We had fried shrimp, flounder, BBQ chicken, and wings. The BBQ chicken was meh (simply covered in a bunch of sauce). The shrimp and flounder were ok. One of my six wings was really raw in the middle. I told the hostess and she acknowledged it, but did not do anything to remedy the situation. It would also be nice to have salt and pepper on the table for our baked potato. Make sure you make a reservation if you want to come to Gateway, we made one for 5:15 our table was ready when we arrived at 5. While we were waiting for our food many other people were trying to get a table and were turned around for no reservations even though they had plenty of tables empty. We left at 5:45 and there were groups of people coming in for 6pm reservation. They do try to get the food out fast and it has been fresh and very good but there's always those tables that just sit around and talk. If you not eating get up and let someone else be able to eat and the restaurant and waitresses can make more money. It's lint and Friday night so the wife and I got the fried shrimp they are a goto because they are very good. They don't have a lit of breading and the coleslaw and fries are very good, you can get any other side you would like. We we're only in the area for the weekend so we went to other places on different nights. This was all of our favorite places. We will be back. 6//11/2021 update. First time here for lunch and first time eating in the bar. Lunch menu is different than dinner menu but still varied. Today the special was snakehead bites; didn't try them. Five of us went to dinner. Upon being seated, we were told there were no mashed potatoes, scalloped potatoes, nor crab legs. We ordered fried pickles and jalapeño poppers. These were very good. Two people ordered cream of crab soup. This was a disappointment. We asked our server if the recipe had changed because it tasted different and was not very good. Three people ordered side salads and they were good. One person ordered fried shrimp and that was good. One person ordered Broiled Scallops in garlic butter. That was very good. One person ordered the Cobb Salad. It had a lot of lettuce and very little of everything else that makes up a true Cobb Salad.This was a disappointment. Two people ordered the Chicken Parmesan special. The chicken was nothing more than chicken tenders from the kids' menu. The pasta had very little flavor and was a disappointment. Visited The Gateway on Wednesday, July 26. Food was terrific, and when the bill came the price left me astounded -- very modest price for excellent food and wonderful service. Spoke with the owner-operator, who is wonderfully warm and friendly. This restaurant really cares about its patrons, and provides a very personal touch. It is clearly a favorite with local neighbors. Normally, I am very picky about posting a five-star review. This establishment wins it because it won my heart as well as providing a wonderful quality-price balance. I will definitely be going back. My meal was the oysters casino (I was going to get fried oysters but they were not available because the proprietor had not been sufficiently happy with the size and quality of the fryers from her supplier and sent them back), along with a wonderful tangy-sweet cucumber salad and their signature sweet potato casserole. My dinner companion had a beautiful and filling chicken chef salad. I don't usually order dessert, but I was impressed enough to order the bourbon pecan pie, which I got a la mode (another almost-never-do): it was warm, scrumptuous ,and came with two dollops of ice cream plus whipped cream. This restaurant is a gem. Not much atmosphere, but the rest more than makes up the difference. If you're in Calvert, check it out! read more

Okay so normally I rate 5 stars for places with outstanding food or services. However this little whole in the wall really impressed me. It seriously looks like it could be anything from the outside. Once you walk in... still unsure of the place. But the service and quality of food was fantastic- especially when you take a look at the bill! A hidden gem for great food! It's a bit off the beaten path and easy to miss, but worth the stop. We were down in this neck of the woods for the Calvert County Fair, but rain put a damper on the fair, causing us to look for dinner elsewhere. Yelp reviews encouraged us to give Gateway a try. The review that said, "What it lacks in atmosphere, it makes up in quality of food," said it all. It's the kind of restaurant I used to find growing up in small towns. Family-friendly with a small community atmosphere, they serve great tasting food in a fast and friendly manner in a setting reminiscent of a VFW Hall. It was so loud that we had trouble communicating at times. That said, the food was delicious and the service was fast and friendly! read more

Hidden gem in Broomes Island! The lunch menu offers a variety of different items that are always on point and the staff is super friendly! Love that this place provides a drive in for quick purchases and pickups! I personally haven't tried the Prime Rib but word of mouths says it's the best in the county! Wow what a gem of a place that you probably would find it hard to locate. Came here because I heard so many great things about the prime rib which they only offer Thursday through Sunday. However before I tried the Prime Rib, I had the crabmeat bisque. Wow what a very delicious start before the big meal. This soup was very smooth, rich and chunky because it had lots of crabmeat in it for a cup which was the size I asked for. It was indeed very delicious. They also gave me some cheese and crackers before the big meal which was great as well. Then came my meal finally. I had it with the sweet potato casserole and the fresh steamed broccoli for my sides. The Prime Rib was on point and absolutely delicious. Cooked to perfection which was medium rare. The meat was very tender and soft and the horseradish and what appeared to be au jus for the sauce added more great flavor to the meat. The sweet potato casserole was probably one of the best I ever had. It wasn't like some that you are used which is usually marshmallows along with some cinnamon sprinkles. This one was very creamy, on point sweet and it had walnuts on it. Super fresh and delicious. So was the steamed broccoli. Really enjoyed my meal at this place as well as the service. read more

Very surprising! Today was the first day open at 50% since closing indoors seating for Covid-19. I went there and was seated pretty soon after arriving. I went there for carry out.I ordered and drank a beer while I waited. Before I finished the second beer my food was ready. This place is a hidden gem. It's not fancy or pretentious, but the staff is super friendly and welcoming and the food is amazing. Even the kids' chicken tenders are hand breaded and fresh. A great little place with very tasty home cooking. I love everything I have eaten here....and I have tried almost everything. My favorite the parmesan crusted pork chops (2), sweet potato casserole, steamed broccoli, and stewed tomatoes (not too sweet but perfect). Also, the oysters are insanely good (fried and casino are my fav's). Very nice staff and owners. My outage guys (vacation rentals) come every year and stop in during their stay and they all have such great things to say about Gateway's food, service and hospitality. Local vibe at this place. The crackers with butter and imitation cheese that you are first given is interesting. Staff is friendly and knows the community (sits down with folks at their tables to chat) I got the fish and chips... flounder. unfortunately the breading was awful. Fish was good however. We felt like going out to eat, but wanted to try to find a locally owned restaurant to try. This one came up in our search and had great ratings, so we decided to give it a try. While the food was very mediocre, the service was surprisingly great. We ordered the loaded tater tots ($7- just bacon and cheese, not really "loaded") for an appetizer- they were okay. For our meals, the fried shrimp platter ($18) and the combination fried seafood platter ($25, recommended by our waitress- flounder, clam strips, oysters, crab cake and shrimp). My husband wasn't impressed with the shrimp or the French fries. I wasn't crazy about anything on mine, either. It all tasted like pre-frozen seafood with medium-heavy breading. For sides, we had the broccoli, Mac 'n Cheese and lima beans. The veggies were cooked/ steamed with minimal to no seasoning. The mac 'n cheese was the best part of the meal. It definitely tasted homemade. Kinda sad that this hidden spot didn't work out well for us, but it was worth the try and- as I said before- our waitress was very attentive and great. read more

Delicious and laid back! Gateway is a little hole in the wall restaraunt that is well worth seeking out. Whether dining in or grabbing take out from their to-go window, you will not be disappointed. Their prime rib is the best you will find around town and the price is equally amazing. They have a long list of sides that vary a bit from time to time so don't be nervous to ask. Grab an appetizer while there such as the amazing coconut shrimp or the delicious crab dip. After eating their coconut shrimp steer clear of the other shrimp dishes because the flavor will not hold up after the sweet rich coconut battered shrimp. Their chesapeake dishes are worth the money as well. The only thing I would go somewhere else for is a crab cake. It is a good crab cake but Jerry's Place has an even better one with jumbo lump meat and it is just down the road. Support local business! read more
