After some beginning exercises, you get to pick whatever you want to paint. I have never seen anyone leave with a bad painting. I don't even know how Tom does what he does, but he manages to coax the best out of every student. I've been going for three years now. I had never taken painting lessons before. I'm always surprised by how good my paintings look. My classmates have all created really excellent work. Some of my fellow students are art teachers. Some are art students putting together portfolios. Most of us are just hobbyists. The classes are de-stressing and fun. They always go too fast, even though they are 3 hours. I highly recommend these classes for anyone who has ever wanted to paint. I can't speak for the other classes, but there other types of art taught like sculpture and fashion design. The work I've seen from those students is really terrific too. I'm no Monet, but I've included three photos of my work so you can see what to expect in the way of results. The space is beautiful, bright, and really cute, with so many different candles and fragrances displayed throughout. The experience was fun and interactive from start to finish. We got to smell all of the different fragrances, choose our favorites, and blend them together to create our own custom scents. There were so many options that narrowing them down was probably the hardest part! I ended up creating a vacation-inspired scent with sandalwood, Coconut Margarita, and Vacay Me Please, and I loved how it turned out. You also get a free drink with the experience. I chose the lychee drink and it was really good! It was a nice little addition while we were making our candles. The staff was friendly and walked us through the entire process while still giving us room to experiment and create something that was actually ours. One of my favorite parts is that they save your candle blend to your profile, so if you love what you created, you can reorder the exact same scent in the future. This was such a cute anniversary date and something different from just going out to dinner. When we arrived, we were the only guests there and were greeted by a young employee who was pleasant, but seemed unsure of the process herself and appeared to be following a script to guide us. We selected our fragrance notes and brought the bottles back to the counter, only to then be told we were only supposed to bring the scent strips. It was a small thing, but it added to the feeling that the experience wasn't being clearly explained or guided. Once we sat down to actually create our fragrances, we really needed more help understanding how to build and balance a scent. Instead, there were periods where our host was texting, seemingly trying to get guidance from someone else. Neither my husband nor I felt confident about what we were creating, and unfortunately we both ended up leaving with fragrances we didn't really like. Our package also included a drink, and when my husband asked about it, we were told she was under 21 and therefore unable to pour it. I completely understand that she legally could not serve alcohol, but if that is part of the package being sold, I feel there should have been someone present who could actually provide the full experience we paid for. What was supposed to be a fun, romantic anniversary activity ended up feeling awkward and rushed, and by the end we honestly just wanted to leave. I think the concept is wonderful, but for an experience like this, especially at this price point, the person hosting really needs to be knowledgeable and confident enough to guide guests through fragrance building from beginning to end. I hope this was simply an off day, because the idea has so much potential, but unfortunately our experience was disappointing.

Great 20min glass blowing class! We enjoyed getting to build a large, beautiful item. A few things…read moreto note: - most items cannot be built as a couple/together. I called ahead & asked about booking 1 slot/item for 2 people, and was told that's okay. When we got there they clarified that only certain items can be built by 2 people (fish, turtle, flower), but they allowed us to also built the vase together. That means if you do this as a date night/group activity, the other person will sit on the side while you build your item. I believe they host couple specific nights (or you can choose one of the few items that is partner friendly). - this is a QUICK guided activity. There wasn't any pre-education on glass blowing, techniques, advice, etc. You are allowed to pick up to 3 colors and then you basically follow the teachers instructions for each step with heavy assistance from the teacher on each step. This isn't a class for someone who's wanting to learn glass blowing basics, be creative, or do most of the process themselves. It's VERY guided and directed. Granted, it takes people decades to learn large scale glass blowing, so I understand why it's designed that way. But if you're looking for more creative freedom/independence, I'd recommend checking out Glass Bubble in Miami. - In addition to the above point, you're not really sure how to make the piece "good". For example, our vase had a ton of bubbles and I'm not sure there's anything we could've done differently to prevent that (and we weren't warned about it). Overall though, this is a cool art activity and you get exposure to some of the tools of glass blowing while getting to go home [the next day] with a cool item!

They had ample availability and you would be taught by a skilled artist. The studio is located at Young Park, in a expansive open studio, w bleachers allowing you to observe the work taking place by the master glass blowers. Each session is 20 mins long and priced depending on the piece you would like to sculpt. I heard someone say they bought a Groupon, so maybe that's an option for another session. The class goes by pretty quickly, but the artists usually give you detailed instructions on the entire process, guiding and cheering you on. Mitchell made the experience easy-going and was supportive of my rough pulling of the glass lol he saved my piece and made it into a wild delicate flower. The final product gets to cool for 12hrs and the next day you get to pick up your masterpiece. Enjoy the process.

I got to have a lovely chat with the owner Claudia. She sells all sorts of amazing vintage items and clothing. During my visit they were having a pop up jewelry event with pieces that would look right at home in your grandmother's jewelry box. If you wear clip on earrings, she had a wonderful selection along with beautiful brooches. Some of the pieces, like a box of rings were as inexpensive a one dollar. Don't forget to look up while you are shopping and check out Claudia's shoe art installation on the ceiling. Besides all of the unique things she sells, Claudia also does art classes. Claudia got the name for her store from a invention she created called Chaos for Comfort. The instructor was always 5 steps ahead of the class and never once stopped to help us catch up, he also refused to go back to review anything. The owner of the shop just stayed over in the corner watching as the entire class complained in frustration. Every single painting came out looking nothing like the example because we had to just improvise. It sucks we had to pay for such a bad experience. I would definitely do another paint night- just not with The Velvet House.

In all my time living in South Florida and my interest in Art and Culture, and the many art shows,…read moregalleries, and museums I've been to, I've never been to the Arts and Culture Center of Hollywood... Until now. Located in a preserved, historic building which was built in the 1920s, you might miss it if you weren't looking for it. It's on the edge of a residential area, and just east of Young Circle, so it gets a little lost in it's surroundings, but it's definitely worth exploring. The parking lot is free, and there's also street parking available. Entrance is $10 for adults, discounted for kids and seniors, and free with membership. The Center holds three exhibition spaces downstairs and one upstairs. The main exhibit space is rather large, which you can tell by looking at the current exhibition (ANIMALS), which showcased various media depictions and representations of animals. Behind the main space, there are also desks and drawings from patrons or the students at the school. There is also an artistic garden which may be a lot more enjoyable when the temperatures cool down. I met Joanna who did an amazing job of providing me with updates about events, history, and meet the artist days, which I believe are also free. I will definitely be back to check out other exhibitions and hopefully be able to attend an exhibition opening or two in the near future. The best word for this museum is eclectic…read more While in Florida for a few weeks, the honey and I treated my MIL to a guest pass with our reciprocal NARM membership benefits. Check in wasn't smooth, but the space is definitely much larger than it appears from the outside. The honey enjoyed Environmental Futures III on the first floor and I enjoyed the 'Somewhere I Belong' installation and the community art upstairs, which was fantastic. They also had a piece by a local glass blower Brenna who participated in the Netflix show Blown Away. The piece had an inverted color scheme, but was otherwise a duplicate to the piece she created when she was eliminated. I would have loved to have seen an entire section dedicated to her pieces because beyond the glass and the art upstairs, the general curation wasn't really to my taste. All in all, the service was upbeat and helpful, but with general admission at $7, ($4 for students) I would call the experience slightly overpriced unless you're here under NARM.

DIY Body Butter & Karaoke Event…read more I had such a fun and unique time at the DIY Body Butter & Karaoke event! The setup was creative. It was a perfect mix of self-care and dope vibes! Making my own body butter was easier (and way more fun) than I expected. We created our own body butter and had a variety of scents to choose from. The host was amazinggggg! She was very informative, down to earth and really nice. She definitely knows her stuff. The man who hosted karaoke was a total vibe! Once everyone finished their creations, the real fun kicked off (KARAOKE) and the energy completely shifted -- lots of laughs, singing, and good crowd interaction. WE TURNED UP!!!! It was the kind of event that felt both relaxing and lively at the same time. If you're looking for something different to do with friends -- something hands-on, social, and full of personality -- I'd definitely recommend it. They actually have different DIY events like hand soaps and wine making. We will definitely be back sooner than they think. FYI - Bring a portable fan cause all that dancing and moving around you will get hot!
