavor and half the meat was dry and crispy as if being cooked for a while before ordered. The only reason they get an added star is because they were quick. Will never try again. I housed this Philly cheesesteak so quick and that's not talking bad about the size! I order the everything Philly cheesesteak (no mushrooms) with marina (which is a must, which they gave to me for free, which was also nice of them) after walking down the street and opening my sandwich, I realized they forgot to put marinara on it, so I went back and they put it on with pleasure and gave me a free order of fries, without me complaining or being in a bad mood at all!
