This luxurious hotel is the perfect base for attending Tanglewood music festival events in the summer. The hotel and grounds are elegant and well maintained. From my experience the staff were very accommodating and even provided umbrellas during a rain storm (without asking) walking to the main entrance after parking. I can't speak for the food as I didn't have any meals there but am looking forward to another visit. read more

The breakfast here is fantastic. Beautiful omelet, pastries, sausage was delicious, bacon, butter, sour dough bread, among others. The dinner, however, was not of the same standard. The house made gnocchi greasy, fish disappointing. Based on our breakfast we were expecting greatness, instead we received disappointment. The room and surroundings are beautiful and the service professional and helpful. They have a decent wine list. So, balancing the two: breakfast and dinner I would rate this place three stars. Amazing service and food quality.. on the pricey side, but everything in is made from scratch

My family and I had New Year's Eve dinner at Wheatleigh last week. We were very excited and anticipated a wonderful, elegant evening. Unfortunately, we had anything but. The ambiance of the place creates the possibility of a magnificent, festive evening, but they did nothing to add to that. No fires were blazing; the overflow dining space where we were seated had plain white table cloths, no centerpieces and nothing festive or joyful. To boot, both the lobby and the dining room were freezing cold and we had to request the heat be turned up many times. The service was abysmal--from taking over 1/2 hour to get pre-dinner drinks--which came as we were being seated--to the interminable wait times between courses. The 4 course, overpriced prix fixe dinner took about 3 1/2 hours--not because we were savoring the meal, but because the wait times were endless. To add injury to insult, not only was the food not very good (at best), 3 of the 5 of us got sick afterwards--some of us are still suffering the after effects. To add insult to injury, I wrote a lengthy complaint to the restaurant manager, Mark Staudinger, who couldn't be bothered to respond. Do NOT waste your time and money here. Eating home would have been lovelier and more festive. read more

The food was disgusting for the price and to make it even worse, the waiter had no idea where ingredients are from. When we asked where the source their seafood from, the waiter responded "the guy drives his truck from Boston to bring the food, the chef has been working with him for years" ... still don't really know where the ingredients or food was sourced from. You'd think at a high end restaurant they'd pride themselves on "wild caught" or "locally foraged" ... the experience was so dismal, it inspired me to forewarn others. You are better off eating anywhere else.... Even a drive through perhaps. We made the dinner reservation over the phone and was given a specific time for when they will have a table available. I asked if we could come in 30 minutes earlier, she responded that they were fully booked. When we came in, the restaurant was practically empty. As soon as we walked into the lobby, we were stopped by a lady (still not sure who she was) and she aggressively asked if we had reservations. What an unwelcoming way to greet people. Wheatleigh is wonderful and worth a trip. On a recent weekend in Stockbridge, 6 of us went there for lunch. The room we dined in was pure glamour and good taste. The view is one of the best views I can imagine from a restaurant. I was a little hesitant to suggest we dine there after looking at what it would cost to stay there. It's more expensive than a fine Manhattan hotel. But I had been here years ago and found it so beautiful I wanted to share the experience. And we were all glad we went. The items on the menu were not extravagantly expensive (not inexpensive either) and they were all good. We shared yummy fried goat cheese balls for an appetizer. The quiche, the beet salad, the burger, and the croque monsieur were all good, as were their fries. I was a bit nervous about things that we ordered that were not on the menu. The water told us about a few special items, someone asked if they had any draft beer (not on menu) and several people ordered it. I ordered a glass of wine and the pour was about 3 ounces - not enough - even though the wine was expensive for a glass. Since someone in our party picked up the bill I never got to see the prices on the specials. We were the only people in the restaurant for the whole time we were there. The Wheatleigh transported me to Rodeo Drive! Unfortunately I was Julia Roberts being refused service by an ungracious snobby Asian hostess. If you do go please try your luck with anyone but her. She thought her empty restaurant was Studio 54! There was one other couple dining, but she was convinced they were fully booked and could not accommodate my friend and me for lunch, a drink, anything. And the attitude was next level. The service was jarring and not what one would expect for a hotel with such elevated accolades. We were greeted by two overly eager front door staff who then walked us out to the back for drinks on the lawn. We were given a menu then forgotten about entirely. After some time and after being bitten by many bugs in the grass, we moved to the terrace hoping staff would remember we were out there. That did not happen. So finally we moved back inside to the lobby and even then several staff walked by us without so much as a word. We had arrived 45-60 min early for a drink before our dinner reservation and yet we did not get our drinks until about 10 minutes prior to our scheduled seating time-- which meant we waited at a minimum, over half an hour for service. Mind you it was not busy in the least. We saw two other parties (a party of four, a party of two) in that time. The staff member who brought our drinks was also poorly trained. A bit of wine was poured into my companions glass and told us she would fetch more and be right back. Alas, that was not to be. Perhaps we were served by a ghost. As for dinner, we had requested the tasting menu and were told it was not possible. That is fine but when making the reservation I assumed we would be in the Portico and it was not made clear. Once seated in the "Bistro" the waitstaff was curt, unfriendly, and unhelpful. I would have been annoyed by the service if we had paid $100 total, let alone the $400 we did between the two of us. Moreover, the appetizers were two dimensional in both flavor and texture and we genuinely wondered if they had been microwaved. To their credit the grilled Buffalo ribeye was perfectly cooked. We also tried the truffled pasta (admittedly hard to mess that one up though). Also it was baffling to see bottles of wine by the glass with cheap rubber stoppers sitting sadly atop a credenza in the dining room. It felt as if we were in a tavern. Is it that difficult to find staff in the Berkshires that are even slightly trained or educated in hospitality and culinary arts? A highly disappointing and bizarre evening on the whole. What a pretentious bunch of buffoons at the management of this place. My partner and I decided to take a last minute get away to the Berkshires and seeing that the Wheatleigh was near the inn we were staying at, decided to chance it for dinner. We were told that no seating was available (which was fine-we knew we were taking a shot) but then, when we asked if we could look out on their patio to simply see if it was attractive and warranted a future visit, were told that this was impossible as we were not registered guests, that we would have to leave immediately and were escorted to the door. To give context, we were appropriately dressed and were very polite. I have had the pleasure and opportunity to visit some of the finest hotels in the world. What makes those hotels great is their fine sense of hospitality. After all, you never know who it is you are dealing with and so uniformly gracious hospitality is simply smart. The management of the Wheatleigh clearly do not understand that. I see another reviewer with a similar story so very clearly this is an ill conceived management practice at this hotel. Bottom line-if you want a genuinely first class hotel that understands hospitality, then don't go to this place. read more

Awful. Just awful. The food is overhyped and overpriced. The courses were spaced out in a bizarre fashion. I ordered my venison medium rare (as the chef recommends and the way I prefer my meat) it came well done. Server was nowhere to be found for the entire time my plate sat in front of me- desperately hungry (the first 2 courses were bite size) I ate it .... Told the server about the venison being over cooked - he offered me a drink (I do not drink alcohol and did NOT order drinks throughout the entirety of the dinner... wanted to laugh when he offered me a drink at the end of my meal after I declined wines and bar drinks in the beginning of the meal) not sure how they are considered a 5 star restaurant. Most of the time we sat with our empty plates waiting for them to be taken away because every dish was bite size- and not that good, bad actually. Left hungry ... but more so annoyed that we wasted so much time there. SAVE YOUR TIME and money. Oh and PS- they took off the 20$ "supplemental charge" for my venison after they tacked it on the bill... so they actually charged me for dish. Mindblown Another favorite moment was when the server refilled our waters and the condensation from the pitcher dripped into the food... for a 185$ tasting menu- at least have a linen cloth or something to prevent that from happening. Almost forgot to mention how we got ambushed as soon as we walked into the hotel... petite Asian lady cornered us as if we walked into the hotel wanting to rob it... I should have trusted my gut and turned around right then. What a pretentious place. I've traveled to more than 40 countries and eaten at the finest restaurants in the world and never felt the way I did here- their snobby attitude might have made sense if the service or food was mediocre at best... The entire dinner was spent laughing because we didn't know what else to do. I kept thinking i'm on some episode of prankd' or impractical jokers and the cameras are about to roll out. The snapper was snappy, the crab was succulent, the hot foie gras just what duck liver should be when served hot, the rabbit saddle surprisingly moist and tender, the turbot meaty and delicious, the lamb did everything you'd hope it could to make the wine better while the wine did the same for the lamb in turn, the cheese trolley was nearly overwhelming, and the chestnut and hazelnut dessert is what everyone hopes for - a dessert that is ANYTHING but anticlimactic. Service was impeccable, on top of that, and the wines we chose, a Pol Roger Winston Churchill and a bottle of Opus One, did justice to a fabulous meal, as the meal did justice to them. We were the ONLY diners in the restaurant, as the hotel has only three other guests beside ourselves, so this review must be taken in that light - we felt like royalty as we got 100% of everyone's attention. V O C A B U L A R Y S E C T I O N Kinmedai is "Golden Eye Snapper" which is the fish, Beryx splendens; I'm uncertain which species we were served but it was snapper and it was excellent. Pointy Snout is a brand name, out of Connecticut, for fine caviar from Sturgeon species. Crosnes are the starchy tubers of an Asian plant, Stachys affinis. Matsutake is an Asian mushroom, also called "Pine Mushrooms." Périgord Truffles are a species of fungus whose underground fruiting bodies are a gourmet delight! Black Trumpets are a very flavorful wild mushroom. Namelaka is the Japanese word for "creamy," and refers to a method for making creamy textured chocolate. read more

First off I would like to say that most of these negative reviews are greatly over exaggerated and don't seem to be from many people who actually stayed on the property. My husband and I stayed on property for two night so were able to get a fair gauge of the overall hotel. The home itself is grand but had a very cozy feel due to the ceilings and room sizes. The biggest disappoint about this property I have to say is the fact that money has not been spent to restore the fire places to working condition. In a home like this it is a main focal point and a huge contributor to ambiance esp in the colder seasons. Upon entrance to walk into a foyer with a beautiful fireplace which sits lifeless was very dissapointing. Some soft music in the background would be nice as well. It was very quiet and felt odd downstairs when trying to relax with a drink in dead silence. Our room was comfortable. The mattress was very firm but I wouldn't say in a good way as well as the pillows were stiff and there was not a cozy comforter. The bedding game could use a cushy upgrade. Who doesn't want to sleep on a cloud esp when paying for five star? My husband was also disappointed to see there wasn't some small bar to cozy up to. Space is limited so I can see how it may simply not work in the floor plan. The staff is warm and we were never told no our entire stay. We also very much enjoyed all of our food there. We stayed in the junior suit with the balcony (2E) with views of the mountain. I felt it was one of the better rooms with a view. I joked with my husband that I'd rented the entire dining room for his birthday at the end of January, and for a full hour, it was just us. The service was friendly and attentive, and we were well-taken-care-of. My heart started to sink at the first amuse buche though, a tuna sashimi that crunched on the inside with ice from still being defrosted - I get it, you can't buy all fresh produce when you're probably only cooking for 8 tables of 2 on a Saturday night in winter, but seriously - can you just make a gourgere instead? This moment definitely curbed my enthusiasm and made me start to question the quality of the food we were about to have (and pay $100+ for). The starters were good enough - soft gnocchi, parmesan froth, chilled lobster. We saw other people getting the foie gras, which seemed it may have been a better choice. My fish was good, husband's meat was good (can't remember specifically what he had). I ordered the wrong dessert for me (chocolate and passion fruit?), but LOVED the cheese - we had a great plate and enjoyed it greatly. My parents live in Pittsfield and my father took a cooking course there once and told me the chef doesn't use dairy/butter - I found this hard to believe (and don't want to pass on rumors, but ...), but ... is that the missing ingredient? Also, if they're not turning over enough tables in the winter, maybe tone down the menu so everything can be fresh? I told my parents if they were going to spend $100 on dinner, they should train it down to brooklyn and I'd help them spend their money - but, maybe if you live in the Berkshires you have a different perspective because it's all you have? I had a $50 gift certificate (which of course did not fully cover our meal) from a silent auction and decided to do the Sunday brunch with my mom and fiancee. I'm a vegetarian and am not a fan of eggs, so asked if the chef could make me something special... I always like to see what chefs can come up with on the fly when there aren't many vegetarian options available. The chef offered a few options and I went with the gnocchi with grilled spring veggies. The gnocchi were lightly grilled and melted in my mouth. The grilled veggies were perfect (asparagus, artichoke, parsnips, carrots, and jerusalem artichoke) and coated in some sort of light delicious butter/olive oil sauce. I was very pleased. I also had a fantastic cappuccino. My mom raved about the freshly squeezed orange juice-- I tried it too. It was wonderful. My mom went with an onion soup and my fiancee a grilled salmon dish. The soup was great-- really flavorful and completely smooth. My mom wanted to do the soup as a meal and they were willing to give us a larger size bowl to accommodate her. We were all very pleased with the meal. My fiancee is an architect and often complains about the stuffy architecture and furniture in places in the Berkshires. However, he was pleased with the juxtaposition of the old architecture and the modern European furniture where we were seated. After the meal, a lovely woman gave us a tour of the gardens and told us the history of the building. Overall we received excellent service and were very pleased with the experience. read more

I suspect the hotel and grounds are beautiful and serene on a sunny day (it was rainy and gloomy), but it didn't have the opulence and austerity I expected given room rates starting at $800/night. The decor was a little "stiff" rather then being lush. However, it did have a certain quaintness and simplicity to it. ATMOSPHERE - We had brunch in the sun room and to me, it lacked warmth and elegance. I wonder if a tablecloth would have been better than the pleather tabletop in addition to a vase instead of this green ball of shrubbery that looked like a tribble (Star Trek fans will understand). SERVICE - The service was impeccable, perfectly attentive without being intrusive or overbearing. It started with the greeting at my car door with an oversized umbrella to escorting me to the table. I think this is the first time I've seen someone lay out a table with white gloves. Gazpacho with smoked salmon atop brioche and hummus - The gazpacho was a nondescript tomato soup that really needed additional flavours...jalapeno oil, something. The brioche toast was perfect for the smoked salmon but the hummus was horribly bland. Lemon pancakes with peach confit - The pancakes were small (descriptive not critical), light and fluffy. There wasn't any lemon flavour and it was filled with fresh blueberries so I wonder if this was actually a misstatement on the menu. Nonetheless, it was well made but not terribly interesting. Wild Burgundy Snails (artichokes and wild garlic butter) - The snails were perfectly cooked, the artichoke was finely diced, and the butter mild. Once again, a good dish but a little bland. Salmon and Truffle Scramble - The truffle was perfect....enough so that there was a mild, delicate aroma of truffle without being overwhelming. However, I wasn't a fan of the texture of the eggs. I like my scrambled eggs a little fluffier. Ice cream (Chocolate, pistachio with coconut, honey with lavender, and strawberry marscapone) - This came with 2 small palmiers. I, actually, loved the ice cream. I think it was milk-based so it lacked the heaviness of a cream-based ice cream. It was perfectly smooth in texture. The only misstep was that they served it in a warm bowl that was fresh out of the dishwasher hence melting the ice cream rapidly. They really should have chilled the bowl first. I think the food was mediocre at best. I was expecting a little more creativity and refinement given the location and price. If brunch is a reflection of his other meals, then I'm not sure I will be back for dinner. read more

What a beautiful property - the restaurant dining room (not the library room where they also serve dinner) is in what appears to have been an outdoor portico which now is enclosed in beautifully high glass doors and windows which showcase the "mountains" (I say that because I'm from the West Coast where we have "real mountains" -- just kidding) beyond and the colorful grounds. We are staying here for 3 nights (here to see Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble at Tanglewood) and our suite is just lovely - well appointed, spacious and very quiet. The wine list is very nice - we chose a 1989 La Mission Haut Brion which was just divine. It was well-balanced and not too tannic -- didn't need decanting. Complex berries, leather, animal and tobacco notes. The color around the rim was a lovely rufous or russet red/brown. Each of the plates, be it appetizer or entree were so beautifully composed and presented - we even took pictures, which isn't something I do very often. The chef's amuse bouche was small circle of cold poached chicken a black truffle vinaigrette and micro-celery greens - I don't like truffles, but I ate all of my amuse because the celery flavor balanced out the truffle nicely; the chicken was perfectly moist. I started with the Heirloom tomatoes which came in 3 different presentations: (1) a tomato water gazpacho with tiny melon balls and a brunoise of heirloom tomatoes - outstandingly flavorful and fresh at the same time; (2) sliced "meat" of heirloom tomatoes with dark microgreens, Manchego cheese slices and a citrus vinaigrette - again, beautifully balanced and fresh; and (3) a fried (green, I think) heirloom tomato with golden oregano and a chickpea puree - I wasn't a huge fan of this preparation, mostly because I don't like breaded tomatoes or chickpeas! My husband started with the Japanese Kanpachi (which we learned is the same yellow-tail tuna which we know on the West Coast to be Kampachi (if it's from Hawaii (Kona)). It was also served 3 ways: (1) a tartare with hearts of palm and microgreens; (2) a little spring roll; and (3) curls of raw fish with vegetable "salsa". The dish also had edamame and citrus. Overall, my husband found each of these preparations to be fresh, light and fantastic, with his favorite being the curls of raw Kanpachi with the citrus and vegetables. Next, I had the Australian King Prawn (and I mean one prawn) - it was huge! It came with head on (for those who love to suck the brains out - not my style). On the side were shrimp mousse stuffed squash blossoms and an olive, eggplant caponata. The prawn was nicely cooked; however, it had not been deveined - the shell between the head and tail had been removed so there is no excuse for not removing the little digestive tract, particularly at a restaurant of this caliber. My husband's next course consisted of a tourchon of foie gras served with toast points, a wedge of dried apricot, baby fennel, brandy and a cocoa nib encrusted foie gras mousse ball. The tourchon had a hint of smokiness and silky in texture. The mousse "meatball" was "just okay" according to my husband. My entree was Alaskan cod with langoustine, artichoke and potato. The cod was perfectly cooked and the langoustine was tender (if not a bit too tender). The (tiny!) artichoke pieces were delicious, as was the potato "napoleon" (with layers of potato and potato mousse). A langoustine foam bubbled over the entire dish. Truthfully, I found the foam to render the dish just a little too rich and I couldn't finish my plate (even though the portion size was just right) - the foam made the plate visually appealing though. My husband had the Four Story Hill Farm Poussin for his entree - chicken prepared 3 ways: (1) small portion of a crispy chicken thigh, (2) succulent unstuffed roll of chicken breast, and (3) a mini chicken and morel mushroom "cannelloni". Also on the plate were a parsnip puree, haricot verts, and kohlrabi. My husband's favorite was the chicken breast. We skipped sweets and had 4 or 5 small tastings of various cheeses with warm bread, golden and brown raisins and dried cranberries. Exceedingly refined in flavor, execution and presentation. Conscientious in portion size. Attentive yet unobtrusive service. Outstanding ambiance. Intriguing wine list. Only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because I felt the prawn should have been deveined, my cod dish was overall a bit too rich, and the foie gras "meatball" wasn't a real success in my husband's opinion. Listen to the other yelpers -- make a reservation. The staff is mostly international -- during dinner Melanie (from Reims, France) asked my husband and I if we had been to Montana ... we all recognized each other -- she used to work at Triple Creek Ranch in Darby, Montana where my husband and I have vacationed 3 times in recent years! Just wonderful!!!! We went there with not too high expectations. We walked out, satisfied and full. This is a place that you must try once. The scenery is stunning, the portico is so romantic. We had drinks out on the terrace. It was so peaceful and beautiful there. We wanted to stay outside, but then we had our amazing meal to deal with. The service is great, however, since we went during the early evening it was not as conspicuous as I would want. The portion sizes are small but the presentation, taste and textures of the food make sure that you are full. It was like, I was not physically full, but was full because the experience of tasting the food filled me up and I could not ask for anything more. If you are used to getting a lot of food, then you might be disappointed. But if you go with an open mind, the flavor of the food makes sure that what you get is all that you need :) My favorite dish of all was the heirloom tomato something. It was three different things and the little shot of tomato something at the end was so refreshing and delicious. One complaint is that the bread was not as great as I would expect from an place like this and also the butter. It was normal, like stuff you would get any place else. I had the chocolate dessert and my husband had the corn souffle. Both were right on. Not too sweet and just enough to make you walk away a happy camper. I wish that we would have reserved a hotel room for the night as it would have been just perfect eating at Wheatleigh and then catching a performance at Tanglewood (just down the street). I recommend this place. If you go, make sure to reserve a room for the night so that you don't have to drive back. read more

The facilities are indeed beautiful but BEWARE! If you're eating at the Wheatleigh expect poor quality food disguised by fancy presentation. This is crap food pretending to be five star cuisine and it's extremely expensive. Wine and cocktails are marked up higher than anywhere I've seen. The plentiful waitstaff gives the impression of good service yet they are mostly unnecessary and merely take turns delivering the food. The service isn't bad though it's not good either as they are generally clueless. I fault management for their focus on delivering an illusion and not a good dining experience. read more

Stayed at Wheatleigh in Lenox (short stay), and ate lunch at their fabulous Library. The hotel is gorgeous, even the small rooms are first rate. The house and grounds are better than anything I've ever seen in the Berkshires (including Blantyre - and I LOVE Blantyre). Andrea Verardo and Mark Brown from Wheatleigh were very helpful and made the stay worthwhile. They truly went out of their way to make our experience first class in every way Our lunch meal truly topped off the whole stay. I had the croque monsieur which was delectable. My wife had the scallop special with a mesclun salad. I wish I'd had room for some of the tasty sounding desserts. Our server at lunch was very friendly, and once we found we had some hobbies in common, he couldn't do enough for us. I will definitely plan on returning and look forward to it! read more

Don't miss this! A truly fine dining experience. New silverware with each course... it seems each table has its own server who is extremely attentive to your every need without being intrusive. Your car is warmed and waiting for you as you leave the restaurant. I was taken there on a birthday date quite a few years ago but Yelp wasn't around back then for me to rave about it. Wheatleigh, our home away from home. Every year my husband and I celebrate our wedding anniversary here, and the trip is always too short. The property is breathtaking, from the vintage Tiffany windows to the original carved fireplaces throughout. Everything here is first class all the way: La Prairie products in the bathrooms, 5 course tasting menus, the most attentive staff, perfectly manicured gardens.. sigh! read more

You'll get arressted for tresspassing. This is where culinary art masterminds have there corn souffles served by Austrians with phd's in customer service. Friday evening, four of us made reservations at Wheatleigh S/T casual dining area. We arrived a few minutes early and wanted to have a cocktail where they serve drinks in the lobby. When we headed towards the couch, the Maître d advised us that our table was ready and we could not have drinks in the lobby as it was getting late. We were so stunned by this that we didn't know what to say or do, so we complied and walked to our table. We did notice the dining room was about half empty, and while we were there, it never was at full capacity. As they handed us the menu's, the Maître D asked if there were any food allergies. We advised them one member of our party had a severe dairy intolerance. He responded that he would immediately advise the kitchen. When the bread basket was brought out, they presented the person with the dairy intolerance a different roll, saying those in the basket contained milk - very impressive. What was NOT impressive is that on the menu, they write a second basket of bread will cost an additional $4.00. We ordered our dinners, (no appetizers) and two members of our party had the seafood specialty-one made with dairy, and of course, we asked for the other to be made without dairy - which they agreed could be done. The four portion sizes were so small, we were shocked. Dessert menu arrived and because of the dairy intolerance, we were going to order sorbet. Asking what the ingredients were, we were told 2 of the 3 sorbets were made with dairy products. We couldn't believe it. Had we not pressed them for what the ingredients were, it would have been ordered. And who heard of sorbet being made with anything other than sugar, ice, and flavors. The person with the intolerance ordered orange sorbet. It was presented with four cookies. When we asked if the cookies contained dairy, we were told, "no, only butter." Where do they think butter comes from? Of course, when the bill arrived, considering no appetizers, drinks, wine, side dishes, and small portions, the cost, without tip, was about $50 per person. But the coup de grace was several hours later, the person with dairy intolerance had a reaction to the food. So either the seafood specialty was made and served with dairy, or the orange sorbet had dairy- as had the other sorbets. So if you have any food allergies, dairy intolerance, want to enjoy a cocktail before dinner, are NOT willing to pay $4.00 for an extra basket of bread, and are NOT looking to pay high prices for small portions, think twice before coming here. read more

I've eaten at their restaurant 3 times. Twice for dinner in "the library" and once for brunch out in the windowed sunroom. The food is always delicious, probably the most up scale meals I've had in the Berkshires. The waitstaff is all international, i think it's a requirement to work there. My mother dreams of having my wedding here one day. The grounds are beautiful, it's truly an "escape." read more

My wife and I have vacationed at Wheatleigh twice - once in the summer of 2015 when we travelled from Los Angeles to see James Taylor perform at Tanglewood and again at Christmas in 2017, to experience the beauty of a New England white Christmas. We came home both times refreshed and rejuvenated. Wheatleigh is a small, five star, luxury, hideaway resort in the Berkshires (western Massachusetts) where the entire staff will pamper you from the moment you enter the property until you leave. This is a perfect place to spend a romantic time with your significant other. You will need to open your pocket book, however, as the cost of a stay is not inexpensive - especially if you want to enjoy all the extras that Wheatleigh has to offer (like in room couple massages and dining), but I recommend it highly. read more

having dinner at the Wheatleigh is an event. it's an incredible experience. the service is wonderful. the international staff is very friendly and kind. our server Seoul was very special. great place for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, holidays! only down side is a few of the courses in the 7 course meal were not super spectacular. i still give it 5 stars. this place is a trove.....however, be prepared for some sticker shock because it's very expensive. read more

The physical space is impressive, but not imposing. The grounds are well kept, having an old-world European sophistication. The building is magnificent; it's as if it was transplanted here directly from France or Italy, except without all the mold. The interior is decorated in a muted contemporary style which lends itself to a relaxed atmosphere. Opulence minus the ostentation. The guest rooms are well appointed and extremely comfortable, especially the beds, lacking only working fireplaces. Then there is the food...ah yes, like mana from heaven. This is truly a foodie's paradise. We have eaten at some of the country's finest restaurants, but we keep coming back here because it's the only place we know of that we can go and have some of the best food of our lives every single time, with no let downs or disappointments of any kind, and all without leaving the hotel! While they do have a knack for plating in a modern style, that's not their focus. They make food that tastes like what it is, featuring the ingredients that went into it. They don't take shortcuts. Flavor is king in every single bite from start to finish. From the amuse bouche to the petit fours served with the check and everything in between. No detail is left to chance. Chef Thompson and the pastry chef Tim are absolutely committed to their craft and it shows. Then there is the service, which is truly extraordinary. From the housekeeping staff to the servers in the restaurant, to the sommelier, to Mark, the hotel manager and everyone in between, we felt a relaxed warmth and kindness extended to us from everyone who works there. The staff are all polite, but not distant - they will stop and interact, have a conversation, connect with us, etc. Our needs were attended to instinctively and also without complaint whenever we asked for something outside the ordinary. We couldn't think of anything else they could have done to make our stay more enjoyable. As foodies, we tend to think of the Wheatleigh as a food destination, but it's more than that; we love it because of the people who make the hotel feel like home. Whenever we stay there (which isn't as often as we'd like because we're not rich), we always leave feeling as though we've been well cared for. read more

Wheatleigh is the jewel of the Berkshires. It's not only about the food, which is amazing and French and beautifully presented, but the location, the architecture, the view overlooking the Berkshire mountains, and the romance of the place is just breathtaking. Went for dinner and felt like we were on vacation - first had a drink while walking the gorgeous grounds, then sat down to a glorious meal. I warn you though, it comes at a price....$400ish for dinner for two....it's less pricey in the library and I've not tried that yet, but for a special occasion, this is THE place! read more

Came for a wedding and so had to stay on site for 2 nights. Room was extravagantly priced at $2,100/night. No special rate for wedding guests here. On arrival, 4 people rushed out to greet us, yet no one knew what time breakfast was served in the morning. Staff was young and uninformed. One offered a tour, one offered to show us our room, no one offered refreshments after our 3 1/2 hour drive. Got to the room and there were 4 small chocolate chip cookies and a bottle of water. No refrig or other beverages in the room. How about a bottle of wine or champagne for that price? To get the safe working required two calls & visits as it wasn't reset from previous guest. Bathroom/toilet area was tiny with a sink that you'd find on a plane. A/C unit not efficient (either too hot or too cold). Coffee delivered in pots that weren't thermal, so it arrived lukewarm and was cold in 10 minutes. No one asked if we'd like a newspaper delivered to our room. For a property with prices out of the stratosphere, they need to pay attention to the small details that make a difference. Management take note. We will not recommend -- there are other places to stay that have it together. read more

I envision that this is what staying at Downtown Abbey (the PBS show) would be like; a grand estate built in the 1800's, only 19 or so guest rooms; a formal dining area; a sitting area for "taking your tea" or coffee or cocktails; lots of open manicured grounds; stone and wood and leather throughout; and quiet, polite service. Although not a perfect stay, it's clearly a five star experience. The restaurant tasting experience is phenomenal, and others have rated it under that Yelp entry. The hotel is quiet, elegant, small, and impeccably clean. This is not the place to wear your wife-beater and shorts; slacks and collar shirts at all times, maybe jeans, are the minimum, and a blazer to dinner. Small issues include that there was no one easily found to assist; there is no "front desk," and the person that is supposed to be on duty in the main room was often nowhere to be found. Room AC didn't cool the room very well, and we felt it was a tad warm while trying to fall asleep. Much of the staff is very young, seemingly doing internships for hospitality school. I saw ONE employee over 30 years old. Still, this is a high class experience with elegant touches and modern comforts. Would absolutely return! read more
