I was amazed at just how much I enjoyed the food at the gateways Inn. We went on a Saturday night, where there was a wonderful pianist filling the place with music. The tablecloth tables ina traditional New England setting were just magnificent. And it felt elegant and nice to be there. The food was exceptional and innovative, and prepared perfectly. And to my surprise, the prices were very reasonable. I had the Loch Duart Salmon with buttered corn, confit shallot, blistered cherry tomatoes and a basil puree. I enjoyed each bite. The pork cheek ragu was amazingly different with broccoli rabe pesto. Get the local cheese plate as an appetizer or dessert. You will love it. The only downside was slow service. We went at the end of August which means the summer students who usually staff restaurants in the Berkshires went back to school. These servers who served me seemed to be new hires and were still learning. So, I am giving them a break. I will surely be back! read more

Good location in center of Lenox and had great potential but fell short. The whole place was a little shabby, and although the room was comfortable, we never got the overhead light to work. Everything was outstanding from the service to the plating to the flavors of the food. My sister and I had the cucumber yogurt soup. . It was a flavor bomb. We also had a pan seared fish, and I had the pasta bolognese. I love this place. I can't wait to return. The decor is very pleasant. Sound level is good. Our waiter Marc was outstanding. This is a very nice Inn, and the staff was great. There was one major drawback (for us): the light shades are very transparent, letting in a lot of daylight at sunup. This kept waking us up very early each morning. This should be pretty easy for them to fix. The food was very good at the restaurant, and the location is excellent for Lenox area activities (6 minutes from Tanglewood). They have two chargers for EVs (a Tesla and another type). read more

I can't not write about an experience this bad. It would almost be funny, if it hadn't been (or tried to be) a celebration for a dear friend. From the moment my party arrived (celebrating a birthday) and was walked to the back dining room, with a view of the parking lot, things went from bad to worse. Our server was completely confused, lost, and uncomfortably anxious. She took our drink order. It took over 20 minutes to get those drinks (3 glasses of wine and one margarita and the restaurant was not crowded at all). In the meantime we were served bread that was basically stale hot dog buns that had been reheated so they were hard enough to chip a tooth on. Our server told us she needed to read the specials because she couldn't remember everything. That's fine. I've waited tables. I get it. Except there was only one special. Actually there were two, but she only mentioned that to tell us they were out of it. When our food finally arrived it was all wrong. Entrees came out as appetizers and vice versa. The food runners put the wrong thing down in front of every person. The kitchen had split dishes that were not meant to be split, which the server at least acknowledged was probably her fault. What wasn't her fault was how lousy the food was. I had a greasy salad with a dry chicken breast. My friends had fair to poor entrees. Finally, while we had mentioned several times that it was someone at the table's birthday, the dessert arrived with no candle. And the server referred to everyone at the table as "ladies" several times, even though one of our party was a gentleman in a suit jacket. I guess the long hair confused her? Or just everything else. At these prices, this place has to do better. I will not be returning, but I hope they get their act together and actually train the poor people working there. Reviewing the restaurant for our group of eight, for dinner in between performances at Tanglewood. Everything we had was excellent, mainly the appetizers. Chicken liver mousse outstanding, so light and flavorful, as well as artisanal cheeses, eggplant caviar and beet tart. Burgers were solid and fries served with aioli. Radicchio salad was filling, spring vegetables a braised mix of carrots, peas and squash, and cold soup was yogurt-cucumber. What a beautiful historic property! This B&B is nestled in the Berkshire mountains and offers gorgeous private bedrooms with high end bedding and beautiful furnishing. We even had a fireplace in our room! The bathroom was gorgeous too! I loved the thick lush robes and slippers! Classy touch! The home was Mr Proctor's summer home (of proctor and gamble!). Just imagining all the people who walked through the front door so many years ago was intriguing to me. The sitting rooms were well appointed and the bar was beautiful with all the woodwork and cozy seating areas. The restaurant was beautiful and served the most amazing breakfast. We had the omelet that was served with a beautiful fresh green salad which I've never had served with breakfast. They made me fresh decaf coffee which was so smooth and made me feel like vacation and relaxation were in this mug! The staff was very friendly too. The outdoor dining space was beautiful and peaceful with the lush landscape. We will definitely stay here again! read more

We had a delightful and delicious dinner, and would definitely return. The ambiance was terrific - cozy room with fireplace and soft lighting. Our waitress was fabulous - very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Our meals were delicious, artistically presented, substantial and reasonably priced. I had a bourbon house special cocktail that was a expertly balanced. The butternut squash pumpkin bisque was divine and the homemade croutons were the perfect complement. My Hungarian goulash made with juicy short ribs over parmesan risotto was sublime, and my husband's savory pot pie was equally delicious and beautifully served in a cast iron pan. The food was good, but the atmosphere did not match. We were celebrating a special day that ended up being blah. We were seated in the "lower level" that was chilly with people cleaning or closing chairs out the window. We arrived right at opening. There were lovely tables in the front room. When we left the front tables were still not occupied. When I asked why we were seated at the lower level I was told there were reservations. Disappointed to be seated in an empty lack-luster room when there were lovely tables near the fireplace and piano. Probably will not return. I am cynical and not one to grant 5 stars without justification. Except to get what you pay for. As far as bed n breakfast this historic inn set the highest of standards. The cleanest of not only the accommodations, but the ambiance feels eloquent and well decorated. The food superb and unique, a well stocked wine cellar and whiskey bar not excepted. I was fortunate to hear live music in the acoustically correct lounge by professional musicians with a 5 member band called 3Ds and me. While the lounge was small, I was told they can accommodate up to 50 guests and have had many wedding and special occasions here. If you have a special occasion you want to plan and be treated like royalty, I strongly suggest you give this place a try. The staff is personal and well qualified to fulfill your needs. We just had a lovely dinner here last night. The new ownership group has freshened up the place a bit but kept its charm. The wait staff did an excellent job. Chef Ron stopped by to make sure all was well. He has worked at the best restaurants in the Berkshires and The Gateways is fortunate to have him now. His chicken special with herbed gnocchi was outstanding. I had a risotto with Crawfish in a gumbo style which was fabulous. Hot fresh rolls. On Sunday, Oct 16, my beau and I tried to get into other restaurants in Lenox and they were all full. He suggested going to Gateways Inn. I'm so glad he did! There was plenty of space and the hamburger we both had was, hands down, the best burger I've ever had. The bun was like a flatbread that had been grilled. The burger was delicious and the whole meal was simply awesome. In fact, we are both going there again tonight as we've been craving the burger ever since! Comedy of errors -Mold issue -A man from the adjoining suite entered our room while we were in bed -restaurant and bar were still not functional and remained closed entirety of our stay First night -no internet -no tv service -no cell phone service -busted smoke detector -no hot water -no ironing board. -rug was bunched up and a trip hazard. ( I tripped twice). This wouldn't be acceptable for a red roof inn much less for a $700 a night 2 night stay. Dined here last night with a reservation while we were spending a couple of days in the area. Evidently the restaurant has only recently reopened as the menu was billed as a "bar" menu and fairly limited. No matter. When we arrived, there was a jazz combo playing in the dining area next to the bar. No way would anyone be able to converse in that atmosphere - the hostess sat us in a back room of the restaurant which we thought would be much quieter - not so. Although not full, the din was again far beyond a normal conversation- the room has no sound deadening features at all. It was a nice night, and they have a great patio with heaters. We were reseated there - much better. The patio atmosphere far surpassed either of the interior rooms and the heater was effective. We ordered the duck liver mousse and the olives as a starter, along with two cocktails. After reminding the waitress twice, we finally got the first drinks- about 15 minutes after we ordered them. They were fine. The mousse and olives were really tasty. The croustades that came with them were very light and crispy - perfect. We ordered entrees and a bottle of wine. The entrees did not hit the level of the apps. The misty knoll chicken breast was supposed to have Mediterranean spices - which all ended up on the skin leaving the actual chicken pretty tasteless. The short ribs did not look like short ribs at all - they looked like a slice of rib eye- somewhat dry - the sauce was good but this dish did not meet expectations either. There is potential here, but work to be done. We gave our feedback to a waiter who, to his credit, genuinely listened- whether it got back to the kitchen we won't know. One irritating bit- the spotlights on our side of the patio are motion-activated from the cars in the drive, so they kept going out and leaving us in darkness until a car drove by. The waiter acknowledged that he had already fed back this issue with the management. I hope they can make some improvements. Come for the apps and the bar and expect to shout. read more

I just attended a function at this restaurant. The food was amazing the bar tender the best and service even better. Michelle was an awesome help with setting this up. Oh, my. My friend and I came in on a Saturday evening prior to wedding activities. Our original plans for accommodations had not worked out, leaving us to search for something rather last minute. We were tired and hungry following a 2+ hour commute from NY. Having both recently completed graduate school, budget was in the back of our minds. Gateways had their vacancy sign up and looked fairly homey and inviting. "Let's stop and check their rates," I suggest. He stopped the car and I ran in. Fabrizio Chiariello was behind the bar and told me they did indeed have several vacancies. The rate was not as good as we had hoped, but could be done. "Thank you," I said. "Let me check with my friend and come back." I consulted with Steve-o, who had a [possibly cheaper] place in mind further south. Back in the automobile, we drove a bit past Lee, seeking it out to no avail. "Let's do the Gateways," I said, "but please let's have dinner first before I pass out." We stopped for a small meal and went back. Fabrizio Chiariello was still behind the bar. "Would it still be possible to rent a room?" I asked. No. Although the rooms were still available and the doors still open, he told me my window had passed. He said it was a matter of principle. When I told him we had needed to find dinner, he told me we should have eaten at his restaurant. Exhausted, we gave up and just went to meet the wedding friends for drinks. We ended up sharing a room with some other friends who had an extra bed. In the end, I am glad we didn't end up paying the higher prices for rooms and meals at such an unfriendly and stuffy place. read more

The quintessential New England Inn with an opulent flare. Our stay was brief, arrived very late one November evening after the inn closed for the night. Inn keeper was not happy, don't blame her, but quickly arrived to check us inn. She ultimately turned out to be a friendly and helpful person. Our stay was comfortable enough. The general environment is amazing and one of its strengths. Decor is beautiful with an opulent flare. We stayed in the small Viola room on the first floor which was convenient but not the best they have to offer. Heat was a small issues in the evening and the bathroom paint is starting to peel. Take note, pamper yourself and get the bigger room upstairs. Breakfast is include and was awesome on Saturday's morning complete with organic yogurt, fresh fruits and hot pastry. read more

My wife and I have stayed at Gateways Inn twice. Once 6 years ago and the second within the past month or so. Both stays were delightful. The hotel is, despite some of the comments listed below, in excellent shape and the proprietors take great care of it. The meals, whether it's a delectable dinner or a warm breakfast, are extremely well made. The rooms are tastefully decorated with antiques, classy furnishings, and sufficient modern devices and accessories for the busy traveler. My one complaint this past time was that the heat in our room was completely messed up. We actually had if anything lowered the heat and the room when we came back later in the evening was a boiler. Furthermore, the heater grills both in the room and outside the room were clanking madly throughout the evening, which made it hard to sleep. We turned off the heat, opened the windows, and not much seemed to make a difference. I normally would deduct "stars" or points for this but to be fair they were having heat problems and work was being done when we arrived. The true pleasure of this establishment (for me) is that the proprietor has collected one the largest and centrally most impressive liquor collections - specifically Single Malt Scotch - in the US. The inn has over 200 bottles of some of the finest and rarest Scotches around, and the proprietor is more than happy to show it off. Still, he has a right to be proud and he has invested significant money and time collecting the many bottles that are prominently displayed in the bar. I should point out that they also host Scotch pairing dinners - I have yet to take part but they look marvelously intriguing. Anyway, whether you're looking for dinner, a place to stay, or a drink - I highly recommend the Gateways Inn. read more

My fiancee & I spent a night here and it was wonderful. The proprietors are wonderful and friendly. The ambiance was great and the room was nice. I loved the gas fireplace and it helped make the room warm really quickly. We had both dinner and breakfast and the food was awesome. The steak I had for dinner easily ranks in my top 3 steaks of all time. It is a bit pricey, but when you want to spent a night away somewhere, it is a great place to do so. read more

This is an iconic Bed and Breakfast set in one of the most beautiful villages in all of New England. 5 minutes to Tangelwood and Norman Rockwell Museum. Michele and Eiram are attentive hosts and will bend over backwards to make your stay more pleasurable ! I called the inn with a question about the dining room. I had made my reservation 2 weeks in advance and the woman I spoke to told me our party of 4 would be seated in the small dining room off the main one. She recommended it as it has 4 tables and we would see the piano and be able to hear the jazz without it being as noisy as the larger main room. I told her it was perfect. We arrived and were led to the lower dining room instead. When I questioned the hostess I was told that the tables of 3 and 4 were moved to the lower dining room to make room for a larger party (one table of 4 remained empty the entire time!). We were in the LDR which as no ambiance, harsh lighting and was quite noisy from the other diners (not acoustically planned out). We heard no live music. While the food was good and our waiter was stellar, the evening was ruined for me and was very disappointed that I couldn't give my guests the evening I promised them I don't know why the larger party wasn't moved to the lower dining room instead. My wife and I just wanted to get away for the evening. We stayed 1/30/2018-1/31/2018. We were the only guests at the Inn this night which I thought was neat and my wife thought was a little creepy. Michele was fantastic and gave us a small tour. Our room was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was great! Organic and homemade items. We tried a few cheeses that we had never had before. This inn was recently sold. The place has gone to seed. Carpets and upholstery need replacement. Chipped furniture is unattractive. Housekeeping is very light. Ajax Tornado is urgently needed in the bathrooms. No one is at the desk after 5pm. To be paying over $300 for a room in this inn is outrageous. I had a wonderful experience staying at the Gateways Inn. The guestroom was beautiful and the bed was very comfortable. From the moment I arrived, Fabrizio and Rosemary were exceptional hosts. Their knowledge of Lenox and the whole Berkshire Region was incredible. They did a wonderful job making sure I visited all the worthwhile places to see in the area. The meals at the Gateways Restaurant were delicious! Rosemary's homemade cheesecake was by far the best cheesecake I've ever had! This place was a great find. Great food, amazing service, beautiful property, comfortable atmosphere, the live music was awesome (jazz on this particular night) and perfect ambience. New ownership this year. They now have a late-night dining option, with entertainment, in the Piano Bar. Lenox generally shuts down early, and has always lacked a good place to go après-Tanglewood or theater, and now we have it. It's lounge seating, soft chairs and sofas, and tiny tables. The food offerings are themed packages like the New York - corn beef and pastrami, the Athens - various Greek things, sized for sharing, plus various sandwiches. Soup in a bread bowl was unusually constructed, not the usual approach with too much bread vs. soup. We've been there twice now, with four people , and had 8 great experiences. Lots of options for vegetarians. The menu is on their Web site. Entertainment is a singer or small jazz combo, and tends toward old-time supper club vibe. Very pleasant. The old owner left behind his insane collection of 100 different scotches, and it's fun to peruse the menu and then choose one at random. I've had a Glen-something and a Mac-something, both delicious. Note: we didn't try the main dining room or stay overnight, so my rating doesn't apply to those features. Older ratings should be viewed with care, as the ownership and management are all new this year. read more
