    Beef Goulash: €20,50
    Paul V.

Sure, Ofenloch is a historic restaurant in town (and as a result caters clearly to tourists) with a solid atmosphere and good service, but the food didn't quite blow me away. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? While the tables are a bit close together to the point where you might find your conversations blending with those of the party next to you, the historic atmosphere at Ofenloch is good and is well complimented by the service. Our food came out quickly and I was able to make due with what is admittedly only elementary German. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Ofenloch leans on the expensive side, and as a result my small to medium portion of beef goulash with some peppers and knoedel came to a comparatively steep €20,50. Not the end of the world by any means, but not cheap. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? This was good, but not great beef goulash. Flavorful? Sure. Tender? Also sure, but the peripheral knoedel was weak and I just quite didn't understand why there was such a distinction between the meat itself and the gravy that ended up not really serving a purpose besides making the knoedel a bit more edible. Single Star. Star 5: Would you be excited to go back? There are simply too many good restaurants in Vienne to venture back to Ofenloch. No Star.

Old Viennese restaurant in the historic center

A recent lunch at Ofenloch was not a pleasant experience at all. And that overshadowed the good food. Let me explain why I can only give Ofenloch two stars. Ofenloch is an old Viennese restaurant in the historic center of Vienna. It caters largely to tourists and advertises in many tourist publications. That was ok for me because I wanted to finally check it out after all these years as another lunch possibility when I give tours of old Vienna. Well I won't be using this restaurant for a lunch stop. First of all my lunch lasted an hour and forty-five minutes - way too long. When I first ordered, I wanted to order off the special lunch menu but was told I was too late. I said, "What? I have another full 30 minutes to order off the lunch menu according to the times listed on the menu you put in front of me." The waitress then said ok. My first course was a salad. It took over 35 minutes for it to arrive at the table. The restaurant was not busy in mid-afternoon. No one ever checked in with me or even apologized for the long delay. That is not acceptable for a salad course at lunch. At one point during the wait, both waitresses disappeared outside for 10 minutes. I presume they were setting up the outside eating area which hadn't been open because of an earlier rain shower. btw - The salad was delicious and ample with ham and asparagus complimenting the usual flavors. Now it was another wait for my entrée - although not quite as long as for the salad. This was also very tasty as I enjoyed the Fried Carp and Potato Salad. I also finally discovered where the salt and pepper were on the table - tucked away in a round container that looked like a candle holder. I only discovered this when the table next to me asked for salt and pepper and were shown where it was on their table. Anyway there was a wait for dessert but each wait was getting shorter. The Buchteln with Marrillen preserves inside was again delicious. Finally I got the check and paid and left Offenloch an hour and forty-five minutes after I entered. Talk about a leisurely lunch, this was a v-e-r-y leisurely lunch with two waitresses that weren't that friendly or responsive. Now when I paid the bill, I noticed two charges which I don't really like very much. I just wanted and asked for a glass of water with my lunch but it came in an already opened small bottle and I was charged 3 Euro. Vienna has maybe the best quality tap water in the world - straight from the Alps. I should be able to just have a glass of it. Because the bottle was served with no cap, I don't even know if the water in the bottle wasn't actually Viennese tap water. I'm glad I didn't ask for more water because I probably would have been charged another 3 Euro. Then there is the infamous Gedeck charge occasionally used in Vienna and this was again 3 Euro. Usually a Gedeck charge is associated with the bread and spreads served at the beginning of the meal ... but I didn't eat any of them and don't think I should be charged for that. The waitress did take this off of the bill. Anyway, I won't be going back to Ofenloch or taking any people there whom I give tours to or even recommending it. That's a shame because the food was excellent and deserves a much higher rating. But the timing and service and extra charges were another story altogether ... and there are many other fine choices in Vienna!

Great service. So much history in this space, you can just feel it upon entering. Delicious Viennese dishes and surprisingly good wines from Austria. Make sure to have a reservation because they turned away several people!

Rating: 92/100 pts Though I ate here a little while back, the memory of the meal has remained with me so strongly that I feel I can still write an accurate review. Be aware that it took me a full THREE attempts to even be able to eat here. The first time, we were turned away for not having reservations, the restaurant being completely full. Coming a little earlier the following day, the entire shop was boarded up and closed. (Reflective hint: Closed on Sundays.) Finally, on my last night in Vienna, they were able to seat us. And I'll say it was completely worth all the trouble: Ofenloch was the greatest meal I had during my week in Austria, and one of the more memorable meals I've had in my life. First of all, this is a historic building, originally having opened in the 1700s. People from Franz Schubert to Leonard Bernstein have dined here, and Mozart composed his masterpiece "Abduction from the Seraglio" in a house just down the block. You feel the history from the moment you walk in, traversing across the creaky floorboards amongst the dignified furnishings. The complimentary breads and assorted butters served at the beginning were fantastic, and difficult to stop eating. For my main dish, I ordered the traditional veal wiener schnitzel, which was the greatest I've ever had by quite a large margin. The breading was crisp yet delicate, the jam top class, and even the lemon was prepared in a nice net to hold in the seeds. The buttered parsley potatoes also stood out as being the most delicately prepared of the vast amount of potatoes I'd already consumed this trip. The quality of the meal up until this point convinced me to order the vanilla cream apple strudel for dessert, which was also more delicate than decadent. Service was impeccable all the way through, and the only time in my life I felt like I was part of the Austrian nobility. Prices are slightly higher than what I paid for my average meal in Vienna, but considering the quality, were more than worth it. I recommend incorporating Ofenloch into your schedule, making a reservation if possible.

In the heat of Vienna city center this is a great place. We had veal schnitzels and potato salad, the food is very well cooked, service was perfect! Good amounts and flavor. It's a very original place for friends gathering or a special date, makes a difference!

Found this cozy spot a few blocks off the Stadtpark and figured I'd give it a shot. So glad I did. it was pretty packed when we got ther, we were able to get a high top table after just a few minutes wait. Ordered the beef tartare and schnitzel. Be forewarned, they don't skimp on the portions here. The tartare was delicious and came with a salad and about a half of stick of butter, which was interesting. Schnitzel was big enough to feed at least two people and left me feeling like I had finally experienced a real local meal. Wine was also great and made me wish I could have stayed there drinking it all night. But alas, I had an early flight to catch the next day...

Quite tight seating. Restrooms are not accessible by people with limited mobility. No baby changing stations. The food is okay. The schnitzel was fine and so was lamb. Okay to eat but not memorable. Caprese salad was tasty. In conclusion, if you are passing by and hungry, feel free to stop by. If you are looking for a memorable lunch/dinner experience, plan to visit a different establishment.

The place was huge inside, bigger than expected from the outside. It was packed with people in a good way and the decor was tasteful and inviting. The wait staff were really friendly and attentive and visited just often enough to make sure we had what we needed. The food was great, and the classic schnitzel was massive but thin enough that it didn't feel overwhelming to eat. I paired it with the potato salad that included greens and both were excellent. If you're getting the schnitzel I suggest the longenberry preserve because the schnitzel itself is on the blander side.

*******READ FINE PRINT ON MENU*********…read more I have issues with this place. My review will not change the trajectory of how this place operates. However, it is unlike any place in the world I have ever visited. We were seated at a table that was meant for 6 people and got taken down to two people as there was another couple sitting there. The place for lunch was absolutely slammed, so it is obviously a popular spot. Without asking, they drop bread off at the table. With a place of this atmosphere it was expected, as this is what I would expect out of a finer food establishment. The schnitzel was very light and had plenty of flavor. No other sides came with the schnitzel so I had the potato salad which was good, but different. The beef stroganoff did have an immense amount of flavor. They lacked the very small amount of noodles that are given with this dish. The fastest uninterrupted service we got was when I waited and finally asked for the check. They were quick to give me a dessert/after food drink menu. They were quick to be on top of me to see if I wanted anything. I declined and paid the bill. What I will tell you is, that is completely OUTRAGEOUS is the charge listed as 2 - Gedeck. A quick review told me that it is a "Cover Charge" at a euro rate of 4.90 per person. A further Google review told me that it is also because they placed bread on the table (I do not know what is factual). Regardless of whatever the charge is or whatever they want to call it, I have never ever ever paid a "Cover Charge/Gedek" charge to occupy a restaurant. If this was a late night spot that I decided to pop bottles at or had "dancers" at the business, I could get there, but for a sit down lunch, what a complete utter rip off. This in itself would cause me never to return to this establishment. Make sure if you eat here, that you read the fine print or look at my pictures. They have very small print that notifies the consumer of them charging cover charge as well as what they charge for sharing of some dishes. All I can say is be mindful and do not be taken back like we were when the bill comes.
